Instructions for How to Knit with Tape Yarn

Picture #1
Here the knitter is getting ready to “Cast on.” It is not done by wrapping the yarn, but, by inserting
the needle into the edge of the tape yarn and pulling a small bite back through. The use of a smaller
needle with a good point is essential here.

Picture #2
Here the knitter holds the yarn in the left hand, piercing the tape with the needle.

The New stitch. Note the distance in between the stitches on the right needle. The key to this style of
knitting is to keep the distance consistent.

‘Bite!’

Picture #6
Getting ready to pull the ‘bite’ of tape yarn back through the stitch on the left needle. It is very
important at this stage that your needle is not too big. There is not much room within the tape edge.

Alternative Design Ideas
Changing color.
Pick an edge to knit into, this color is mostly hidden by the edge of the following row. When you
wish to knit into the opposite edge, allow a little more length in between piercings as the twist uses
up more yarn.
Knitting into the same edge for the entire project will produce the results shown above.
If you wish to show more colors of the yarn in one piece, knit into one color for one row then into the
other color for the next row.
Twist during the row.
For example. Put 9 stitches onto the needle, knit the first 3 in one color, the next 3 in the opposite
color and the last 3 in the first color, this will give a scalloped effect.
Changing colors half way across.
This will produce a scarf with two colors showing on the same side. One color on the left side and the
other color on the right side. The same thing will occur on the reverse of the scarf. Cast on an even
number of stitches for this project.
