VOLUME 1 What is SDG 6: CLEAN WATER and SANITATION Sustainable management of water resources and access to safe water and sanitation are essential for unlocking economic growth and productivity, and provide significant leverage for existing investments in health and education. Water shortages undercut food security and the incomes of rural farmers while improving water management makes national economies, the agriculture and food sectors more resilient to rainfall variability and able to fulfil the needs of growing population.

REJUVENATE - Purify All Half of the world’s population still does not have adequate access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) which could have prevented at least 1.4 million deaths and 74 million disability-adjusted life years in 2019, according to the latest report by the World Health Organization (WHO) and an accompanying article published in The Lancet. “With growing WASH-related health risks seen already today through conflicts, the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, the reemergence of cholera hotspots, and the long-term threats from climate change, the imperative to invest is stronger than ever” said Dr Maria Neira, Director, WHO Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health. “We have seen improvements in WASH service levels over the last 10 years, but progress is uneven and insufficient” A Big Difference!
VOLUME 1 Among children under five, unsafe WASH was responsible for 395 000 deaths and 37 million DALYs, representing 7.6% of all deaths and 7.5% of all DALYs in this age group. This included 273 000 deaths from diarrhoea and 112 000 deaths from acute respiratory infections. These diseases are the top two infectious causes of death for children under five globally. Important disparities were noted between regions and income groups. More than three-quarters of all WASHattributable deaths occurred in the WHO African and SouthEast Asia regions, while 89% of attributable deaths were from low- and lower-middle income countries. However, even high-income countries are at risk, as 18% of their diarrhoeal disease burden could be prevented through improved hand hygiene practices. Burden of disease attributable to unsafe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene: 2019 update presents estimates of the burden of disease attributable to unsafe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for 183 WHO Member States disaggregated by region, age and sex for the year 2019. The estimates are based on four health outcomes - diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, undernutrition, and soil-transmitted helminthiases. Diarrhoeal disease accounted for most of the attributable burden, with over one million deaths and 55 million DALYs. The second largest contributor was acute respiratory infections from inadequate hand hygiene, which was linked to 356 000 deaths and 17 million DALYs.
REJUVENATE - Purify All Enough clean water is essential for our economy, communities, and health. In order to have healthy populations downstream, we need clean water upstream. The streams and wetlands where they start determine the condition of the lakes, bays, rivers, and coastal waterways. Through their ability to retain floodwaters, replenish groundwater supplies, filter pollutants, and provide as habitat for fish and wildlife, streams and wetlands offer numerous advantages to towns. Human health depends on access to clean water. One in three Americans, or approximately 117 million, obtain their drinking water from streams that were prone to pollution prior to the implementation of the Clean Water Rule. Clean water is essential to our beloved way of life because it gives wildlife a place to live and places to fish, paddle, surf, and swim in healthy ecosystems. Clean water is essential to our economy since it is necessary for agriculture, tourism, energy production, manufacturing, and other economic sectors to thrive. The Cleaner, The Better
VOLUME 1 WHAT IS THE CLEAN WATER RULE? “Because no matter who we are or where we come from, we’re all entitled to the basic human rights of clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and healthy land to call home.” Martin Luter King III Due to Supreme Court rulings from 2001 and 2006, protection for millions of acres of wetlands and approximately 60% of the country’s waterways has become convoluted and difficult. The cornerstone of our country’s water resources, streams and wetlands are proved to have the most effects on downstream water quality and are thus protected by the Clean Water Rule. The U.S. Army and the EPA are working together to make sure that the waterways covered by the Clean Water Act are more accurately defined, predictable, understandable to businesses and industry, and compliant with the law and current scientific understanding.
REJUVENATE - Purify All Image WATER That Has Been Contaminated Clean water and sanitation face persistent challenges globally. Millions still lack access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation, particularly in marginalized communities. Insufficient infrastructure and funding hinder progress, leading to water scarcity and poor sanitation. Open defecation contributes to the spread of diseases, emphasizing the urgent need for improved sanitation practices. Water pollution from industrial runoff and untreated wastewater further degrades water quality, impacting ecosystems and human health. Climate change exacerbates these issues, affecting water availability and increasing the frequency of extreme weather events. Additionally, conflicts and displacement disrupt water services, leaving vulnerable populations without access to essential resources. Addressing these challenges demands concerted efforts to improve infrastructure, enhance water management, and promote sustainable practices, ensuring equitable access to clean water and sanitation for all.
VOLUME 1 Contaminated water poses a serious threat to public health and the environment. Whether tainted by industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, or improper waste disposal, water pollution introduces harmful substances such as heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria, and viruses. Consuming or using contaminated water can lead to a range of health issues, from mild illnesses to severe diseases. It is crucial to address water contamination through monitoring, effective treatment processes, and adherence to environmental regulations. Timely intervention and proper management are essential to ensure the safety and sustainability of water sources, safeguarding both human wellbeing and ecological balance.

REJUVENATE - Purify All “In modern times, sanitation and health have always been closely related. Only a good sanitary environment can make people healthier.”
VOLUME 1 Why is it important? According to statistics from the World Health Organization, more than 1.5 billion people around the world do not have basic sanitation facilities. Although this situation basically occurs in poor countries, this has also led to nearly 673 million people choosing to live outdoors in 2019 Defecation. This poor sanitary environment also allows diarrheal diseases such as cholera and dysentery to appear, exacerbating children’s developmental delays and even death. According to research reports, in Ecuador, 24% of the rural population drinks contaminated water, 21% of children there are stunted, and 18% of children are underweight. Therefore, a good sanitation environment is very important. It can effectively reduce the spread of intestinal worms, schistosomiasis and trachoma, isolate those neglected tropical diseases, and reduce cases of child malnutrition and death. When the water problem is solved, the enrollment rate of children and the employment rate of women will also increase. In addition to a sanitary environment, personal hygiene is also very important. If people do not pay attention to their own hygiene, it is easy for people to weaken their immunity and get sick due to poor hygiene. After experiencing COVID-19, people have become more concerned about personal hygiene. People have begun to use disinfectant before entering the house, and they have always worn masks, just to avoid being infected with viruses. After all, viruses and bacteria are everywhere. In this era, most fruits and vegetables are sprayed with chemicals to prevent them from getting insects, so we must soak them in water before eating them. We should also avoid buying food from outside stalls, make sure the food is not dirty, and avoid causing diarrhoea, dizziness, etc. after eating. At the same time, we must also develop good hygiene habits, such as bathing frequently, washing hands before meals and after using the toilet, cleaning the environment frequently, and exercising appropriately to make the body healthier.
REJUVENATE - Purify All “What is the NGO?” Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are organizations established independently of the government. They are typically nonprofit entities whose members are mostly active in humanitarian or social science fields. However, the things this organization does are mainly for the public benefit, so their funds come from donations. Among them, some non-governmental organizations exist to protect water sources, such as Lifewater International, Water is Life, WaterLex, World Water Council, The Water Project and Sky Juice. However, among these organizations, Lifewater International is a predominantly Christian organisation. They believe that clean and safe water is essential for human survival and is the first step to climbing out of poverty. Lifewater International organizations have made its mission to provide safe and clean water to impoverished women and children in addition to improved health and sanitation. Investigation showed that on June 16, 2023, on the beach in Penang, the nongovernmental organizations Aga Khan Cultural Trust and Ismaili Civilization Far East teamed up with the Penang Island City Council and Think City to organize a cleaning activity. Among the garbage picked up that day, a total of 436 kilograms of wood, 175.5 kilograms of marine garbage, and 161 kilograms of plastic were collected. The rest also includes 59 kilograms of metal, 39 kilograms of glass, 20 kilograms of Polygon, etc., totaling 966 kilograms of garbage. According to interviews, 800kg of garbage was picked up at the same location last year. It can be said that if it were not for the existence of ngo, no one would pick up these man-made garbage.
VOLUME 1 A nongovernmental organization (NGO) is an organization that is not under the jurisdiction of the government.
