For the Australian all-rounder, though, it was just “great fun”. Maxwell smashed an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls in Mumbai yesterday, single-handedly guiding Australia to an improbable three-wicket win that sealed their spot in the semifinals. “It was great fun. It just felt like it was me and Patty (Pat Cummins) just having fun out there,” he told reporters of the partnership with his captain, having come together at 91 for seven. “We were keeping each other pretty calm with jokes most of the time. “When he first came out, he goes, ‘Don’t worry, they’re four overs down, they’re going to have an extra fielder in for the last four overs’. “We just tried to keep the mood nice and light. Obviously, it wasn’t an ideal situation, but we just tried to relax each other as much as we could.” Australia’s first double-century maker in ODIs, Maxwell also became the first anywhere to reach 200 during an ODI chase. He became the third player to score 200 at a World Cup, following Chris Gayle’s 219 against Zimbabwe in 2015 and Martin Guptill’s 237 not out against West Indies in 2015. Cummins declared Maxwell’s knock “the greatest ODI innings” and plenty agreed, including former England captain Michael Vaughan and Australia’s past master-blaster Adam Gilchrist. Former India all-rounder and cricket analyst Irfan Pathan went a step further, calling it the “best ever white ball inning” on social media. Maxwell’s night looked over when on 147 he slumped to the ground after taking a single. Cramped up in both legs, he also suffered a back spasm while lying down. He elected to plough on and rely mostly on his reflexes and hands to smash anything in the zone. “So that probably made the job a bit more simple,” he said. “It wasn’t all just, like, chaotic swinging but there was a bit of planning to it.” Australia play their last group stage match against Bangladesh in Pune on Saturday. “It’s been a weird, weird couple of weeks… To be in the semifinals is a great feeling. Hopefully we enjoy a few days in Pune,” he said. – Reuters Ankle fine, other parts of leg the issue, says Tiger TIGER WOODS is no longer feeling pain in his surgically repaired right ankle, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to get back on the course. Woods said in an interview yesterday that the other areas of his right leg are still giving him problems, as speculation has swirled around when he will play competitive golf again. “My ankle is fine. Where they fused my ankle, I have absolutely zero issue whatsoever,” Woods, 47, told the Associated Press. “That pain is completely gone. It’s the other areas that have been compensated for.” He faces a similar issue after having fusion surgery on his back which repaired the L5 and S1 vertebrae. “But all the surrounding areas is where I had all my problems and I still do. So you fix one, others have to become more hypermobile to get around it, and it can lead to some issues.” Woods caught golf fans’ attention over the weekend when he caddied for his son Charlie at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship. He was seen walking with no noticeable limp in a video that spread across social media. “I’m pretty sore after caddying for four days,” Woods said yesterday. “It was a flat course, thank God.” Stewart Cink told Golf Channel earlier this month that Woods had begun practicing again. He could choose to enter the Hero World Challenge, the unofficial PGA Tour event benefiting his charity where he is the tournament host, to be played Nov 30-Dec 3. He has also played with his son in the PNC Championship, an exhibition tournament in which major champions play with family members, and could do so again Dec 14-17. – Field Level Media AFGHANISTAN have rebounded from defeat at the World Cup and can do so again, coach Jonathan Trott said after yesterday’s three-wicket loss to Australia in Mumbai. Trott’s side are sixth, trailing New Zealand and Pakistan on net run rate, but still have a shot at reaching the last four. They play second-placed South Africa on Friday. “We lost the New Zealand game pretty heavily and came back and won the next game,” Trott told reporters. “We lost the India game very heavily. Came back and beat England. “There is evidence of us coming back. But yeah, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. It would really be nice just sitting here with 10 points. But hopefully that’s after the South Africa game.” Afghanistan had won only one match in their two previous World Cup campaigns but have already won four of their eight matches in India so far. They were close to another upset victory in Mumbai before Maxwell’s incredible innings, though the Australian all-rounder was dropped twice early in his knock. “He was hitting all. Guys were changing pace, he was hitting that. Spinners were bowling different lengths, he was hitting that,” Trott said of Maxwell. “Sometimes you’ve got to take a cap off to a person the way that he played, but he shouldn’t have been allowed to play like that. We should have had him out earlier.” – Reuters Don’t count Afghanistan out yet: Trott Australia’s Glenn Maxwell plays a shot during the match against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai yesterday. – AFPPIX Maxwell breaks another record as Australia reach World Cup semis The big show

SPORTS SPORTS THURSDAY | NOV 9, 2023 29 NEWCASTLE UNITED waited 20 years to play in the Champions League again and it feels safe to predict that it will not take them two decades to return, but an adventure threatens to end early. A late goal from Julian Brandt sealed a 2-0 home win for Borussia Dortmund over Eddie Howe’s team yesterday, severely denting the English side’s hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout phase. The destroyers of Paris SaintGermain could see their own hopes in ruins. The casualties from the group of death might include Newcastle, and if so, this may go down as a game too far, rendering their task too tough. E d d i e Howe has admitted Newcastle will probably need to beat both Paris St Germain and AC Milan to keep their Champions League dream alive. They will head for Paris later this month having banked just four points from their first four fixtures. Asked if they now needed to return from France with at least a point, Howe said: “Yes. It’s difficult to tell at this stage, but we are probably going to have to win our last two games.” Howe was left to reflect on what might have been after a difficult night at Signal Iduna Park as the team he had fashioned from the remnants of his injury-hit squad failed to live up to his expectations. “Very similar to Dortmund (at home) last month, a frustration on our performance knowing there is more in the tank to give. We’re better than that and can show a better version of ourselves than we did. “I don’t think Dortmund have seen the best Newcastle and that always leaves a feeling of frustration. But we accept it, we’ve delivered it and we have to look to the future now. “The intensity and quality of our usual game was missing. In saying that, we still had our moments and Joelinton’s header is the key moment in the game from our perspective. “It was a really good move and I think he would back himself to score that if the chance came again. But that’s football and that’s one of the things that happens.” For Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic, the victory was the perfect response to Saturday’s bruising 4-0 Bundesliga defeat by Bayern Munich. “We’ve managed to win twice against Newcastle, their only two defeats in 13 matches, every time with a clean sheet. “We are very happy, but we know the seven points we have in the group are not enough to go to the round of 16. We need another few steps.” – AFP/The Independent Martinez, Casemiro set for long layoffs CASEMIRO is set to miss a key stretch of Manchester United’s season after Erik ten Hag revealed the midfielder will be sidelined with a hamstring injury until after Christmas. The 31-year-old midfielder has struggled for form and fitness in his second season since his eye-catching switch to Old Trafford from Real Madrid. Casemiro sustained an ankle injury on Brazil duty last month and returned against Newcastle last Wednesday, only to be taken off at half-time of the 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat. United confirmed the Brazil international had sustained a hamstring issue that would keep him out for “several weeks”, but Ten Hag has now suggested the midfielder may struggle to play again this year. Leftbacks Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia may return in the coming weeks but Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, who is out with a foot injury, are set to miss the 10 matches before Christmas. “I have some time schedules, yeah,” Ten Hag said. “But it’s always difficult to project that because there can always be setbacks during the rehab period. “I’m always a little bit holding back on such issues. I expect some back but, for instance, Casemiro and Martinez are really strong injuries and I don’t expect them back before Christmas.” Ten Hag said: “So, we did all the protocols during and after the game, so he is ready to play. There is not any indication (of concussion). He was fine in the game so no problems. He played a very good game.” – The Independent OLIVIER GIROUD fired AC Milan back into Champions League contention with the decisive goal in yesterday’s 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain. France striker Giroud thumped home a trademark header four minutes after the break at a pulsating San Siro to reignite Milan’s chances of reaching the last 16 and turn around a dreadful recent run of form. Stefano Pioli’s team started the day bottom of Group F but are now well in contention for the knockout stages, third on five points and just one behind PSG who occupy the second qualification spot. Yesterday’s win was revenge for a 3-0 hammering in Paris a fortnight ago and came with Milan’s first goals in the competition this season, the hugely impressive Rafael Leao drawing the hosts level in the 12th minute after former Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar had nodded PSG into an early lead. Giroud’s winner was his seventh goal of the season in all competitions and there was a French flavour to the finish which downed Ligue 1 champions PSG, Theo Hernandez supplying the pinpoint cross from which his Les Bleus teammate netted. “We showed everyone what kind of team Milan are at home,” said Leao to Mediaset after being named man of the match. “I am speechless but so proud of the team, we worked incredibly hard – I am really happy.” Milan next host group leaders Borussia Dortmund, who took top spot by one point from PSG with their 2-0 win over Newcastle United yesterday. – AFP Giroud sinks PSG to reignite Milan’s Champions League bid █ BY SIMON PEACH Arteta doubles down on VAR comments MIKEL ARTETA has stood by his VAR outburst following Arsenal’s loss at Newcastle on Saturday and insists he will continue to “talk loudly” until he believes the situation improves. The Gunners lost 1-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday – their first Premier League defeat of the campaign – as Anthony Gordon scored a controversial winner for the hosts. Speaking after the defeat, Arteta said it was “embarrassing” and a “disgrace” that the goal stood – while Arsenal issued a statement on Sunday in support of their manager’s forthright views. Asked yesterday if he would have done anything differently, the Spaniard replied: “It is my duty to stand in front of you, to stand in front of the cameras, and give a very clear and honest assessment of what happened in the game. “And this is what I did, reflect very openly on how I felt that the team played and how the game was conditioned by this results with the decisions that were made. It is the duty. “My duty is to be defending my players, supporting my players, supporting my club, defending my people in the best possibly way and this is what I am going to time after time. “I do it, not the way I feel, (but) with the evidence and being as clear as possible. And I always do it, when we play real I need to say it, when we have lost, to take my responsibility, the first one is me to do it. It is the way that I am and I have to defend my club.” Arsenal’s statement claimed “yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors” occurred during the loss at Newcastle as the club “wholeheartedly supports” Arteta’s comments, stating players, coaches and supporters “deserve better”. The statement has been criticised in some quarters with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville labelling it “dangerous”. – The Independent Newcastle ewcastle outclassed outclassed Magpies face uphill task to reach knockout stage after frustrating loss in Germany Spanish referee Alejandro Hernandez (left) checks on Newcastle’s goalkeeper Nick Pope after sustaining an injury during the UEFA Champions League Group F match against Borussia Dortmund yesterday. – AFPPIX Olivier Giroud

Atletico tletico destroy 10-man Celtic 0-man Celtic Scottish champions suffer Champions League embarrassment as Los Colchoneros run riot ANTOINE GRIEZMANN and Alvaro Morata struck twice each as Atletico Madrid hammered ragged 10-man Celtic 6-0 yesterday to move top of their Champions League group. Diego Simeone’s side took an early lead through Griezmann but were struggling until Celtic forward Daizen Maeda was dismissed midway through the first half for a high foot. Morata added a second before the break and Atletico racked up the goals in the second half, with both forwards netting again and Samuel Lino and Saul Niguez also on target. Atletico’s emphatic win leaves them with eight points, one ahead of Lazio, second, and two ahead of former group leaders Feyenoord, while Celtic are last with only one. “The team didn’t lower its rhythm of play, they were always looking for more,” a pleased Simeone told Movistar. “It’s a crunch moment for everyone (in the group), it will be tricky until the end.” Goalscorer Griezmann added: “Their red card gave us an advantage, but we have to continue like this. “Respecting our opponent, we tried to play as well as possible and not do silly things like try nutmegs.” Atletico bounced back strongly from a disappointing defeat at La Liga minnows Las Palmas on Friday to leave Brendan Rodgers’ side on the brink of elimination. The game changed drastically when Japanese international Maeda was sent off for a high foot on Mario Hermoso. Although the referee initially gave a yellow card, Maeda was dismissed after VAR intervention – Celtic’s third red card of the competition. Rodgers said the red card was the pivotal moment in the game and one he felt was harsh on his team. “We started the game well and played with confidence and then the sending-off was a big turning point in the game. “It was definitely something I feel was not deserved as both players kicked each other’s feet. “At 11 vs 11 we showed we were competitive but at 11 vs 10 that was an uphill challenge for us. “I don’t like to comment so much on referees but I feel like what he saw on the screen was not representative of the actual challenge. “They gave everything but we couldn’t find any quality or rhythm at all, especially when they scored the second goal.” Celtic captain Callum McGregor added: “It’s hard enough at this level with 11 men. (It was) a humbling experience for us.” – AFP/Agencies ‘Barcelona victory important for Ukrainian football’ SHAKHTAR DONETSK coach Marino Pusic said his side’s shock 1-0 Champions League victory over Barcelona in Hamburg yesterday was “important for Ukrainian football”. Shakhtar have played home games away from their Donbass Arena in Donetsk, now occupied by Russia, since 2014. But playing the match hundreds of miles away in Germany did not prevent Danylo Sikan securing a famous victory over Barcelona with his dipping header in the 40th minute. “Unfortunately, because of the situation in the country, you can call this a home game but for us it is a tremendous part – the travelling, and sometimes we need one or two days extra to recover of course,” said Pusic. “It is not so easy… It is important also for Ukrainian football to represent the country in Europe like we did tonight.” Barcelona still lead Group H ahead of secondplaced Porto, who beat Royal Antwerp 2-0, on headto-head record, but missed the chance to wrap up qualification for the last 16 with two games to spare. “After two years without qualifying for the last 16, today is a missed opportunity,” said Barca coach Xavi Hernandez. Shakhtar, on six points, gave their knock-out stage hopes a boost, but also put themselves in pole position to at least finish third ahead of Antwerp and move into the Europa League. “If we achieve that (last 16), it would be fantastic. If not then to stay in Europe would also be a great achievement, amazing achievement even, for this club under those circumstances,” added Pusic. After failing to progress from the group stage for two seasons running, Barcelona had won their first three matches this term. However Shakhtar held their own from the start. “We do things step by step and we stay humble,” said Pusic, who was proud of his team’s defensive effort. We like to attack and we had several good moments tonight, but game organisation comes first. If you concede easily at this level there is not a high chance you will win.” Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu said his team had to look in the mirror after their disappointing display. “Every defeat is a warning,” he told Movistar. “We have to be self-critical and see what we did wrong, to correct it quickly.” – AFP Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann (right) celebrates scoring his team’s third goal during the Champions League Group E match against Celtic at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid yesterday. – AFPPIX

SPORTS SPORTS THURSDAY | NOV 9, 2023 31 JOHOR DARUL TA’ZIM (JDT) head coach Esteban Solari is extremely proud of his players and describes their 2-1 victory against South Korean giant, Ulsan Hyundai FC, yesterday as sweet revenge. Solari said defeating the 2012 and 2020 ACL champions was a magnificent achievement for the Southern Tigers after facing a difficult match. “When we played in South Korea, we doubted ourselves and we lost 3-1. Today, I am very happy, we defeated the Korean team after making extra efforts. “The team played really well and we now look forward to the next game,” he told reporters at the post-match press conference on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ulsan Hyundai head coach Hong Myung Bo expressed his disappointment as the team failed to secure more goals. “We had some chances (to score). It’s difficult... all the players played their best. What we can do is to prepare for the next match,” he said. Muhammad Akhyar was hailed as the Man-ofthe-Match during the fourth Group I Asian Champions League (ACL) match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. JDT are currently third in Group I with six points, tied with Ulsan Hyundai who are ahead on goal difference. The group is led by Japanese club Kawasaki Frontale with 12 points, while Thai club BG Pathum United sit at the bottom without any points. On Oct 24, the Korean club beat the Southern Tigers 3-1 at the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium in Ulsan, South Korea. – Bernama Don’t concede early! Sabah FC coach Kim Swee warns team to stay alert against Hai Phong S ABAH FC head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee wants his men to stay focused from start to finish when they take on Hai Phong FC of Vietnam in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup Group H match at Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu at 8pm today. Kim Swee said this will ensure they do not repeat the mistakes that led to them conceding two early goals in the previous match against the same opponent. He said it was crucial not to become complacent if they want to maintain their rhythm and execute their plans and strategies. “We do not want to concede early goals like what happened (in the previous match). We learn from it and ensure it doesn’t recur,” Kim Swee said. “Make sure we are totally focused right until the final whistle. If we look at our record at the Likas Stadium, we have always managed to get an early goal or score in the first half. “Even if we were to score one or two goals early on, but become complacent after that, the same thing will happen. We must remain focused so that we finish off whatever chances we create. “We want to win and automatically qualify for the next round,” he said during the prematch press conference at the Likas Stadium yesterday. In their third Group H match at the Lach Tray Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam on Oct 25, Sabah lost 3-2 to Hai Phong after the home team scored two early goals in the 14th and 18th minutes. Asked about today’s starting XI, Kim Swee said he was still assessing his players by taking into account their recovery from injuries as well as fatigue among the national players who have just rejoined the team. “All the players are in good shape but I still need to assess some of them. I still have about 24 hours to evaluate their conditions,” he said. Commenting on Hai Phong, he said they must not underestimate the threat posed by the Vietnamese team, especially their import players and the fact that they managed to bounce back from losing to Hougang United to beat his men last month. Meanwhile, Hai Phong head coach Chu Dinh Nghiem said the team have identified several Sabah players who can be a threat to them, including the likes of national striker Darren Lok, South Korean defensive midfielder Park Tae-su and Spanish forward Miguel Cifuentes. “Not easy to play against Sabah at (their) home and we have players who are injured, including our goalkeeper, wingers and some other players,” he said. “Sabah have good players and we want to play well (and) at least can get one point on Thursday.” – Bernama Sweet revenge for JDT coach Solari CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Group E Atletico Madrid 6 (Griezmann 6, 60, Morata 45+2, 76, Lino 66, Niguez 84)) Celtic 0, Lazio 1 (Immobile 45+1) Feyenoord 0. MFL in a post on their Facebook announced that the kickoff of the final between the two giants of local football is scheduled for 9pm on Dec 8. However, MFL have not announced the ticket prices for the match. Champions of the 2017, 2019 and 2022 editions, JDT advanced to the final after recording a 12-2 aggregate victory over Perak FC in the semifinals. Terengganu, who were champions in the 2001 edition, confirmed their slot in the final after a 4-2 aggregate victory over Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC. The quality of the new grass at the National Stadium drew criticism at the Pestabola Merdeka tournament last month, which was also the first tournament to be held at the venue after it was closed since March to upgrade the pitch to new Zeon Zoysia grass. In the same posting, MFL announced the date and venue for the MFL Challenge Cup final between PDRM FC and Kuching City FC. The Cops will host the first leg of the final on Nov 29 at the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium (MBPJ), while Kuching will host the second leg on Dec 3 at Stadium Negeri. Both matches will start at 8.15pm. – Bernama JDT’s Oscar Arribas (centre) in action against Ulsan Hyundai FC players during the Asian Champions League (ACL) match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium yesterday. – BERNAMAPIX

The England international was withdrawn at half-time at the Etihad Stadium. Manager Pep Guardiola described the loss of Stones as the “deep bad news” from a night when City secured their place in the last 16 for an 11th successive year with an otherwise straightforward 3-0 win. Guardiola said: “It’s muscular, he is injured, so he’ll be a while out. It is a pity for him because he’s an incredible professional. “He tried to do it but it’s bad news for us. It’s the deep bad news for tonight.” The news is a further blow for Stones, who has already missed two months of the season with a hamstring problem. One player apparently untroubled was Erling Haaland, who made light of the ankle problem that curtailed him on Saturday to score two of City’s goals in a one-sided encounter with the Swiss champions. Phil Foden also got on the scoresheet as City won their fourth Group G game in succession to secure progress with two games to spare. Guardiola said of Haaland, who was substituted on the hour: “Yesterday we saw how he moved and how happy he was and he felt good. I said, OK and for us he’s so important. “After the job was almost done, he took a rest for (the game against Chelsea on) Sunday (Mon 12.30am in Malaysia).” Guardiola was pleased with his side’s achievement but, with RB Leipzig three points behind, maintained he would not ease up until top spot in the group was secured. “We’ve already qualified but still the job is not done because we have to finish first. “It’s better to have the second leg in the last 16 at home than away because at home we feel confident. Still you have a job to do but the first step is done and I’m really impressed.” It was a miserable night for Young Boys, who ended the game with 10 men after Sandro Lauper was sent off for a second bookable offence. Coach Raphael Wicky said: “We’re obviously not happy. We’re not happy with the performance we’ve made but we know it’s very difficult to get something here. “We knew if we want to get a point or a win, we needed to have the perfect game. “I saw some good stuff in the first half but it’s very difficult to defend against Man City. They always have chances.” – The Independent █ BY ANDY HAMPSON Man City’s John Stones (left) closes in on Young Boys’ Cheikh Niasse during the Champions League Group B 2nd leg match at the Etihad Stadium yesterday. – AFPPIX Stones blow dampens City joy England defender substituted at halftime against Young Boys with muscle injury
