Go Red For Women

Heart disease remains the no. 1 killer of women, more than all forms of cancer combined.
Fortunately, we know that we have the power to change that statistic because 80 percent
of cardiac events can be prevented with education and simple lifestyle changes. Go Red
For Women is leading the battle against heart disease. The more a woman knows about
her risk, the better chance she has of beating it.
Since 2004, the Go Red For Women movement has empowered women to take charge
of their heart health and saved countless lives. The movement challenges women to know
their risk for heart disease and provides them with the tools and resources needed to live a
heart-healthy life. During the last year, the Houston Go Red For Women Campaign reached
more than 27,000 women with lifesaving information. Go Red For Women inspires women
to make lifestyle changes, mobilize communities and shape policies to save lives.
United, we are working to improve the health of all women. By harnessing the energy,
passion and power of women, the Go Red For Women movement is making an impact on
wiping out heart diseases for good.

2017 Houston Go Red For Women Campaign Chairs

The 13th annual Go Red For Women Luncheon celebrated the power of today’s woman –
and the generations to come – under the leadership of Vicki and John Crum, who served
as the first couple to chair the campaign. The Crums hosted an unforgettable afternoon that
inspired a record-breaking number of guests to honor the heart health of the women in their
lives and raised more than $1.5M in the fight against heart diseases and stroke.
Vicki and John Crum are longtime friends and supporters of the American Heart Association.
Most recently, the couple made a generous investment to support the Go Red For Women
movement and CPR training and education efforts right here in Houston. John is an AHA
board member, and he and Vicki are both proud members of the Circle of Red, leading the
“March to 100.”

to recruiting 100 Circle of Red members to
pledge $5,000, contributing to a larger gift
of half a million dollars. The campaign is
well on its way to reaching that goal, which
would make Houston the first in the country
to give at this level through Circle of Red.

2017 Open Your Heart Chair

Myrtle Jones

Myrtle Jones, Senior Vice President of Tax at Halliburton, served as the Open Your Heart Chair for
the 2017 Go Red For Women Campaign. The presence of heart disease in Myrtle’s family is what
drives her commitment to the cause as she shared in a moving speech at the luncheon.
“Heart disease has been present in my life for generations. My grandmother, mother and sister
have all been impacted. I have seen first-hand the pain that heart diseases cause, and I have felt
the despair of watching a loved one suffer.
Go Red has shown me that it doesn’t have to be that way. With research and education, we can
reach more women and teach them about prevention, so that one day we won’t have to see our
loved ones gone too soon. I believe that because of research, my mom is still going strong at 91
today.
Considering the impact the Go Red For Women movement has made
already, it’s hard to believe the campaign is only a little over a
decade old. I often wonder how if something like this had been
around 15, 20, 30 years ago, how many lives could have been
changed and saved.”
Myrtle’s leadership and personal investment in the
campaign contributed to a 136% increase in
Open Your Heart giving.

Open Your Heart is your opportunity to be part
of something big and enables the American
Heart Association to advance our efforts in
eliminating heart disease, the No. 1 killer of
women. Alone you can make a difference, but
together we can make an impact. As we come
together to celebrate the energy, passion and
power of women today, consider making a
lifesaving contribution to help us eliminate
heart diseases once and for all.

Celebrando el Sabor

The American Heart Association’s Latina Leadership Circle hosted Celebrando el Sabor, a culturally-
relevant, healthy living event focused on educating Hispanic women about their risk for heart disease.
Guests learned easy steps they can take to improve their health, heard from a survivor and enjoyed
healthy cooking demonstrations and tastings by local chefs.
Heart disease is the no. 1 killer of women, with 90 percent of women having one or more risk factors
for developing heart disease. Hispanics and Latinos, however, face even higher risks of cardiovascular
diseases because of high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. Through events like Celebrando el
Sabor, the AHA is reaching more women where they are with lifesaving education.

16

17

Vicki and John Crum, 2017 Go Red For Women Campaign Chairs, generously opened their hearts and home to
host a holiday party in early December to kick off the holiday season. The intimate group of friends and Circle of
Red members celebrated the festive spirit by enjoying delicious bites and exchanging holiday plans. Circle of Red
member and survivor, Temika Jones, brought a special meaning to the evening, sharing her story of suffering a
massive heart attack just five days after giving birth to her daughter Madison.
Temika was counting her blessings and on cloud nine after the arrival of her second child. Her euphoria would
be short-lived, though, after learning the chest pain she’d been experiencing was actually a serious problem. The
mom of two had a massive heart attack and would have to undergo multiple surgeries. Temika described the
agony of being away from her son and newborn daughter as an even greater pain than the surgeries that lied
ahead for her.
The Go Red For Women campaign is especially important to Temika as she believes whole-heartedly that more
women need to take care of themselves and put their health first. She is committed to using her story to inspire
people to take charge of their health and give to the American Heart Association.

Holidays at the Crums

19

February marks the national celebration of American Heart Month, when the American Heart Association
shines its torch on the number one killer of all Americans – heart disease. While heart disease is a risk
for all Americans, it’s no secret that women are at a greater risk. In fact, cardiovascular diseases cause
one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Over the past
decade, the AHA has made remarkable progress through its Go Red for Women Campaign; however,
there is still much work to do and awareness to raise so more women can be reached and more lives
saved.
National Wear Red Day on February 3 officially kicked off Heart Month 2017 with events across the
nation to help raise funds to support awareness, education and advocacy efforts in the fight against
cardiovascular diseases. Houston media, companies and individuals showed up loud and proud by
wearing their favorite red threads and “going red” for women.

Executive Breakfast in Red

Houston’s most influential ladies (and a few men) gathered at the Manor House at the Houstonian Hotel for
the Executive Breakfast in Red in late February for a morning of networking and saving lives. Guests donned
their red power suits and dresses while enjoying a heart-healthy breakfast and a powerful presentation by
key members of the 2017 Go Red For Women campaign leadership team.
Shauna Clark, Head of Employment and Labor for Norton Rose Fulbright and proud member of the
American Heart Association’s Houston Board of Directors, kicked off the morning with a reminder that
heart disease remains the no. 1 killer of women, killing one woman every 80 seconds. Guests also heard
from campaign chairs Vicki and John Crum, Open Your Heart Chair Myrtle Jones and Dr. Stephanie Coulter,
Director for Women’s Heart and Vascular Health at the Texas Heart Institute, and guest were encouraged
to get involved and support the American Heart Association.

Elizabeth Anthony’s
Circle of Red Fashion Show

For the second year in a row, the Circle of Red hosted an exclusive, invitation-only fall fashion event at
Elizabeth Anthony in Uptown Park Houston, benefiting the American Heart Association. Guests enjoyed
lite bites and bubbly while being treated to a sneak peek of the season’s latest trends. The packed
house buzzed with excitement as a select few Circle of Red ladies strutted their stuff down the runway
wearing Talbot Runhof 2017 spring collection. The evening was brought to a poignant pause when Akima
Taylor, a wife, mother of three and registered nurse shared her personal story of survival after suffering
a heart attack at just 38-years-old. The young mom’s healthy medical history and active lifestyle prior to
the attack helped to combat the false perception of heart diseases being an “older man’s disease” and
underscored the need for more women-specific cardiovascular research.

25

Corporate Wellness

The American Heart Association hosted the 2017 Workplace Health Symposium where corporate
wellness and HR professionals were invited to hear from industry leaders on the latest in workplace
health solutions and the importance of implementing a comprehensive wellness program in their
organizations. With a healthier workforce comes happier employees, improved morale, and
increased productivity leading to lower healthcare costs. The AHA works with over 90 Houston-area
companies to help build a culture of health and protect their most important asset – their employees.

26

27

Vestido Rojo

Latinas united in heart and spirit at American Heart Association’s Vestido Rojo, an annual health and
wellness symposium created to address the disparity of health education and awareness among
Hispanic communities. Guests enjoyed healthy bites, shopping, a pop-up Zumba class and heard from
medical experts on the importance of knowing your numbers and family history. Featured speakers
included Univision’s Rebecca Suarez and doctors Carmen Landrau and Rocio Harbison. National
Go Red Spokeswoman and heart transplant survivor Amanda DeJesus was also a featured speaker,
sharing her heart story and the impact AHA research has made on her life.

As gatekeepers of family health, Latinas play an important role in the fight against heart disease. The
Go Red For Women movement celebrates the energy, passion and power of women to unite against
the no. 1 killer of women and become a beacon of change within their families and communities.

2017 Go Red For Women Campaign

Campaign surpasses $1M mark for the first time in Houston

Hearts united on Mother’s Day Weekend at the American Heart Association’s Houston Go Red For Women
Luncheon on Friday, May 12. The 13th annual event celebrated the power of today’s woman – and the
generations to come – under the leadership of Vicki and John Crum, who served as the first couple to chair
the event. With the help of ABC13’s Gina Gaston and Ilona Carson, the Crums hosted an unforgettable
afternoon that inspired a record-breaking number of guests to honor the heart health of the women in their
lives and raised more than $1.5M in the fight against heart diseases and stroke.
Joan Lunden was this year’s guest of honor and keynote speaker. Through sharing her own health journey
and story of motherhood, Lunden inspired guests to take ownership of their health and become their own
best advocate.
Joining Lunden to share her own personal story of resilience was Kelly Nieto, a 40-year-old Houston
mother of three, karate black belt candidate and the featured survivor.

Kelly Nieto

Kelly Nieto is a 40-year-old Houston mother of three, karate black belt candidate and
this year’s featured survivor. After a series of unexpected deaths in the family, including
her grandmother at 27-years-old, aunt at 25-years-old and mother at 19-years old,
Nieto believes she is alive today because of the persistence of a woman who chose
to be her mother, her adoptive mother Brenda, who embodied the Go Red spirit and
would not give up without getting to the bottom of this tragic family history. Brenda’s
efforts brought an early diagnosis for Kelly, which allowed her to get the treatment and
care she needed to save her from suffering the same fate of the women before her.

Kelly’s three daughters joined her on stage as she thanked the American Heart
Association for funding lifesaving research and asked the audience to give in
honor of her family, those lost too soon to heart diseases and future generations.

Since 2012, the AHA has funded over
$44M in projects related to heart rhythm
disorders like Kelly’s and her daughters.

Go Red Girlfriend

More than 200 women joined in the fight against cardiovascular diseases at the Go Red Girlfriend
health symposium. An estimated 44 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease and
stroke – the No.1 and No.5 killers of all women. In fact, 90 percent of all women have one or more risk
factors for cardiovascular diseases and stroke. African-American women, however, are at a greater
risk for cardiovascular disease than Caucasians and are less aware of their risk factors. The American
Heart Association is working hard to change that statistic with events like Go Red Girlfriend.
The 2017 event was held at Brentwood Baptist Church and featured heart-healthy cooking
demonstrations, line dancing, a Q&A session with medical experts, survivor testimonials and live
entertainment.
