ASSIGNMENT DK014
INDIVIDUAL TASK
TITLE: MOLECULAR GEOMETRY POSTER
Introduction:
There are 5 basic shapes in molecular geometry. BeH2 and BeHCl are compounds having 2
electron groups and linear structure with 180˚ angle. Even though both molecules can have
same electron groups and molecular shape, they can be differing in polarity. BeH2 is non-polar
molecule while BeHCl are polar molecule.
TASK:
Compound A and Compound B have same molecular shape and has no lone pair at the central
atom. A is a polar compound and B is a non-polar compound. Using appropriate examples given,
produce a poster representing Compound A and Compound B. The poster must comply with the
following criteria:
i. According to the basic shape of 5 or 6 electron groups, suggest a suitable molecular formula
of Compound A and Compound B.
ii. Draw the Lewis structures of each compound.
iii. By applying VSEPR theory, predict its molecular shape and show the bond angles in the
molecules.
iv. Describe the differences in polarity and dipole moment of the molecules.
v. State the type of intermolecular forces present in both compounds.
Guideline for student:
1. Refer to scoring rubric guidelines to complete the task given.
2. Consultation with the lecturer should be done at least once before submission date.
3. Your structures must be different with your friends.
