Ana Homonnay was born and raised in was expected.
São Paulo, Brazil, and has worked as a
documentary director for MTV. Ashley Nyssa Zinn
Thompson was born in Arkansas and
her love for the American landscape Nyssa Zinn is Poppy’s latest addition. She
prompted her to document her vision of art directs, set designs, and prop styles
the USA. Fascinated with the magic of all with the grace and calm of both a true
childhood, the storytelling photography professional and a Northern Californian. Her
duo formed Thompson Homonnay in love for the ocean isn’t surprising once you
2014. As Poppy’s dynamic photography have spent any kind of time with her and
duo, they create innovative images of her amazing creativity comes thru in all of
kids, teens and more. her projects, including Poppy’s own recent
printed promos. Her spare time right now is
spent doing yoga, surfing and getting ready
for her first born child this Winter.

A Note From The Editor

As the weather cools down for those of us not
in Northern California, the smell of autumn
drifts through the air. The time has once again
come for making soups, baking goodies and
marking down all of those holiday dates on the
calendar. Soon, we’ll be spending much of our
time hanging out and laughing with friends
and family.
This season, our magazine’s theme is Eat, Drink
and Be Merry, which feels like a perfect fit for
this comfy and celebratory time of year. Our
team has shared the many ways they create
joyful holiday feelings for themselves and their
families. From making something yummy for
a gathering of friends to simply enjoying the
Indian summer the Bay Area is known for, each
and every idea is delightful and apropos.
We hope that you spend this time of year
getting cozy by the fire with a warm drink and
our merry magazine to keep you company.

Peanut Butter
& Jelly

To say that I am obsessed with peanut
butter (and jelly) is a total understatement.
I was born in Oklahoma and it was there
that I was taught by my grandpa that
peanuts are an “anytime snack” and that
peanut butter is delicious on anything. My
grandpa always had a handful of peanuts
to eat. He made his own peanut butter
and crafted amazing peanut brittle every
holiday season, enough to give to his eight
children and twenty-nine grandchildren
as gifts every year! Pancakes were never
eaten without peanut butter (and they still
aren’t in my house).
Luckily for me, I married another true lover
of the peanut and a fun-food enthusiast.
He’s the only other person I know who can
throw back as much peanut butter as I can
- sometime’s more. When the day came
to finally allow our first daughter to safely
start eating peanut butter, the look on her
face made me the proudest mom ever. I
think this obsession might be hereditary.
Over the past many years, I have often
fantasized that I would drop everything to
present the world with the truly amazing
peanut butter and jelly recipes we come up
with. Who knows, maybe one day I will! For
now, we sure do enjoy crafting incredible
treats for ourselves and our loved ones. We
make them for the holidays, just like my
grandpa did.

Baking. It should be so simple. A few
ingredients, add heat and you’re good to
go. Easy as pie, so they say.
Except that it’s not. Baking ranks up there
with the black arts. It’s one of those things
that you need to be an apprentice to
master. If your teacher is a sorcerer, all the
better. Of all my food-related experiences,
baking holds one of the highest levels of
respect. I’m not sure what goes on in the
minds of those who have mastered it, but I
sure respect it.
Della Fattoria in Petaluma, a small bakery
with a legendary reputation as one of the
best in Sonoma County, is one of those
places where people will line up any day
of the week. There’s no specific reason for
this - it’s just that good.
I spent a harried day shooting there, diving
out of the way as the bakers ran around
and kneaded, sliced and racked the loaves
while critical seconds ticked by. The
temperature was around 100 degrees, but
nobody cared at all. To see the precision
and teamwork required to crank out as
many loaves as they do...“amazing” is not
quite close enough a word to describe it.
What I will say is that when I look at those
loaves, baguettes and muffins, all with
their distinct shapes and smells, I see
much more than just bread on a shelf. I see
something mysterious and beautiful that,
well, is simply magic.

The Secret Of The Sea

It is no wonder that my associations with
celebration and tradition surround the
ocean. As a baby, my dad would carry
me in his front pack to walk along foggy
Baker Beach in San Francisco while dinner
cooked in the oven. I relate celebratory
experiences to the ocean, to creating
peace and letting my eyes, my brain and
all my senses go completely out of focus.
For me, joy exists in the unexpected
experiences that occur when I tune out of
the everyday and into the unstructured.
The uncontrollable elements of water, air
and land colliding into some of the most
beautiful places on earth are where I feel
the most joyous and full. My serenity
around the holidays comes from the
unorganized, unexpected and explorative
qualities that you encounter when you let
your feet touch the sand and experience
nature with the ones you love the most.

We took our first family vacation this
year and traveled to Bridgeport, CA.
We had an amazing time exploring the
area. We decided to stay at the Willow
Springs Motel, a 50s-era motor lodge
located between Bridgeport and Mono
Lake. It was an amazing place to stay.
We met fellow adventurers and came
away with some new friends. One of
the sights we were excited to take our
son to was the ghost town of Bodie. I
had researched back roads to take and
found one that passed by the Chemung
Mine in Masonic, another ghost town.
Visiting two ghost towns and driving on
some back roads? This was turning into
an awesome trip! We also took the 4x4
roads that looked down on Mono Basin
and explored an amazing Gold Rush-
era museum in Bishop. As with most
great vacations, the time passed by
quickly and before we knew it we were
heading back to the Bay Area. We had
such a great time as a family, exploring
and sharing the experience together.
It’s comforting knowing that we just
scratched the surface of things to do
and see. We’re looking forward to our
next family trip.
