Letter From Our CEO Valued Partners, Last year was filled with many wonderful accomplishments for both the Catalina Island Medical Center and the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation. I want to take a moment to reflect on a few of those victories and share our plans for an exciting and transformative 2023. Our community is already benefiting from our new staff members as well as some internal promotions. Michael Bjornson, Ph.D., who now serves as our Clinical Health Psychologist, is developing CIMC as a Patient-Centered Medical Home. This model of relationship-based care focuses on the patient as a whole person and is intended to foster more coordinated and comprehensive care. In addition, Liza Logan now manages our outpatient clinics and oversees social services and physical therapy, while Neil Macready leads growth as the Foundation’s Chief Development Officer. As CIMC’s Chief of Staff, Dr. Edwin McGroarty continues to ensure top-notch care for Catalina Island patients. Dr. McGroarty plans to have at least 90% of hospital policies and procedures reviewed and updated by the end of his contractual year. He is also working to build a functioning acute admission/observation program. I am also happy to share that we received an infusion of support with a $258,376 grant from the Small Rural Hospital Improvement Program for the fiscal year ending 2022. These funds are being used to secure vital leadingedge medical equipment, including GE heart monitors and the ACE Axcel® Clinical Chemistry System. Carrying the new hospital build forward, we developed hospital construction system concepts and their estimated costs, along with a construction forecasting model for our new state-of-the-industry facilities. We also applied for various grants, employee retention credits, and other sources of funding. Additionally, an Airsafe review and Precision Approach Engineering exhibit concluded that the planned CIMC heliport is safe and compliant with Federal Aviation Administration requirements. It’s so inspiring for me to see this project move forward, step by step. Our annual summer bash, Catalinaville, continued to be a big hit on every level, raising over $800,000 toward our goal of a new hospital in Avalon. I owe a debt of thanks to the CIMCF Board of Directors, committee chairs, volunteers, guests, and donors for your incredible support. I am looking forward to attending another fun celebration this August! Looking forward, the 2023 CIMC Strategic Plan has been drafted and is now in review; it will provide greater detail on all upcoming initiatives. The draft will be presented first to the medical staff and then to the Board of Directors for final approval. Together, these achievements have helped ensure that CIMC can continue providing critical, highquality care for our special community, now and in the future. And none of it would have been possible without your invaluable assistance. Thank you. With Gratitude, Jason Paret CEO, Catalina Island Medical Center 1
CIMC ER Department Claims Prestigious Award The Catalina Island Medical Center ER Department is proud to have been honored as a 2022 Human Experience Guardian of Excellence Award® winner. As the nation’s leading Human Experience (HX) healthcare performance improvement company, Press Ganey works with more than 41,000 healthcare facilities to enhance clinical excellence, workforce engagement and safety, patient experience, and more. This esteemed honor from the global leader in healthcare experience solutions and services means that the CIMC ER scored in the 95th percentile of Press Ganey clients and was selected for recognition amongst other healthcare organizations across the country. Avalon’s only ER department is open and available 24/7 to all who live, work, and vacation on Catalina Island. Ongoing patient satisfaction surveys also consistently rank CIMC’s emergency services as amongst the best in the nation. The CIMC ER Department now evaluates and treats 2,600 cases a year—a 33% increase since its UCI Health collaboration began in 2016. The department is staffed aroundthe-clock on every day of the year with UC Irvine Emergency Medicine Physicians and supported by the CIMC laboratory and diagnostic imaging departments to meet the acute medical needs of everyone on Catalina Island. 2
The physical therapists in the new gym are all incredibly involved, knowledgeable, and passionate about their patients. I was having muscle pain, and they helped me find relief through stretching, exercising, and using the new equipment. Physical therapy on our Island has allowed me to heal and strengthen without taking time off to travel to the mainland. - Anonymous Grateful Patient 3
New State-of-the-Art Physical Therapy Facility Springs into Motion Catalina Island Medical Center has opened a physical therapy and fitness location in the Shops at Atwater (119 Sumner Ave. Suite E). Along with physical and occupational therapy, CIMC will be offering gym memberships at the sparkling new facility later this spring. Therapy sessions are overseen by CIMC’s Therapy Services Department. Their experienced physical therapists integrate skilled treatment techniques with patient and caregiver-centered education to return patients to their highest level of functioning. Therapists evaluate and treat patients to improve their strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, and mobility skills. Occupational therapists assess and treat patients who are recovering from injury, illness, or disability— helping them develop, recover, or maintain daily activities and live life to the fullest. Stay Fit Catalina! PUBLIC GYM MEMBERSHIPS COMING SOON! 4
This new state-of-the-art facility has already provided a much needed upgrade to our Physical and Occupational Therapies space and we look forward to providing our fitness facilities to the public. We’re constantly working to provide new avenues for better health and wellness. - Bryce Noll CIMC Foundation Chair and Assistant Hospital Administrator 5
Every summer, the Foundation’s popular Catalinaville fundraising event brings people together to celebrate our shared accomplishments, raise awareness, and inspire philanthropic support for the island’s new Medical Center . It also never fails to put the FUN in fundraising . On the evening of Saturday, July 16, 2022, more than 250 people stepped and danced into Catalinaville to enjoy live music, silent and live auctions and raffles, conversation and connection, and a truly magical evening at the beautiful Descanso Beach Club . When all was accounted for, Catalinaville generated $811,000 to support the construction and opening of the Medical Center . We Put the FUN in Fundraising The 2023 Catalinaville fundraiser will unfold on Saturday, August 5 .
