LYFE LYFE WEDNESDAY | JAN 3, 2024 23 Shaping culture INSTAGRAM is anticipating that the importance of authenticity will continue to grow in 2024. The social network has revealed its major trends for the year, highlighting the habits and interests of Generation Z (Gen Z). In the spotlight is a focus on more sustainable fashion, meaningful connections on social networks and a willingness to take responsibility for themselves and to educate others on important issues. In collaboration with the world’s leading consumer trend forecaster (WGSN), the 2024 Instagram Trend Talk survey gathered data from members of Gen Z in various countries, including the US, UK, Brazil, India and South Korea, to explore their interests and preferences in a variety of areas. Beauty gets more sustainable and individualised When it comes to fashion and beauty, Gen Z is moving towards more sustainable choices, with a tendency to buy fewer new clothes, reuse existing outfits and favour local shopping. Fashion trends for 2024 include modest dressing, an interest in vintage items and the adoption of a more “unexpected” and personal style of dress. A third of the Gen Z participants surveyed said they wanted to be more creative in the way they dressed. In the realm of beauty, the focus is on individual expression, with particular attention paid to new hairstyles and the discovery of signature fragrances. A quarter of the Gen Z respondents surveyed plan to “express themselves by discovering a signature” fragrance in 2024. More meaningful connections When it comes to social networks, young people intend to prioritise meaningful connections, using social media to maintain contact with those around them and keep up to date with the latest trends. Interactions on Instagram, such as sharing stories or sending reels or memes in direct messages (DMs), play a key role in connecting with others. When it comes to love, members of Gen Z will focus more on personal development and deepening their current relationships. 63% of the respondents said they were single. Swapping Instagram handles instead of phone numbers is becoming a common practice in social interactions, with 28% of participants having already taken the first step in this way. Among the techniques used to flirt on Instagram, young people prefer to like their crush’s story, add them to their list of close friends to share more personal stories or put them in a photo in a story or photo dump. A better version of one’s self In terms of lifestyle Gen Z plans to focus on self-improvement and personal development, envisioning 2024 as a year of personal growth. Their priorities include staying healthy, exploring different career paths and travelling. As far as what they plan to eat, there is a growing interest in vegan and plantbased products, with almost half of those surveyed interested in experimenting with these dietary alternatives. When it comes to celebrities and activism, a large proportion of Gen Z identify themselves as belonging to various fan communities, with these fandoms mainly themed around television, music and video games. Young people also plan to become actively involved in causes close to their hearts, notably through education, voting and using social networks to raise awareness of various issues. These trends create a portrait of Gen Z, concerned with sustainability, authentic relationships and self-expression, actively shaping global culture through their choices and habits on platforms like Instagram.- ETX STUDIO Gen Z will be looking to create new and improved versions of themselves in 2024. The 40-year-old Ferrari actor shared the challenges of life with a second child, revealing that his daughter is now eight months old. Driver admitted that raising a baby can be demanding, especially as he navigates the dynamics of having both an eightmonth-old daughter and a sixyear-old son. When asked about sleep, Driver confessed to getting “not a lot” but highlighted a shift in perspective. He acknowledged that with his son, he was eager for developmental milestones, whereas, with his daughter, he is practising patience and savouring the moments more. Driver humorously noted that this time around, his daughter likes him more, in contrast to his son, who initially wanted nothing to do with him for the first three years. Driver announced he was becoming a dad for a second time during a SNL dress rehearsal. – PIC BY MARIA MORATTI/GETTY █ BY YASMIN ZULRAEZ Journey to the stars oSandler takes galactic leap into sci-fi drama TAKING on a compelling role in Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi drama, Spaceman, where Adam Sandler, the 57-year-old comedian, plays Jakub, an astronaut grappling to salvage his marriage on Earth from the distant reaches of the solar system. The synopsis reveals that, six months into a solitary research mission at the solar system’s edge, Jakub realises his marriage to Lenka █ BY YASMIN ZULRAEZ Siblings on and offscreen MIRANDA Cosgrove recently opened up about two aspects of her life she has yet to explore, getting drunk and smoking. Speaking on the Good Guys podcast, co-hosted by her former Nickelodeon colleague Josh Peck, the iCarly star revealed that she has never been intoxicated and has abstained from smoking. Cosgrove shared that she has never even been buzzed, attributing this choice partly to her inclination toward being the designated driver among her friends. While Cosgrove has not consumed alcohol to the point of intoxication, she admitted to trying an edible brownie once, leading to a 17-hour nap. She explained that her role as the designated driver influenced her decisions and became a habit she stuck with over the years. Despite her current choices, she expressed an openness to eventually trying alcohol. Cosgrove and Peck, who portrayed siblings on Nickelodeon’s Drake and Josh, have maintained a close relationship. They reunited for the Paramount+ iCarly revival, with Peck playing the role of Paul, a talent manager guiding Cosgrove’s character, Carly Shay, in her influencer journey. Reflecting on their long-standing friendship, Cosgrove praised Peck’s comedic talents and spontaneity, emphasising their enduring connection since their early days on Drake and Josh. The actress considers Peck one of the best people in her life, expressing gratitude for their continued friendship. In a separate podcast appearance on Cancelled with Tana Mongeau, Peck delved into his past struggles with fame, family issues and the pressures of showbiz. He revealed that, at 17, he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with inner turmoil, thinking it would bring relief. Acknowledging his naive perspective at the time, he discussed wanting to make up for lost teenage experiences while navigating his burgeoning career. Peck’s candid admission shed light on the challenges he faced during his teenage years in the entertainment industry, highlighting the complexities of fame and the coping mechanisms individuals may resort to in the face of personal struggles. Sandler in Netflix’s Spaceman (2024). – COURTESY OF NETFLIX █ BY YASMIN ZULRAEZ (Carey Mulligan) may not endure his return to Earth. Desperate to mend the relationship, Jakub encounters a mysterious creature named Hanus, voiced by Paul Dano, who assists him in unravelling the complexities of what went wrong. In the teaser video, Sandler’s character is seen in a spacesuit, navigating through water and trees, sharing a poignant voiceover about his intergalactic journey and the discovery of the enigmatic creature. Directed by Johan Renck and based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s 2017 book Spaceman of Bohemia, the film also features Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin and Isabella Rossellini. Kalfar shared that Spaceman originated as a short story, envisioning an American astronaut receiving a divorce request while stranded in orbit. Co-produced by Channing Tatum and an executive-produced team including Renck, the film marks a departure from Sandler’s typical comedic roles, reminiscent of his acclaimed performance in 2019’s Uncut Gems. Renck expressed his desire for a distinct Sandler performance, emphasising the actor’s intelligence and depth beyond his comedic persona. Sandler’s previous Netflix venture, Hustle, earned him a SAG Award nomination last year. Mulligan, described as “incredible” by Renck, brings technical skills and tremendous authenticity to her role as Lenka. Renck commended Mulligan’s significant contribution to the film, portraying the complexities of her character with extraordinary skill. Dano, chosen for the voice of Hanus, was lauded for his unique cadence and careful formulation of words, perfectly fitting the character. The director emphasised Dano’s contribution to creating a distinctive voice for the mysterious creature. Spaceman is set to premiere on Netflix on March 1, promising audiences a captivating blend of science fiction, drama and stellar performances from a talented cast. As Sandler ventures into this thought-provoking role, viewers can anticipate a departure from the familiar and a glimpse into the actor’s multifaceted talent. In that monologue, Driver playfully remarked on his priorities, stating, “I’m a husband and a father. It’s in that order, though. The 75-year-old actor, joined by CBS’ Gayle King, returned to the New York City hotspot for the first time since that memorable movie moment. In the 1989 rom-com, Meg Ryan’s character fakes an orgasm at Katz’s Deli, creating a scene that remains etched in cinematic history. The table where Harry and Sally sat is still marked with a sign reading, “Where Harry Met Sally. Hope you have what she had”. referencing the famous quote from the film. King playfully invoked the line when placing her order at the deli counter and Crystal expressed awe at being part of “a little piece of history in New York City”. Crystal emphasised the enduring relevance of When Harry Met Sally, noting its timeless portrayal of love and relationships. He highlighted how new generations continue to discover the film, keeping its spirit alive. Even Ryan, during Crystal’s recognition at the 46th Kennedy Centre Honours, playfully credited him for making the iconic scene feel natural. President Joe Biden also praised Crystal during the honours, commending him for his comedic prowess and humanitarian efforts. Reflecting on Crystal’s journey from sweeping a music shop floor to becoming a celebrated comedian and actor, Biden lauded the comedian’s heart, emphasising his commitment to philanthropy, including cancer awareness, aiding post 9/11 and superstorm Sandy recovery and addressing homelessness. In a touching moment, Ryan acknowledged Crystal’s impact on her and humorously thanked him for making the fake orgasm scene effortless. She also praised Crystal’s wife, Janice, highlighting how falling in love with him has been an easy feat for over 50 years. As Katz’s Delicatessen continues to embody the legacy of that iconic movie moment, Crystal’s return sparks reflections on the enduring magic of When Harry Met Sally and his significant contributions to both comedy and humanity. – BY YASMIN ZULRAEZ Crystal and King seen here sitting at the Harry and Sally table from the movie. – PIC BY CBS Symone mourns the loss of brother Blaize to colon cancer. – PIC BY KEVIN WINTER/GETTY RENOWNED for his acclaimed portrayal of Dr Niles Crane on the original NBC sitcom Frasier, David Hyde Pierce has clarified that he has no intentions of reprising the beloved character in the new Frasier revival. Despite earning four Emmy Awards for his distinctive and comedic take on the role, Pierce shared his decision in an interview, emphasising that he “never really wanted to go back.” The 64-year-old actor, currently starring in HBO Max’s Julia as Paul Child, Julia Child’s husband, elaborated on his choice during the interview. He expressed his love for every moment of the original Frasier but underscored his desire to explore other opportunities. Pierce had recently embarked on the Julia television show and was involved in musical projects, leading him to believe that committing to a reboot might hinder his ability to engage in diverse projects. Reflecting on the reboot discussions, Pierce acknowledged the evolution of Frasier into a new era with fresh characters. He believed that the show had successfully moved on and no longer required his character, stating, “They don’t actually need me.” He commended the new additions to the cast, affirming that the series is thriving with its current lineup. Pierce previously touched on his experiences during the original Frasier in a 2022 interview. He discussed the complexities of that period, particularly in the mids of the AIDS crisis. The Paramount+ Frasier reboot, arriving nearly 30 years after the 1993 series debut, features Kelsey Grammer reprising his role as Dr Frasier Crane. The storyline revolves around Crane’s return to Boston to be closer to his grown-up son Freddy. Notably, many original cast members, including John Mahoney, who portrayed Frasier’s father Martin, are not part of the reboot. However, familiar faces like Bebe Neuwirth and Peri Gilpin have made guest appearances in the new season, contributing to the show’s nostalgic charm. Despite Pierce’s decision not to return, the Frasier reboot continues to captivate audiences with its blend of classic characters and fresh additions. SHOBA T 03 7784 8888 F 03 7784 4424 McGregor all set for return UFC LEGEND Conor McGregor (pix) has confirmed his longawaited return to the octagon will come in 2024 in an impromtu video posted on his social media. The man known as “Notorious” revealed that his next opponent will be Michael Chandler on June 29 in Las Vegas. The Irishman last competed back in 2021 against Dustin Poirier, when he was defeated by technical knockout after doctors had to step in following a major injury. The 35-year-old MMA icon appeared to roll his ankle in the first round of the UFC 264 contest and it later transpired that he had broken his leg. He had feared that his career at the top was over but after a long rehabilitation period, he is now ready to make a blockbuster return to action. McGregor took to Twitter/X to post a clip in which he made the stunning revelation that he would face Chandler during International Fight Week. The Irishman wished his fans a ‘Happy New Year’ and appeared to be in good spirits as he looked forward to 2024. His anticipation for his return to the UFC was obvious as well as he teased his upcoming bout as “the greatest comeback of all time”. He said: “I’d like to announce the return date for myself… The greatest comeback of all time will take place in Las Vegas, International Fight Week of June 29. The opponent, Michael Chandler – and the weight, Mr. Chandler, 185 pounds.” Chandler could hardly hide his excitement ahead of their summer clash in Nevada as he took to social media to issue a response to the Irishman’s revelation. He told his Twitter/ X followers: “I always said I wanted you at your biggest, your baddest and your best. 185 would look good on me.” – Express Newspapers

Ow Pee Juan Liquidator Date this 3rd day of January, 2024 322 Notices 322 Notices 322 Notices Looking for a silver lining Hamilton desperate to improve morale at Mercedes after dismal 2023 LEWIS HAMILTON says he is often in the Mercedes factory rallying the troops after staff were left “demoralised” following the 2023 season. Hamilton and the Silver Arrows suffered a tough campaign last time out, with neither the seven-time world champion nor George Russell able to properly challenge Max Verstappen and Red Bull. Mercedes’ inconsistency left Hamilton and Russell frustrated throughout last year. The team have been unable to match Red Bull since fresh aerodynamics r e g u l a t i o n s w e r e introduced at the start of 2022. H a m i l t o n has spent the offseason boosting the morale of those inside the Mercedes factory as they work on the W15. The Briton has pointed out that the team now have something to work towards after the absence of a “north star” over the last two years. “I’m in the factory much more often now, have meetings with all the department heads and try to motivate and encourage them all,” Hamilton, who remains in pursuit of a record eighth world championship, said. “As you can imagine, everyone is disappointed and demoralised after last season. So I talk to them, show them where we need to improve and what direction we need to go in. “I just try to help them be positive and to say we can do it. I also looked closely at the other vehicles and asked a lot of questions, just to stimulate ideas. “Ultimately, I have to let them do their job. At the beginning of the season we didn’t have a north star to guide our development. We kind of ran in zig-zags to find out in which direction the journey should go. “Every now and then we came across something positive and thought: ‘That’s it!’ But then it quickly goes in the other direction, which is normal. The objective always changes.” Hamilton finished third in the drivers’ championship last season, coming behind Verstappen and his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez. Russell, who finished a lowly eighth, said it was his “toughest” season in Formula One. Mercedes surprisingly parted ways with chief technical officer Mike Elliott in October. Elliott had been a mainstay with the British-based team, spending 11 years at their headquarters in Brackley. Neither Hamilton nor Russell blamed Mercedes’ struggles on Elliott, but the change was deemed necessary by team bosses. At the time, Toto Wolff hinted that the 49-year-old needed a break from the stress of two tough seasons. “Mike has been one of the pillars of the team’s achievements over the past decade,” said Wolff. “And it’s with truly mixed feelings that we say goodbye to him today. “Mike is a fiercely intelligent technical brain and a great teamplayer; he has made a strong contribution not just to winning racing cars but also to building the culture of our team. “But on the other side, it’s clear that he’s ready for new adventures beyond Mercedes, so I know this is the right step for him to take.” – E x p r e s s Newspapers Australia out for Pakistan sweep in Warner Week AUSTRALIA will go for the tried and tested as they look to sweep Pakistan in their three-match series and send veteran opener David Warner out a winner at his home ground in his final Test this week. Pat Cummins confirmed yesterday that the same team that won the first Test in Perth by 360 runs and the second in Melbourne by 79 runs would take the field for the final clash at Sydney Cricket Ground today. The Australia captain said that Warner, who has sometimes divided opinion even in his own country, fully deserved to end his Test career on his own terms in his 112th match in the longest format. “Warner Week has started,” Cummins told reporters. “I think he’s our greatest three-form player. “Three formats over a decade, two 50-over World Cups, one T20 World Cup and in all those campaigns he was front and centre and a big reason for it. Playing more than 100 Tests puts him in an elite category in all three formats. “Every time he walks out there, he’s competitive, ready to go, so just a champion of Australian sport and hopefully he gets a good send off this week.” Pakistan captain Shan Masood has a different set of problems to contemplate as he looks to motivate a team that was mauled in the opener and failed to exploit their opportunities to level the series in the second Test. Shan has already made it clear that he is a skipper who looks more on the positives and felt the fact that Pakistan had been competitive at times in Melbourne augured well. While joining in the tributes to Warner, Shan said the tourists would be happy to play party poopers. “It’s a big occasion for him and the Australian cricket team but our job is to get David Warner out early,” he said. “But we wish him all the best with this Test match and what’s to come forward for him as well.” – Reuters DEAN ELGAR will bid to bring the curtain down on his Test career by skippering South Africa to victory in the second and final Test against an India side who are likely to make at least two changes. The tourists hopes of achieving their first ever series success in South Africa were comprehensively dashed as they lost the first Test by an innings-and-32 runs last week. South Africa will be revved up to give Elgar a victorious farewell. The 36-year-old will captain the side – standing in for the injured Temba Bavuma – and is in fine fettle having scored a majestic 185 in the first Test. India look set to revamp their bowling attack. Left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is expected to return in place of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Jadeja suffered a back spasm before play on the first day of the first Test. Jadeja will add depth to India’s batting, which crumbled in Centurion, as well as being a capable bowler. India are also likely to make at least one more change to their bowling line-up. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj maintained reasonable control in Centurion but lacked support from all-rounder Shardul Thakur and newcomer Prasidh Krishna. At least one of Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan is in line to play at Newlands. Avesh was added to the squad after impressive performances in India’s one-day series win which preceded the Test matches, which he followed with a five-wicket haul for India A against South Africa A last week. With the exception of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, India’s batsmen looked ill-equipped to deal with South Africa’s all-pace attack. Captain Rohit Sharma continued to struggle in South African conditions, being dismissed twice by Kagiso Rabada for five and nought. In five Tests in South Africa, Rohit has only scored 128 runs at an average of 12.80, compared to an overall Test average of 45.45. – AFP Elgar bids to bow out on winning note Warner appeals for return of baggy green AUSTRALIAN opener David Warner has made an impassioned appeal for the return of a rucksack containing his baggy green cap that went missing on a flight from Melbourne to Sydney for his final Test match this week. “This is my last resort, but my backpack, which contained my Baggy Green, has been taken from my luggage, which was transported to Melbourne airport and flown… to Sydney a few days ago,” he said in a post on Instagram. “It’s sentimental to me, it’s something that I would love to have back, in my hands, walking out there come this week. If it’s the backpack that you really wanted, I have a spare one here. You won’t get into trouble, just get in touch with Cricket Australia or me. I’m happy to give this to you if you return my Baggy Green.” The baggy green cap of Australian cricketing great Shane Warne sold for A$1,007,500 (RM3.2m) at an auction in January 2020. Trott to continue as Afghanistan coach FORMER England batter Jonathan Trott has signed a contract extension as Afghanistan head coach following their remarkable World Cup campaign in India. Afghanistan finished sixth of 10 teams at the 50- overs World Cup where they registered upset wins over former winners England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and came close to humbling eventual champions Australia. The 42-year-old, who has signed an extension to the end of the year, also oversaw Afghanistan’s T20 series victory against Pakistan and a oneday series win against Bangladesh in his first stint. “The decision comes in after his successful 18-month tenure, during which he made significant contributions to the team’s progress and development,” the Afghanistan Cricket Board said in a statement yesterday. SPORTS SPORTS WEDNESDAY | JAN 3, 2024 29 Down but not out but not out Nadal roars back with ‘emotional and important’ win over Thiem RAFAEL NADAL won his first match back from a year-long injury layoff when he defeated former US Open champion Dominic Thiem at the Brisbane International yesterday, calling it an “emotional and important day”. The 22-time Grand Slam winner looked in superb touch with a clinical 7-5, 6-1 victory over the Austrian in front of a full house at Pat Rafter Arena. The 37- y e a r - o l d Spaniard has not played singles since a second-round loss at the Australian Open last year, undergoing two rounds of hip surgery. “Today, honestly, is an emotional and important day for me after probably one of the toughest years of my tennis career, without a doubt,” he said. “To have the chance to come back after a year and play in front of an amazing crowd, and play I think at a very positive level for the first day is something that makes us feel proud. “For myself, all the team and my family who have been there every single day during the last year.” The long layoff raised fears that his career could be over, but Nadal said this week he was always determined to make it back for the 2024 season. He conceded before the match there was “a high percentage” that it would be his last season, but left the door open to play on should his body hold up. “I missed being healthy, I missed feeling competitive and to play in front of full crowds like this,” he added courtside after beating Thiem in 89 minutes. “Crowds in Australia all my career have been an amazing support for me. I can’t thank everyone enough.” Former world No. 3 Thiem, who has had injury concerns of his own, came through qualifying to make the main draw and matched Nadal throughout the first set. But at 6-5 and with the set looking certain to go to a tiebreak, Nadal stepped up the pressure on Thiem’s serve, forcing a series of errors and eventually winning the set when a Thiem forehand sailed long. Nadal then seized the advantage, holding his serve to love and then breaking Thiem to take a 2-0 lead in the second set. “I think the first set was very equal, both of us serving well and then I was able to have that break for 6-5,” he said. “I know Dominic has been going through hard times with injuries too, so happy to see him on court, wish him all the very best for the season”. – AFP Djokovic hampered by wrist issue NOVAK DJOKOVIC received treatment for a wrist issue during his United Cup match against Jiri Lehecka yesterday but the world No. 1 battled through for a 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-1 win that drew Serbia level with Czech Republic in the US$10 million (RM46m) mixed team event. Djokovic, who is gearing up for a tilt at a record-extending 11th Australian Open title this month, appeared to be bothered by his right wrist in practice and occasionally grimaced in the opening set at the RAC Arena. The Serb had his wrist worked on by a trainer after the first set and Lehecka sensed an opportunity, winning the second set in a tiebreak. Djokovic took a medical timeout before the start of the third set and came out firing, running up a 5-0 lead before sealing the match. The 36-year-old said after the win that the wrist was sore. “But I managed to play it through and it’s not the first or the last time,” he added. “These things happen. You just have to manage and find a solution. Let’s see what happens now.” Djokovic had been scheduled to play in the deciding mixed doubles with Olga Danilovic but has been replaced by Hamad Medjedovic. Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova had earlier given the Czechs a 1-0 lead by beating Danilovic 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Greece were stunned by Chile in their Group B opener, with Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas losing 6-7(5), 6-3, 10-6 to Daniela Seguel and Tomas Barrios Vera in the mixed doubles decider at Sydney’s Ken Rosewell Arena. Sakkari beat Seguel 6-0, 6-1 in the opener before Chile’s Jarry downed Stefanos Sakellaridis 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to level the tie after the Greeks decided not to field Australian Open runner-up Tsitsipas in the singles. – AFP TOP-SEED Coco Gauff admitted there were “things to improve” as she overcame a mid-match wobble to beat fellow American Claire Liu in straight-sets in the first round of the Auckland Classic yesterday. US Open champion Gauff prevailed 6-4, 6-2 in her first match of the season, while second-seed Elina Svitolina was also made to struggle before outlasting Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 in a battle of the comeback mums. World No. 3 Gauff raced to a 4- 0 lead over Liu, ranked 92 places lower, before the fluidity slipped from her game. She double-faulted twice to drop her serve and the gap narrowed to 5-4 when Liu broke again. But the 19-year-old recovered her composure to take the first set when a loose Liu forehand sailed out. Gauff broke twice more from 3-2 in the second to move into the second-round meeting with 16- year-old Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova. Gauff declared herself satisfied with her performance as she began her build-up to the Australian Open despite four double faults and a first serve at only 65%. “I definitely needed to be tested and I feel like I played well today for my first match in a while,” declared Gauff, who is defending the Auckland title she won 12 months ago. “There’s obviously things I can do to improve but I’m happy with the win,” she said. Svitolina and Wozniacki, who both returned to the circuit last year after maternity leave, battled for one hour 45 minutes before Svitolina triumphed. Former world No. 3 Svitolina won the opening two games before Wozniacki fought back to lead 4-3. But another break enabled the Ukrainian to take the first set 6-4. Svitolina built a 4-1 lead in the second but Wozniacki refused to yield and won the next two games before the Ukrainian stretched away again. “It was really special for me to get such a great win today against Caroline,” said Svitolina, who took a year off to start a family while Wozniacki was away for nearly three years. “She’s a great player and I’m really glad she came back,” added Svitolina, who will face either former US Open champion Emma Raducanu of Britain or Spain’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the second round. – AFP Gauff has ‘things to improve’ after win in Auckland LIVERPOOL and Real Madrid want Paris StGermain striker Kylian Mbappe, who is out of contract at the end of the season. The 25- year-old France international is free to sign for another club this month. PARIS ST-GERMAIN are the leading contenders to sign England midfielder Kalvin Phillips, 27, from Manchester City this month. MANCHESTER UNITED and Liverpool head the queue of clubs who want 28-year-old Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich when his Bayern Munich contract runs out at the end of the season. LIVERPOOL and Tottenham are weighing up summer moves for Wolves’ 27-year-old South Korea forward Hwang Hee-Chan. TOTTENHAM are pushing to complete the signing of Genoa centre-back Radu Dragusin, 21, by the end of the week. WEST HAM have contacted Tottenham about a deal for England defender Eric Dier, who has been out of favour since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival. MANCHESTER CITY are among a host of teams tracking 18-year-old defender Leny Yoro, but Lille want at least £78m. MOROCCO winger Hakim Ziyech, 30, could return to Chelsea this month as Galatasaray are planning to terminate his season-long loan. LIVERPOOL are monitoring Genoa’s Danish midfielder Morten Frendrup, 22, but a January move is unlikely. NOTTINGHAM FOREST have opened talks with Paris St-Germain about re-signing 37- year-old Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the City Ground. NEWCASTLE UNITED want Chelsea’s 19-yearold Brazilian defender Andrey Santos, whose loan at Nottingham Forest is expected to be terminated this month. NEWCASTLE have made contact with representatives of Sporting Lisbon’s 20-yearold Ivory Coast defender Ousmane Diomande regarding a potential summer deal. BURNLEY winger Manuel Benson, 26, is in talks with Hull City after the clubs verbally agreed a loan deal until the end of the season. FULHAM have triggered a one-year contract extension for club captain and Scotland midfielder Tom Cairney, 32, after his impressive recent form. WEST HAM are willing to allow Algeria winger Said Benrahma, 28, to leave the club for around £20m, with Fulham and Lyon interested. CHELSEA have started the process of signing 24-year-old Nice and France defender Jean-Clair Todibo, who is also wanted by Manchester United and Tottenham. ARSENAL could recall Scotland left-back Kieran Tierney, 26, from his loan at Real Sociedad following Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko’s injury. CHELSEA are keen on Germany’s Under-17 World Cup winner David Odogu. The 17- year-old Wolfsburg defender, who has not played a senior game in the Bundesliga, is also interesting Leicester City. FORMER Arsenal striker Carlos Vela, 34, could return to Real Sociedad on a short-term deal. The Mexican also has an offer from Cruz Azul after his contract at Los Angeles FC expired. SPORTS SPORTS WEDNESDAY | JAN 3, 2024 30 EROL BULUT said yesterday’s 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers was the “perfect start” to 2024 for Cardiff City and praised the team’s fighting spirit. The Bluebirds battled to victory in west London thanks to set-piece headers from Dimitrios Goutas and Perry Ng, although Paul Smyth’s leveller did have City fans on tenterhooks for much of the second half. With a number of absentees, Bulut was delighted to see his team kick off the new year with three points, which sees his side move up to ninth in the table and four points away from those playoff places. “It was perfect to have a win for the new year,“ the Bluebirds boss said as per WalesOnline. “The way we won, it was great. “It was not the greatest game playing with the ball, the opponent had more from the ball, but we’ve been good behind the ball. “When I see how many injuries I have now. How many players have a sickness so they are not with us, in the offensive part I have limited possibilities. The team showed fighting spirit, winning spirit, some games are like that. “We train a lot for (set pieces), we make enough goals and I hope we continue like that. “Sometimes, the offensive part of the game don’t score, so then we have to count on our defenders and they are doing it well. “We want our offensive part to create and finalise more, but we have limited possibilities for that.” Goutas looked visibly emotional after scoring the opener and made a gesture with his hands as Cardiff players rallied around him. Explaining the celebration, Bulut said: “His grandmother is not well in Greece. So, maybe the next days will be not good, so that’s why he was in a bad mood. I wish for the family and for his grandmother all the best.” – Agencies Klopp sings Joe’s praises Gomez sets milestone after overcoming adversity J URGEN KLOPP said Joe Gomez had never asked to leave Liverpool and said the club’s longest-serving player is “absolutely at home” at Anfield. Gomez made his 200th Liverpool appearances in yesterday 4-2 win over Newcastle after a time on Merseyside that has been interrupted by serious injuries and spells on the bench. Klopp admitted the defender had a difficult campaign last year and, partly due to injuries, he had only started 25 League games in the three seasons before this one. But the 26-year-old has excelled in three positions so far this season and, in the absence of the injured Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, is Klopp’s first-choice left-back for the next few weeks. But the German said that, even in the tough times, the former Charlton player never wanted a transfer. Aston Villa were interested when former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was their manager but Gomez, a 2015 signing, is now the only survivor of Brendan Rodgers’ team who is in Klopp’s squad. “I think Joe is absolutely at home here so that is No. 1 (reason),” Klopp said. “Joe had the problem of too many injuries in his time here – I’m not sure exactly the number – and the number of games he has had, with the quality he has, has nothing to do with me or Brendan; he was playing quite frequently when I arrived. “Then he was injured. He came back from international duty with the U-21s injured but in our most successful seasons he played centre half next to Virgil (van Dijk), very often, not all the time, but mixed probably with Joel (Matip) and Dejan (Lovren) but he played a lot of games. “He can play all the positions at the back and that is very important. He didn’t have a good year last year but he is absolutely back to his best, or maybe at his best at the moment, because he is still a young man – it is crazy to think that – but he is just for us a super-important player. “He never came to my office and asked, ‘Can I go?’ No, never. It was always sorted before it could get to that point. We sorted a new contract, he wanted to sign and he wanted to stay. “He knows that in his time with his injuries that if you go somewhere and get injured you are just a different player but here he is still our boy and we will deal with it and you have all time to get back and that is a positive as well.” – The Independent Leicester surge 10 clear as Ipswich, Southampton stumble LEICESTER opened up a 10-point lead at the top of the Championship with a 4-1 thrashing of Huddersfield as promotion rivals Ipswich and Southampton failed to get 2024 off to a winning start. Everton loanee Tom Cannon scored twice on his full debut for the Foxes as Leicester stretched their unbeaten run to 10 games. Cannon was signed by Enzo Maresca on deadline day in August despite carrying a back injury that delayed his debut until three weeks ago. The Irishman was keen to make up for lost time as he blasted home the opener five minutes before half-time and then made the points safe with another clinical finish on the hour mark. By that point Ricardo Pereira had already made it 2-0 and Stephy Mavididi’s free-kick rounded off the scoring after Michal Helik had pulled a goal back for Huddersfield. “It hasn’t been easy for Tom, he was two or three months out with the injury,” said Maresca. “Tom’s had to wait for his chance and, yes he scored two goals. But when you don’t play games, and suddenly you get your chance, everyone is expecting big things. “I told him to ‘just go out there, and don’t think it’s your first time and you need to show people, or me, that you’re good. Because if you’re here, we think you’re good enough. Just enjoy it’. Ipswich are now without a win in five games as their push for back-to-back promotions has stalled. Kieran McKenna’s men were unable to make the most of a man advantage for the final half hour after Jordan Thompson was sent off in a 0- 0 draw at Stoke. Southampton missed the chance to close to within a point of the automatic promotion places as their winning streak came to an end in a 1-1 draw at Norwich. Josh Sargent cancelled out Adam Armstrong’s opener for the Saints. Leeds closed the gap on Ipswich to seven points with a comfortable 3-0 win over Birmingham. – AFP Perfect start to new year for Bulut’s Cardiff █ BY RICHARD JOLLY SIDENETTING Bentancur’s return a huge lift for Spurs: Postecoglou TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR manager Ange Postecoglou said Rodrigo Bentancur’s early return from injury had given the club a massive boost after the Uruguay midfielder helped them to a 3-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth on Sunday. Bentancur was expected to be out for at least two months with an ankle injury sustained in Spurs’ 2-1 Premier League defeat by Aston Villa on Nov. 26. However, the 26-year-old returned to training well ahead of schedule and played for just under an hour in Tottenham’s win at the weekend, where he was involved in the build-up to the opening goal. Postecoglou said Bentancur had shown great determination to get through his injury problems after being sidelined for much of 2023 due to a serious knee issue. “Rodrigo trained during the week. He’s a warrior. He wanted to play,” Postecoglou said yester Monday. “I let him train with the team and there was nothing I saw that was going to prohibit him from contributing. “We knew we wouldn’t get more than 55, 60 (minutes) out of him, but it’s a lift for the whole squad because he’s a quality player, and he’s also a quality person. “The group has seen what he’s gone through, and he’s never let it get him down, he works hard every day.” Birmingham sack Rooney after just 15 games BIRMINGHAM CITY have sacked manager Wayne Rooney after just 83 days in charge of the Championship club. The 38-year-old was appointed on Oct 11 following the controversial decision to dismiss John Eustace, with Blues sixth in the table. Since then, the Blues have slipped to 20th, yesterday’s 3-0 loss at Leeds having been Rooney’s ninth defeat in 15 games. The Former England captain previously had spells in charge of Derby County and MLS side DC United. Rooney’s appointment bore comparisons with the club’s ill-fated decision to sack Gary Rowett in December 2016 and replace him with a better globally-known name in Gianfranco Zola. But Zola won just twice in 22 games before being sacked in April 2017, only to be succeeded by Harry Redknapp. Since Blues’ new American owners Shelby Companies Limited appointed Rooney, again in the search for global impact, he has also won just two matches - and the board’s hope for successful, more exciting football has not been met. Blues are six points clear of the relegation places ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup third-round trip to Hull City. Van de Beek joins Frankfurt on loan for rest of season DONNY VAN DE BEEK has joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the season. The Bundesliga club, who will pay United a loan fee and the majority of the midfielder’s wages, have an option to buy him in the summer for €11m (RM55m) plus a further €3m (RM15m) in add-ons. Van de Beek, a £40m (RM200m) signing from Ajax in 2020, has entered into the last 18 months of his contract at Old Trafford and his departure increases the chance he has played his last game for United. The 26-year-old has played 62 times for United but has only started six Premier League games for them and has only appeared for 21 minutes this season, in two substitute appearances against Crystal Palace. SPORTS SPORTS WEDNESDAY | JAN 3, 2024 31 KUFC players’ salary resolved THE salary arrears issue, which has been affecting Kelantan United FC since August has been successfully resolved through a win-win formula involving the club’s management, officers, coaching staff, and players. Its club’s chief exeuctive officer Wan Zul Ikmal Wan Abdul Aziz said that they had previously issued a memo on the salary payment schedule, which was agreed upon by all parties involved. “We (KUFC) have always been committed to clearing all arrears when we started the payment process in mid-December 2023, which covers half of the August salary before the last Super League game. “A day after that game, the club paid September salary to all staff, coaches and players,” he said in a statement yesterday. Wan Zul Ikmal added that according to the agreed schedule, payment for the remaining balance for August was made on Dec 31. “However, due to some unavoidable technical issues, the club management has taken steps to contact players and staff to explain the situation. “Nevertheless, we immediately credited salaries to players and staff who needed the outstanding balance,” he said. He said players or officers who have yet to receive the balance of their August salary will get their payment today (Jan 3). “The three outstanding monthly salaries for October, November and December will be settled on Jan 15 and Jan 31, 2024 which will cover all outstanding salaries for the 2023 season. “The Malaysian Football League (MFL) has been notified of the schedule of the salary arrears payment,” he said. Record-breaking start for Wai Ching NATIONAL tower running ace Soh Wai Ching started 2024 with a bang as he conquered the Qingdao Vertical Marathon in China in recordbreaking style yesterday. Wai Ching ran up the 2,121 steps of the 81-storey tower in a new record time of 12 minutes and 17 seconds (s). The 29-year-old’s effort saw him erase the previous mark for the 331m high tower of 12:45s set by home runner Shi Ai Ai. “Happy with the overall champion position but super happy with the course record as I was aiming to break it. “Thanks everyone for the support. I will keep this spirit going all the way in 2024,“ he said in a statement. Time to get out of my comfort zone, says Aifa NEW YEAR, new resolution, new perspective. National woman squash player Aifa Azman is gearing up for a fresh start this year armed with a resolve to get out of her comfort zone by going for a longer overseas training stint. Aifa expects to undergo a two-month training stint in England in March, where she will have the opportunity to train with some of the world’s top 20 players. “If I have to go somewhere… it’s a bit difficult (the overseas training) because I am a family person and I have study commitments at Universiti Malaya. “If for a week or two it’s okay but being away (before this) for much longer, I would have to think twice or three times. But now, (despite all that) I realise I need to get out of my comfort zone,” she told Bernama. Aifa hopes that a longer overseas training stint and the chance to spar with some topclass players will help her be on par with the world’s top 20 players. “I hope I will get more exposure to compete against them (top 20 players), match their level and, hopefully, get myself in the top 20. That’s my target for this year,” said Aifa, who is currently ranked 24th in the world. Flying start lying start wish Aaron yearns for positive Malaysian Open NATIONAL MEN’S top doubles player, Aaron Chia hopes he and his partner Soh Wooi Yik will open their campaign this season with a flying start at the Malaysian Open 2024 scheduled to take place at the Axiata Arena from Jan. 9 to 14. Without revealing any specific target for the tournament, Aaron is instead determined to put up his best performance in front of home fans at the Super 1000 championship. “So far preparations (Malaysian Open 2024) are all going fine. It is quite important for us to perform well especially in our home ground,” he told reporters after the training session yesterday. Aaron-Wooi Yik’s best achievement at the Malaysian Open was in the 2022 edition when they qualified for the semifinals before losing to Japan’s Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi, 21- 23, 9-21. After often failing to meet the target set in previous tournaments, Aaron finally left it to the fans to set the correct target for the 2022 world champion pair. He said this includes the time frame for them to reach the status of world No. 1 doubles in the future. “I think that (world No. 1) is always our target but the time will come. I want to say a lot but I can’t as people may comment that wanting to be world No. 1 is just talk. “Because when you say you want to reach your target but in the end you can’t, so I really don’t like to talk about this and just play for myself,” he said. For the record, the world No. 4 pair were ranked second in the world earlier last year, which was their best position in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings so far. In the meantime, Aaron hopes that a holiday with his family in Hong Kong before Christmas will make him feel more refreshed for the new season after a busy schedule throughout last year. Aaron-Wooi Yik who are the third seeds will face unseeded Danish pair, Rasmus KjaerFrederik Sogaard in the first round of the Malaysian Open 2024. – Bernama City slickers to spearhead KLHA THE Kuala Lumpur Hockey Association (KLHA) will join the Malaysian Hockey League this season with a team named Kuala Lumpur City (KL City), set up by the association with the cooperation of several agencies, including the Federal Territories Sports Council and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). Its president I. Viknesawaran said KL City is supported by the local community and will field both men’s and women’s teams. “The teams will consist of Kuala Lumpur locals, 21 and below. This is a project with the Federal Territories Sports Council in conjunction with (this year’s) Sukma Games,” he said at a media conference at the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium on Monday, adding that in the long term, they intend to make KL City a club with its own fans and to expand the KL City brand. He also said that the association is planning to organise an indoor hockey league championship this year to breathe new life into the local hockey scene and that it was important as there were quite a number of championships dedicated to indoor hockey, including the South East Asian (SEA) Games and the Sultan Nazrin Shah Cup. “So now we want to introduce the sport more consistently. There have been competitions previously, we had a Malaysian indoor team, we played in indoor tournaments… so we need to have an indoor hockey league in 2024,” he said, adding that it would also give field hockey players the opportunity to improve their skills and performance. Vikneswaran also shared that the 2023 season of the Kuala Lumpur Hockey League that was temporarily halted due to unforeseen circumstances would resume this weekend so that the remaining matches could be finished before the 2024 season begins. – Bernama LESS than two weeks ahead of Palestine’s opening game at the 2023 Asian Cup in Qatar, the team is struggling to focus as war rages on in Gaza, where thousands have been killed. Some players have lost loved ones in Israel’s relentless bombardment of the besieged territory in response to Hamas’s Oct 7 attack on southern Israel. Much of Gaza has been reduced to rubble, including stadiums, in air and artillery strikes and a ground offensive, and football fields have been used as makeshift graves for some of the dead as many cemeteries are either full or inaccessible. “Everyone is glued to the news, before and after training, be it on the bus or at the hotel,” the team’s coach, Makram Daboub, said from Saudi Arabia where the players were training. Qatar hosts the 2023 Asian Cup from Jan 12 to Feb 10, and Palestine will play its opening game on Jan 14 against Iran. The players have “a constant feeling of anxiety for their families”, Daboub, a former Tunisia coach and player, said by telephone. The Palestinian Football Association had celebrated in June last year when the national team won – for the third time – a spot in the Asian cup. But with no end in sight to the Gaza war, the team now feels crushed as they try to prepare for the upcoming competition. “We have physical, technical and tactical problems due to the suspension of the tournament… as well as psychological issues,” said Daboub. Many players are struggling, particularly those like Mahmoud Wadi and Mohammed Saleh who have family trapped in Gaza where their homes have been destroyed, said Daboub. “They are suffering,” he said. Others have relatives who have had to flee relentless Israeli bombardment in the north of the territory and seek safety in the south, “where conditions are difficult”, he added. Daboub said the team hopes to “qualify for the latter stages of the Asian Cup and show the honourable face of Palestinian football”. Salah confident Liverpool can win Premier League MOHAMED SALAH believes Liverpool can win the Premier League after his inspirational display fired the Reds to a crucial yet hard-fought win over Newcastle. Salah recovered from a first-half penalty miss to score twice and set up another as Jurgen Klopp’s side won a New Year’s Day thriller 4-2 at Anfield to move three points clear at the top. It was his final game before joining up with Egypt ahead of the upcoming African Cup of Nations. Salah told Sky Sports: “It’s a great result for us. The game was very intense and we managed to pick up three points and now we are top of the table. We need to stay calm and win every game.” Asked about his side’s title chances, he added: “We believe a lot. We need to work hard and express ourselves on the field. If we manage to do that and work hard then we can keep winning.” Salah was pleased not to be signing off from club duty on a low note after seeing a spot-kick – the first of two he had during the game – beaten away by impressive Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. He said: “I missed the penalty – I didn’t want to leave with national team with that performance. “The first one I was confused because the goalkeeper moved, but the second one I did like I did in training.” Salah opened the scoring with a tap-in early in the second half. That effort was quickly cancelled out by Alexander Isak, but Liverpool took control through Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo. Sven Botman pulled another back, but Salah wrapped up the win the hosts – who racked up 34 shots – deserved after a foul by Dubravka on Diogo Jota. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: “Nobody should be really surprised that Mo can change a game. The more goals you have, the more you are used to missing chances and understand what you have to do to keep going and improving, and that was what Mo did. “It was a super game from start to finish, super high intensity. I loved so many aspects of the game except the goals we conceded. “It was an unbelievable game with and unbelievable atmosphere.” Before the game, Klopp assured fans that Liverpool will deal with the absence of Salah during the Africa Cup of Nations. If Egypt make it all the way to the AFCON final in Abidjan on Feb. 11, Salah will miss four Premier League games, including a trip to Arsenal on Feb 4. Klopp said that the club were aware and had planned for Salah’s departure, saying: “We have solutions.” Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted his side were fortunate to get in goalless at halftime, but he had issues with both spotkicks given against them. “I’m still confused over the penalties we conceded. The second one especially didn’t look like a penalty,” he said. “There are two ways to look at it: the challenge on Sean Longstaff (in the second half) was a pen for me and that changes the game massively and then they go up the other end and it wasn’t (a penalty).” A fifth defeat in six League matches, and one win in 12 away games, has left Newcastle struggling to stay in reach of the top four. “We have to do everything we can to protect that confidence so that is why I think we need not to over dramatise things,” Howe added. “It was a really good performance from Liverpool, they made it very difficult for us – we did well to come in 0-0. “Take away the penalty moments, the goals we conceded were disappointing.” – The Independent Newcastle United’s Sven Botman (left) fouls Liverpool’s Luis Diaz for a penalty to Liverpool during their Premier League match. – AFPPIX -Story on page 31 Flying start wish
