Camping Etiquette 101
Camping offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. With a rising number of people choosing
to embrace the camping lifestyle, we also need to think and consider the needs of other campers. Here are a
few of the unwritten camping rules that might help to promote an excellent campground experience, without
damaging the environment or becoming a nuisance to your neighbors.
LEAVE THE SITE AS YOU FOUND IT
One of the most basic unwritten rules of camping is “leave it as you found it”. Littering the environment ruins the
whole purpose behind camping. Refrain from trench digging around tents, clean up any messes and drain waste water
only at approved areas in order to not pollute the environment. Take garbage with you if there is not a proper recepta-
cle for disposal. Try to leave absolutely no trace of your arrival or departure from the campsite.
PLAY BY THE RULES
Most campsites have certain rules that need to be followed to help maintain the balance of natural life in the area. For
instance, removal or cutting of firewood from nearby trees is forbidden in most parks as is the introduction of wood
from outside the natural habitat, as it may contain insects or disease. To find out more about the rules that make
camping safe for you and the environment, do a little research online before setting course to your destination.
KEEP NOISE & LIGHT POLLUTION TO A MINIMUM
It is natural to be excited when finally pulling into the site at the campground, but keep noise to a minimum to avoid
disturbing others. Noises can travel far in quiet, open campgrounds. If you have arrived to the site later in the evening,
refrain from honking horns, banging doors or speaking loudly. Attempt to enter the park quickly and turn off head-
lights or other light emitting sources as soon as possible. If using a flashlight to survey the site before parking, please
refrain from shining the light at tents or other RV windows close to your site. Try to make water connections quietly or
wait until the morning to completely connect the RV to the site.
DO NOT FEED WILD ANIMALS
You may encounter wild animals around the campsite. Remember these animals are nearly always in search of food
and feeding them will simply make them demand more. Some animals may seem tame and harmless while they are
fed, but may become aggressive when eating time is over. Feeding any wild animals makes the campsite unsafe for
you and future campers.
BE FRIENDLY
RV travelers and campers are some of the friendliest people you will meet. Just about all campers are going to be out
to enjoy the great outdoors. Be friendly towards other campers and offer help or advice if needed. Small acts of help
or kindness can make camping a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Just remember, not everyone is
going to want to have lengthy conversations, so make sure to respectful of their space and privacy.
If you plan to go camping, learn as much as you can about the experience by speaking to an outdoor enthusiast. Think
about how your actions can influence the experience of other campers, and try as much as possible to be courteous
towards their needs.
