Skill Centre Plus - Brochure 2019-g (1)

A Warm Welcome

PLUS Skills Development Ltd are a provider of vocational training in North
Lincolnshire, England. Our experienced team of staff have a proven track record
of inspiring young people through our innovative, award winning approach to
education.

Our dedicated facilities are known as ‘Skills Centre PLUS’. One Centre houses a
purpose-built, engineering, motor vehicle and construction workshop together with
academic teaching facilities. The second Centre houses a Hair & Beauty salon and
dedicated classroom and social spaces. Our third Centre is situated in the beautiful
and peaceful setting of the 300 Acre Normanby Country Park where the main focus
is enterprise.

All our centres offer a secure environment and have been designed to comply with
the DfE safeguarding guidelines to ensure the students feel safe whilst learning.

The focus of Skills Centre PLUS is to:

• Deliver a flexible and responsive approach to the requirements of Local
Authorities and key stakeholders

• Allow learners to have access to a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum
that they thoroughly enjoy

• Ensure that learners are taught by committed, motivated, qualified and
experienced professionals

• Provide an exceptional learning establishment that fosters and promotes a
quality teaching and learning experience within a caring environment

• Offer a Centre where learners are challenged to have self-expectations and
a strong sense of their own worth that will enable them to maximise their
potential

Key aims

One of our key aims is to add real life
experiences to learning.

People who access the Centres will be
given opportunities to explore how the
subjects they study relate to the world
of work. Through active learning we aim
to open our students eyes to what they
can achieve.

Key Objectives of the Supported
Internship Programme:

The programme is designed to develop
personal employability skills around the
seven strands of the North Lincolnshire
Employability Framework. In essence
this is to equip our Interns with the
knowledge and experience to move
into either full time employment or
progression to further education/
apprenticeship or traineeship.

Supported Internships
and Foundation Work
Programme

The Skills Centre PLUS Programmes are designed to develop life skills with
young people with a learning difficulty and/or disability and prepare them for
sustainable, paid employment by equipping them with the skills and experience
needed for work.

The Learning Environment:

At PLUS we work with vulnerable young people in small groups and after an
initial period of working with them, we design a bespoke programme around
individual needs. This helps individuals settle in quickly and to develop and
flourish.

Each Intern has access to a job coach throughout the programme. The job
coach helps to match the right employers to the Intern and then to guide both
employer and Intern through the work experience element of the programme.
We have found that if we get this right it increases the prospect of full time
employment for the Intern

Interns attend the Skills Centre three days per week
over an academic year and work towards:

• NCFE Employability Qualification
• Confidence Building
• Employment orientation with a Job Coach
• Supported Work Experience
• Development of team skills
• Development of Maths and English at the appropriate level for the learner
• Apply Maths, English and ITC to real life working situations and environments

Our Courses

Schools, Academies and Colleges

We work successfully with many Schools, Academies and Colleges across North
Lincolnshire. The students are aged between 13 and 16 years old and study on a number
programmes, including:

• Engineering
• Motor Vehicle
• Construction
• Hair and Beauty

All our qualifications meet the requirements for DfE league tables, providing the students
with an (A* - C) or (9 - 5) GCSE equivalent qualification on successful completion.

What Academies say about the provision:

“We are delighted with the support, care and quality of provision that the staff from Skills
Centre PLUS have provided for the students at the academy. Our students have achieved
very positive outcomes in terms of progress, skills, engagement and readiness for work.
This has significantly increased their chances of success in the future and opened to
them opportunities that will make a positive impact on the rest of their lives”

- Principal, The St Lawrence Academy

Staff Development and Teacher Training

Our staff development and teacher training programmes are designed to build
confidence and subject knowledge to give you the necessary skills to become an
effective classroom practitioner. As part of our courses there will be placements in local
schools and colleges to help develop your teaching practice.

We offer bespoke training packages through our staff development unit to develop and
enhance teaching skills.

PLUS Enterprise
Centre

The PLUS Enterprise Centre is set within the 300-acre grounds
of Normanby Hall Country Park and offers to students the unique
experience of:

• Confidence building – our teams work with young people to assess their
individual needs and aspirations in the first instance. By getting to know
the young person then quickly pull together a programme to support them
effectively.

• Working with established teams who work with SEMH needs – enhanced
by the calm setting of Normanby and our Life Coaches.

• Employability programme with dedicated Job Coach to help steer career
aspirations and pathways into work experience/jobs. A Job Coach will
provide support within the employment setting.

• We have access to many work experience opportunities at Normanby Park
and across North Lincolnshire.

Education Partnerships

PLUS have established strong partnerships with leading
education establishments throughout the UK. The St
Lawrence Academy and John Leggott College are two
of our key partners. This has enabled us to offer a highly
effective provision with natural progression routes for our
students.

International
Links
Partnerships

Skills Centre PLUS are building on the years of international
partnership experience that the Directors, who developed
partnerships in North America, Europe, Bangladesh, Hong
Kong and China, bring to the company.

As part of the strategic plan for Skills Centre PLUS, we are
looking to further develop international partnerships by
supporting education provision in other countries.

Student Exchange Projects

As part of a global awareness development project, PLUS
have devised initiatives that enable young people to
partner globally and participate in environmental research,
culminating in student exchanges. This enhances and
enriches the educational experiences of the young people,
raising aspirations and opportunities.
