COMMUNITY COMMUNITY 17 TUESDAY | NOV 21, 2023 ogress Jempol boasts stunning landscapes and tourist attractions that are sure to captivate visitors. – BERNAMAPIC MP places emphasis on education among constituents least 30% in fertiliser subsidies to Felda settlers,” he stressed. Ensuring adequate housing for the new generation of Felda settlers, Shamshulkahar said, is another crucial issue that needs to be addressed. “Recognising that many of them lack a stable income, I fully support Felda’s initiative to provide empty land plots for them to build their houses. “However, I believe that further support is necessary and have proposed that the government offer housing loans and financing facilities so that they can realise their dream of owning a home in Felda areas.” Shamshulkahar, who is from Umno, also raised in Parliament his concern over the dilapidated staff houses in Felda settlements. “With over 2,000 staff houses built between 1959 and 2014, many of them have deteriorated, posing safety concerns for Felda staff. “Recognising the importance of providing comfortable and modern facilities for them, I suggested that the government replace the old houses with new ones to ensure their wellbeing and productivity,” he said. Shamshulkahar’s relentless efforts demonstrate his commitment to championing the needs and concerns of the Felda community in Jempol. Through his various proposals for the betterment of Felda settlers, he aims to improve their quality of life. “I hope to secure the attention and support of the government in addressing these pressing issues and ensuring the overall well-being and comfort of the community in Jempol, particularly Felda settlers.” Calling Jempol much more than just a district in Malaysia. he said it is a haven for peace and harmony, and a diverse community that embraces its cultural roots. “Whether you are seeking an adventure in nature or a cultural immersion, Jempol has something to offer everyone. “I will always be committed to serving the local community and ensuring their way of life and living standards advance in tandem with the rest of the country.” – By Sivanisvarry Morhan Shamshukahar (third from right) extends aid to those in need of help. Shamshulkahar inspects the impact of a road collapse in Jempol. PETALING JAYA: Paving the way for a bright future for students, Jempol member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli is also very keen to promote education among his constituents. Shamshulkahar, who is also the president of Poly-Tech Mara College (KPTM), said he intends to develop a KPTM in Jempol. By doing so, he believes that more skilled graduates can come from the district. “I had a discussion on this with Deputy Prime Minister and Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Parliament recently. “He fully supports my educational ideas for Jempol and agrees that they present a pathway to a brighter future for students in the district,” he said. Shamshulkahar said even now, the district has its vibrant and productive workforce, but he wants to make it better. “Over 82,000 individuals in the district are of working age. They comprise 34,000 young adults and 10,000 senior citizens. “This demonstrates the dynamic balance between age groups and the opportunities available for personal and professional growth,” he said. With a significant population of Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) settlers, Shamshulkahar said it is important to look after them as they contribute significantly to the district’s economy and the country’s gross domestic product. Recognising this, Shamshulkahar proposed during the Budget 2024 debate to increase the minimum monthly income for Felda settlers from RM1,200 to RM1,500, to help contain the rising cost of living. “Unlike other farming and commodity agencies, Felda settlers bear the full cost of fertilisers, which amounts to an average of RM8,500 annually. “Hence, I have also proposed that the government consider providing at offers an alternative route that can be used by Felda residents in the area, including the Orang Asli community. “Kampung Sungai Kelai consists of the Orang Asli community in Palong 12 and Palong 13. With the completion of this new project, there will be three routes – Felda Palong and Ladang Bahau as well as the existing road – to Keratong. “The new road will connect Kampung Geddes to Kampung Sungai Kelai in Palong, covering a distance of 10km, which means that alternative routes will be available in that area,” the MP said. Shamshulkahar said the effort would shorten the travel time for residents in the surrounding areas, especially during emergencies, while also ensuring their safety with a better road network. He emphasised prioritising regular inspections and necessary repairs to keep the road safe for residents and commuters. “Once infrastructure is developed, it is crucial to ensure that proper maintenance is carried out to prevent any collapses or damages. “This involves coordinating with the relevant authorities and the community so that immediate corrective measures are taken if a problem is spotted,” he said. While the projects are positive developments, Shamshulkahar said some residents might experience inconvenience during the development stage. “My team and I will engage with the community, address their concerns and complaints that arise, and manage their expectations for future infrastructure projects. “Building trust and maintaining open lines of communication within the constituency and the community can be a challenge at times. “But by being there for them at all times, we can build trust and a well-developed Jempol district in the years to come,” said Shamshulkahar, who has been Jempol MP since November last year.

Gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 1.5% in the July-September quarter from a year earlier, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said, down from the 2.4% growth predicted by economists in a Reuters poll. The quarterly growth was the slowest in the past three quarters, having risen 1.8% year-onyear in the second quarter and 2.6% in the January-March period. Solid private consumption and a recovery in tourism prevented an even more disappointing performance by Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. Sluggish global demand kept exports subdued, though the planning agency noted signs of improvement in the current quarter. “Overall, the Thai economy continues to expand. But if we want to make the economy expand better than this, it must be restructured, especially in the industrial sector,” planning agency chief Danucha Pichayanan told a press conference. “In the fourth quarter, export momentum began to improve. It should make industrial production better as well.” Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said he was “very worried” about the weakerthan-expected economic growth in the third quarter. “We will focus on improving the fourth quarter,” he told reporters. The weak GDP data underscored the need for fiscal and monetary policy to “focus on growth over inflation”, said Kobsidthi Silpachai, head of capital markets research of Kasikornbank. The Bank of Thailand will next review policy on Nov 29 after a surprise increase in the key rate to a decade high of 2.5% in September. Kobsidthi said he expected the central bank to hold rates steady through the first half of 2024. The planning agency said it expected the economy to grow 2.5% in 2023, the lower end of a previous forecast range of 2.5% to 3.0%, but sees GDP growth of between 2.7% and 3.7% next year. Next year’s figures did not factor in the government’s signature stimulus plan of injecting US$14 billion (RM65.2 billion) into the economy via a “digital wallet” handout scheme for 50 million people to spend in their localities within six months. On a quarterly basis, GDP rose a seasonally adjusted 0.8% in the September quarter, versus a forecast rise of 1.2%, and against 0.2% growth in the previous quarter. NESDC predicted a 2% contraction in exports, a key driver of Thai growth, for this year, having earlier forecast a 1.8% fall seen earlier. For 2024, it expects exports to rise 3.8%. The agency maintained its forecast of foreign tourist arrivals at 28 million this year, and predicted 35 million visitors in 2024. The choice is a major departure from its decision in 2017, announced with much fanfare, to be at the vanguard of adopting blockchainlike technology for use in critical financial architecture, an attempt that resulted in repeated delays before it was shelved last year. It also represents a more cautious approach: ASX will switch to the new software in stages, rather than the “big bang” changeover that its users considered risky. That will, however, take time, with the overhaul now expected to finish in 2029, some 13 years after it began. India-listed TCS’s software is used by exchanges around the world including in Finland and Canada for functions it would be expected to perform for ASX’s Clearing House Electronic Subregister System, or CHESS, the Australian exchange said yesterday. “They have a mature product and technology that they use to support quite a lot of customers,” ASX chief information officer Tim Whiteley said on a call with analysts and media. “The amount of customisation is minimised,” he added. Vivekanand Ramgopal, TCS’s president of banking products, said the ASX contract was “an affirmation of our track record in this missioncritical business”. The failure of ASX’s earlier blockchain-based project came after an external review found much of the code had to be rewritten. Digital Asset, the New York startup it hired at the time, declined to comment yesterday. The failure also resulted in a A$176.3 million (RM538.5 million) writedown and had shaken market participants’ trust in ASX, the world’s 17th biggest exchange that hosts companies worth a combined A$1.6 trillion. It also prompted the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) to open an investigation into the exchange’s disclosures about the project. “This is an important decision by ASX but there is still a long way to go to deliver a CHESS replacement,” ASIC chair Joe Longo said in a statement. “It will be critical for ASX to now focus on engaging with the market on the detailed design of the CHESS Replacement programme with a realistic and achievable timeline for implementation,” Longo added. – Reuters Foxconn’s EV unit falls in market debut amid tough industry outlook TAIPEI: Shares in Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, a unit of Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn, fell in their market debut yesterday, hurt by concerns over headwinds in the highly competitive electric vehicle market. Foxtron shares did recover some ground from earlier losses of as much as 9%, ending down 2.7% which gave it a market capitalisation of around US$2.7 billion (RM12.5 billion). In addition to inflation and higher interest rates which have raised the cost of buying a car, EV makers are grappling with supply chain bottlenecks and pricing pressure. “The EV market has been flooded by a red sea of price cuts by major players such as Tesla,” said an analyst at Mega International Securities, who asked not to be named, citing the firm’s policies on commenting publicly on listed companies. “Foxtron has lost money in 2021 and 2022, and we don’t think it will turn that around in the next two years.” Foxtron is a joint venture between Foxconn – the world’s largest contract manufacturer for iPhones and other consumer electronics – and local car maker Yulon. It currently has only one client, Luxgen, which is owned by Yulon. The company raised NT$7.5 billion (RM1.1 billion) in its initial public offering. – Reuters Optus chief exec resigns in mass outage fallout SYDNEY: The boss of Australian telecoms provider Optus has resigned following a mass outage that cut communications to more than 10 million people, its parent group said yesterday. Chief executive Kelly Bayer Rosmarin is being replaced three days after she was grilled by Australia’s Senate over a technical glitch in the early hours of Nov 8 that halted Optus’ mobile and internet systems for nearly 12 hours. “Having now had time for some personal reflection, I have come to the decision that my resignation is in the best interest of Optus moving forward,” she said in a statement released by parent company Singtel. Optus appointed chief financial officer Michael Venter as interim chief executive, in addition to his existing role, while it seeks a permanent replacement. Optus said the nationwide outage was caused when its routers automatically disconnected after becoming overloaded during a scheduled software upgrade. Unable to pinpoint the exact cause more than six hours after the outage began, Optus had to perform a hard reset of its systems. Bayer Rosmarin told the Senate on Friday that the Optus network should have been able to cope “but on this occasion it did not”. – AFP

CELCOMDIGI Bhd’s (CDB) 3QFY23 service revenue remained steady at RM2,712m (+0.2% qoq). The marginal decline in postpaid revenue (-0.8% qoq) was made up by higher revenue from the prepaid (+0.2% qoq), wholesale (3.9% qoq) and home fibre (+7.1% qoq) segments. Note that the postpaid revenue was impacted by lower usage and further regulatory curbs on bulk messaging traffic. CDB’s 3QFY23 normalised earnings came in at RM594m (+13.8% qoq). We view that the improvement came from lower cost (-6.3% qoq) as well as lower effective tax rate of 19.8%. Meanwhile, 3QFY23 service revenue remained steady at RM2.7b. 3QFY23 total cost declined by -6.3% qoq to RM1,538m which was mainly attributable to lower regulatory network related cost as well as lower sales and marketing activities. Cumulatively, 9MFY23 earnings amounted to RM1,615m. On comparable basis results, this translates into a growth of approximately 12.8% yoy. All in, CDB’s 9MFY23 financial performance surpassed our expectation, making up 80.8% of FY23 full year earnings estimates respectively. CDB’s 9MFY23 capex intensity reduced to 7.9% from 10.7% a year ago. This led to a lower 9MFY23 capex of RM745m as opposed to RM989m (9MFY22). We expect this to increase significantly in 4QFY23 to meet its full year guidance of 15% to 18%. To account better than expected cost structure, we revise upwards for FY23 to FY25 earnings estimate to RM2.2b to RM2.8b (between +0.7% to +11.3%). We also adjust downward our dividend assumption to be more reflective of the current run rate. Our target price is tweaked slightly lower to RM4.94 (from RM4.97 previously) while we maintain our valuation parameters. We are keeping our BUY recommendation with a revised target price of RM4.94. - (Nov 20, 2023) IN LINE with our expectations of an improved 2H23 following hiccups in 1H, Greatech Technology Bhd (Greatech) posted its best quarterly (3Q23) turnover (RM225m) to-date since its June 2019 listing. However, EBIT margin contracted 4ppts YoY mainly from (i) increased project expenditures; and (ii) unforeseen delays in revenue recognition. NP ex-EI margin however, expanded 3ppts QoQ as Greatech had received an approval in-principle from Mida for a 5-year extension of Pioneer Status exemption for its solar division. Hence, the group’s ETR has moderated to 6.9% in 3Q23 from 11.7% in 2Q23. Excluding one-offs, Greatech 3Q23 core earnings came in at RM46.5m (+58% YoY, +35% QoQ). One-offs for the quarter included lumpy share grant expenses (-RM1.9m), impairment of contract asset receivables (-RM2.3m), and unrealised FX losses (- RM5.3m). Cumulatively, 9M23 CNP of RM112.6m (+31% YoY) was in-line with our expectations, but came in below the street’s FY23 forecasts at 75%/66% respectively. Greatech’s outstanding orderbook as of Nov 10 stood at RM1.07b – a QoQ increase of RM460m. Although we’re unable to ascertain the breakdown of new orders at this juncture, we believe a bulk of it is from the solar and e-mobility segments. At current runrates, the O/B is expected to last through to 1H25. We also expect mgmt to secure further orders totaling c.RM190m by year-end. We maintain our FY23-25E forecasts, and TP of RM5.20 (pegged to 35x FY24E PER, at about its LT Mean). BUY rating maintained on compelling outlook and high growth sector exposure. - (Nov 20, 2023) HONG LEONG Industries Bhd’s (HLI) 1QFY24 results met our expectations at 28% of full-year forecast. It declared an interim NDPS of 20 sen (ex-date: Dec 4; payment date: Dec 21, 2023) in 1QFY24 vs. 20 sen paid in 1QFY23, within expectations. YoY, its 1QFY24 revenue fell 5% mainly due to weaker motorcycles sales affected by the credit tightening in financing. Its plant utilisation level at both Yamaha Motor and Guocera production plants are at 80%-90%. Its core net profit grew slightly stronger at 7% as higher margins from the new generation Y15ZR SE, XMax 250 and Ego Gear, were partially offset by a lower contribution from associate Yamaha Motor Vietnam. QoQ, its 1QFY24 revenue rose 9% driven by overwhelming demand for the new-generation Y15ZR SE, XMax 250 and Ego Gear (launched in July 2023). Its core net profit increased by a sharper 27% underpinned by higher margins from the new models and a lower effective tax rate. We also keep our TP at RM11.40 based on FY24F PER of 12x, at a 1x multiple premium to passenger vehicle sector’s average forward PER of 11x given its strong market position in the local motorcycle segment. There is no adjustment to our target price based on ESG given a 3-star rating. We like HLI: (i) as it is a strong proxy to the booming gig economy, (ii) for its association with the strong Yamaha motorcycle brand in Malaysia and the brand’s market leader position, and (iii) for its strong war chest with a net cash of RM1.6b. Its dividend yield is attractive at 7%. We maintain our forecasts, TP of RM11.40 and OUTPERFORM call.- (Nov 20, 2023) FOREIGN CURRENCY SELLING TT/OD BUYING TT BUYING OD 1 US Dollar 4.740 4.606 4.596 1 Australian Dollar 3.101 2.978 2.962 1 Brunei Dollar 3.526 3.424 3.416 1 Canadian Dollar 3.451 3.360 3.348 1 Euro 5.176 5.010 4.990 1 New Zealand Dollar 2.852 2.748 2.732 1 Papua N Guinea Kina N/A N/A N/A 1 Singapore Dollar 3.526 3.424 3.416 1 Sterling Pound 5.923 5.738 5.718 1 Swiss Franc 5.344 5.222 5.207 100 UAE Dirham 130.650 123.900 123.700 100 Bangladesh Taka 4.383 4.098 3.898 100 Chinese Renminbi 65.800 63.300 N/A 100 Danish Krone 71.150 65.490 65.290 100 Hongkong Dollar 61.470 58.430 58.230 100 Indian Rupee 5.790 5.440 5.240 100 Indonesian Rupiah 0.032 0.029 0.024 100 Japanese Yen 3.184 3.084 3.074 100 New Taiwan Dollar 16.000 N/A N/A 100 Norwegian Krone 44.980 41.390 41.190 100 Pakistan Rupee 1.680 1.570 1.370 100 Philippine Peso 8.680 8.180 7.980 100 Qatar Riyal 131.570 124.910 124.710 100 Saudi Riyal 127.880 121.400 121.200 100 South Africa Rand 26.790 24.200 24.000 100 Sri Lanka Rupee 1.490 1.370 1.170 100 Thai Baht 14.100 12.500 12.100 Exchange Rates Source: Malayan Banking Bhd/Bernama Ringgit ends higher against US$, in line with other currencies KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed stronger against the US dollar yesterday in line with the broader foreign exchange (forex) market as traders started to consider the real possibility of the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) cutting interest rates for nonrecessionary reasons, said an analyst. At 6pm, the ringgit rose to 4.6655/6705 against the greenback from Friday’s close of 4.6785/6825. SPI Asset Management managing director Stephen Innes said all eyes will be on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes this week to gauge how far the Fed’s appetite is for the “insurance cuts” or whether the central bank is more concerned about loosening financial conditions with bond yields currently lower and stocks higher. “Hence, there might not be insurance cuts. The US Thanksgiving week is typically a slow week for the forex markets, so I suspect markets may be more apt to consolidate,” he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit was traded lower versus a basket of major currencies. It decreased against the euro to 5.0999/1053 from Friday’s close of 5.0771/0814, eased vis-a-vis the British pound to 5.8314/8377 from 5.8056/8105 previously, and fell versus the Japanese yen to 3.1456/1491 from 3.1267/1296. The local note ended mixed against other Asean currencies. It slipped vis-a-vis the Indonesian rupiah to 302.0/302.5 from 301.9/302.3 and fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.4817/4857 from 3.4769/4801 on Friday. The ringgit strengthened versus the Thai baht to 13.2784/2987 from 13.3298/3481 but was unchanged against the Philippine peso at to 8.40/8.41. First reported by Deadline and then confirmed by others, Destin Daniel Cretton has exited Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the first of the two-parter that would end the MCU’s upcoming sixth phase. The film is also set to be the biggest ensemble team-up film since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. After previously directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Cretton is believed to have stepped away from The Kang Dynasty to focus on his other Marvel project, the upcoming Wonder Man series. He is also still attached to directing the sequel to Shang-Chi. Cretton’s exit has added further chatter to the future of the MCU’s trajectory, particularly The Kang Dynasty, due to the franchise’s current overarching villain Kang and the character’s actor, Jonathan Majors. The actor has already appeared in several MCU films and television shows as the studio fervently tries to set up Kang’s position as the “ultimate villain” in the current and next phases of the MCU. However, the actor’s future with the MCU is currently a question mark, as Majors is awaiting trial for domestic abuse charges. Though it is unlikely that The Kang Dynasty will get cancelled, the news of Cretton’s exit may signal further weakness for Marvel Studios, which comes after two of its three 2023 films being box office disappointments. Everything paints a new picture for Marvel Studios, where it is no longer in a privileged position to throw any superhero film on the silver screen and expect a guaranteed blockbuster. Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter expressed excitement over the overwhelming response, emphasising that the original film’s exploration of emotions paved the way for a vast and intricate narrative in the sequel. Directed by Kelsey Mann, Inside Out 2 expands the imaginative universe, introducing fresh emotions that promise to captivate audiences. Docter commended the team for their exceptional work, highlighting the expansion of the emotional landscape and the introduction of new characters. With gratitude for the positive reception, he eagerly anticipates the film’s theatrical release next June, inviting everyone to delve into the cinematic journey. The two-part release, starting with the first four episodes on Thursday and the final six on Dec 14, marks the culmination of a 60-hour narrative that began in 2016. The drama traces Queen Elizabeth II’s journey from her 1947 marriage to Prince Philip to the early 2000s introduction of Kate Middleton, the current Princess of Wales. Season six delves into the last weeks of Princess Diana’s life, portraying her tumultuous divorce from the now King Charles III and leading up to her tragic demise on Aug 31, 1997, in a high-speed crash in the Alma tunnel of Paris, pursued by paparazzi. The final season notably recreates Queen Elizabeth’s televised address in 1997, paying tribute to Diana amid widespread public grief. Imelda Staunton, portraying the monarch, emphasises the immense responsibility felt in recreating such a powerful moment. Elizabeth Debicki, playing Diana, reflects on the emotional weight of the season, acknowledging the responsibility to tell the story honestly. The upcoming episodes, eagerly anticipated by those close to royalty, have already sparked accusations of disrespect, particularly concerning Lady Di’s portrayal as a ghost. The Crown has faced past criticism for its portrayal of historical events, prompting Netflix to add a disclaimer last year, acknowledging that the show is a work of fiction. As the series navigates the complexities of recent history, it continues to grapple with the intimate and personal perspectives that colour people’s perceptions. The Crown chronicling the reign of Queen Elizabeth II draws to a close. BabyMonster members confirmed

EDUCATION EDUCATION 26 TUESDAY | NOV 21, 2023 MSU opens new learning pathways for working adults S HAH ALAM: When working individuals wish to further their studies, a lack of professional qualifications sometimes become a barrier for entry to institutions of higher learning. Similarly, while many may have worked in the particular industry for decades, the absence of formal academic credentials may hinder opportunities for promotion within the organisation, or even job mobility. This could no longer be a problem, as Management and Science University now offers breakthrough pathways for working adults through its national Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) centre, which widens access to higher education for highly work-experienced individuals. MSU offers a wide range of academic programmes to suit the varied needs of working adults, tailored to meet their hectic schedules. Lifelong learning refers to the process of gaining knowledge and learning new skills throughout your life. Many people continue their education for personal development and fulfilment, while others see it as a significant step toward career advancement. Sitting for the APEL Aptitude Test With ten locations, including Sabah and Sarawak, for potential candidates to take the APEL Aptitude Test as the non-conventional pre-qualification for entry into higher studies, MSU currently offers APEL (A) and APEL (C) at T-3 (Certificate), T-4 (Diploma), T-6 (Bachelor’s degree), and T-7 (Master’s degree) levels. APEL (A), or Accreditation of Prior Prospective candidates are required to sit for the APEL Aptitude Test at the MSU campus in Shah Alam to evaluate their eligibility for enrolment. oAPEL options allow credit transfers and access to higher education without prior formal qualifications Experiential Learning provides working professionals with a direct pathway to higher education without prior formal educational qualifications. The systematic process involves the identification, documentation and assessment of prior experiential learning to determine the extent to which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes, for access to a programme of study and/or award of credits. APEL (C), or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning via Credit Transfer allows assessment of credits against matching modules in a programme of study. The APEL C pathway provides credit transfers for entry into diploma programmes up to PhD level. Once an APEL C applicant’s competency level is determined, the credits can shorten his or her entire study duration considerably, saving time and money. Normally, an individual with SPM qualifications applying for entry to university would qualify only for diploma studies. However, with APEL C, it now becomes possible to pursue a Bachelor’s degree directly. MSU Micro-Credential programme Another flexible option for adult learners to pursue higher education is a micro-credential programme, which offers industry in-demand programmes that provide flexible and made-easy learning assessments that fulfil his or her needs for comprehensive education in preferred areas of study. These stackable programmes allow for exemptions into academic programmes at MSU. Management of MSU APEL Centre The centre is currently managed by the MSU Continuing and Extended Education Centre (CEdEC), which was established with the objective to excel at providing continuing education in tandem with the current needs of society. While promoting lifelong education, CEdEC offers programmes that best suit those in need of flexibility in the scheduling and overall conduct of the teaching and learning experience. As professional adults in the working world or self-managed professions, the demands to balance work and study are an everyday struggle, be it financially, personally or professionally. In keeping up with the pace of the evolving scenarios in industries, MSU is providing opportunities by offering flexible learning modes and programmes. Blending technical vocational education and training (TVET) with traditional academic curricula, MSU enhances competencies with industry internship, community and creative entrepreneurship, as well as global exposure, empowering MSU graduates with the well-roundedness desired. Among the best in the region, MSU programmes of study are meticulously crafted to enhance graduate potential, producing graduates that are a popular pick among employers. For more information on the full range of flexible programmes offered at MSU, please email [email protected], visit www.msu.edu.my or call 03-5521 6868.

The Swedish rookie had obtained his tour card through the PGA Tour University pathway after a fine career at Texas Tech. He won on the DP World Tour in September and made Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup team soon after. Now the 24-year-old’s resume has grown again, as Aberg posted a 29-under 253 for the week at Sea Island Resort. “This is what you dream of as a kid,” Aberg told NBC Sports after his win. “This is the sport that I love and the sport that I am going to love for a very long time. Watching these events from a very young age… to see myself win is really cool.” Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes shot a 63 yesterday to finish 25-under, and he was the only player within six shots of Aberg. “I feel as though it’s one of those tournaments where you finish up and you feel like you didn’t lose the tournament, you just got beat,” Hughes told reporters. “Yeah, just got beat this week. Hats off to Ludvig, he played unbelievable golf.” Aberg and Hughes also secured their places in two signature events next winter, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational, by finishing in the top 60 of the inaugural FedEx Cup Fall standings. That group also includes Ben Griffin, Taylor Montgomery, J.J. Spaun, Sam Ryder and Luke List, who was 60th. Aberg told NBC Sports the win has enhanced his confidence about turning pro in June. “(The win) validates my skillset and my capabilities,” Aberg said. “If you told me this a couple months ago, I would not have believed you. “To be in this position, I pinch myself in the arm, but it’s really awesome and I am so happy for me, my team and all the people that I am close with.” – Field Level Media Aberg wins maiden title at RSM Classic under heading to the par-three 16th, and it looked as if they would remain tied at the top after Yang missed a long putt for birdie and the solo lead. Yet Hataoka bogeyed after missing her short par putt to leave Yang one shot clear with two to play. Yang said she was “really nervous” as they dueled down the stretch, knowing that Hataoka could seize the momentum at any moment. “I had no idea where this was going,” Yang said. “All I could do was just stick to my game and trust it.” The Korean then turned the screw on the par-five 17th. Both players were left with tricky third shots after seeing their seconds miss the green. Yang though produced a sublime third shot, her chip for eagle lipping out to leave herself with a short putt for birdie. Hataoka’s chip left her with an awkward birdie chance which she duly missed. Yang coolly rolled in her birdie to leave her two shots clear going to 18, and from there she never looked like slipping up, nailing her second to within eight feet for another birdie chance. Hataoka missed her birdie putt from off the green, giving Yang three putts from eight feet to seal victory. – AFP

SPORTS SPORTS TUESDAY | NOV 21, 2023 28 Thunder Down Under Cummins says leading Australia to World Cup title ‘pinnacle in cricket’ PAT CUMMINS said captaining Australia to World Cup title glory was the “pinnacle in cricket” after his side dashed the dreams of tournament hosts India with a six-wicket win in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The final was a personal triumph for Cummins, whose decision to field first was vindicated as India – the only previously unbeaten team at the tournament after a run of 10 straight wins – were held to a modest 240 all out. “That’s huge, that’s the pinnacle in cricket, winning a World Cup, especially here in India, in front of a crowd like this,” he said. It has been a personal and professional rollercoaster for Cummins in 2023. In March, he returned home from a tour of India to be with his mother, Maria, before she died. “I’ve obviously had a really big year. I know my family at home is watching, just got a message from dad saying he’s had a lot of 4am wake-ups, not going to bed until 4am, so he’s as pumped as anything. “You sacrifice a lot to play for Australia and everyone in the team has and we’ve spent a lot of this year away but we do it for these moments.” India star batsman Virat Kohli ended the match having set a new record for most runs – 765 – at a single World Cup. But when fast bowler Cummins had Virat playing on for 54 on Sunday, to leave India 148-4, a crowd of over 92,000 at the Narendra Modi Stadium fell into stunned silence. Before the match, Cummins – who finished the final with superb figures of 2-34 in 10 overs – had said there was no better feeling for an opposition player than quieting a partisan home crowd. Cummins, asked if dismissing Virat was as sweet a moment as he had known in cricket, the 30-yearold replied: “I think so. We did take a second in the huddle just to acknowledge the silence that was going around the crowd. “It just felt like it was one of those days where it was all made for him (Virat) to score another hundred like he normally does – so that was satisfying.” Australia briefly wobbled at 47-3 in their reply but man-of-the-match Travis Head’s 137, and the opener’s partnership of 192 with Marnus Labuschagne (58 not out), secured a recordextending sixth World Cup title for Australia with seven overs to spare. “Travis Head was phenomenal,” said Cummins. “He takes the game on, he plays with a smile, he just puts the pressure right back onto the opposition and he’s just great fun to be around.” In between their world titles, Australia also retained the Ashes during a 2-2 drawn series in England. “It’s been a big year for everyone, but our cricket team has been here in India, Ashes, World Test Championship and to top it off with this is just huge,” said Cummins. – AFP OPENER Travis Head was pinching himself after conjuring up yet another match-winning knock in the final of a global event that earned Australia their sixth 50-overs World Cup title on Sunday. Head was named player of the match for his rapid 163, which secured Australia victory in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India at The Oval in June. Barely five months after that knock, the lefthander smashed a magnificent 137 against the same opponents in Sunday’s final to script their sixwicket victory against the tournament’s form team. “Not in a million years did I think that would happen,” Head said as his teammates celebrated their victory. “What an amazing day. I’m just thrilled to be a part of it.” Head missed Australia’s first five matches with a hand injury he sustained in South Africa in September. “It is a lot better than being sat on the couch at home. I’m very lucky that everything went well and I was able to get back and the support that the boys showed, I didn’t think this would happen,” Head said. Head also made a telling contribution in the field when he ran backwards from cover to take a tumbling catch to send back India captain Rohit Sharma. “Rohit Sharma was probably the unluckiest man in the world,” said Head. “I do work hard on my catching but I couldn’t imagine holding onto that. It is a nice thing I’ll be able to look back on later in my life.” – Reuters INDIA captain Rohit Sharma admitted his team were “not good enough” after slumping to a sixwicket loss to Australia in the World Cup final in Ahmedabad. The hosts, who came in undefeated into the title clash with 10 wins, were bowled out for 240, a total Australia overhauled in 43 overs with Travis Head smashing 137 in Ahmedabad. The result shattered India’s dreams of ending a global title drought stretching back to the 2013 Champions Trophy. “I mean the result hasn’t gone our way and we know that we were not good enough on the day. But proud of the team,” Rohit said after the loss. “It wasn’t supposed to be. Honestly, 20- 30 more runs would’ve been good. I thought when KL (Rahul) and Virat (Kohli) were batting, we were looking at 270-280 at that point and we kept losing wickets.” Rohit hit a quickfire 47 before Australia hit back with wickets and bowled out the hosts in 50 overs despite fifties from Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66). Australia slipped to 47-3, but the lefthanded Travis Head stood firm and put on 192 runs with Marnus Labuschagne, who made an undefeated 58. “With 240 on the board, we wanted early wickets but credit to Travis Head and Marnus,” said Rohit. “They put us completely out of the game and I thought the wicket got better to bat under lights. “I mean we knew under lights, it would be better but don’t want to give that as an excuse.” Despite the defeat, India coach Rahul Dravid said Rohit batted superbly and “led the team fantastically well”. “I think he has been an exceptional leader. Rohit has really led this team fantastically well,” Dravid told reporters. “Just think he has given so much of his time and energy in the dressing room with the boys. He is always been available for any of our conversations.” He added: “His batting as well, it was fantastic. It set the tone for us. We knew we wanted to play a certain way, a positive attacking brand of cricket and he was committed to doing that. “He wanted to lead by example and all through the tournament he was quite superb.” – AFP Rohit admits India ‘not good enough’ Gilchrist hails ‘finest’ triumph FORMER star batter Adam Gilchrist yesterday rated Australia’s World Cup triumph as one of his country’s “finest” cricket wins after they beat hosts India to earn a sixth one-day international title. “So proud of this Australian team and crew,” Gilchrist wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “To win another World Cup in the manner and circumstance they have is one of the finest victories in our sporting history I reckon. “Time to celebrate,” added Gilchrist, who scored 149 not out in the 2007 World Cup final win over Sri Lanka in Barbados. Cricket Australia’s chief executive Nick Hockley said the team deserved the title. “This is another wonderful achievement by Pat Cummins and his team who have performed brilliantly in testing conditions and against strong opposition throughout the tournament,” Hockley said in a statement. “To beat the previously undefeated India before their passionate home fans is an achievement that sits comfortably alongside any of Australia’s five previous ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup finals victories.” India fans heartbroken INDIA’S six-wicket loss to Australia in the final of the Cricket World Cup in Ahmedabad Sunday left tens of thousands of fans heartbroken and in frantic search of a new plan for the night ahead. “I am returning to my home in Mumbai now,” said Jine Shah, 40, who left the stadium when Australia still needed 49 runs to win their sixth World Cup title. Rajiv Kumar, 25, who planned to “celebrate through the night after India’s expected win”, couldn’t pinpoint what went wrong with the team. “I just want to go back to my hotel to sleep and not think of this now if possible,” Kumar added. “I don’t know what to do now,” Rajinder Singh, who came from Delhi told AFP. “It feels so sad and empty as the World Cup has come to an end and we didn’t win it.” SHORTS Head basks in glory of another masterclass Australia players celebrate with the trophy after winning the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final against India. – AFPPIX India’s Rohit Sharma looks dejected after losing the ICC Cricket World Cup final. – REUTERSPIX

SPORTS SPORTS TUESDAY | NOV 21, 2023 29 NOVAK DJOKOVIC has no intention of slowing down after capping another incredible year with yesterday’s record-breaking seventh ATP Finals victory. At 36 years old Djokovic is still tennis’ No. 1 player by some distance and he has racked up a host of new records this season, taking his Grand Slam tally to 24 and finishing top of the year-end world rankings for the eighth time. He swept past young pretenders Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 and Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-3 on his way to triumph in Turin and is gunning for more glory in 2024, when Paris hosts the one major event where he has not won – the Olympics. Asked what else he can accomplish in tennis, Djokovic joked: “Well, you can win four Slams and Olympic gold”. “I have always the highest ambitions and goals. That’s not going to be different for the next year, that’s for sure. The drive that I have is still there,” he added. “Motivation, especially for the biggest tournaments in sport, is still present… For me, obviously those are Grand Slams and Finals, and next year hopefully also Olympic Games.” The Olympics take place over July 26-Aug 11 in the French capital, starting less than a fortnight after Wimbledon and finishing shortly before the US Open. It is a major career goal sandwiched into an already long, draining season, one which will take its toll on all the top players let alone one heading towards his late 30s. Steffi Graf is the only player to have achieved the “Golden Slam”, winning the Australian, French and US Opens, Wimbledon and a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. “It is definitely one of the major goals for next year, other than Grand Slams,” said Djokovic. “It’s going to be very congested schedule with going from the slowest to the fastest surface in sport back to the slowest. Clay, grass, clay, then hard court. Obviously that’s a very demanding, challenging stretch of the year.” Vanquished finalist Sinner hailed Djokovic as an “inspiration” during the trophy ceremony and is using the Serb as a model for his own bid for the sport’s top honours. Both Djokovic and his coach Goran Ivanisevic predicted that Sinner, who claimed four tour-level titles this season, will one day win Grand Slams and top the world rankings. And his performances at the Pala Alpitour have been cause for great optimism within Italian tennis. “He’s an inspiration because he worked throughout the whole years before, when he was younger, in the right way to get to this point. That’s also one of my goals,” Sinner told reporters. “It’s not only about watching one season. You watch this season, and you say, OK, I played good. But you have to play well every season, and you have to get to a certain age, which is 35, 36, 37, whatever, and you can still feel the body in the right way.” – AFP Djokovic targets Golden Slam Serb has ‘highest ambitions’ after record ATP Finals triumph Russell takes the blame for Verstappen collision GEORGE RUSSELL accepted the blame for a costly Las Vegas Grand Prix collision that left Mercedes in danger of losing second place overall to Ferrari in the Formula One constructors’ championship. Russell was handed a five-second penalty for a lap 25 clash with Red Bull’s triple world champion and eventual winner Max Verstappen that demoted the Briton from fourth at the finish to eighth. Ferrari ended up scoring 16 points more than Mercedes and closed the gap to four with just one race remaining in Abu Dhabi next weekend. “Just another massively missed opportunity this weekend,” Russell told Sky Sports. “The incident with Max was totally my fault. I didn’t see him, he was totally in my blind spot going around turn 11. I wasn’t really expecting to be overtaken there because you’ve got the big long straight with DRS afterwards. “We were on course for an easy podium, it was pretty straightforward. “This season is sort of one thing after another.” Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said it was game over once Russell incurred the penalty but remained optimistic for the finale. “I think we hopefully can recover and score solid podiums,” he said of Abu Dhabi. Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur was also hopeful of a strong finish to the season after Charles Leclerc started on pole position and finished second with Carlos Sainz sixth. “We must keep the momentum going into Abu Dhabi, both drivers are doing a fantastic job and I believe we can catch Mercedes,” he said. “We won in Singapore when Red Bull was off the pace but this time we were fighting them right up to the final corner.” – Reuters TOTO WOLFF took a swipe at former race director Michael Masi after his controversial actions at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. On Nov 26 F1 will head to the Yas Marina Circuit for the final race of the season and it will be the last chance for teams to score some more points before another gruelling year comes to an end. Mercedes head to Abu Dhabi with the chance to finish second in the Constructor standings and Lewis Hamilton has an opportunity to come third in the Driver standings behind Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. The Silver Arrows now have an indifferent relationship with the Abu Dhabi GP given how Hamilton lost a chance to win a record eighth world championship in 2021. Wolff has not forgotten how Masi’s contentious decision in the latter stages of the race two years ago influenced the outcome and allowed Verstappen to win his first title. Speaking about heading to Abu Dhabi after Sunday’s Las Vegas GP, Wolff could not resist making some comments aimed at Masi indirectly. “I think we’re going there pretty much equal on points. With a proper race director, so that should be fine,” the Austrian told reporters. “Then let’s race. It’s all down to the last weekend. They are very quick and done a good job. I think we could have been on par today. But the result shows something different. “To be honest, it’s good to have P2 as a positive to finish the season, but P2, P3 for me there is little… it doesn’t make me particularly cheerful anyway.” Hamilton has not won a race since the 2021 Saudi Grand Prix and could only manage P7 at the Las Vegas Street Circuit. Teammate Russell finished eighth and Mercedes are now just four points ahead of Ferrari in the constructors standings going into Abu Dhabi. Reflecting on the race, Wolff appeared dejected. “Sad to say yet another time we had pace but just no result,” he said. “George after the incident with Verstappen when he got a penalty, that was pretty much game over. “Also, he had pace at the front, maybe not Max, but it is what it is. We have seen paceish today. I think we can hopefully recover and score solid podiums (in Abu Dhabi).” – Express Newspapers Wolff digs up old grave ahead of Abu Dhabi GP Norris gives the all-clear MCLAREN’S Lando Norris assured fans he would be fine for Formula One’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after crashing and being taken to hospital in Las Vegas on Saturday. The Briton hit the wall hard at high speed on lap three, triggering a safety car interlude in a spectacular race won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. “I just bottomed out on the restart (after a virtual safety car period), lost the rear and hit the wall,” said the 24-year-old. “Big thanks go to the medical staff for checking me over, and to the team for the work they’ll now put in on the car. One week to reset and go again for the season finale in Abu Dhabi.” Norris posted photos on Instagram of him at the hospital, with the words “Big impact. But feeling okay! Thanks for all the messages. See you next weekend.” … as McLaren boss demands change MCLAREN team principal Andrea Stella has called for a bump on the Las Vegas circuit to be removed in time for the 2024 edition of the race after Lando Norris suffered a heavy impact in a lap-four crash during the Grand Prix. Discussing the crash after the race, team principal Stella said: “There’s a bump in that place. And you can see all cars sparkle when they go through this bump. “I think the combination of the bump and the cold tyres might have surprised him. “I think that bump, if we carry on racing at night time, should be fixed because the tyres will always be cold (with) low grip and it becomes a very tricky corner. “Already during the weekend, we saw cases of oversteer in that place. So independently of the timetable, we would strongly recommend that this bump is smoothened out.” LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX TOP 10: 1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull), 2. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), 3. SPORTS SPORTS TUESDAY | NOV 21, 2023 30 S TEVE CLARKE savoured the chance to celebrate Scotland’s Euro 2024 qualification with the Hampden crowd after his side rounded off their campaign with a “strange” 3-3 draw against Norway. Scotland had qualified with two games to spare and finished second behind Spain in Group A after a second consecutive draw ensured they have only lost once in the section. The players, including injured captain Andy Robertson, did a lap of honour afterwards to mark their achievement. Clarke said: “It was nice – and nice for the supporters – to say thank you to the team, a nice night for the team and staff to thank the supporters. “It’s always nice to qualify for a major tournament. Obviously the last one was Covid-restricted so we missed that connection and that feel with the fans. “It’s great for everyone in the country that we have something to look forward to next summer.” Clarke’s side twice came from behind in the first half through John McGinn’s penalty and an own goal before Stuart Armstrong netted a well-worked goal to out them in front just before the hour mark. However, former Celtic winger Mohamed Elyounoussi came off the bench to head home in the 86th minute as Norway scored their third goal from a cross originating from rightback Julian Ryerson. “It was a strange game,” Clarke said. “I need to go away and analyse it. What we have worked really hard at is being competitive, being a competitive team every time we go on to the pitch. “That’s why I was a little bit disappointed with the first half, I didn’t think we were competitive enough. Much more competitive second half. “We are Scotland, we have a certain way of playing, we like to play on the front foot.” A two-goal win would have put Scotland in pot two for the Dec 2 draw, although they are arguably better off in pot three given they will now avoid the likes of the Netherlands, Italy and Croatia. “I’m not bothered,” Clarke said. “I don’t know even know who else is in pot three and pot two. I’m sure I will find out when I get to Hamburg.” Norway head coach Stale Solbakken felt his side should have been ahead at halftime but feels Scotland will pose problems in Germany. “Overall we were the better team and should have won but it’s not easy, Scotland are always very well organised,” he added. “They have a great coach and have very disciplined players who know their strengths and limitations. That’s very important – they play to their strengths and don’t pretend to be something else. “They also have tournament experience so I think they can be a handful for everyone next summer. They also play two systems which is valuable. “There will be no easy games for those teams who meet Scotland.” – The Independent Clarke toast Tartan Army @thesundaily FOLLOW ON Malaysian Paper INSTAGRAM Scotland in party mood despite ‘strange’ draw with Norway Portugal keep 100% record with 10th win PORTUGAL finished their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a 100% record by beating Iceland 2-0 yesterday, after Serbia booked their place at next year’s finals in Germany. Bruno Fernandes and Ricardo Horta netted the goals for Roberto Martinez’s Portugal, with Cristiano Ronaldo not on the scoresheet, to end with 10 wins from 10 matches in Group J. The 2016 winners will be among the favourites for the title in what could be the 38-year-old Ronaldo’s last major tournament. Slovakia finished eight points behind Portugal in the second qualifying place after a 2-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica. Luxembourg, who will head into the playoffs, were a further five points adrift after closing out an impressive group-stage showing with a 1-0 success in Leichtenstein. Earlier yesterday, Serbia qualified for the first time as an independent nation, after four previous failures to get to the main event, with a 2-2 draw against Bulgaria. The Serbs finish second in Group G behind Hungary who snuffed out any hopes Montenegro had of progressing by beating them 3-1 in Budapest. “The players showed a mentality of not giving up, believing in themselves,” said Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic. “It’s a big day for Serbian football. Serbia is finally at the European Championship. “I congratulate my boys, who fought until the end and believed. We are happy and satisfied.” Montenegro needed Serbia to lose to have any hope of taking their place in Germany but also needed to win against the Hungarians who have eased impressively through qualifying. Slobodan Rubezic put Montenegro ahead on 36 minutes but Hungary hit back in the second half with two goals in three minutes from Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai before Zsolt Nagy rounded off the win in added time. – AFP SPAIN beat Georgia 3-1 in their final Euro 2024 qualifying Group A match yesterday in a bittersweet victory for the hosts after midfielder Gavi suffered a knee injury. Spain, already assured of top spot, finished with 21 points after seven wins in eight matches, having lost only to second-placed Scotland, who had also already qualified for the finals and ended with 17 points after a 3-3 draw with Norway. Georgia finished fourth with eight points, three behind Norway in third, while Cyprus were bottom without a point. But for Spain coach Luis de la Fuente it was the most bitter victory of his career after 19-yearold Gavi, who plays for Barcelona, left the pitch in tears during the first half while grabbing his knee in pain. “It is a very difficult moment for Gavi, Barcelona, the national team and for me, it seems as if we have lost the game,” De la Fuente told a news conference. “This is the ugly part of football. I am very sorry. Let’s wait for the tests to confirm the extent of the injury. This is the most bitter victory I have ever experienced in my life.” Spain grabbed the lead in the fourth minute after a free kick from Ferran Torres on the left was headed home by Robin Le Normand for his first international goal. Georgia levelled six minutes later following a quick break and simple finish from forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before Gavi was injured in a collision with an opponent. “We can’t celebrate as we would have liked. Gavi’s injury is a hard blow, I’m really gutted,” said Le Normand. “It wasn’t my best game with the national team, there are things to improve”. The hosts restored their lead 10 minutes into the second half with a header from Torres, who celebrated by holding up the number nine jersey of his Barca team mate Gavi. Georgia’s Luka Lochoshvili put the ball in his own net in the 72nd minute to seal the Spaniards’ win. “An important victory to end on a good note, but we leave with a bittersweet feeling because of Gavi’s injury,” said Torres. “We don’t know the extent of the injury, but knowing how much of a warrior Gavi is, we think it could be serious.” – Reuters Gavi suffers knee injury in qualifying win █ BY GAVIN MCCAFFERTY Belgium’s Lukaku scores four, Serbia qualify ROMELU LUKAKU scored four goals as Belgium finished their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a 5-0 thrashing of Azerbaijan on Sunday, after Serbia booked their place at next year’s finals in Germany. Roma striker Lukaku extended his record tally of international goals for Belgium to 83, with all of his goals coming in a remarkable first half in Brussels. He opened the scoring in the 17th minute by converting a Jeremy Doku cross, before Eddy Israfilov was shown a second yellow card seven minutes later to leave the Azeris with a mountain to climb. Lukaku fired home shortly afterwards and then headed in Wout Faes’ delivery to complete a hattrick. He rounded off his scoring spree of four goals in 20 minutes. The Belgians took their foot off the gas in the second period but Leandro Trossard added a fifth in the 90th minute from another Doku assist. Belgium finished top of Group F, one point clear of Austria, with both having wrapped up qualification with matches to spare. Sweden ended a miserable campaign, in which they failed to qualify for a European Championship for the first time since 1996, with a 2-0 win over Estonia in the other game in the group. Serbia qualified for the first time as an independent nation, after four previous failures to get to the main event, with a 2-2 draw against Bulgaria. SPORTS SPORTS TUESDAY | NOV 21, 2023 31 THE Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has urged Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh to intervene and address the crisis it is embroiled in with Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias. OCM secretary-general Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin Mohd Najib said the statement issued by Suhardi on Nov 19 was beyond his scope of jurisdiction, especially when it touched on the performance and achievements of athletes under the auspices of national sports associations (NSAs). “Suhardi not only refused to apologise for equating the OCM with the Israeli regime but also touched on the achievements and performance of athletes under our auspices. “The jurisdiction of the Sports Commissioner’s Office (PJS) is limited to legislation related to the registration and cancellation or suspension of sports bodies registered under Act 576,” he said in a statement issued by OCM yesterday. Mohd Nazifuddin said OCM respects Suhardi as the Sports Commissioner, whose jurisdiction under Act 576 is very wide, but described the act enacted in Parliament as not belonging to individuals who can take arbitrary action, what more against OCM which has 58 national sports associations under its umbrella. “Suhardi’s defiance shows he is already beating the drums of war with OCM and our affiliates. “If Suhardi continues to show disrespect, OCM will adhere to the Charter of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which demands that any National Olympic Committee (NOC) defend its autonomous power and resist any form of pressure, which is not limited to political, legal, religious and economic pressure,” he said. Earlier, a one-minute and 20- second excerpt of an audio clip had gone viral via WhatsApp, with Suhardi allegedly threatening to deregister OCM. The recording of the conversation is believed to have been made during a meeting between Suhardi and two groups representing the e-sports leaders relating to the registration and international affiliation of a recognised e-sports body on Nov 14. OCM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria then issued a statement demanding Suhardi to clear the air, describing his statement as being uncalled for. Suhardi had said that he would lodge a police report against individuals who disseminated the audio recording without permission. Meanwhile, Suhardi, who was met by reporters after a sports symposium at the National Sports Council (NSC) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, said he would hold a meeting soon with OCM to resolve the matter. “We will defuse the situation, give a moment of calm to all parties and then discuss the matter with OCM, thus easing the pressure that has arisen as a result of this audio clip which should not have gone viral,” he said. Suhardi also asked all parties to learn from what happened, besides reminding them that spreading the audio clip is subject to regulations under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. – Bernama LIVERPOOL star Mohamed Salah was escorted off of the pitch whilst on international duty with Egypt over the weekend. The winger helped his side to a 2-0 victory over Sierra Leone before a flurry of pitch invaders prompted security measures to be amped up at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex Stadium. Salah was uncharacteristically not among the goals for Egypt yesterday during their World Cup qualifying group-stage clash with Sierra Leone. However, the impact of the Liverpool star was felt on the pitch and within the crowd. Former Aston Villa star Trezeguet opened the scoring for Egypt in the 11th minute when smashing home from close range after being teed up by Mostafa Mohamed. The winger then grabbed his brace in the 63rd minute after Salah picked out his teammate unmarked in the penalty area. Carnage then ensued after Egypt’s second, with Sierra Leone stars losing their cool and consequently being reduced to nine men, following Tyrese Fornah’s red card in the first half. Supporters in the crowd also failed to keep a lid on their emotions, with several entering the pitch to try and get within touching distance of Salah. It was unclear why Salah was the target for dozens of fans as security managed to take most of them down before they could even get close. Some fans did manage to run past security but Liverpool star Salah was promptly pulled away from the pitch invaders, with military officers also entering the pitch to ensure that the 31-year-old remained safe. Those who were successful in their pursuit of the winger were then taken away, with punches being thrown by members of the security team at one invader in particular. Members of the military team pitch-side, along with numerous security guards, then took the decision to rush onto the pitch after the fulltime whistle sounded and escort Salah off of the field and down the tunnel into the dressing room to avoid any further risks to his welfare. – Express Newspapers Malaysia turn on the style MALAYSIA turned on the style to capture five golds and a silver in the foam ball and fabric ball categories of the Asian Dodgeball Championships 2023 at the Tampines Sport Hub, Singapore. In the foam ball category, Malaysia emerged as the best among the 11 participating countries after clinching gold in the men’s, women’s and mixed team events in the Nov 17-19 tournament. The men’s and mixed teams stunned Australia 10-2 and 11-6 respectively in the final, while the women’s team downed Hong Kong 6-3 for victory. Meanwhile, in the fabric ball category, Malaysia continued their dominance by winning the men’s and mixed team gold medals by trouncing Australia 26-12 and 32-6 respectively. However, the national team missed out on a double hattrick when the national women’s team were edged 14-16 by Australia. Malaysia Association of Dodgeball (MAD) president Datuk V. Radha Krishnan lauded the national teams’ achievements. “Competition was very tough because most countries sent their first team as some of them are preparing for the World Championship in Austria next year. But our players showed great class to return with five golds and a silver. “Malaysia remains a powerhouse in Asian dodgeball and three of our players also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award. So, MAD is very satisfied with the performance of our team. – Bernama Salah escorted off as pitch invaders cause chaos THE Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) team are confident of being on the right track to capture the 2023 Raja Muda of Selangor International Regatta (RMSIR) title by capitalising on the expertise of all three branches of the MAF, namely the Air Force, the Navy and the Army. Lt Commander Mohd Hanif Husain, 40, the skipper of Uranus in the Class 1 category with a 13- member crew, said knowledge of the Straits of Melaka would come in handy to them in the 33rd edition of the RMSIR. He said his team would bounce back after they could only finish third in 19 hours, eight minutes and 19 seconds in the first round from Port Klang to Pulau Pangkor on Sunday. “Yesterday, we were the Line Honours as we were the fastest but after the handicap score of every race we took part in were taken into account, we ended up in third place. “However, it is normal to try to get your rhythm in the first race and, anyway, yesterday we also had some problems with our jib (small sail in the shape of a triangle positioned in front of the main sail on a boat). So, we should be more prepared for the rest of the races with the combined might of the MAF,” he told Bernama.
