Unit 2 Outline

Communication is a major part in day to day living, however within the context of the film and TV
industry it is necessary to develop these skills further to ensure you can effectively get your ideas
across to the other crew members, regardless of the department or job role you are in for the
production.

This unit aims to improve your functional communication skills and will be taught in production
contexts through other units. The unit not only relates to wider communication skills as a whole,
which are an essential part of everyday life, but also specifically targets skills that you can expect to
use on a regular basis within the creative media sector such as pitching ideas, writing proposals and
constructing reports. You will therefore develop your ability to communicate your thoughts and
ideas through pitches, proposals and reports to a range of audiences using appropriate modes of
address and forms of technology. You will also develop skills in checking and proof-reading written
materials.

Through this unit you will learn how to select from and summarise information gained from sources
when conducting research for assignments or productions.

Unit 23 Outline

The term ‘multi-camera production’ covers a wide range of specialisms and skills in the moving
image industry. It is applied in situations as diverse as live broadcasts of sports events and concerts,
TV productions such as game and chat shows, and the provision of screen displays for corporate
conferences.

This unit enables you to develop the knowledge and skills fundamental to this sector of the industry
by undertaking the study of professional productions and applying that knowledge in practical multi-
camera productions. The unit introduces advanced technical skills in the use of sound and vision
equipment and the essential working practices and conventions of successfully working in a
production team.

A good grasp of these skills provides the foundation for working in specific technical and production
roles in the industry, from studio producer to sports camera, and on programmes as diverse as soap
operas, comedy game shows, music festival broadcasts, local news magazines or Premier League
football matches.

The technical and team-working skills developed can complement and develop those from other
units in preproduction, video production and production management as well as providing you with
opportunities to gain new specialist skills such as vision mixing and floor management.

The unit mirrors professional practice in providing the opportunity to practise production skills in a
tightly time-constrained environment requiring commitment to working at the highest possible
standards.

Brief Outline

Your production company, BCTV, is looking to expand into various different live production aspects.
This includes chat shows, game shows, soap opera and extensive news broadcasts.

As a whole class you will work and function as 1 production group on the same production,
therefore communication is paramount to ensure everything is completed on time for the executive
producers to give the green light to film and for them to watch the production back.

Your production group must pick one of the following areas to create a 23 minute long production,
this will account for adverts at the beginning middle and end of the production. You must ensure
your programme is in two sections of 11½ minutes on each section to allow the adverts to appear on
screen in the correct time frame in the middle of the production, all correct TV markers must also be
used for this production. You have reasonable creative control for the production.

Areas for Production:
 Chat Show
 Game Show
 Soap Opera
 Extensive News Broadcast

This must be recorded live, therefore appropriate communication and planning must be put into
place. Your production must be created using live editing via the TriCaster system.

This will form a key part of the production company’s portfolio for pitching on further production
ideas which require a multi-camera setup.

What is covered in this assignment?

This assignment covers the all assessment criteria for Unit 2: Communication Skills for Creative
Media Production and Unit 23: Multi-Camera Techniques.

Throughout the assignment you must complete an ongoing production log of each day you are
working on your project, stating:

 What did you complete today?
 How you found the task for today?
 What problems you came across?
 How you overcame those problems?
 What would you do differently?
 What is the task for tomorrow?

Task 1 – (Unit 2) Be able to extract information from written
(Unit 23) sources.
Understand programme formats that use
multi-camera production.

Unit 2
Written sources: eg books, journals, websites, magazines, newspapers, handouts.

Reading: with concentration; skim-reading: scanning; using index; using word search; using phrase
search.

Extract information: eg write notes, summarise, highlight text, annotate document, underline
passages, copy and paste extracts.

Unit 23
Programme formats: live events, eg sports, concerts, stage productions public events; studio
productions, eg game shows, chat shows, news magazines, studio-based drama.

style; maintaining viewer interest; constraints of studio or location environment; multi-camera
simultaneous recording.

Task 1

Working Individually:
A. You will research into the current practice of multi-camera productions through 3 written

sources, which are outlined above. The areas for research are programme formats and reasons

for multi-camera, where you must cover all points under each section. Using your sources you

must select a minimum of 3 different articles to review from each of the sources, i.e. 3 articles

from websites, 3 articles from books, etc.

B. Gathering your research articles together read and extract information from those documents

using the methods outline above and the following link to assist:

http://www2.open.ac.uk/students/skillsforstudy/critical-reading-techniques.php#

C. Select one multi-camera production, watch and analyse the typical flow of the production,

paying specific attention to the programme format and the reason for using a multi-camera

setup.

D. Log of all research which is undertaken. You must reference all sources

evaluation.

Unit 23
Programme formats: live events, eg sports, concerts, stage productions public events; studio
productions, eg game shows, chat shows, news magazines, studio-based drama.

Reasons for multi-camera use: coverage of action; communicating meaning to the viewer; visual
style; maintaining viewer interest; constraints of studio or location environment; multi-camera
simultaneous recording.

Task 2

Working Individually:
A. Using an appropriate presentation platform, you will effectively construct a presentation of your

findings on current practice of multi-camera productions based on your research, including any
relevant examples. This must be completed in conjunction with the information in the
subheading above for unit 2 and 23.
B. Present your findings to your production group and the executives of BCTV. These will be
recorded for your own performance review and for assessment purposes.
C. During the presentation the audience will give written feedback to the presenter about the
layout of the presentation and the delivery of the presentation.

*This will provide evidence for P2, M2, D2 for
Unit 2: Communication Skills for Creative Media Production

*This will provide evidence for P1, M1, D1 for
Unit 23: Multi-Camera Techniques

Task 3 – (Unit 2) Be able to create a report in a media
production context.

Revision: proof-reading (spelling, punctuation, grammar, clarity of expression, structure of content);
electronic checks (spelling, punctuation, grammar, thesaurus).

Task 3

Working Individually:
A. Collect all written feedback for your presentation, assessing where you feel you could improve

from the feedback given.
B. Review the presentation which you have given in task 2, using the information under the

subheading above to assist as well as the feedback which has been given.
C. Re-present your presentation with the ammended changes to your production group and the

executives of BCTV. These will be recorded for your own performance review and for
assessment purposes.
D. During the presentation the audience will give written feedback to the presenter about the
