Ocean reefs act as a buffer, protecting shorelines and coastal communities from the impact of big waves, storms and hurricanes. These natural miracles help to mitigate the risk for loss of life and act as a guard against shoreline erosion. But while reefs protect waterfront developments, over time, excessive shoreline construction and dredging, along with sewage and polluted runoff from agriculture can leave them damaged. When coral dies, there is a domino effect that disrupts the marine life that lives on, in or around it. Living among corals make a skeleton underneath themselves, which they live behind the corals as they grow towards sunlight, creating habitats for marine organisms, like sponges, clams and snails. Normally in the food chain, these smaller organisms attract bigger fish looking for food, which in turn fall prey to even bigger fish and marine mammals. But coral reefs ensure their life by leaving a place to hide themselves among coral reefs. As a valuable source of nitrogen and other essential nutrients, ocean corals support entire marine food-chains. They also absorb and store harmful pollutants, such as carbon, in the same way trees remove CO2 emissions from the atmosphere. This process regulates carbon levels in the waters around reef systems, providing an environment for microorganisms to thrive. Finally, corals recycle matter and nutrients from broken-down elements, generating new life from old in a process that selfperpetuates the reef’s ecosystem. N A T U R E 09 C HALF A BILLION PEOPLE RELY ON oral reefs support marine life, offering protection from strong sea waves as well as from predators. As well, coral reefs contribute to the global economy, and sea life helps to feed 1 billion people around the world. But they are also endangered. Let’s see the sad story behind the coral reefs.
10 But such ecosystems are delicately balanced and easily disrupted. Colourful coral formations are highly sensitive to changes in water temperature, light conditions or nutrients, and can eject the algae that live and feed on them – a phenomenon known as bleaching. Stressed coral turns white, leaving it vulnerable to disease, and if the algae loss occurs over a lengthy period, the reef could eventually die. When the algae disappear, creatures further up the food chain disappear, too. Climate change makes extreme storms and mass bleachings more frequent and more severe, turning some once-flourishing marine environments into underwater deserts. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has declined by 50% since 1985, due to storm damage, coral bleaching and waves of crown-of-thorns starfish suffocating the coral. Warming ocean waters prevent corals laying down their calcium carbonate skeleton, which inhibits the growth essential for a healthy reef ecosystem. Besides climate change, destructive or excessive fishing, coastal development and ocean pollution all add to the threat faced by ocean corals. According to research from the World Resources Institute, more than half of Earth’s reefs could be under threat by 2030, and unless urgent action is taken on a grand-scale, they could disappear completely by mid-century. Their loss would be devastating for the planet, as well as for the communities that rely on coral reefs for employment and tourism. "I hope for your help to explore and protect the wild ocean in ways that will restore health and, in so doing, secure hope for humankind. Health to the ocean means health for us." - Sylvia Earle, Oceanographer The long-term solution lies in addressing the underlying causes of climate change - but this is not a quick-fix. In the meantime, scientists like Kristen Marhaver, working at the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity (CARMABI) Research Station in the Caribbean, are trying to rebuild reefs by growing baby corals. She is part of a team trying to uncover the secrets of coral reproduction, which could help regenerate reefs under threat.

12 However uncomfortable and unsatisfying interactions with others may be for lonely people, they still seem to crave connections. John Cacioppo, a University of Chicago neuroscientist known as "Dr. Loneliness," proposed that loneliness is an evolved adaptation that, like hunger, indicates that something is wrong in our lives. Loneliness should encourage us to seek out social interaction, just as hunger prompts us to search for food. Individuals who experience chronic loneliness are neither innately nor socially programmed to feel that way forever. According to studies, cognitive treatments can help people feel less lonely by teaching them to notice how their actions and brain processes prevent them from making the connections they value. The experience of loneliness has to be self-reported, although researchers have developed tools such as the UCLA Loneliness Scale to help with assessing the depths of an individual’s feelings. oneliness can be difficult to study empirically because it is entirely subjective. Social isolation, a related condition, is different — it’s an objective measure of how few relationships a person has. L But loneliness has a negative impact on our health beyond just how we feel. Well you should be worried because it may result in heart disease, stroke, and excessive blood pressure. Moreover, it can increase the chance of dementia by 40% and double the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. As a result, those who feel lonely all the time have an 83% higher mortality risk than those who don't. The core features of social anxiety were not evident in loneliness. The problem with loneliness seems to be that it biases our thinking. In behavioral studies, lonely people picked up on negative social signals, such as images of rejection. According to research that was conducted, lonely people also preferred to stand farther away from strangers, trusted others less and disliked physical touch. DO YOU EXPERIENCE LONELINESS IN YOUR LIFE? Also, there should be improved ways to combat social isolation and loneliness. One brain region was significantly less active in lonely people's brain scans than it was in social people. When we consider our gut feelings, one area—the insula—tends to become active. Scientists believe that this might be a reason why lonely people have problems trusting others and they cannot rely on their [gut] feelings. Studies have shown that acts of gratitude can help us feel more positive and have stronger relationships. Follow your passions. By pursuing your passions, your mind and spirit are engaged, decreasing feelings of loneliness. By joining a recreational sports team, library book club, volunteer effort, or other activities you enjoy, you are also more likely to meet others who have shared interests. Even if you feel lonely, you are not alone. If you are feeling lonely, reach out to an understanding loved one. If your feelings of loneliness don’t go away or feel unbearable, or if you are feeling anxious or depressed, contact a mental health professional. If you need help right away, contact a hotline. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1926. Leo Tamasha Fernando Lonely people tend to daydream about social interactions, get easily nostalgic about past social events, and even anthropomorphize their pets. If you often talk with your pets as if they were human, this could be a sign as well. While loneliness can lead to a rich imaginary social life, it can make real-life social encounters less rewarding. H E A L T H

In the daily routine of pre- school, visiting religious places like sthupa, bodhi, and statue of the temple is a highlighted specialty. Leos always serve where they need. Team “Thaksalawata Athwelak '' has successfully completed phase 1 and phase 1 and they hope to renovate the children park to make the children more comfortable with education and their childhood. Maybe you cannot serve alone. But we are a team. Together we are one and together we can. Then we will be successful as a country. Join your kind helpful hands with ourselves to support helpless people. SERVE THE WORLD Children and the youth are the main pillars of every generation. If you can give your help to the children and if you can lead the youth in the correct way, it means you will guide a whole generation of the world. Leos of Gampaha Metro always take the responsibility to make the world better than it was yesterday. THAKSALAWATA ATHWELAK A preschool is the elementary place where a child gets the basic knowledge and where a child is exposed to society. After a quality analysis to serve the community, Leos of Gampaha Metro have found a place where the intention of establishing the pre-school is to give free education for low- income families. Sumithra Pre-School is one of the leading pre-schools in Mirigama Divisional Secretariat with more than 25 years of legacy. Mr. Kulasiri Weerasinghe and late Mrs. Rathna Weerasinghe established the pre-school and currently there are lawyers, doctors, engineers, teachers and many professionals who go their basic education from the pre-school. Team “Thakslawata Athwelak” visited the pre-school and identified the community need that we can support. So the team has donated stationary items to the children who step to grade 01 in the next school year and the team has succeeded to donate more 4 desks and 16 chairs to support the community service. With the donation, Leos of Gampaha Metro hope that this will be an opportunity to unleash the children’s future of low-income families.
14 WE ELEVATE YOU. NEVER MISS THE OPPORTUNITY NOW OR NEVER ELAVATE FUTURE “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” Management is something very important in our lives. Leos consistently find opportunities to experience more by learning new leadership qualities. In a Leo Club, we learn to manage the voluntary workforce to the correct pathway by giving them new opportunities. As Leos of Gampaha Metro we forecasted a shortage of members for the media team by successfully identifying the effect for the media side of the club that can occur and the effect for the operational excellence. Optimists see the opportunity in every difficulty. We invariably find opportunities to make a new leader in society. Team “Inevite” has organised a series of sessions to educate the fellow leos about how to make a quality flyer, validity of information along with designing tutorials. Indirectly we have shown them a way to make money as a freelancer or a professional designer. With the evaluation after a couple of quality sessions, the team has identified the forecasted risk was mitigated and the operations are smoothly running well. We have heard that, ‘Every dark cloud has a silver line’. Leos of Gampaha Metro are proud of their administration because they have identified the future risks, set up backup plans, mitigated the risk with correct initiatives and made new opportunities. This is why the Leo Club of Gampaha Metro is maintaining their legacy even with many challenges. If you need to be a real leader, never forget to join hands with Leos of Gampaha Metro. 18 KOLAM & PUPPETRY DO YOU KNOW? Ancient events with full musical accompaniment include Kolam and puppetry. They kept Sri Lankans' busy lives entertaining. These episodes may serve as comedic parodies of certain sociological or political events. Kolam music, on the other hand, is a low country-folk tradition. Masks were used while actors impersonated various characters or performed scenes from comedic theatre scripts. Since the villagers had to work hard all day to make a living, they were then a relief for them. Kolam and puppetry share many similarities, although with puppetry, puppets are controlled by strings rather than performers. During these protests, societal issues, domestic disputes, and political disputes were the focus, and humor was developed to amuse the crowd. Although the Kolam and puppetry are relatively uncommon sights in the current environment, they used to be there every day. Additionally, professionals are now in charge of organizing these musical events. However, there were no professionals back then, so local villagers dressed up for these occasions instead. Both of these events feature songs and background music rather than talk like in typical dramas. Let’s protect our tradition. Let’s continue the Sri Lankan Legacy. Leo Dayana Rakapaksa

JUMBLE PUZZLE 22
We, the Young Generation, who have the strength and courage to improve the world, ought to agree with and comprehend the essence of these words. As Leos, we are seen as role models in today's society, influencing the morality of the next generation to give back to the community that has given us so much. Spreading kindness to your adversaries is the first step in giving back to society. Leadership is kindness. This assertion is compelling and provocative. Although leadership is frequently associated with authority, power, and control, there is a growing realization that kindness can be just as crucial to effective leadership as anything else, if not more. Kindness encourages team members' respect and trust, which is one explanation behind this. Leaders that are nice and empathetic to their subordinates foster an atmosphere of psychological safety where members feel free to express their opinions, worries, and suggestions. Better communication, teamwork, and ultimately better results follow from this. Looking back at all our proud Leo Leaders states the best example for this statement. As a result, I formally invite all readers to join the Leo Club of Gampaha Metro, one of the ardent clubs formed for Young Active Leaders for the Future, in promoting kindness and valuing the correlation of Team Spirit. Leo Rochelle Shahali Editor 23 ‘Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an Ocean.’ -Ryunosuke Satoro - The saying "Individually we are one drop, together, we are an ocean" is credited to Ryunosuke Satoro. The strength of cooperation and solidarity is emphasized in this quotation. Even though each of us is small and insignificant on our own, when we work together, we can accomplish amazing things and become a formidable force. The remark also emphasizes the value of collaboration and how it may help achieve goals. Politics, economics, athletics, and social movements are just a few of the areas where the idea of unity and cooperation has been highlighted. In politics, nations join forces to address shared concerns affecting their citizens by forming alliances or unions. Teams collaborate in the workplace to achieve a common objective and boost efficiency. Athletes collaborate to win matches and titles in sports. People band together to fight for a common goal and effect change through social movements. A healthy and inclusive team culture is crucial, and effective leaders are aware of this. Leader may inspire their team to cooperate and openly exchange ideas by creating a climate of trust, respect, and open communication. The organization as a whole may benefit from more creative solutions as a result of this. EDITOR’S NOTE
