What is Human Centric Lighting?

Human Centric Lighting can adjust people’s daily rhythms and improve their motivation, well-being, and
productivity. As humans, light has a great effect in the quality of our sight and stimulate an influence in our moods
and activities. As our physiological response to light’s characteristics (e.g. Colour spectrum, intensity and timing) is
dependant on the artificial light in our surroundings, this is of significance due to most of our time spent indoors.
However Human Centric Lighting solutions can support humans to rhythm, enhance concentration, prevent
sleeping disorders and improve our overall well-being.

Recent innovations and advancements in lighting technology, with the introduction of LEDs and tuneable white
light can be achieved to be energy efficient. With advanced control systems, lighting is easily controlled whilst
Smart and connected lighting systems enable to create endless possibilities with enhanced user control. The
ideas behind human centric lighting are applicable across the board – in offices, factories, warehouses, schools,
hospitals, homes.

Research on the effect of light has been on going for decades by various institutions across the globe. It is the
introduction of LED that provides cost efficient and flexible light sources that makes implementing Human Centric
Lighting solutions easier and efficient. However ongoing research continues to learn of the optimal use of Human
Centric Lighting.

To summarise, Human Centric Lighting is about imitating daylight with artificial lighting in order to achieve some
of the positive effects natural light has on the human body. Below is an example of a typical office day where the
colour is adjusted in accordance to duties and times of the day.

The LIAQA scheme is a bespoke standard written by the United Kingdom Lighting Industry Assosiation focused
around prduct safety and conformity. It is not just a quality scheme, but rather an industry apecific Quality Assurance
solution designed to work in conjunction with ISO9001. LIAQA addresses legislative and regulatory requirements
specific to the lighting industry and ensures that suppliers have a system in place that fully addresses product
compliance

BATHROOM ZONES

ZONE O
Inside bath or shower itself. Electrical products must be low voltage (upto 12V) and rated at least IP67.
ZONE 1
Directly above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m from the floor. That requires minimum IP44
rating, or IP65 (jet proof) if the fitting is subject to direct contact with water.
ZONE 2
Area stretching 0.6m outside the perimeter of the bath and to a height of 2.25m from the floor. It is
also the area around a wash basin, within a 60cm radius of any tap. Fittings in this area must be splash
proof, at least IP44 rated.
ZONE 3
Other areas of the bathroom. IP20 is considered to be safe there, but many developers/contractors
choose IP44 rated lights to be installed in this area.
