PRESIDENT’S
NOTE

You are doing better than you think you are. I’m proud
of you, keep going, you’ve got this!

It gives me great pleasure to pen this for the very
first issue of Voice of Leos - Volume 2. Being
someone who never wished to become a club
president but to enable Leos to do better, I take
pride in becoming the club president of Leo club
of Gampaha Metro for the year 2020/21.

Taking up the challenge of the club presidency
right after the award of “Leo of the year” has
not been easy. Me and my team have come
so far amidst great difficulties. While giving
credit for the award to my team, I trust them
to be the future leaders, the country needs
the most. I encourage each and everyone of
them to be innovative and be smart.
I’m more than happy to have a team who
consider the need assessment utmost
importance. Key is to stick to the basics.

It’s just the beginning. We all have a long way to
go. You will know when you are there. It’s the self
satisfaction. It’s the happiness you see in another’s
face. It’s the tear of joy you have looking back at
what you’ve done. It’s all about what you do with the
purest of your heart.

I am, and I will be proud of you all, when you share
your experience with me, one day, bringing back the
memories of the good times.

Cheers Leos

You are doing better than you think you are. I’m proud of
you, keep going, you’ve got this!

METRO CANVAS

Technology is a major aspect

of the 21st century which has

created marvels in the modern

world. Flyers help us inform

the community regarding an

event and it helps our clubs

gain publicity through the

online platforms. As a Leo

club, we are required to make

digital posters for campaigns,

for well wishes, etc. but the

lack of necessary tools and

skill was an issue. Graphic

designing has become a

strenuous act with the minor

knowledge and talent we

possess on technology.

Metro Canvas is an online

workshop on simple graphic

designing techniques by using

postermywall.com online

platform.

The project concluded with a
peak participation of around
80 Leos throughout the
country and the project was
deemed a resounding success
by many who participated.

Session Conducted by: Leo
Rushini Sandupama
Moderator: Leo Bhanuka

Platform: Zoom meeting.
Date: Friday 17th of July
Time: 7.30pm - 8.30pm

Internationa3l0tFh Jruielyndship Day

DAY
OF
THE
MONTH

International Friendship Day was proposed on 30th July 1958.In 1998 Winnie the Pooh
was named the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations (believe it or
not!), and in April 2011, the United Nations officially recognized 30th July as International
Friendship Day.
“Friends are like stars, you may not always notice them, but they are always watching over
you.”
FRIENDS, the most valuable thing one would gain from the leo movement. As Leos, we
meet numerous faces each day, which day by day grows into friendships that’s worth more
than all what we gain from this movement.
Some friendships are made for lifetime while some are short lived. Researchers have
concluded that people with friends tend to live longer whereas people who lack social
connections lives less, as loneliness causes a great risk of depression and high blood
pressure.
Friendship day is dedicated in honor of friends. It’s a day to commemorate the magical
bonds created by heaven.

ROARS OF OUR LEOS
International Hepatitis Day

28th July

“Viral hepatitis continues to claims around 1.4million of lives every year”

This day is commemorated to enhance the global awareness of viral hepatitis which is an
inflammation of the liver by encouraging prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), after tuberculosis, the second major
killer infectious disease is Hepatitis.
Since 2010, World Hepatitis Day has been celebrated every year with a new theme. This
year’s theme is “Hepatitis-free future”, with a strong focus on preventing Hepatitis B (HBV)
among mothers and newborns.
One of the largest organs of our body is our liver. It plays an important metabolic function
such as converting nutrients in our body, filtering toxins, storing minerals, and producing
bile to help digestion. Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver. Inflammation is
the swelling of the tissues causing damage which affects the liver functions.

9

Viral Hepatitis is a group of infectious diseases - Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E from which
Hepatitis B & C are the commonest, having a blood-borne transmission. It’s usually the
result of a viral infection or liver damage caused by drinking alcohol.

Some types will pass without any serious problems, while others can be long-lasting
(chronic) and cause scarring of the liver (cirrhosis), loss of liver function and, in some
cases, liver cancer.

Long-term (chronic) hepatitis also may not have any obvious symptoms until the liver
stops working properly (liver failure) and may only be picked up during blood tests.
In the later stages it can cause jaundice, swelling in the legs, ankles and feet, confusion,
and blood in your stools or vomit.

Alcoholic Hepatitis is caused by drinking excessive amounts of alcohol over many years.
You can reduce your risk of developing alcoholic hepatitis by controlling how much you
drink. It’s recommended that you do not regularly drink more than 14 units of alcohol
a week. Stopping drinking will usually allow your liver to recover, but there’s a risk you
could eventually develop cirrhosis, liver failure or liver cancer if you continue to drink
alcohol excessively.

Autoimmune Hepatitis is caused when the immune system attacks and damages the
liver. Eventually, the liver can become so damaged that it stops working properly. This
is treated by giving immunosuppressants which suppress the immune function and
reduces the inflammation of the liver. It is known to be idiopathic with no proper
prevention method.

Symptoms of Hepatitis are as follows:
● Fatigue.
● Sudden nausea and vomiting.
● Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially on the upper right side beneath your
lower ribs (by your liver)
● Clay-colored stools.
● Loss of appetite.
● Low-grade fever.
● Dark urine.
● Joint pain.
