The Rafflesian 2003

IN MOTION

R.W. Hullett took up the role of Principal for thirty-six years (the longest-
serving head of the Institution), lighting the long battle for the advancement
of learning lor close to (our decades in the Institution, from 1870 to 1906.
Remembered by the Institution in Hullett House, Hullett Memorial Library
and Hullett scholarship, he left his mark on the school by revamping the
academic programme, supporting games and sports, leading it on during
its most momentous years in history.

Hullet House Motto: Steadfast et Versatile

It was an eventful year for Hullett House, culminating
in Hullett House clinching the House Championships.

On the sporting front, Hullett House successfully
defended the Inter-House Track and Field
Championships for the fifth year running, and also
won the NAPFA inter-house competition.

For the first time in many years, Hullett
won the Cross Country Championships
as well. It was indeed an amazing feat
on our part as three divisions won the
division champions. Hullett House has
also done well in the two House
Carnivals, winning the 'B' and 'C'
Division Table Tennis competition, and
many other events. The 'hat-trick' had
indeed astounded the rest of the school,
proving that Hullett is not a house to mess with.

Hullett House has also done well in the aesthetics, proving that we are indeed a well-
rounded House. We emerged champions in the Chinese Drama Camp, and runners up in
the Inter-House Debating Championships and Drama Feste script writing competitions as
well. Along in the bag are events such as software-writing and multimedia design
competitions.

Hullett House also introduced its first ever Hullett Carnival, an event organised solely by
students, where Hulletians came together during the holidays to enjoy a day of games and
activities. This is a first time event for any house and despite some minor failures it was still
a wonderful event. Through this, the bonds between Hulletians were strengthened. This
also allowed the Secondary 3s to get their first experience organizing and running an
activity, which proved invaluable in their training for Exco positions in Hullett House.

I would like to thank our teachers, especially Mr Johari and Mrs Matthews for their
guidance and support the Hullett Exco for their dedication and enthusiasm, the other
captains Justin and Ronald for always supporting me, the Hullett Committee for doing
their jobs well no matter how trivial, and last but definitely not least all Hulletians.
The championship belongs to each and every one of you as well.

Finally, the Hullett Exco of 2003 would like to congratulate the Exco or 2004 on their
election, and we have the utmost confidence that under the leadership of Azizul, Justin
and Jiashun, Hullett House will continue to reach greater heights, and prove that all
Hulletians are indeed steadfast and versatile.

Named after John Barret Bayley ( 1857-1870)
"from a comparatively small and inferior school,
Mr. Bayley during his long term of office raised
Raffles Institution to a large and flourishing
establishment."

Bayley

John Barret Bayley served the school as its headmaster from 1857 right up till
1870 benefiting the school greatly Under his expert guidance, the school
reached its high water mark. Bayley was brought in to replace the previous
headmaster and this arrangement allowed the school to reach greater heights
in the realm of academics as he brought the school forward with his untiring
zeal and ability The youths of Singapore had much to thank him for as he
equipped them with the necessary skills for earning a living, raising Raffles
Institution to a flourishing establishment. His term of service marked the
turning point for the school as it began to rise to its place as the beacon for
educational growth.

2003 was definitely an eventful year for
all Bayleyeans. Bayleyeans pressed on
and tried their very best, clinching the
overall second position for house
standing.

We performed well in the aesthetics
arena, clinching first positions for many
events, such as Computer Science
Challenge, Webpage Design, Science
Challenge and Debates. The mass
participation we received played an
integral role in our success. Due to the Sars outbreak, the major aesthetics event of the
year, Drama Feste, was scaled down to an Inter-House Script Writing Competition,
which we won with the script entitled "Colours".

In the sporting field, the house has seen many forthcoming Bayleyeans rendering their
support for the house, especially among the lower secondary. Although the annual
Swimming Carnival, one of the major highlights of the Bayley Calender for the past
three years, was cancelled due to Sars, we still managed to finished relatively strongly
in the rest of the sporting competition due to the mass support and participation from
the members of the house, enabling us to attain respectable positions for Track and
Field, Cross-Country and NAPFA.

Although we achieved second place this year, it is perhaps very encouraging to know
that even right till the end, many amongst us rose to the challenge and fought all the
way.

F.S. Fitzgerald once said," Vitality shows in not only the ability to persist but the ability
to start over." We believe that many of the Bayleyeans this year truly epitomize this
quote. As we close another successful year, the Exco 2002/2003 would like to send there
thanks to all the participants of the house events once again, whose efforts have made
what Bayley house is today, and here's an ending quote from us:

There's a light shining bright
And we'll add to its splendor

Bayley House Executive Committee 2003

Dr. Robert Morrison has often been described as the co-founder of the
Institution. He shared Raffles' view on his obligations to the local people,
was involved in the drawing up of blueprints for the Institution. In order to
help set up the Institution, Dr. Morrison proposed to sell the Anglo-Chinese
College which he set up in Malacca earlier and give the proceeds to the new
Institution. These are just a few examples of how Dr. Morrison helped to set
up the building and his dedication to the Institution even after Raffles'
departure from Singapore.

The year 2003 proved to be a mixed blessing for us. We did well in many events but
were not so fortunate in others. We started the year fairly well, winning the Inter-House
Maths Quiz, and later the Humanities Quiz and were placed second in the Inter-House
Science Challenge. For the past few years, we had not been doing too well in the
academics but this year we seemed to dominate in the various disciplines. We continued
this trend in the Track and Field Championship and came in second, an improvement
from last year's fourth. For the House Carnivals, we came in first in C Division Soccer,
B Division Squash and did well in Hockey and continued to maintain our lead in House
Carnival II as well. However, towards the middle of the year we faltered, with the
various annual events being rescheduled due to Sars affecting us indirectly. We also
suffered a reversal at the cross-country and came in second despite hoping to repeat last
year's performance by winning the championship again. Our fortune continued to
decline as we approached the end of the year. Many games were rescheduled and many
Morrisonians had to be away for School competitions and therefore could not compete
for the House. In Debates we were placed fifth, although ironically, some of the best
speakers of the School are from our House. The same story was repeated in the Inter-
House Webpage Design Competition in spite of the fact that many Morrisonians are
prominent members of the various multi-media clubs. Finally the NAPFA dealt a fatal
blow to us, as it had been doing for a number of years and we were relegated from our
prominent position. Yet we took our defeat philosophically, for we are not afraid of the
future. We look forward to it. We look forward to 2004 when once again we will be able
to demonstrate our true might in various competitions.

J. H. Moor became the first head of Raffles Institution, then known as
Singapore Institution. Under his guidance, the Institution made steady
progress to quadruple its then student population of 50 to 200. A fairly large
library was also established, which was to be the beginning of the National
library. Moor gave the best years of his life to the pioneer work of the
Institution, handling several aspects of the running of the school fulfilling his
duties with zeal and industry.

Moor House Motto: Redoutable et Fougueux
Formidable and Fiery

Error! Bookmark not defined.XError! Bookmark not defined. - the theme of Moor House
for the year 2003. The inverse of the word Moor to form the word Room is a mirror of
our true capabilities: a reflection of the talents and potential of this spirited red house.
In the centre is the 'X' variable, signifying the adaptability of each and every Moorian
to excel in every sphere. As we immersed ourselves in the plentiful activities in the past
year, the Rafflesian Houses witnessed Moorians exemplifying the above qualities.

This year, Moor House explored new frontiers by introducing new perspectives into
the house system. "New" in that the House had undergone changes in many directions
- a "new" way of competing in the Cheering Competition through a Ketchup Dance,
"new" cheers like the Shake the Room!, "new" initiatives such as MOORCIP and more.
As "new" ideas came rolling in, Moorians gradually conquered greater heights.

Moor House achieved a mixed set of results for her competitions this year, coming in
an overall fourth position.

In the sporting arena, Moor House witnessed her members putting their best foot
forward for the House in the House Carnivals and sports events. As a result, we
had excellent standings in Basketball, Track & Field and Cross Country. The House
also had commendable efforts in the aesthetics competitions. Moor House had
attained several outstanding performances in events such as the Inter-House Chess
Tournament, Humanities Quiz, Mathematics Quiz and Drama Feste (Scriptwriting).

At the beginning of the year, freshmen were integrated into Moor House at the Red
Convention. Through a series of icebreakers and station activities, the Secondary Ones
had been introduced to the Moor House spirit - a fiery and formidable passion for the
House. Indeed, Moor House is privileged to receive such an enthusiastic batch of'
members this year.

MOORCIP was organized in our bid to promote community service as part of the house
culture. Not forgetting the less privileged in the community, the House Committee sold
hand-made roses during Valentine's Day, and artistic talents from the House had a part in
busking at Orchard Road. Through these efforts, we managed to raise over $1,000 for the
Interact Club's MCS Project "Ride of Love.- Hearts and MINDS".

Moor House had gone through an exciting roller coaster ride the past year. In a year of ups
and downs, Moorians stood together, never lost their faith and went all out for the House.
Our thanks goes out to all Moorians out there for their support, especially Ms Grace Chong,
Mrs Jasmine Chong and the House Committee for the undying spirit to drive the House.
There is no doubt that under the leadership of the new Committee of 2003/04, Moor
House will never cease to be fiery and formidable.

Redoubiable et Fourgeax.

Buckley
Buckley was a true friend of the school, serving it as a trustee from 1883 to
1990 and acting as the secretary to the Board of Trustees from 1883 to 1888.
He is credited with financing The Rafflesian, even bearing the entire cost of
the publication. Buckley was devoted to the welfare of the students of the
Institution, making several contributions such as introducing football to the
students.

Unos Spiritus Forte

'Oooohi' and'Ahhhhf, the trademarks of the Little Green Men from Toy Story, the House
theme for Buckley for 2003. Their unity and brotherhood was the emphasis for the house
and similar to how their lives revolved around the Unimind, the life of a Buckleyean in RI
revolves around his House, as he strives to achieve glory for his house in both the sporting
and aesthetics arena. Though we fought valiantly and fiercely, brushing aside the onslaught
from the other houses, we were forced to face a new enemy — SARS.

Led by our mascots - The Little Green Men, our out-worldly ambitions were cruelly
brought down to earth by Sars as our pet events, Swimming Carnival and Drama Feste,
were cancelled. Despite being dealt such big blows, Buckley strived on to explore the
unchartered grounds of other events in search of success, and success was what we
achieved in the events of House Carnival, sweeping the gold medals in most of the events.

However, the rugged terrain of the other events such as the annual Track and Field
Championships proved to be too difficult to overcome, leaving the bitter taste of defeat in
our mouths. At other times, such as the Cross Country Championships held at Mac Ritchie
Reservoir, although the Buckley spirit burned brightly in all Buckleyeans, Lady Luck
decided that it was not to be our day as we attained 5th place in the Cross Country
championships.

In the academic quizzes, the intellectual Buckleyeans gave their best and attained
respectable positions, proving once again that Buckleyeans are not only fearsome warriors
in the sporting arenas but also within the boundaries of intellectual pursuits.

As year 2003 comes to an end, we should reflect upon the valuable lessons learnt from
victory and defeat, and as we look forward to the leadership of the exco for 2003/2004,
we wish them all the best as they strive to bring back the House Championship to its
rightful owners — Buckley.

As the double-headed gryphon of Buckley soars high in the sky, cheered on by the little
green men, let our motto echo in our hearts as we walk down the corridors of this great
institution .—

school routine again.

On the 14th of March, pupils from the five houses gathered
for the first major Inter-House event of 2003: the 117th
Annual Track and Field Championships. A ceremonial kick
started the events of the day, with various finals of certain
events carried out amidst the air of excitement and roaring
cheers of the pupils, teachers and guests. Tense rivalry
between the Houses brought out much House Spirit, which
was well reflected in the Best Cheering House and Best-
decorated Stand competitions, of which Moor and Buckley
won respectively. But the day went to Hullett House, as they
successfully defended their title of Overall Champion House
for the fifth consecutive year. It was a memorable day, not
so much because of the trophies or medals, but because of
the fun and laughter, and the strong showing of the Rafflesian
Spirit shared by all.

On 7th August 2003, the annual Inter-
House Cross-Country 2003 was held
at MacRitchie Reservoir Park.
Rafflesians gathered for the final dash
to the finish line in the Inter-House
Championships. The participants ran
their hearts out in the 4.8km in their
attempts to garner as many points
possible for their house. The Indian
Cultural Club sold snacks and drinks
to the thirsty runners as part of their
fund-raising project. In the end,
Hullett emerged Champions for the
Cross-Country Championships. The
top 25 runners in each division were
awarded prizes. However, everyone
still felt a sense of achievement after
completing the tiring and arduous
course through the forest.

Prometheum Day was held on 18th August 2003. This annual
ceremony marked the transfer of leadership from the outgoing
Secondary 4 pupil leaders to the new Secondary 3 leaders.
The responsibility of leading the school to greater heights
was laid on the shoulders of the new batch of pupil leaders
through this annual ceremony. The outgoing leaders received
plaques in recognition of their services rendered to the school,
while the new leaders were handed symbols of the various
CCAs to symbolize the passing over of the leadership.

The highlight of the event was the long-awaited
announcement of the Head Prefect and Deputy Head Prefect
of 2003/2004. Bertram Ang and Kwok Jialun were succeeded
by Sergius Wat and Senthilkumaran s/o Sabapathy
respectively.

Prometheum Day signified the end of a year of leadership
by the Secondary 4s, but it also meant that a new breath of
life would be injected into Raffles Institution, hopefully one
that would allow the school to continue its tradition of
excellence.

This year's Teachers' Day Celebrations
were held on 29th August 2003.
Instead of the usual exercise routine
of the ACES day workout like in past
years, the students of the school this
year participated in a range of physical
activities that varied across the levels.
The Secondary 4s were treated to 4
types of sports including Floorball and
Soccer as the classes battled it out for
top spots in each while the Secondary
3s participated in a biathlon this year
with the activity being held in the
pool and the perimeter of the school.
As always, the individual classes had
their own parties to kick back and
enjoy after the morning's activities.
In conclusion, it was a fun-filled and
meaningful day.

This year, the National Day Celebrations was held on the
8th of August 2003. The festive mood was evident as the
school gathered in the Albert Hong Hall. The celebration
was kick-started with the playing of a video showing
Singapore's progress from a tiny sleepy island to a bustling
city. Interviews with our Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew were
also included in the video which helped us gained valuable
insight into the growth of our nation.
Following that, Mr. Jai Singh was invited to share his thoughts
and views on how he felt when Singapore became
independent after separation from Malaysia. Various musical
and cultural groups put up sterling performances with the
RIMB playing their medley of National Day songs and the
Chinese Drama Circle putting up a short skit. The finale was
certainly dazzling as pupils swayed with their light sticks in
sync with the final rendition of "Home" onstage.
A stunning conclusion to the National Day Celebrations, a
massive red sphere was passed on, to symbolize the harmony,
unity, and peace that will be passed on for the generations
to come.

The Community Involvement Programme (CIP) continued
to be an integral part of the Rafflesian way of life in 2003.
This is in line with the school's goal of developing pupil
leadership with a golden heart of service. Spearheaded by
the Interact Club, the programme focuses on whole school
involvement and the school's commitment to MINDS as its
community partner.

In line with the Community Partnership signed in 2000, RI
continued to carry out service projects involving the
Movement for the Intellectually Disabled, Singapore
(MINDS). The Interact Club's Major Community Service
(MCS) project in 2003 was the RI-MINDS Sports Carnival
and Funfair on 7 June 2003. The 350 MINDS participants
thoroughly enjoyed themselves in an afternoon where they
competed in various telematches, soccer competitions as
well as the various mini-games set up at the fun-fair. The
whole Rafflesian family was involved in this project with the
Sec 1s buddying the MINDS participants, the Sec 4s setting
up the stalls at the funfair, the RPA providing food and ice-
cream for the MINDS participants and other CCA groups
performing at Busking @ Orchard to raise funds for the event.
$35,000 raised by the entire school population during the
2003 ORA Walk-a-Jogathon was also presented to MINDS
during the opening ceremony of the event.

Besides the RI-MINDS Sports Carnival and Funfair, the other
levels also played their part in supporting MINDS as the
school's community partner. The Sec 3 Express pupils adopted
Tampines Home, MINDS as its beneficiary for the various
class and mentorship projects of regular home visits and
fund-raisers. Among the projects was the Special Olympics
in which 20 Secondary 3 pupils paired with the MINDS
schools for a soccer tournament, a food drive for Tampines
Home, MINDS and various fund raising efforts such as the
SAFRA Radio Charity Car Wash. The Sec 2 pupils raised
funds for MINDS by carrying out a newspaper collection in
Toa Payoh and Bishan on 24 October 2003. The Sec 1 GEP
pupils visited Towner Gardens School, MINDS and specially
organized a mini-carnival for 40 pupils from the school at
Sentosa during their Sec 1 GEP camp.

It was unfortunate that the SARS outbreak in March and
April led to the cancellation of several CIP projects. The
Interact Club's International Understanding project was an
exhibition held at the school atrium in May to raise
consciousness about the war in Iraq and the SARS outbreak
in various parts of the world. More importantly, the exhibition
helped to garner support for the fund raising project by the
Red Cross for the Courage Fund. Notes of well-wishes from
Rafflesians to the medical staff and SARS patients were also
sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Besides the various major service projects that the school
had undertaken this year, the Interact Club also continued
its on-going service projects. T h e RI-BP Mentoring
Programme at Daqiao and Guangyang Primary Schools
continued to involve both Interactors and volunteers making
weekly visits to their assigned school as big brothers to the
younger pupils. In recognition for RI's efforts since 1999, we
were awarded the BP-RCI Leader Mentoring Institution
Award and inducted into the Singapore National Mentoring
Network. In addition, 4 Secondary 4 pupils were given the
Outstanding Character Award by BP and another 24 pupils
were given the Chairman Mentor Award for their efforts in
the programme. The SPHERE project, a partnership between
RI, Singapore Pools and HDB continued in 2003. Our pupils
continued making weekly visits to Toa Payoh Care Corner
and Toa Payoh CareLink. We also organized a karaoke
competition and other tours for the residents there.

The Graduation Ceremony for the Senior
Class of 2003 was held on 18th Oct 2003,
in the Albert Hong Hall.

As the senior class of 2003 shuffled into the
-'ball for the very last official ceremony of

their lives in Raffles Institution, a realization
swept across the hall that four years had
passed and that their journey was nearly
over.

T h e students, parents and staff were treated
to a video, a compilation of trials overcome
and moments shared, that brought to mind
what had been achieved in four short years.
The students then went on stage one by one
to receive their graduation certificates from
their Form Teachers to the applause of the
rest of the hall. The outgoing Head and
Deputy Head Boys, Bertram. Ang and Kwok
Jialun, presented to the school, on behalf of
the batch, a replica of a school crest for the
boarding complex. The ceremony reached
its climatic ending when the batch stood,
arms interlocked, to sing the batch song
H a n d in Hand, offered a hearty rendition
of the Institution Anthem and finished with
a loud cheer.

When the official ceremony ended, the boys
rushed to get photos taken with family, friends
and teachers, and in everyone's hearts was
both the acknowledgement that the batch
had indeed left their mark on the school and
that they are the hope for a better age.

2003 was a very fruitful year for the Raffles Players, as they
staged a doublebill entitled "Double Trouble" in July featuring
"Us and Them" by David Campton and "Visitors to Kenny
Hill" by Usman Awang. "Double Trouble" featured not only
the Raffles Players, but students from other schools and our
very own Ms. Jacqueline Sim as well.

The board also gave much support to the Interact Club throughout the

which we are proud of.

is where student leadership is brought to the fore, with the members managing
most aspects of the concert, in consultation with teachers.

Though the band has turned symphonic, the discipline and the musical standards
remain. The RIMB is a musical group that believes that winning is not the most
important thing. What is more important is the entertainment we give to the public
and the audience, and the spirit that each and everyone of the band members has.
We strive for the best in whatever we do and we are a closely-knit family where
everyone matters. With strong support from the school, we aim take our music to
greater heights and bring glory to Raffles Institution.

National Cadet Corps

The first vestiges of the Raffles Institution National Cadet Corps can be found in
an organization formed by Mr. C. M. Phillips, who was Headmaster of RI, in the
year 1901. Formed on 15th May 1901, it was the first uniformed group in the
country. By 1905, it comprised local volunteers and its main objective was to train
locals to form an army.

In 1917, its purpose had changed and its aim then was to improve the physique
and discipline of its members and to inspire patriotism within their hearts. However,
in 1925, it suffered a major setback as a great decline in interest in the Cadet Corps
was observed. RI restarted the cadet corps in 1926, and among the distinguished
crop of students that have been produced by RINCC, Yusof bin Ishak stands out
among the rest. He was the first student to be commissioned as a second lieutenant
in Singapore and went on to become the first President of Singapore.

The Cadets who have passed through the portals of RINCC have always excelled
not only in the Corps but also in everything they do. Producing President Scholars
regularly year after year, the Cadets outclasses their competitors in every aspect.

The strong emphasis on the seven core values of N C C in our weekly trainings has
also been an imperative element of the Cadet's development. Among these seven,
are that of loyalty to country, uprightness, leadership, discipline, commitment and
responsibility, care for fellow cadets and to have an adventurous spirit. With these
principles, RINCC and its cadets has always done the Corps proud.

The unit celebrates its 102nd birthday this year by continuing with its continuous
streak of Gold Unit Awards, broken only once by a Silver in 2000, with CSM
Gerald Lui obtaining the prestigious "Most Outstanding Cadet Award" in the Best
Unit Competition.

01 Raffles Scouts Group

Teachers in charge: The formation of the 32nd Singapore Scout Troop in Raffles Institution took place
Mdm Masayu Mahmud on Bras Basah grounds in 1934, and in that very same year the Scout Troop, known
Ms Stefanie Tan as 32nd Raffles, was awarded the District South Master's Shield.
Mr Sithuraj Ponraj
With Singapore gaining independence in 1965, the major administrative changes
Committee: in the scout movement locally saw a common national uniform replace the old grey

Pioneering Competition in 2001. With such a tradition of excellence of nurturing
boy scouts into men able to contribute to the society, such as Senior Minister Lee
Kuan Yew, 01 Raffles Scouts Group will have no problem in rewriting records and
establishing new heights in Scouting.

02 Raffles Scouts Group

The Scouting movement in Singapore was established in after it was introduced Teachers-in-Charge
by Mr. Frank Cooper Sands. On the 8th February that year 02 Raffles Scout Group Mr David Court
was founded as the 2nd Singapore Scout Troop, and till date, it is the oldest surviving Mrs Ng Hoon Hoon
Troop in Singapore. Ms Justina Tan

The response to Scouting in Raffles was so positive that the 16th Singapore Scout Committee:
Troop, now known as the RI01 Scout Group, had to be formed in 1934. this was Terence Szetoh (Chairman)
still not enough to cope with the demand, however, and RI had to have 6 Scout Joseph Ling (Vice-Chairman)

Cricket Cricket in Raffles Institution began with The Raffles Cricket Club in 1878, making
cricket the oldest sport to be played in Raffles Institution. The club arranged
Teachers-in-charge: matches with other clubs regularly. It also oversaw the establishment of other
Mr Edward De Cruz outdoor activities and held the first ever athletic meet in RI. The sport was played
Mr Chandru Mirpuri by almost all Rafflesians, and the sport was taught and played as the most popular
Mr, Goh Swee Heng (Coach) sport in RI for many a year before and after the 1900s.

Committee: In the 1960s, however, the sport experienced a loss of interest and thus ceased to
Siddharth Dev (Captain) exist. It was, however, brought back to the school in 1993 by Mr. Eugene Wijeysingha.
Amey Anil Chitre (Vice Captain) Since then, Cricket has once again moved to the forefront of sport in Raffles
Girider Swaminathan (Secretary) Institution, winning 7 national titles. Raffles is always among the top names on the
Chan Kin Yip (Treasurer) school cricket-playing scene.

Achievements: Cricket as a sport has a tremendous heritage in the school, and its members strive

Rugby

As the first sport ever played in Raffles, it is rich tradition and resolute spirit that
sets Raffles Rugby apart. Rugby has been played for over a century in Raffles
Institution, and the sport has become entrenched in the traditions of the school.
From the triple Grand Slam, winning the National 15's for all three levels, in 1982,
1983 and 1984, to the drought of national titles almost 2 decades later, we have
played with pride and passion, through the greatest glories and the most stinging
defeats.

The Singapore Cricket Club started the sport in 1887, and its teams comprised
mainly of Rafflesians. For close to 70 years, rugby was played only on an intra-
school basis, until 1954, when our first competitive teams took part in two main
tournaments, the Singapore Cricket Club 7-a-side and National 15-a-side.

In 1969, our senior team won the 7's, 15's, and the Kiwi Cup, achieving a Grand
Slam. 6 years later, in 1975, we once again reasserted our status as the premier
rugby school with a Grand Slam, achieving victory at all three levels in the national
15's.

With the formation of Raffles Junior College in 1982, the teams became separated
into the secondary and junior college levels. RJC continued the success of Raffles
teams, contributing to the triple Gram Slam between 1982-1984, and claiming the
S C C 7's, National 15's, and National 10's in 1990.

However, success at that level has eluded us of late, having failed to win the C and
B division titles in recent years. Nevertheless, the team continues to train and
compete fervently in hopes of bringing success back to the school. Raffles Rugby
has had a long and illustrious history, and it will indeed be a challenge to bring
back the glory of the past and meet the promise of the future.

We take to the field in the same colours as those before us, and we play in the same
spirit - for the love of the game, and for Raffles.

Science Club

Teachers-in-Charge: The Science Club evolved from its predecessor Science Competition Training Team
Mr Mark Wee in 1990, in recognition of the multi-faceted contributions from its student members.
Mrs Yau Pooi Har
Dr Jeffrey Lee The Club believes in presenting science in a form that enriches and which is to be
enjoyed. Thus it organizes an annual science challenge for primary schools as a
Committee: platform for nurturing interest among young boys and girls, as well as a gamut of

Kok Yee Onn (Vice-Chairman) these projects, the student members develop a repertoire of organizational and
leadership skills.
