Imagine God active in your life,
leading you to accomplish
more of what matters most.

Welcome

At Galilee, we believe that we are ordinary people called to an extraordinary purpose:
to know Christ and to make Him known. We got our start in 1959, when the residents of
Broad Run Farms dreamed of creating their own church. Worship began in our original
building in 1965.
Sunday morning services are at 9 and 11. We incorporate a variety of music into our
worship and would love for you to join us. We’d especially like to see you at our Grow
Hour of small groups between services, starting at 10:15am.
We’re more than a church. We’re also a preschool, a community center that houses
recovery and support programs, a headquarters for scout groups, and a busy gym full of
individual and team sports competitions and practices.
Welcome to Galilee…we hope you make this your church home.

Center Point

“Hopes and Dreams”
This is it, the height of summer. As someone
who likes nothing better than to run and bike
through nature, it is such a blessing to see our
green environment reach its utmost at the top
of the growing season. All those bare trees we
saw in winter, that put forth such modest buds
in spring…well, they’re all grown up. They really
took it to the next level. What’s best is that they
seem born to serve a purpose: they provide
shade on a hot day, and shelter on a rainy one.
It makes you feel good to be alive. Because God
is good!
I’m thinking about the “Next Level” today because this past weekend, some volunteers
and I met to discuss the Next Level Innovations program at Galilee, which will culminate
in a churchwide “Hopes and Dreams Day” retreat on the second weekend of November
(save the date: Nov 11 and 12).
The volunteers and I are collecting data and crunching numbers to share with a district
team that will be looking at Galilee from the outside to offer five suggestions—five ways
to grow toward that “Next Level” of church greatness.
So, we need your help! To grow successfully, any organism depends on its unique DNA.
The genetic gifts that God gave the pine tree, for instance, allows it to grow straight and
tall and narrow. The oak tree gets massive, but knows when to shed its leaves. The ivy
stays flexible and is highly opportunistic. It will grow wherever and whenever it can.
Galilee has its own nature, too. Its own path toward accomplishing our extraordinary
purpose.
As Galilee grows, it is essential that our plans match our DNA. The discussions that take
us forward need to reflect the real hopes and dreams of you and the other members of
our congregation.
You’ll hear a lot more about Next Level in the weeks to come. We will have a Town Hall
to discuss what it is, and congregants will be most involved in the Next Level planning
and voting if they come to November’s Hopes and Dreams Day.
I hope (and dream) it is something you will want to be involved in. Look for more
information soon. If you have any questions, give me a call.

Our pastors publish a new Center Point
each Tuesday on Galilee’s Facebook page.

Children’s Ministry

September is Super Kids month! All kids want to be Super Kids, and they can be when
they realize that God is always with them. Because God is with them, they can be brave,
strong, courageous, and wise. This month, our children will learn that we can do super
things when we trust that God is always with us and do things His way. Yes, super - the
kind of super that really matters - comes from God, and it’s not about what WE can do but
about what GOD can do.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid...for the Lord your God goes with you.”
- Deuteronomy 31:6

Youth Message Series -“Measure Up”
During GROW Hour & Youth Group

We all feel the need to compare ourselves to others, but when we do, we somehow
never seem to measure up. In this series, we’ll see that we can be free from the trap of
comparison when we look to God to find our worth.
Sept. 17: Trying to measure up only brings us down.
Sept. 24: Take your cue about you from the One who made you.
Oct. 8: What you have matters less than what you do with it.

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please
people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
- Galatians 1:10

Monday Women’s Evening Group

Led by Mary Ellen VanNederynen
6:30pm - Adult Flex
Begins September 11
Join us for dinner and study.
The Lord’s Prayer is the most famous prayer in the world and is
remarkably simple and brief. In only 70 words Jesus covers the
breadth of the Christian message and experience. Most
Christians already know it by heart and can easily recite it. In
fact, that might be part of the problem—it is so well known and
easily recited that most of us never even think about the words
as we rattle them off silently or in a corporate worship setting.

In Pray Like Jesus, pastor and author Don Underwood reexamines the content of the
Lord’s Prayer and discovers within it insightful spiritual guidance for developing a rich
devotional life. At the end of each chapter, he suggest ideas for making the prayer a part
of daily spiritual disciplines.

Tuesday: Disciple Fast Track

Led by Rev. Matt Sergent
7:00pm - Adult Flex
Begins September 19

A new version of the longer Disciple Bible Study. This is 24-week study of Genesis and
Exodus and Luke and Acts. This study helps deepen your understanding of Scripture and
make connections between what you already know and what you are reading. Each
week you will encounter three spiritual disciplines, learn what they are, and how you can
engage those disciplines. The first discipline varies from week to week, then moves into
Sabbath and prayer. In every session, you commit to how you will respond to Scripture
in terms of ministry in the world.

Women’s Wednesday Morning Study

Stephen Ministry

Going through a tough time - emotionally or spiritually? Struggling
with a crisis in life or simply feeling down?
Consider letting a Stephen Minister help. A Stephen Minister is a
member of our congregation who is trained to listen, care, encourage,
pray and walk alongside you during difficult times. It’s confidential,
free and very helpful.

Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative going through a
difficult time?

A Stephen Minister may be able to offer the support he or she needs.
Stephen Ministers are members of our church trained to provide
emotional and spiritual care to people who are hurting.

We’re available by calling the church office at 703.430.2203 or by
e-mailing [email protected]. You may also find any
of us who wear the blue Stephen Ministry badge on Sunday mornings.

Ministry Highlights

7 Ways to Do Something Big
by Leading Small

Volunteering in the nursery is more than two-year-
old smiles and rocking babies. It is joining in on the
vision and goal of ministering to others. At Galilee, this
ministry begins the moment a child is born. Below are
7 reasons why your involvement is needed, useful, and
important.
1. Following God. Nursery volunteers use their spiritual gifts for the good
of others. When you watch over small children, you obey God’s call to
serve.
2. Full attention. A nursery volunteer allows parents to participate in
church without distraction. If you’re a parent, joining the rotation allows
you Sundays to enjoy service, too.
3. Great impressions. Children are forming their first impressions about
church and people. You have the opportunity to make healthy, lasting
impressions.
4. Prayer ministry. You have many opportunities to pray for babies and
families while holding a child, rocking, or overseeing play.
5. Relationship building. Make friends with children, parents, and
volunteers. Foster a sense of belonging and team work. You’ll find that
serving in ministry means receiving much in return.
6. Spiritual influence. Be in on children’s first exploration of Biblical
themes such as God loves them and God made them.
7. Stay or go? The nursery is the first point-of-contact for many families.
How the parents and child are treated can determine if a family stays in
the church.
Ready to take the next step? Talk with either Carol Kearney in the Nursery or Bri
Jones, Director of Children’s Ministry or email [email protected].

Thank you for your commitment and service.

Meet the Pastors

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Why am I a pastor? For me, it’s a personal sense of gratitude. God
has given me life and everything else, too. In return, I am offering
my life in service to God and to people. Religion frequently focuses
on rituals and traditions, rather than working to help serve people
in everyday circumstances. Religions can tend toward externals—
rubbing sacred stones, bathing in sacred waters, striding up sacred
stairs. I say, stop. Just stop. Let me spend my time serving the needs
of the hungry, the hurting; teaching the Bible and befriending the
spiritually homeless.
Enough about me. Come to Galilee, named after the place where
Jesus made his home, and where he said: “I have not come to be
served, but to serve…”
[email protected]

REV. MAT THEW SERGENT - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
I am grateful to be working as a pastor at Galilee and the Chapel
at Lansdowne Woods. I remember in my youth “sitting at the feet
of my elders,” listening to the great stories of the faith. My sense
of God’s call began when I was fifteen years old, but during
college I dismissed the idea of becoming a pastor. I entered law
enforcement, eventually becoming a captain in the Falls Church
City Police Department. My sense of calling diminished for a time,
but it never went away. Over time it began to reveal itself again.
When the opportunity came to be the associate pastor of Galilee
and the pastor of the Older Adult Ministries program, I happily
agreed and answered God’s call to ministry. I did not think it would
be easy leaving law enforcement after twenty years, but I must say
I could not be happier in my decision! God is so good in so many
ways!
I believe my greatest usefulness as a minister is my witness and
love for the Good News of the Gospel. I love to tell the story of
Christ’s love for us all, just as my elders told me the stories when I
was young.
