I PAGE 06 BURNING LIVES "The era of Global Warming has ended; the era of Global Boiling has arrived", announced United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres as it was confirmed that July 2023 had become the hottest month in the past 120 000 years. On top of the high temperatures, we have seen the effects of global boiling acting out in the news over the recent months. Droughts are becoming more intense and severe, large forest fires are occurring earlier and out of season, and soon, we will experience the first summer without ice in the Arctic Ocean. Moreover, WMO warns of a 66% chance that, in at least one of the next five years, Global Temperature will temporarily exceed the 1.5C threshold above pre-industrial levels, an important limit since it is above that established in the Paris Agreement. Even after all, the UN stated that it is still possible for us to limit the Global Temperature increase to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century, thus avoiding the worst Global Boiling. But this will only be achieved if we work for it immediately and with determination. So it's all in our hands to put a brake on the rising temperatures and mitigate their worst effects. Therefore, the era of Global Boiling is not a phase to which we must adapt but an urgent call to action. Humanity has been the detonation of Climate Change and thus has the means to reverse it. There is still room for optimism if we act immediately and with determination. As Antonio Guterres put it so well, this should not result in desperation but action. It's time to convert the burning heat into burning ambition and speed up climate action. The future of our whole planet depends on it. Despite talking about the data and its menace, we all need to search for room for optimism.
I'm thrilled to share the captivating tale of our family's unforgettable excursion to Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, two ancient cities that stand as living testaments to Sri Lanka's rich history and heritage. Our adventure began as we set foot in Polonnaruwa, a city steeped in archaeological marvels that transport you back in time. The echoes of ancient kings and their grandeur could still be felt amidst the awe-inspiring ruins. From the iconic Gal Vihara statues to the intricately designed Parakrama Samudra reservoir, every step is immersed in a tale of bygone eras. Our journey led us to Anuradhapura, a city that was once the heart of a powerful civilization. As we wandered through the sacred grounds of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya, we felt a deep sense of reverence for the religious heritage that has endured for centuries. The colossal stupas and ancient monasteries whispered secrets of devotion and enlightenment. The well-preserved inscriptions and carvings spoke volumes about the lives and aspirations of the people who once walked these streets. I PAGE 07 The moonstones and guard stones at the entrance of ancient structures told stories of skillful craftsmanship, while the Aukana Buddha statue stood as a silent witness to the artistry of a bygone era. Our days were spent exploring the sprawling ancient complexes, picnicking amidst lush gardens, and mingling with the friendly locals who shared their knowledge and warmth. The serene lakes and sacred sites served as tranquil backdrops to our family's bonding moments, and our laughter echoed through the historic alleys. Our journey was more than a tourist's delight; it was a journey of discovery and reflection. It reminded us of the importance of cherishing our heritage and passing on the stories of our ancestors to the younger generation. The lessons learned from the grand monuments were not just about the past but about how they shape our understanding of the present. As we return from our expedition, the memories of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura remain etched in our hearts. Let’ s TalkWith L E ODr. Chathuri Wickramaaratchi PFLM Well, I joined the prestigious Leo Club of Gampaha Metro in 2019 as the Club Secretary. From there onwards, it has been a roller coaster ride up to date. Going through periods of ups and downs, the experiences down the lane groomed me to become the Leo of the Year in 2023. It's the hardships and difficulties that mold a person into a better version and it was the same with my story. I joined the club as a newbie to Leoism, though I had to bear the weight of a very huge task, "the club secretary," and of course, 2019/20 was the toughest and most memorable Leoistic Year of my Leo Journey. The first experience which shaped me as a leader was having to play the roles of Club Secretary, Bulletin editor, acting the role of Club President as the Meeting chairperson of 1. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY FROM BEING A MEMBER OF THE LEO CLUB TO BECOMING LEO OF THE YEAR AND HOW YOUR EXPERIENCES SHAPED YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS? zone/region/DVP/DP visits, representing in District Council meetings as a New Leo who joined in the same Leoistic Year. Completing those duties, I learned to accept challenges without fear and to trust myself and my peers to succeed in teamwork. In the same year, being a part of the executive committee of the district and multiple district projects as a new Leo gave me so many opportunities to get in touch with Leos of the District as well as the Multiple District. There onwards, climbing up the ladder, I was the Club Vice President as well as the District Treasurer in 2020/21, then the Club President and the District Bulletin Editor in 2021/22 and lastly, the District Vice President and the Multiple Council Director in the year 2022/23. Along this ride, going through various positions and tasks, I've been shaped into who I am today. LLeeoo oof f t thhee YYeeaarr 22002222//2233 LLeeooDDiissttrriicctt 330066BB22 I PAGE 11
Leoism has always been a mentor for my life. "Leadership, Experience, Opportunity," as the words itself say, is the way a Leo is being built. I've had thousands of opportunities through this wonderful organization, which gave me the experience of being a Leader. Being a Leo and going through this journey, I've developed many important skills which have helped me in both my personal life and career. Qualities like time management, communication, teamwork, and running a leadership role and play a major aspect of a doctor's day-to-day life. So I believe my development as a Leo and as a doctor was brought out simultaneously. I'm genuinely thankful to Leoism for who I am today. 2. HOW HAS THAT EXPERIENCE SHAPED YOUR CAREER AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT? "In life, no one ever succeeds alone. All successful people have had mentors and a set of friends who helped them along the way." Being forever grateful for the set of Leos who were right next to me during all my hardships, I recall the memories where Leo's responsibilities were very heavy with my workload as a doctor. Explaining in short: going back to the year 2021/22, in which I was the President of Leo Club of Gampaha Metro, was the most crucial time of my medical career as I was going through my internship with 24 hrs, everyday work shifts. With a tough, strong mentor just behind me, the strongest, undefeated Secretary and Treasurer right next to me, a powerful Vice president hand in hand, impressive board members to backup and a super talented membership with me, I was able to make Leo Club of Gampaha Metro win Best Club awards at both District and Multiple District awards ceremonies despite of all the busy, tough work hours. 3. WHAT SPECIFIC LEADERSHIP QUALITIES DO YOU THINK HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS IN BOTH YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE AS A DOCTOR AND YOUR ROLE AS A GREAT LEADER? I would call it "passion" that matters the most. If you are truly in love with something, you will always make sure that a maximum of yourself will be contributed to the success. Next comes "dedication and hard work," which are the basics of a doctor. In the process of becoming a doctor, years are compensated with sleepless nights of studying and duty. So it was the same with the Leo journey, which had more sleepless nights, sacrifices and enormous hard work. 4. AS A SUCCESSFUL LEADER OF OUR LEO CLUB, HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR MEDICAL CAREER WITH YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE CLUB? Finally, it's "teamwork"; the ultimate success in everything and anything. There was always a team who contributed to my success in both professional life as well as being the Leo of the Year. I PAGE 12
6. HOW HAS YOUR FAMILY INFLUENCED OR SUPPORTED YOUR JOURNEY? At the same time, you should never accept a leadership role for the sake of gaining power or the position unless you are very sure that you will give your maximum and gain the best from that role. Be a humble leader with more love. This beautiful platform will give you thousands of opportunities to serve the world and make great friends while grooming your life to the next level, so take the opportunity and shine while making the best set of friends for life. So I'm very proud to say that Leo was not a responsibility; rather it was a joyful journey thanks to my set of friends who have been more than family. Finally, managing time in the most crucial way is the secret of balancing up with multiple roles in life ( as a doctor, Leo leader, friend, daughter and wife). Never think twice about accepting a challenge because challenges seem difficult at the moment of acceptance, but that, in turn, grooms you to be a better leader. 5. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE LEO CLUB MEMBERS WHO ASPIRE TO TAKE ON LEADERSHIP ROLES WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION? "Behind every successful woman is a family who trusted her and not the society." I come from a family which has given me the freedom to fly independently around the world. My parents trusted me so well that they never made limits on anything in my life. I PAGE 13
"Leo Club of Gampaha Metro" is more than a club for all of its members. I would rather call it home as I've met family within. I always pray for the sustainability and success of my beloved LCGM. 7. FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES AND ASPIRATIONS FOR THE LEO CLUB'S FUTURE, AND HOW DO YOU ENVISION IT CONTINUING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY? They believed my capabilities and my talent and they were always there to bless me and support me with whatever I did. With their wholehearted blessings, I was able to stand high as a doctor as well as a successful leader. Similarly, I've got a very caring husband who wishes for nothing more than my happiness. He was the person who madly wanted to see me win the Leo of the Year award and spent a number of sleepless, tiring nights with me to make all the necessary documents ready. Having a man who supports and lifts you up to your targets is, of course, a blessing. And yes, I've always made them proud. Having a strong lady leader this year at the throne, we are a powerful, well-functioning club with quality administration as always, and for sure, she will take our club to a higher level. At the same time, I see little Leo leaders being groomed to maintain the club's sustainability and standards, which I'm really proud of. I would always stand with my Leo family at every possible instant and support the new generation to apply their capabilities in a better way to the community. Let's roar together so that the voice of Leos will be heard louder. Finally, I would like to thank the editorial panel of Voice of Leos and the Club President, Leo Nimasha Jayakody, for giving me this opportunity, which was a neverexpected yet very honoured moment in my life. It is truly a privilege to be a part of the much-loved "Voice of Leos" as an interviewee. Leo Dr. Chathuri Wickramaaratchi PFLM Leo of the Year 2022/23 -Leo District 306B2 I PAGE 14

Technology Maximizing Writing Efficiency with ChatGPT Start with a clear idea of what you want to write about. Provide examples of your writing style. Use bullet points and pictures to make your article more engaging. Edit and proofread your article. ChatGPT is a powerful AI-powered tool that uses natural language processing to help you write better and faster. ChatGPT can help you brainstorm new ideas, write articles, or even create stories by providing a few prompts or examples. Here are some tips and tricks for using ChatGPT to write a successful article: ChatGPT is excellent at generating text based on your prompts, so it’s essential to clearly understand what you want to write about before you start. The content of your article can be as simple as a broad topic or as specific as a thesis statement. ChatGPT uses machine learning to generate text that sounds like it came from you, so it’s important to provide examples of your writing style. This can be a few sentences or even an entire article. The more examples you provide, the better ChatGPT will be at mimicking your writing style. Magazine and documentation articles are more likely to be read and shared if they include bullet points and pictures. ChatGPT can help you generate bullet points and suggest pictures to include in your article. While ChatGPT is great at generating text, it is not perfect. Be sure to edit and proofread your article carefully to ensure it’s error-free and reads well. Using ChatGPT to write any article can save you time and improve the quality of your writing. So why not give it a try? You may be surprised by the results. I PAGE 17
Monthly Special BreastFeeding day What is breast cancer? With more than 1 in 10 new cancer diagnoses yearly, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It is the second most frequent cancer related death among women worldwide. Breast cancer cells begin inside the milk ducts and/or the milk-producing lobules of the breast. It first appears as a tumour, and this tumour tends to spread lymphatically and hematologically (through the blood), leading to distant metastasis and poor prognosis. If left unchecked, the tumours can spread throughout the body and become fatal. Deaths from breast cancer have declined over time, but breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women overall and the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women. Increasing age Family history Inheritance of mutations in the genes BRCA2, BRCA1 and CHEK2 Smoking and alcohol usage Radiation exposure (excessive exposure to the sun or frequent blistering sunburns) Obesity What are the causes? New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit). Thickening or swelling of part of the breast. Irritation or dimpling of breast skin. Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast. Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area. What Are the Symptoms of Breast Cancer? How do you detect breast cancer early? Self-cancer examinations should be done frequently if you’re aged above 35 years. A mammogram can often find or detect breast cancer early when it's small and even before a lump can be felt. This is when it's likely to be easiest to treat. I PAGE 18 Breast Cancer
How do you detect breast cancer early? Self-cancer examinations should be done frequently if you’re aged above 35 years. A mammogram can often find or detect breast cancer early when it's small and even before a lump can be felt. This is when it's likely to be easiest to treat. However, treatment can improve symptoms and prolong a person's life. Surgery is usually the first type of treatment for breast cancer. The type of surgery you have will depend on the type of breast cancer you have. Surgery is usually followed by chemotherapy or radiotherapy or, in some cases, hormone or targeted therapies. Wait… Do men get breast cancer too? Absolutely YES! Breast cancer in men is uncommon; 1,500 new cases are diagnosed in the United States yearly, but that doesn’t mean men don’t get breast cancer. The optimal management of breast cancer in men is unknown because the rarity of the disease precludes large, randomized trials. Risk factors include testicular disease, benign breast conditions, age, Jewish ancestry, family history, and the Klinefelter syndrome. BRCA2 mutations predispose men to breast cancer. Be Physically Active. Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables – and Limit Alcohol (Zero is Best) Don't Smoke. Breastfeed, If Possible. Avoid Birth Control Pills, Particularly After Age 35 or If You Smoke. Avoid Hormone Therapy for Menopause. How can we prevent it? Treatments First, is it completely curable? Well, YES! It is possible for breast cancer to go into complete remission. The outlook tends to be better if a person receives treatment in the early stages of the disease. Advanced breast cancer may not be curable. I PAGE 19

World Af airs As my home club has entered its Golden Jubilee year, I, on behalf of my club president and team, give this clarion call to all of you that we should start finding ways of collaborating on sound projects that will bring positive impacts in the lives of many. With these few words, always know that- 'This organization has a lot to give to us; the only catch is how active we as members are.' Thank you and warm regards. Leo Aditya Agarwala Past President (2021-2022) Leo Club of Gauhati Leo District 322G | LY 2023-24 | India Respected Editorial team of Leo Club of Gampaha Metro, 306 B2 Sri Lanka. At the outset, kindly accept my earnest greetings dedicated to all the members of your enthusiastic club. It comes as a blessing for me to present an article on behalf of my club and my experience as a Leo so far. Well, as I recall my first day (1st August 2012) in my home club- Leo Club of Gauhati, Leo District 322G India, I remember myself as a very shy boy who, with very calculated steps, served in our of our the then permanent projects- Kawariya Sewa Shivir. Little did I know that this very Leo Club became a home, and there was no looking back. My home club is one of the oldest Leo Clubs in our Multiple 322 and has currently entered its Golden Jubilee year in 2023-24. Our current president, Leo Aadarsh Kashliwal and his entire team members are very much excited and keen to develop themselves through Leoism as a perfect self-development platform. You can travel to any part of the world and still feel at home if you can find just one Leo or a Lion Member in that particular cityTrust me, I ain't kidding on this. I have always believed that the time & money we as members invest here is an investment to which returns in many forms and kinds are bound to touch your feet. My home club has created opportunities where all our members have uncovered their comfort zones and explored new and better ways of working. In the past 10 years that I have had the opportunity to serve society and bring impactful changes through my home club, I personally feel that what distinguishes a Leo Club from other organizations is its vivid structure, a wide range of opportunities to unleash one's true potential, a plethora of ways to think and act for the society, perfect web for networking & learning administrative skills, etc. I PAGE 21
