Over 15 Years of Miracles

Since 2003, The Refuge – A Healing Place has served as the
nation’s leader in comprehensive and effective treatment for
clients who struggle with the lasting effects of trauma and
PTSD. Renowned for our exceptional staff, serene campus, and
effective therapies, The Refuge has helped thousands of clients
find true healing and lifelong recovery from substance use
disorders, eating disorders, process addictions, depression, self-
harm, and other mental health disorders. The Refuge offers a
unique treatment option, as we are dually licensed to treat both
primary mental health concerns and addictions. This allows us
to work with clients who are actively using drugs or alcohol,
or those who have achieved sobriety, but are still suffering the
effects of unresolved trauma. This also allows us to work with
those who have never struggled with substance use, but instead
have used other maladaptive coping patterns.

“Until my stay at The Refuge, I felt lost. I believed I was damaged,
abnormal, and beyond help. The Refuge taught me that my identity is not
my trauma. They taught me how to move through the real-world without
having my traumas take over the present. They were able to help me put
in to words all the things I could never wrap my head around, and my life
is now getting back on track.”

Symbol of Beauty, Dignity,
and Perseverance

~

A century-old magnolia tree, which has
been honored as one of Florida’s oldest,

stands among the lush vegetation
of The Refuge’s serene campus. This
beautiful tree serves as a symbol of
how nature weathers even the toughest
storms. This icon is a beacon of hope to
all who come to The Refuge, as every
client learns to persevere through life’s
most difficult challenges and becomes

stronger because of them.

The Refuge Difference

Unraveling the Trauma Story
The Refuge offers a truly client-centered approach to treatment
that includes a variety of therapeutic modalities and interventions
that treat the whole person instead of focusing solely on their
symptoms. We believe that when viewed within the context of
a client’s trauma history, their behaviors, no matter how severe
or unorthodox, are understandable.
The Refuge’s primary objective is to treat the root cause of the
symptoms and behaviors, which ultimately accelerates treatment
progress and creates a foundation for long-lasting recovery.

“I’ve never known such peace. Until the root of my despair and confusion
surrounding my trauma was treated, I kept repeating the same patterns
in my life, which resulted in the same despair and confusion over and
over again. The Refuge offered a loving, gentle process that gave me the
courage to discover and embrace the whole truth of my life. I’ve been
given a new life. Truly miraculous! I’m forever grateful to the staff and
the process.”

The Refuge Difference

Understanding the Addiction/Mental Health Story

It is not uncommon for people who have endured trauma to struggle with depression, anxiety, or substance use as a means of coping
with their distress. Recognizing the connection between these challenges, The Refuge offers comprehensive care for many co-occurring
concerns, including:

• Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) • Sex addiction

• Grief and loss • Love addiction

• Depression • Process addictions

• Anxiety • Drug and alcohol addiction

• Self-harm • Eating disorders

Creating the Recovery Story
The Refuge believes that in order for clients to find true healing, we must address the person as a whole. Our client-centered, individualized
approach addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each person. We offer a variety of evidence-based, holistic, and experiential
therapeutic modalities, which allow clients to identify and resolve the ‘soul wounds’ that are driving these negative behaviors. We understand
that each client is different; therefore, the path to healing will be different for each person. Therapists take into account each client’s needs,
abilities, preferences, and values, and tailor a treatment plan specifically for them.

Some of these therapeutic modalities include:

• Cognitive behavioral therapy • Equine therapy • Life skills
• Mindfulness
• Dialectical behavior therapy • Expressive art therapy • Yoga
• Breathwork
• Narrative exposure therapy • Adventure therapy

• EMDR • Relapse prevention

Treatment Modalities and Approaches

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients understand how their thoughts affect their behaviors.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) teaches clients beneficial skills for managing their emotions.

Narrative exposure therapy helps clients develop a coherent autobiographical story that redefines the memory of the traumatic episode so
that it can be better understood.

Specialty therapeutic groups allow clients to discuss specific topics that are relevant to their healing journey. These topics include:

• Grief and loss • Relapse prevention • Eating disorders

• DBT and self-soothing • Sex and love addictions • LGBTQIA

12-Step meetings provide additional support for clients who are struggling with addiction. Meetings are offered both on campus and within
the community. These include:

• Alcoholics Anonymous • Adult Children of Alcoholics • Eating Disorders Anonymous

• Narcotics Anonymous • Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous

A Healing Place

Location
Set on 96 acres and surrounded by the Ocala National Forest, our campus is an integral part of the healing process. The wooded acres lie
alongside a small river, surrounded by a nature preserve and covered with live oak trees draped with Spanish moss. Our serene campus
provides external tranquility that promotes inner peace throughout the healing journey.
Lodging
The Refuge combines the feeling of being in nature with the comfort of upscale amenities. Clients reside in newly renovated cabins,
outfitted with full-sized beds, dressers, a refrigerator, and a safe. All cabins have screened-in porches so that clients can enjoy the beauty
of the outdoors from the comfort of their cabins.

Levels of Care

The Refuge offers three levels of care, including medical
detoxification, residential treatment, and a partial hospitalization
program, with housing, to support clients as they move through
their treatment journey. Our program’s amenities may vary based
on the level of care.
Medical Detoxification: As part of the superior care provided,
The Refuge offers an on-site, 12-bed, full medical detoxification
program for men and women over the age of 18. Specially trained
addiction physicians and nurses oversee every aspect of this
program and facilitate individualized treatment for those who are
working to recover from addictions to alcohol, heroin, morphine,
oxycodone, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or other types of
drugs. The length of stay for a client in this program averages
between 7 and 10 days. However, it can be adjusted based on
an individual’s needs.
Residential Treatment (RTC): The Refuge also offers a 75-bed
residential and partial hospitalization program. In the residential
program, clients are expected to engage in a minimum of six
hours of clinical programming each day. Clinical programming
is focused on regulating the central nervous system, learning
relapse prevention skills, reducing addiction or trauma triggers,
and intervening on maladaptive coping skills that prevent the
client from functioning safely in their home environment.
Clients at a residential level of care may engage in off-property

experiences with staff supervision and are encouraged to attend
self-help meetings. They are also asked to engage in activities
that increase healthy coping and recovery skills.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): The partial hospitalization
program at The Refuge takes place on the same campus as
the detoxification and residential programs. However, this is a
stand-alone program that has unique treatment options and
separate housing from the RTC program. At this level of care,
clients are allowed additional freedoms for engagement in the
community and off-property experiences. Clients in PHP are
required to attend six hours of clinical programs daily. Clinical
programming focuses on exploring the layers of trauma and
addiction that continue to present barriers to independent
functioning. These clients may engage in off-property experiences
without staff supervision and are responsible for administering
their own medications.

Family Week

Families can be a powerful source of support for individuals in
treatment. For this reason, The Refuge offers a four-day family
program. In this program, families learn about trauma, addiction,
generational pain, and unhealthy relationship dynamics. The
goal of this week is to open the lines of communication for
clients and their support systems. This allows families to have
difficult conversations while also feeling support and guidance
from our clinical team.
The family program occurs every six weeks and includes
the following:

• Psychoeducational presentations
• Experiential groups
• Individual therapy sessions
• Family therapy sessions
• Large group sessions

This is my last day up at The Refuge in family week, and I need to say I
feel like I have my daughter back. The work that she has done up here is
outstanding! The Refuge is such a beautiful place to unravel the trauma
and find your authentic self! A shout out to all of the staff there that have
such unconditional love for their job, and allow the process to be...and
share space with us all. Thank you!

Alumni Program: Refugees

The Refuge offers an extensive alumni program for clients.
Lovingly called “Refugees,” any person who has stepped foot
on our campus as a client is part of our tribe. We firmly believe
that this tribe of people, the ones who clients were in treatment
with, the ones who came before them, and the ones who will
come after them, are an important part of keeping our alumni
sober and grounded. Alumni coordinators connect Refugees with
other alumni in their area, as well as reach out post-discharge
at varying intervals throughout their first year out of treatment.
In addition, the program facilitates a secret Facebook group to
provide support and hosts local and regional alumni gatherings.
The Annual Refuge Alumni Weekend draws alumni from around
the world and across 15 years to connect, share, and strengthen
their support networks.
