A three-dimensional (3D) cell culture is an artificially created environment in which biological cells are permitted to grow or interact with their surroundings in all three dimensions. A 3D cell culture allows cells in vitro to grow in all directions, similar to how they would in vivo. Compared with 2D cell culture, in vitro 3D cell models can better recapitulate aspects in vivo organ environment. At present, the production of 3D cell models in vitro remains challenging.

There is a versatile bio-ink consisting of a 4-arm PEG based polymer with
distal maleimide derivatives as the main ink component, and a bis-thiol species as the
activator that can cross-link the polymer to form a hydrogel in less than a second. Rapid
gelation makes the polymer system compatible with 3D bioprinting.
