23 24 DON BOSCO AND THE FULFILMENT OF HIS DREAM John Melchior Bosco was born into a family of poor farmer on August 16, 1815 at Becchi, a hamlet near Turin, Italy. He was orphaned of his father at the tender age of two. His mother Margaret, took on the task of bringing up her three children with love, discipline and great courage. A mysterious dream at the age of nine left an indelible stamp on his life. John saw in the dream a divine commission to work for poor and abandoned urchins. The long years that followed were filled with an amazing enthusiasm to make that dream come true, which was not without its share of humiliation and hardship. In order to pursue his dream he began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest in 1841 and took as his counselor Don Joseph Cafasso a teacher with a very down to earth spiritually. On his advice, young Bosco explored human misery through the by-lanes and market places of Turin and was deeply disturbed. Everywhere he looked he saw young people-unemployed, sadness roving the streets, available for even hazardous works. His visit to the prison disturbed him even more. He made up his mind, “At all costs, I must stop, boys from ending up here.” From then on he began a relentless search through factories, markets, taverns and piazzas for boys in need of food, shelter and education. On 8th December, 1841, his meeting with a street urchin Bartholomew Garelli, marked the beginning of his mission. Soon Bartholomew Garelli with his other friends began to frequent Don Bosco's oratory (club), and accepted him as their father and guide. Some even expressed their desire to become like him. And so, the Salesian Society comprising of priests and lay brothers was born. (The word Salesian is taken from the name of Don Bosco's patron - St. Francis de Sales. Asaint who from an angry young man became a kind and gentle bishop). As his work acquired recognition and spread beyond the confines of Italy, Don Bosco felt inspired to begin new There shall be showers of blessing, Oh , that today they might fall, Now as to God we’re confessing, Now as on Jesus we call ! 13. LORD WE PRAY FOR Lord we pray for (name); give him/her your grace. Let your blessings come on him/her and brighten up his/her days. Make him/her truly worthy of the love he/she receives. Reassure h i s / h e r t r o u b l e d h e a r t ; c o n fi r m his/her belief. Bless him/her dear Lord [Bless him/her dear Lord] (2) Hear the prayer we make for our brother/sister , Do bless him/her dear Lord. 14. IN MOMENTS LIKE THESE In moments like these I sing out a song I sing out a love song to Jesus In moments like these I lift up my hands I lift up my hands to the Lord Singing I love You, Lord Singing I love You, Lord Singing I love You, Lord I love You
25 26 Initiatives in order to embrace many more young people. He founded the society of the 'The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians' to extend his educational services to girls as well. The Union of Salesian Co-operators was the third order he established which consisted of lay people who serve youth while still being members of their families. In the early hours of January 31,1888, Don Bosco breathed his last. Yet undoubtedly, the greatest gift he has left posterity, is his unique way of educating. A method that was inspired by his one magnificent obsession: “It's enough to know that you are young and abandoned forme to love you”. More than a century after the death of Don Bosco, thousands of people have dedicated themselves to the continuation of his apostolic love for young people all over the world. As members of the three orders that form the Salesian Family they profess to be “signs and bearers of God's love to the young”. The Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) today number around 17,000 working in 130 nations in the world. In India alone, the Salesians number over 2300, working in 306 institutions. With Fr. George Tomatis as leader, the first group of Salesians came to India in 1906 and first established themselves in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The first hundred years of Salesian presence in India (1906-2006) have indeed been a saga of love and service for the young. In 1928, four Salesians, were sent to Bombay to take charge of a diocesan school at Tardeo. Thus the Salesian presence was planted in Mumbai. In 1972, Mumbai became an independent province bifurcated from the Madras province. th On 4 April, 1946 another Salesian, Fr. Vincent Scuderi was sent to Goa to begin work in Panjim. He established the Salesian presence by starting an oratory there. From then on began a host of activities for the young which spread to every corner of the State. The growth of the mission in the region gave rise to new presences along the Konkan belt. th On 7 October, 1999, the multifaceted developments gave birth to a new Konkan delegation (comprising of Goa and neighboring districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka). In the year 2004, a full fledged ViceProvince was formed under the leadership of Fr. Loddy Pires, the first Superior of the Konkan Vice-Province, bifurcated from the mother province- Mumbai. Gratitude is due in abundant measure to the Salesians, who with their exemplary lives and generous service brought Don Bosco to Goa. It's with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that we say 'THANKS' to God for all that has been. It has allowed us to a good measure to look forward to greater possibilities, to consolidate our gains and strive for higher strides, thus keeping the quest for excellence and quality of our mission ever renewed following the footsteps of our founder, St. John Bosco. SALESIANS OF DON BOSCO (SDB) We, the Salesians of Don Bosco, are an international organization, a religious order of men, priests and brothers living in a community and consecrated by vows as “signs and bearers of God's love for youth, especially the poorest.” Wherever we work, 'Youth Resource Development' through education and evangelization is the focus of all our concern - because we believe that our total dedication to the young is our best gift to humanity. Founded by St. John Bosco in 1859, we are in 128 different nations. OUR WORKS 1. Oratories and Youth Centres 2. Schools and professional formation 3. Boarding and hostels arrangements 4. Institutes of Higher education 5. Parishes 6. Social services and works for youth-at-risk 7. Social communication 8. Other new forms of Salesian presence to the young
OUR STYLE . Don Bosco passed on to his salesians a unique style of living and working, an original blend of life and action which we call the Salesian spirit. CHARACTERISTICS OF SALESIAN SPIRIT . · A special concern for the welfare of young people wherever we are · Loving kindness and welcoming attitude · Optimism and joy · Work and temperance · Acceptance of daily routine with cheerfulness · Creativity and flexibility · A realistic perspective on life · Our educative method “the preventive system” · Deep trust in God DON BOSCO'S EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM Education will always be the number one concern of the world. However, the more closely related to human nature an educational system is, the better are its chances of succeeding. Don Bosco's educational philosophy has its roots sunk simultaneously in humanity and in God's revelation to mankind. It is an education which responds to youth's innate desire “to know and to grow”. We call it Salesian Education. It is a philosophy of education founded upon the charism, teachings and experience of Don Bosco. The objective of the Salesian Education is the well integrated growth of the young person. It has its roots firmly fixed in Don Bosco's Preventive System. 27 28 PREVENTIVE SYSTEM The “Preventive system” of education is experience-based, rather than theory based. It is the fruit of Don Bosco's life-long apostolate among young people mostly poor and underprivileged a commitment undertaken with a warm, optimistic and joyful approach to youth, whom he always called “society's greatest hope”. In Don Bosco's own words: “The preventive system” is based entirely on REASON, RELIGION and LOVING KINDNESS. It excludes all violent punishment and tries to do without even the slightest chastisement.” Don Bosco identified these three mutually dependent and tightly interwoven factors in good education. REASON: The term “reason” emphasizes Christian humanism, the value of the individual, of conscience, of human nature, of his culture and social living. It implies an over-all good sense of judgment, reasonableness in making demands or punishing, an “understanding” attitude engendered by personal concern and wholesome psychology. RELIGION: “Religion” indicates that Don Bosco's pedagogy is essentially transcendent, in so far as the ultimate educational objective at which it aims is the formation of the believer. For him the properly formed and mature person is a citizen with sound faith and noble principles. Don Bosco insisted that its eminently human values transcend the limits of denominational religion. KINDNESS: “Loving Kindness” is expressed in the commitment of the educator as a person entirely dedicated to the good of his pupils, present in their midst, ready to accept sacrifices and work hard in the fulfillment of his mission. It means simple acts of thoughtfulness, personal concern for the pupil's growth in self-identity and self esteem, a rapport supportive of a pupil's efforts to know and to grow. Without doubt, KINDNESS is Don Bosco's chief contribution to modern education. Good education is based on personal concern for the individual's worth and that, without love, education can be very sterile and mechanical, a very dull and dreary job.

I set clear, achievable goals and tackled them each day without succumbing to distractions. Even amidst academic commitments, I made time for sports and cultural activities to stay positive and balanced. The journey was demanding, but the sense of fulfilment upon achieving my expectations was unparalleled. I took up reading not only my textbooks but various reference books that helped me gain more knowledge. Consistency, discipline, and a curious mindset helped pave the path to my success. Time management was a challenge yet a disciplined scheduled helped me stay focused and helped in managing, my time efficiently. I would like to place on record the support of my teachers at Don Bosco and own dear family who believed in my abilities and have helped unleash my potential. I could achieve this feat of topping only due to my focus, dedication and consistency throughout the Academic Year. A Big Thank you to My Family, father Principal and Teachers for their constant motivation and guidance. This could not have been possible without my teachers who were always available to solve my queries. Success is the ultimate thing we require in any work that we do in our life and it can be achieved only through hard work and determination. I thank God for blessing me with wisdom and knowledge. I would also like to thank my parents and my teachers for inspiring me to believe in myself and never give up on my dreams "We should not teach the students the sciences but give them a taste for them."To excel academically, one must have a deep interest and desire for their chosen field. Teachers and coaching institutes can provide a taste, but true excellence lies in the student's hands. Self-discipline, strong ambition, and a well-structured timetable are crucial. Physical fitness is equally important. Surround yourself with motivated peers who support your aspirations. Respect and appreciate your teachers and family as they are your lifelong support system. Lastly, learn from mistakes and stay humble to achieve true success. With the invaluable guidance from my teachers and unwavering support from friends and family, I maintained a positive mindset, surmounted challenges, and achieved remarkable results.
