Mission Of The
Shop with a Cop Program

A program developed to help make
the holidays brighter for

less-fortunate families, and to
provide an opportunity for children

to engage in positive police
interaction.

How We Select Participants

Recommendations for participating
students are made by a local advocacy
group, who volunteer at each public
school in Deschutes County

Additional referrals come from the
COPY (Central Oregon Partnerships for
Youth) program and Deschutes County
Drug Court

This is OFTEN a difficult task for those
advocates, as they see the many needs
of the children attending the schools
they volunteer at

For every 2 or 3 students they select to
participate, they know there are many
more at that same school who are also
in need

For that reason, we always try and
ensure that different students
participate year-to-year

While the primary focus is on
low-income students and families, we
also try and identify students who have
overcome obstacles in life, and who are
actively working to rise above those
situations…

2014 Shop with a Cop program

Almost 100 school-aged students
(grades K-12) went shopping

They purchased gifts for 450+ family
members, including getting a little
“something” for themselves

550 people had a little brighter
Christmas!

2014 Shop with a Cop program

Total expenditures for 2014:

$37,000+

ALL of the money donated to
Shop with a Cop comes from private
citizen and business donations…and
all the funds go directly to the
program…no payroll, no administrative
costs, etc.

None of this would be possible without:

– The generosity of numerous local civic
and advocacy groups;

– The generosity of the general public;
– The Board of County Commissioners;
– The participation of local law enforcement

officers;
– The incredible work of our volunteers, and
– Our on-going partnership with Walmart

and Bend/Redmond McDonald’s
franchises

How Does It Work?

Once the students are selected at each
school, they are paired with a law
enforcement officer from a local police
agency

On the ”big day”, the officer picks up
the student at their school, usually an
hour or so before school gets out for
that day…

They join other students who are up to
the same thing, at the same time…

A big part of the whole process is to
give these students some positive
“one-on-one” time with their assigned
officer…

Working from a shopping list
completed by the students themselves,
the students and their shopping partner
go to work…

These students are almost always
VERY reluctant to purchase something
for themselves, wanting instead to
focus on other family members…

…and it’s not always toys and games or
‘fun’ things…

…many gifts include ‘everyday basics’
such as clothing, towels, diapers, warm
blankets…

…even a gallon (or two) of milk!

We always try and ensure that the
students themselves get

SOMETHING…often it’s a warm winter
coat or a better pair of boots that gets

magically snuck into the basket

After going through the shopping list,
we turn the students’ purchases over to
our INCREDIBLE group of volunteers…

While the volunteers get the purchases
wrapped and ready to go home…

…the students are treated to a meal,
courtesy of the “in-house” McDonald’s.

The students are then driven home,
along with their purchases

Here’s a story that an advocate told
about a little girl they connected to the
Shop with a Cop program one year…

She was a gangly, slightly awkward first
grader, afraid of the police.

Earlier in the year, her father was arrested
and put in jail. Through her school

advocate, she was connected to the Shop
with a Cop program, which gives children

an opportunity to see police officers as
caring and helpful people.

This little girl, with her self-cut bangs and
slightly crooked glasses, was excited to go
shopping and could hardly make it through

the school day.

She was all nervous wiggles and smiles
when she met HER officer, and she beamed
as she climbed into the patrol car. She was
treated to a shopping trip that helped her

whole family for the holidays.

Everyone involved in Shop with a Cop
is positively impacted at some level…

The participants themselves and their
families, of course…

Volunteers…

Store employees…

And, of course, the officers, who get a
chance to do something positive!
