Interventional Radiology (IR) is a sub-specialty of radiology that uses minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat diseases using guided ultrasound, CT Scan, Fluoroscopy or MRI modalities. The advantage of Interventional Radiology procedures is that it minimizes physical trauma to the patient (the size of the surgical wound) does not require general anesthesia, reducing the risk of infection , speeding up recovery time and shortening hospital stay.Most of the procedures performed by Interventional Radiology use catheters through skin tissue less than 0.5cm long with local anesthesia, so they are performed in the patient's state of consciousness / light sedation. IR procedures are divided into two, namely diagnostic and therapeutic.Among the procedures the diagnostics performed are biopsies involving various internal organs, angiography and venography while the therapeutic procedures carried out are such as removing the collection (drainage) thrombectomystenting and coiling of abnormal blood vessels.
