SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION TO CULTURES
What is culture? According to the dictionary, culture is defined as customary beliefs, social forms and material traits of a racial, religious or social group. In a nutshell, cultures are practises that have been developed and practised over the years by people. These practises were continued, passed down from one generation to the next and eventually became what they are now. There are many different cultures that exists around the world. In Malaysia, the three main ethnic groups are the Malays, the Chinese and the Indians.
Examples of Cultures Traditional Indian dances also known as Shastriya Nritya done in 6 different styles Prosperity Toss or Yee Sang is a cultural dish served during Chinese New Year to symbolize abundance and good fortune
Examples of Cultures Spinning tops or gasing is a traditional Malay game popular among kids but are also played by adults Sinuangga (female) and Gaung (male) are tradional clothes worn by the Kadazan-Dusun during the celebration of Pesta Kaamatan or harvest festival in Sabah

IMPORTANCE OF CULTURE ❖ DEVELOPS SOCIAL SKILLS > Allows socialization between friends and family > Boosts confidence by participating in cultural activities ❖ ATTRACTS TOURISTS & HELPS BOOST THE LOCAL ECONOMY > Countries which are multicultural are natural tourist destinations > Encourage tourists to spend on buying traditional souvenirs or tasting local cuisine
SECTION 3 PARTIES WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE IN PRESERVING CULTURE
PARTIES WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE IN PRESERVING CULTURE Government - Can introduce a new curriculum that includes cultural knowledge - Provide funding to maintain and preserve cultural locations or buildings Public Communities - Can organize cultural events - Exchange and share cultural traditions and beliefs with nearby communities Schools - Organize tours and visits to cultural locations - Create cultural clubs that promote different cultures Parents and Family Members - Teach the younger generation of their cultures - Attend or organize cultural events with family
SECTION 4 PROACTIVE STEPS CAN BE TAKEN TO PRESERVE CULTURES
PROACTIVE STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO PRESERVE CULTURES 1.The government should plan out and host more cultural activities and festivals. 2.Public communities should cooperate with the government in hosting cultural activities and should show support by participating. 3.Schools should educate the students about cultural importance and even teach the students of the cultures that are present (traditional music/writing). 4.Parents should bring their children to cultural activities and festivals while also practising their own culture.
As a summary, cultures give a sense of identity and it is clear that cultures contributes a lot to our lives. Other than social benefits, cultures can also aid in bolstering the economy. Therefore, proper steps must be taken in order to maintain and preserve the longevity of the cultures that exists today. To achieve this, we should all begin to play an active role in conserving our cultural assets to ensure that future generations can enjoy them as well.
