O Allah! You are Peace and from You is Peace. Blessed are You,
O Possessor of Majesty and Honour! (Help us) By Your Mercy! O
Most Merciful of the Merciful!

* Please note – It is Makrooh to make long du‘aas
and lengthy recitations between the Fardh and Sunnat
Salah. These should be read once the whole Salah has
been completed. So after Dhuhr, Maghrib and ‘Isha one
should make a brief du‘aa and keep other recitations
short, otherwise the reward of the Sunnat Salah will be
reduced. [Radd–ul–Muhtaar, Vol 2, p300 and Bahaar–
e–Shari‘at, Part 3, p81]

Indeed there has come to you a Messenger from among you –
your falling into hardship aggrieves him, most concerned for
your well-being, for the believers most compassionate, most
merciful. Then if they turn their faces away, then say,
“Sufficient for me is Allah, there is no god except Him, I have
relied upon Him, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.”

Allah - there is no god except Him; He is Alive (eternally, on His
own) and the Upholder (keeps others established); He never
feels drowsy nor does He sleep; to Him belongs all whatever is
in the heavens and all whatever is in the earth; who is he that
can intercede with Him except by His command? Knowing what
is in front of them and what is behind them; and they do not
achieve anything of His knowledge except what He wills; His
Throne (of Sovereignty) encompasses the heavens and the
earth; and it is not difficult for Him to guard them; and He is
the Supreme, the Greatest.

Alif-Laam-Meem. (Letters of the Arabic language; Allah and

seeing, and keep the prayer established, and spend in Our
cause from what We have provided them. And those who
believe in this which has been sent down upon you, O Beloved

of the Hereafter. It is they who are on guidance from their
Lord; and they are the successful.

past, present and future – send this reward to all of
their souls. Especially to our near and far friends and
relatives, save them from the punishment of the grave,
resurrection and hellfire. Grant them the intercession of

ease of all our difficulties. Cure us from external and
internal illnesses. O Allah! Protect us from the evil of
Shaytaan and evil of wrongdoers. Protect us from the
evil of ourselves and evil of this world. O Allah! Remove
us from the doors of others and keep us upright at Your
door. O Allah! Whichever friends are present and
absent, make each and every one fulfil their purpose
and reach their goals.

O Allah! Have mercy upon the community of the
Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Rectify the
community of the Prophet. Grant expansion to the

THE CODE OF SHARI‘AT

1. HAVING FAITH UPON AUTHENTIC BELIEFS
(‘AQA’ID): Under the guidance of the Ulama of Truth –
in accordance with the Book of Allah and Sunnat and
traditions of the Blessed Sahaba (may Allah be pleased
with them) – one must correct and validate his beliefs.
This is the belief pillar of Shari‘at.

2. BEING FAMILIAR WITH THE RULINGS OF
ISLAMIC LAW (FIQH): It is not possible to act upon
the Shari‘at without learning about the things which are
Faraa’idh (obligatory), Waajibaat (necessary), Sunan
(Prophetic tradition), Mustahabbaat (recommended),
Halaal (lawful), Haraam (unlawful), Makroohaat
(offensive) and Mushtabahaat (doubtful). This is the
principle pillar of Shari‘at.

3. ACTING UPON THE RULINGS OF SHARI‘AT: In
accordance with the Ulama of Truth of Ahl as–Sunnat
wa’l Jama‘at and with one of the Madh–habs of the
Imams of Fiqh it is compulsory to act upon the Shari‘at
with full adherence. This is the action pillar of Shari‘at.

4. PURIFICATION OF THE SELF (TAZKIYAT–UN–
NAFS): Under the guidance of the blessed Sufis and
honourable Friends of Allah, the purification of the self
and cleaning of the spiritual heart must be performed.
This is the superior pillar of Shari‘at.

QUALITIES OF A PEER–O–MURSHID (SPIRITUAL
GUIDE)

The most important quality of a Peer–o–Murshid, i.e.
Spiritual Guide, is that he fully adheres to the Shari‘at–
e–Muhammadi (may Allah bless him and give him
peace) and that he is a man of Tareeqat. That is, he
must have sworn allegiance (bay‘at) within a Silsila–e–
Tareeqat (Spiritual Order). He must be fully authorised
to initiate others for bay‘at.

1. He must have correct beliefs of Ahl as–Sunnat wa’l
Jama‘at.

2. He must not be completely ignorant and must know
the principle rulings of Shari‘at and Fiqh.

3. He must be pious and morally upright. He cannot be
a wrongdoer and corrupt.

4. His tree of Spiritual lineage must be authentic and
reach the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give
him peace).

Hazrat Daata Ganj Bakhsh ‘Ali Hujweri (mercy be upon
him) said that the greatest miracle of a Friend of Allah
is that he does not act in opposition to the Sunnat of
the Chosen Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him
peace). The recognition of a Friend of Allah is that by
looking at his face one remembers Allah Most High.

69

QUALITIES OF A MUREED–O–SAALIK (SPIRITUAL
SEEKER)

A seeker who follows a path upon swearing allegiance
into a Spiritual Order – whether it is Naqshbandi,
Chishti, Suhrawardi, Qaadiri or another – must have
belief and love for all Spiritual Orders and their
shayookh. He must not disrespect any other shaykh.

A seeker must have utmost respect for his own Peer
(Spiritual Guide and Leader). He must follow any daily
recitation (wazeefa) and various dhikr taught by his
Murshid with full adherence. He must believe that the
benefit and purification of his heart can only be
performed by his Murshid and not by any other shaykh
of his time.

Good dreams and any problems or bad thoughts in
one’s heart, spiritual and other matters relating to daily
recitations should be discussed with one’s Peer. If one
swore allegiance by mistake to a Peer who goes against
Shari‘at, or he was an upright Peer before but now has
deviated from Shari‘at and Tareeqat, or the seeker did
not manage to purify himself before his Peer passed
away – then he can become a follower of another Peer.

If one’s fellow seeking brothers or sisters have better
benefit in the daily recitation, practice and knowledge
of the Murshid’s ways then one must not envy them.

Performing dhikr and daily recitations and having the
Shaykh’s attention will create superior states within the

70

heart. One may start seeing good dreams and
spirituality will increase. One must discuss these
matters with one’s Murshid. Revealing these things to
others can cause one to lose this wealth.

The seeker must strive to fulfil the promises he made
at the time of swearing allegiance to his Shaykh. He
must safeguard himself against wrong actions and if he
does commit them then he must do tawba (repent)
immediately.

One must not find others’ faults or think bad of them
but one must look at his own faults and correct himself.
One should serve guests, travellers, poor people,
scholars of Truth, Faqeers and Friends of Allah. Keep
thanking Allah Most High for his favours and not deny
his favours. Until reaching his grave (i.e. death) he
must seek knowledge which is beneficial and must
perform good deeds.

In accordance with all the books of Tareeqat, the
seeker must become motionless like a dead person is in
the hands of the one who performs ghusl (i.e. washes
the body). Therefore if instead of being affectionate the
Murshid rectifies the Mureed by strictness, anger and
rebuking then the Mureed should bear it and not find it
disagreeable.

The best struggle for a seeker is to have patience upon
the orders of the Shari‘at. He should avoid forbidden
and doubtful things and keep in the company of pious
people.
