TOURNAMENT GUIDE

This is a brief introductory guide to judo tournaments for spectators and beginners.

Objective

In a Judo competition, the objective is to score an ippon (1 full point). Once an ippon is scored, the competition ends.

Start of a Contest

Prior to a judo match (shiai) one contestant is assigned a blue or white belt, designating his position on the mat. White
is called first. f the blue contestant is wearing a blue Judogi, both contestants can wear their obi (rank belt). After con-
testants have bowed and stepped forward, the referee announces hajime (begin) to start contest.

Penalties

·Hansoku-make (very serious violation, disqualification)

·Shidos do not give points to the other contestant. (Only technical scores can give points).
