1.0 MATTER
1.4 Physical and Chemical Change
1
What is physical changes ??
Change in the size, shape, or state of matter
NO new matter formed
NO chemical reactions occur
Examples:
1. breaking a pencil
2. phase changes (freezing, boiling, melting,
and shredding) - caused by adding or
removing energy
2
Examples of Physical Changes
• Crumpling a sheet of aluminum foil
• Melting an ice cube
• Casting silver in a mold
• Breaking a bottle
• Boiling water
• Evaporating alcohol
• Shredding paper
• Sublimation of dry ice into carbon dioxide

4
What is chemical changes ??
Change that produces a different kind of
matter
Evidence of a chemical change
1. Bubbles
2. New colour
3. Different smell
4. Heat absorb or release
Examples:
1. Burning
2. cooking
3. Rusting
4. Rotting
5
Examples of Chemical Changes
• Burning wood
• Souring milk
• Mixing acid and base
• Digesting food
• Cooking an egg
• Heating sugar to form caramel
• Baking a cake
• Rusting of iron
6
Indication for Chemical
Changes
• Chemical reactions release or absorb heat
or other energy or may produce a gas,
odor, color or sound.
• If you don't see any of these indications, a
physical change likely occurred.
7
Reaction of sulphuric acid and sugar
