Cover Description
Let’s get one thing straight: yes the goalie in the middle is me- no I do not think I’m the center of attention,
yet the furthest away from it. The thing in the middle, the cross, it represents that religion is a huge part of my
life. I try to attend church as much as possible, and I pray every day. It’s in pretty colors, because I always try to
look at things on the bright side, even during tough times.
Inside the cross are several images. The heart above me symbolizes my parents. You’ll notice the two
arrows to the right of them, that’s because a lot of things has come there way, including stress of birth. I’m not
going to share what they went through to have 5 kids, but it was very stressful for them. My parents are above
me because they’re really close to me, and the make a huge impact on my life.
The basketball to my right represents Rowan, my brother. He is always close to me. He makes a positive
impact on my life as well.
To my left you’ll see a soccer ball. That’s my sister, Ryann. She is a ways away from me because she’s
not as close to me, and she doesn’t always make a positive impact on me.
At the bottom left of the cross is the symbol of drama/theatre. This represents my sister, Reilly. Reilly used
to be nice and supportive, but now she has turned really mean, and she’s always insulting me. I think she does it
because it makes her feel better, because she is (in my opinion) jealous of me (in ways that I’m not going to say,
so as to not offend her).
At the bottom right corner is an elephant. This elephant is my brother, Nathan. The elephant is mad and
bursting because Nathan is always mean to me, sometimes using my triplets against me by saying that my
parents only wanted them and not me. He has never been supportive of my love for hockey, and he’s always
trying to stomp on me.
As you can probably tell by now, I’m not always what I seem to be. I don’t live the perfect life-in fact that
brings me to the next feature: the split after the cross.
The split resembles that there are two sides to me. The dark side represents my bad side, and all of the
things that have happened to me. The three headed demon is my triplets. Ryann is on the left, Rowan on the
right, and me in the middle. Ryann is mad because she has always been one to make me unhappy. Rowan is
both happy and sad because he can be supportive, or mean. Almost all of the time however, Rowan is
supportive. I have the worried face on, because I try to block out everything bad, and focus on the good. Just
recently I found out that I had a 50% chance of dying. I believe that god allowed me to live for a reason.
Although I feel like I haven’t found it yet, I think that it was for entertainment through hockey. My triplets and I
have been through everything together. No I do not mean that as a cute little cheesy saying. I mean it as the bad
side. As in, I never get away from them. Anyway, the peace sign above, it doesn’t mean peace. It means that I
will never, ever be one whole. I’m only a third of myself because I share everything with my triplets. I even have
to share the day that’s supposed to be about me with them- my birthday. Nothing is EVER just about me.
The light side is the brighter side of me. The “glass half full” side. I like to think that the brighter side of me
quenches the dark side, but I know there will always be the bad part of me. The numbers in the bright side
represent me. However, they are NOT what I chose. I constantly think of them because I have a 7 person family,
and I’m a triplet.
All of what I have just mentioned is in the state of kansas. I believe that Kansas is our hometown, because
both my mom and dad grew up there, and that’s where our grandparents live. Sadly though, because we have
such a big family, and a brother in college, we can only visit Kansas twice a year.
You’ll notice that Kansas is located on a completely green background. This is the final piece to my
complicated puzzle. The green is there because it can either signify a beautiful meadow, or a dark, vicious,
almost criminalizing color.
So here you have it my life in a nutshell. I don’t expect you to understand, as I don’t. While it may not
seem like the best, or the brightest, it’s my life and I’m going to live it to the fullest. After all: the moment I was
born, was the instant I started dying.
My Name
My name is something I cherish, because it is mine. It is my personal item, and something that no
one can take away from me. When I hear my name I picture the words “Hard” and “Work”. Don’t ask me
why, I have no clue, but I’d like to believe that it describes me well.
In English my name means advice. I think that this describes me well, because people will ask for
advice from me. I believe they think I’m the guy to go to because although I don’t show it, I use logic and
reality to make decisions. For example: my dad has always told me that I’ve had a gift for seeing things
develop and reading things. This gift has helped me in sports, as I have always been the one to prevent
the play from happening, instead of creating the play. I think the way I predict what is going to happen is
by using what I already know about the situation, the logic (as in what the opponent/person’s goal is),
and what possibilities there are. I use all these things in different ways, but I use it in advice, by
predicting what will happen.
So let’s say that “Jerry” wants to know if he should play lacrosse or not. What do I know? Well I
know that Jerry has always been the hard working type. I know that he plays basketball and football, but
I also know that he isn’t the most athletic, and he complains sometimes about how much practice he
has. My advice would be for him to not do it this year, but if he stills thinks he wants to next year, than go
for it. I came to this conclusion because I know that lacrosse involves a lot of running, and they practice
a lot. Also, all of the sports that Jerry plays do not involve extensions of the human body (as in a stick).
He is not used to having to control something in order to control the ball, and it requires the state of mind
that doesn’t mind even practicing at home, something I know that Jerry does not prefer. Not to mention,
a sport involving a stick will require a lot of upper-body strength, something he most likely doesn’t have
because the sports he plays require focus and lower body endurance and strength.
When my friends call my name, I get happy because I know that they respect me and know me for
who I actually am, not just because of school or about the papers I write. I know that when my friends
call my name, that they are going to be respectful as I have earned it. When others call my name,
however, it can mean a lot of different things. It can mean that I didn’t do something right, that I need to
fix something, that I didn’t please someone, or something else along those lines.
When I hear my name, I think of the color red. Red can either be good or bad. It can be the sign of
pain and death, or it can be the color of flowers and berries. My name makes me think of laughter and
trains. I don’t know why I think of trains. Trains have the power to pull tons and tons of weight, and shake
the Earth. However, they also have to power to cause injury and death. Some people see a train as
terrifying while others see it as an amazing invention. I hope that people will see me the later way.
The tone of voice that i hear my name in evokes different memories. If it is the tone that says
“Y our’re in trouble” then I think of my mom getting mad at me. If it is in a laughing tone, I think of the fun
times I’ve had with my friends. If it’s like a cheering tone, I remember some of the great saves I’ve made
in my hockey career. If my name is called out in an excited tone, I think of the merry Christmases I’ve
had with my family. I do not know why I think of these things, all I know is that I do.
When people find out that my name is Rhett, they ask me if i was named after the well known
Rhett Butler. My answer is always the same, “No. My parents just got the name from him”. I sometimes
wonder if people I meet judge me off of Rhett Butler. I wonder if he was a good influence or a bad one. I
just hope that I will be able to set a new meaning to the name “Rhett” because I should not be judged on
people before me, but instead judged by the way that I influence people. I should set my own meaning. I
don’t care that Rhett Butler owned the name that I do. He was living his life. Now I’m living mine.
Myself as an Object
The most important feature of Rhett is that he’s like a hockey puck. A hockey puck is formed from bouncy, soft material, and
turned into a hard, reliable cylinder. For a while Rhett was being “Spoon Fed’ by life. He was given all of the answers. Everything he
wanted came to him. When Rhett was little, he had asked to play football, and was immediately told yes-no questions were asked.
He didn’t have to prove himself. But now, he has to be chosen to make a team. He has to work hard to prove himself. All of his goals
were given to him but when the spoon feeding stopped; he soon realized that if he wanted to achieve his goals he’d have to work for
them. He wasn’t always the hard-working type and he didn’t always understand what it meant to earn something. Being spoon fed by
life, is like being a soft material. Soft materials typically look nicer, but they can’t take as much damage. They’re not strong enough to
withhold certain things. When Rhett was being “Spoon fed” by life, he wasn’t used to the weight of things. He wasn’t ready to be told
that he couldn’t have something. He wasn’t taking the hardships of life directly. It was like he had his own little forcefield. Hard
material is just like working hard, and earning what you want. You have to work hard to be a hard material. Rhett has worked hard in
many ways. The most notable, would probably be in the form of grades. He has worked hard all his life to keep up good grades.
When Rhett was in elementary school, he had never made it to the accelerated math (ELO), and was always one point away from
making it. However, this year he DID make it to accelerated math. It was very hard for him because they were working on things that
Rhett had never even heard about, due to not being accelerated before. He went home and worked for hours on end, asking for help,
and doing extra work trying to understand. Eventually, he got the hang of things, and now holds a strong “A” in math. This shows that
Rhett works hard, and will hopefully continue to do so throughout life. A hard material is able to take hard hit. It doesn’t split or crack
after a little slap. When Rhett was in 6th grade, he had taken a really hard blow to the toe with a hockey stick, and was in a lot of
pain. He was too afraid to go to the doctor, because they might tell him he had to sit out. He played 1 hockey game and 2 baseball
games. Finally, when the pain became too much to bare, he told his parents. He went to the doctor and found out that he had a
fractured and displaced growth plate, and a torn ligament in his toe. He was told that he’d only be out for a couple weeks, and was
insanely grateful. However, every time he went back to the doctor, they kept telling him that he’d have to wait another two weeks.
Eventually, two weeks turned into one month. One month turned into three, and Rhett had ended up missing hockey tryouts. This
was a terrible blow because he has trouble sitting out for more than 2 days, let alone 3 months. He became very stressed, and was
constantly mad at the world. He soon realized that he wouldn’t make it through being mad and depressed. He started to make the
most of what had “bounced” off of the blow, and went on with life, and acted like nothing had happened. He had bounced off the
broken toe, and soon ended up back getting out of breath. Working until he couldn’t anymore. Sometimes, a puck will just bounce
right off that slap, instead of absorbing it. A hockey puck is the same way. It used to be soft rubber, but it was formed by the cold, into
a hard, durable disk.
When a puck hits something hard, it bounces off. Rhett doesn’t collapse when it comes to obstacles in life. He bounces off
like it’s nothing, and finds a way through it. After being put through the stress of inactivity for 3 months, Rhett just stopped letting his
toe affect him. He “bounced” off the blow and decided to change his attitude. Suddenly, he was much happier, laughing and smiling
once again. A puck is the thing a group of people rely on to have fun. Similarly, people have learned that they can depend on Rhett,
hence the reason he plays so many positions where he cannot be backed up by another player. His teammates rely on him to do the
things he needs to in order to win. Pucks are shot in the air, and thrown onto the ice. If they’re shot too hard, they break into two
pieces. Rhett can be lifted high, or dropped hard. . However, he can be slapped around, and if he takes too much stress, he can split
in two. Rhett has been playing hockey for about 3 years now. When he first started out, he was horrible. He wasn’t worth anything,
but his coach kept helping him, even when it seemed useless. Rhett had progressed almost aggressively, in skill. He soon competed
in a national hockey competition, where he was selected to represented his state in the tournament. However, that’s when he got
dropped. His coach told him that if he wanted to get even better, he needed to play ice hockey (He had been playing roller hockey).
He tried out and was selected for a team, but only as the back up to the main goalie. His new coach told him that only if the team got
up by three, would Rhett be put in. However, his coach did not stay true to his word, and Rhett was not put in. Later in the season,
the main goalie got injured, and was out for the rest of the season. Rhett took this opportunity and proved himself to everyone. He
played half of the season and got 6 shutouts, lead his team to 3 championships, and 2 semi finals. This is when Rhett got noticed.
The next season, his new coach selected him for the travel team, while his old coach begged him to come back and play down for
him again. When a puck hits something too hard, it’ll break right in two.Rhett understands that no matter how high he travels, there
will always be something hard coming his way-it’s just a matter of if he can take it and bounce off, or if he collapses and splits. He
can cause pain, or cause fun. No matter how high pucks are shoot, they’ll always end up hitting the boards. Pucks hurt when
someone gets hit by it, but at the same time, they can be fun to play with. Rhett can be slapped, and be cheered for, or be caught
and booed for. When a puck is slapped past the goalie, the crowd cheers. If he is caught by the goalie, people boo. Rhett’s goals
depend on the way others handle him. If they choose to get rid of him, or give him a shot, that’s up to them. A puck won’t just roll into
the net. They need to be guided through it. If the player chooses to pass, then they get rid of it. They are constantly put through
stress, but they never stop moving. Rhett is constantly put through stress, both emotionally and physically. Most of that coming from
playing hockey 5-6 nights a week, and putting himself through a lot of wear-and-tear, leading to injuries ranging anywhere from a
hip-flexor injury, to stitches from a high stick, to a deep knee-bone contusion. Along with physical stress, he endors just as much
mental stress. Rhett made a deal with his parents: he had to keep his grades above an 85%, or else he wasn’t allowed to play
hockey. Rhett still strives to get straight “A’s”, and that adds even more stress. On top of all of this, as said before, he has to solve
problems between his friends, and classmates. While this may be a lot, or not a lot of stress, Rhett believes it’s up to him to just keep
going, and keep trying, because the cold will always be there. It’s just up to him if it stops him.
Just Because
Just because I play hockey
Don’t think I’m stupid
Don’t try to act tough
Still act like my equal
Just because I play hockey
Doesn’t mean I think I’m better than you
Doesn’t make me popular
Doesn’t mean I think I’m cool
Just because I play hockey
Doesn’t mean that I’m mean
Doesn’t make me a bad person
Doesn’t make me higher than you
Just because I play hockey - just try to understand.
