KUALA LUMPUR: The visits of several top foreign leaders to Malaysia are a clear sign of their confidence in the country’s political stability, said Nusantara Academy of Strategic Research geostrategist and senior fellow Prof Dr Azmi Hassan. He said no country would want to explore investment potential or forge cooperation with another country whose political situation is unstable. “This means they are confident with the stability of our unity government. That is why the main agenda for the visit by Philippine president Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr is economy and trade. “They have confidence (to invest) … creating opportunities for bilateral investment cooperation that will benefit both parties, like enabling Malaysia to increase the inflow of FDI (foreign direct investments).” Azmi said Marcos Jr’s visit, from today until Thursday, would also include discussions on Asean geopolitical matters and the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. He added that the visit of Timor-Leste President Dr Jose Ramos-Horta to Malaysia at the end of the month could be taken as an indicator that other countries have high regard for Malaysia’s role and influence in Asean, Bernama reported. “It (Timor-Leste) knows we wield strong influence in Asean. So, I believe part of the agenda for their attendance is to get (Putrajaya’s) support and influence to help the country become Asean’s 11th member, as their application will be assessed this year. “The visit by Hong Kong’s chief executive (John Lee Ka-Chiu), in my view, will revolve 100% around the economic agenda, especially concerning health and medical tourism, without any discussions on geopolitical affairs.” Meanwhile, Universiti Sains Malaysia socio-political lecturer Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said the confidence manifested by the foreign leaders’ trips to Malaysia was closely linked to the standing of the nation’s top leaders. He said they chose Malaysia not only because of their confidence in the country’s stability but also their deep respect for its leaders. “This is a good sign, as apart from enhancing bilateral ties with these countries, it will create vast opportunities for strengthening cooperation among ministries, agencies and businesses. “This will facilitate bilateral diplomatic works on all fronts, leading to constructive talks on arising issues and win-win solutions that could boost bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the post-pandemic period,” he added. The Statistics Department said Malaysia’s economy is also on the rise, with inflation in June easing to 2.4%, the lowest in the first six months of the year and the index points recording 130.4 against 127.4 in the same month the previous year. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the slower increase in Malaysia’s inflation was driven by the lower increase in restaurants and hotels, at 5.4% (6.7% in May), food and non-alcoholic beverages at 4.7% (5.9% in May) and furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance at 2.3% (2.7% in May). Apart from that, the increase in Malaysia’s inflation for June was also contributed by a rise in miscellaneous goods and services (2.6%); health (2.0%) and education (1.9%). Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels and recreation services and culture recorded an increase of 1.8% and 1.6% respectively. This was followed by alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.6%) and clothing and footwear (0.1%). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said cooperation between the federal and state governments was very important to ensure that the well-being of the people is protected. “This is the time for the people to rise, believe in and be confident of the results of the work done by the unity government. “I ask the people of Kelantan to understand, and help save Kelantan and Malaysia because this is our opportunity to think of the plight of the Malays, take care of rural folk and urban poor as well as the development in this state.” Anwar was speaking at the launch of the unity machinery near Bukit Tiu in Kelantan during the Madani Unity Tour on Sunday. Also present was Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, urged the people of Kelantan to grant a chance to parties that helped form the unity government to govern the state. “All the candidates must work hard and we ask the people of Kelantan to allow candidates representing Pakatan Harapan and BN to win the state polls this time and take over the state leadership from PAS after 33 years. “If we win, we will be fair to everyone. We will give priority to those in need.” – Bernama Anwar and Ahmad Zahid at the event in Machang yesterday. – BERNAMAPIC Sign up for EPF i-Saraan scheme, workers urged KOTA BHARU: Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members should have savings of at least RM240,000 by the time they reach the age of 55 to enable them to retire, said Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. He said the amount would enable an individual to sustain himself financially for 20 years after retirement, with an expenditure of RM1,000 per month. “If someone retires at the age of 55, plus 20 years of post-retirement life, it would bring the total to 75 years, which is the life expectancy of Malaysians,” he said after visiting the Kelantan EPF headquarters yesterday. Ahmad said one suggestion given to workers to increase their EPF savings is by making voluntary contributions through the i-Saraan scheme. He said as of June, over 500,000 contributors had opted to make contributions through the i-Saraan scheme. “We want to ensure maximum participation of workers in the scheme, especially among those in the informal sector such as traders, fishermen, farmers, rubber tappers and others. Even civil servants are encouraged to contribute, even if they have a pension. “Through this scheme, eligible contributors will also receive the incentive offered by the government, which is up to a maximum of RM300 annually, if they contribute at least RM2,000 per year, in addition to a dividend of up to 5%.” Ahmad Maslan said 26 mobile EPF counters were launched on July 4 in the Eastern region, especially in rural areas, to promote and provide information about the scheme and retirement-related matters. “Through these mobile counters, EPF contributors and the general public can get retirement advice and calculate retirement savings to assess their adequacy, and ultimately secure a better retirement.”– Bernama RM91m paid in EIS benefits SEREMBAN: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) received 23,665 applications for benefits under the Employment Insurance System (EIS) from January to July 17, said Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar. He said of the total, 17,432 applications were approved involving RM91.55 million in EIS benefit payments, which among others involved the categories of Job Search Allowance, Reduced Income Allowance and Re-employment Allowance. “The EIS is to protect the welfare of workers before layoffs happen. Through this intervention, their income will continue. “This scheme is important, but many do not know about it. Socso’s role is broad, and is not focused only on assistance schemes for workers who are injured. If workers contribute to EIS, they can benefit from various types of assistance.” Earlier, Sivakumar presented job search allowances to 30 former factory operators of two companies in Negeri Sembilan. He added that the benefits are channelled for three to six consecutive months if they are sacked due to economic problems faced by the companies. – Bernama Ministry receives 7,000 trade complaints KOTA BHARU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has received a total of 7,027 consumer complaints, of which 5,025 were through the Aduan Suri programme nationwide from Jan 12 to June 20. 3 NEWS WITHOUT BORDERS theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 ALOR SETAR: Farmers in Kedah have expressed confidence in the efforts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government, primarily for its commitment to eradicating hardcore poverty in the country. The farmers view agriculture as a sector that enables them to increase family income and rise out of poverty, with the support and assistance from the government, Bernama reported. Khairul Anuar Hanafi, 36, a maize farmer in Kampung Kepala Bukit near Jitra, said government assistance is critical in helping farmers improve their standard of living. “I started this corn plantation on approximately two relong of land. With help from the government, I now have a little over six relong of corn farm,” he said. In April, the media reported that Anwar was determined to eradicate hardcore poverty, which is still plaguing certain groups of people in the country. Khairul Anuar said he now has about 45,000 corn plants and could save money, in contrast to when he was a mechanic. He also plans to increase his income by diversifying into planting brinjals at other locations. He said he received aid in the form of fertilisers, pesticides and pipes for irrigation infrastructure from the Agriculture Department and is now waiting for water pump motors and pipes, which he applied for from the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada). Meanwhile, Mohammad Hafidz Ismail, 39, a padi farmer from Kampung Teluk Tawar near Yan, said his standard of living has improved significantly, with up to an 80% increase in income after going into agriculture full-time. “I used to only work for wages on other people’s padi fields. Then, I became interested in having a padi field and I started with two relong of land at first,” he said, adding that he now cultivates 41 relong of padi fields. He attributed his success to the support and guidance from Mada on the efficient management of padi fields with subsidised fertiliser and pesticides. “I welcome the government’s efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty in our country and if we get into agriculture 100%, I believe we can climb out of poverty,” he said. He also welcomed the government’s initiative to cultivate five seasons of padi within two years as it would increase the income of small scale padi farmers. “I started right at the bottom, I know how hard it is to be a farmer. That is why new farmers need the government’s help.” Mada general manager Kamarudin Dahuli said it is serious in its commitment to help improve the standard of living of the poor in its area of administration, in line with the prime minister’s aspirations. “We have a list of poor individuals. Based on the names identified, we have plans to conduct various programmes such as those under the Economy Ministry, to benefit these target groups,” he said. Kamarudin added that Mada will also highlight the success of farmers categorised as padi entrepreneurs in Kedah such as Mohammad Hafidz, to act as mentors to the poor and to inspire others to follow suit. Sarawak on track to achieve 3m visitor target SIBU: The performance of Sarawak’s tourism industry has begun to show encouraging development and is expected to reach the target of attracting three million visitors to the state by the end of the year. Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the number of tourist arrivals to the state this year would be able to approach the arrival figures in 2018 and 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the ministry’s statistics, a total of 4.43 million visitors were recorded in Sarawak in 2018 and 4.66 million in 2019. Between January and June this year, a total of 1.96 million were recorded. “The number of tourists arriving from within the country and abroad to Sarawak will continue to increase due to many national and international events taking place in Kuching and other parts of the state until the end of this year,” he said when speaking on behalf of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg during the closing ceremony of the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang on Sunday night. BCF is one of the annual events listed in the Sarawak tourism calendar, organised by the Sibu Municipal Council in July every year since 2003. This year, the festival showcased cultural performances, food and handicrafts from Sarawak, Sabah, Indonesia, China and Thailand. Abdul Karim said the national-level International Museum Day celebrations from July 31 to Aug 6, the Asean International Film Festival (Aug 2 to 4), in addition to the Sarawak Regatta and the Dragon Boat Race in October are expected to attract thousands of visitors to the state. He added that Sibu could be promoted as an eco-tourism centre, with the Sibu-Kapit road connecting the city to the interior areas of the state, which opens up a lot of new tourism potential to be developed in the central areas. – Bernama Farmers express belief in efforts to quash poverty oMany view agriculture sector as path to increase family income, with support and assistance from govt ‘PH-BN should not underestimate challenges in polls’ KUALA LUMPUR: The challenges that await Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the upcoming state elections in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu should not be underestimated by anyone, said BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He said although there is confidence in retaining the states currently under PH, namely Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan through BN’s cooperation, today’s political dynamics demand that all parties work hard to ensure victory. Using the analogy of a football match that features different strategies for different matches, Mohamad, who is also Umno deputy president, said the same thing also happens in politics. “During the 15th general election, the approach and strategy were different, and in the six state elections, we need yet another different approach because the challenges are also different. “In Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan, we may not have a problem retaining power. In Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, however, although we have a chance to win, we have to work harder to succeed or at least increase the number of our seats there,” he said. Mohamad also called on all parties to campaign maturely and avoid engaging in unhealthy politics throughout the campaign period. “If during the campaign we keep exposing all our weaknesses, it is feared that potential foreign investors would become hesitant (to invest). We need those investments to create more job opportunities and help boost the country’s economy,” he said. Mohamad, who will be fielded as BN candidate for his Rantau seat in Negeri Sembilan, said the fact that he was the elected representative for the Rantau constituency for four terms since 2004 does not mean he could take it easy and be comfortable. “Each election has its challenges, I cannot take it lightly. I still have to work hard to ensure victory,” said the former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar. The Election Commission has set the state elections in the six states to be held simultaneously, with the Kuala Terengganu polls on Aug 12, nomination set on July 29 and early voting on Aug 8. – Bernama Time to demand change: PKR leader MACHANG: People in Kelantan need to rise and demand change during the upcoming state elections to ensure their requests, especially regarding necessities, are fulfilled. Kelantan and Terengganu PKR leadership council chairman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the state government is seen as not being able to deliver and solve the problems of its citizens. “The central government has stated its stand of wanting to help Kelantan develop better. “We have started many projects, including a flood mitigation project to tackle the longstanding flooding issue in Tumpat,” he said in his speech at the Madani Unity roadshow and Kelantan unity machinery launch near Bukit Tiu on Sunday night. It is appealing for public donations in the hope of raising at least RM300,000 for a year’s expenditures. Peace Children’s Care Centre (PCCC), which is located in Kampung Sungai Nibong in Gelugor, is an initiative by Persatuan Kebajikan Asas Pulau Pinang (PKAPP) – a group of entrepreneurs and volunteers. It also serves the wider community through outreach programmes, cultural activities and welfare aid. PCCC chairman Alagesan Ayaru said the NGO was formed in 2020 as a call to action to assist abused and neglected children. “There are many cases of children being abused or neglected in Penang, which is the main reason PCCC was formed. PCCC is also committed to providing them with guidance throughout their youth until they complete their tertiary education. PCCC also provides wheelchairs, medical kits and other items to disabled children in the area, such as those suffering from cancer, cerebral palsy and blindness. Currently, it looks after 14 children aged between six and 17, who were referred to them by the public, Social Welfare Department, police and other NGOs. “It’s a challenge to handle children with varying backgrounds. But seeing them grow and improve makes all our efforts worthwhile. We care for them like our own children,” Alagesan said. He added that as an organisation that opened during the lockdown in 2020, PCCC struggled initially. “We received lots of calls for help, but we could do little as the movement control order was in force. We were also short of funds. But somehow, we managed to assist them with the help of our donors.” Alagesan said the B40 community was very badly affected during the pandemic as people were stuck at home without any income. “They needed medical care, while some of the elderly folk even went without food for a spell as their children were stuck elsewhere. We rushed to help them as cases were brought to our attention. “We depend on public donations and sponsorships to cover rental, utilities, salaries and food. We also need to raise funds for transportation, tuition, medical care and other general expenditure. “Our financial position is currently quite bad and we need funds to sustain our activities. In the longterm, we also wish to purchase our own building and new vehicles.” All the children attend regular government schools or kindergartens while tuition teachers are brought to the centre to further support their learning. “On weekends and holidays, we organise outdoor and religious activities for them. Sometimes, we also get invitations from the state government, NGOs and private sector companies to attend their events,” Alagesan said. The PCCC team consists of volunteers, unpaid board members and paid staff. However, it needs more volunteers, especially those who specialise in education and child development. Volunteers are also needed to help with its community outreach activities, such as visiting the ill and elderly as well as supplying them with groceries and other essentials. Monthly operational expenses are about RM20,000, with RM10,000 of that being used to pay salaries and RM3,300 for rental. Those to wish to assist PCCC financially may deposit funds directly into its CIMB account No. 8010 452 397.

Local authorities closed beaches in the area “to ensure the safety of our community”, while state authorities called on people to report shark sightings. According to The West Australian newspaper, the victim was helped by a nurse after he managed to reach a nearby cafe. – AFP TAIWAN HOLDS EVACUATION DRILL TAIPEI: Cities across northern Taiwan ordered cars off roads and people to stay indoors yesterday for an annual air-raid exercise as the island steps up preparations in the event of a Chinese attack, amid threats from Beijing. Sirens sounded at 1.30pm for the mandatory street evacuation drills, which effectively shut towns and cities, including its capital Taipei for 30 minutes. An “air raid alert”, asking people to evacuate to safety immediately, was sent via text message. “When you receive the text message, please be aware of the wordings such as ‘test’ and ‘drill’ and stay calm,” President Tsai Ing-wen said on Facebook. – Reuters Cambodian heir apparent hails poll victory PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s heir apparent insisted yesterday on the legitimacy of elections his party won against no meaningful opposition, defying international criticism that the polls were neither free nor fair. Hun Sen has presided over Cambodia for nearly 40 years – stifling all real opposition, freedom of speech and democratic reform – but has indicated recently that he will soon hand power to his eldest son Hun Manet. The United States on Monday condemned the polls, in which the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) is predicted to win all but five of 125 parliamentary seats in the lower house. But Hun Manet posted a triumphant message across multiple social media platforms hailing his party’s victory. “The Cambodian people have clearly expressed their wills through votes,” he wrote. “An overwhelming number have expressed support for the Cambodian People’s Party.” He thanked Cambodians “for choosing to vote, and especially for all the love and confidence in the CPP”. Official results will not be available for weeks, although the CPP claimed on Sunday night to have won a “landslide” victory. oUS says elections ‘neither free nor fair’, prepares to impose penalties The small government-aligned royalist Funcinpec party, headed by Prince Norodom Chakravuth, is expected to take five seats – giving the new parliament at least a patina of diversity after the CPP won every seat in the last election. The disqualification of the only viable opposition force, the Candlelight Party, on a technicality, meant there was no realistic outcome other than a big CPP win. The US said the elections were “neither free nor fair”, pointing to “a pattern of threats and harassment against the political opposition, media, and civil society”. “These actions denied the Cambodian people a voice and a choice in determining the future of their country,” US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement yesterday. Authorities said the illegal stacking of materials on the roof may have caused it to cave in, Xinhua news agency reported. Initially, 15 people were trapped underneath the rubble and state media learned at 10am that authorities had pulled out the last person buried beneath, a student, who showed no vital signs. The collapse at the No. 34 Middle School in Longsha District in Qiqihar, located in northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, was reported at 2.56pm on Sunday, according to the provincial fire and rescue department. A female volleyball team was training in the gymnasium at the time, a man told China Youth Daily as he waited anxiously at the local hospital for news of his 16-year-old daughter. The students “had just returned to the school a few days ago after a competition out-of-town”, an eyewitness told state radio. It was not immediately clear if any victims were adults, but state radio reported on Sunday that the coach of the team was buried underneath the rubble. There were 19 people at the gymnasium when the incident occurred, with four managing to escape, said authorities. In a video that went viral on social media, an angry and distressed father said the government sent police to keep watch on parents but did not send anyone to update them about their children. “They tell me my daughter is gone but we never got to see the child. All the children had their faces covered with mud and blood when they were sent to the hospital. I pleaded, please let me identify the child. What if, that wasn’t my child?” The region and several parts of China had heavy rain over the weekend, causing flooding and damage in some areas. A preliminary investigation found that construction workers illegally placed perlite, a mineral with high water content and which can absorb water, on the roof of the gymnasium during construction of a teaching building adjacent to the gymnasium, Xinhua reported. Under persistent rains, the perlite soaked up water and gained weight, resulting in the roof collapse. An investigation is ongoing and individuals in charge of the construction company have been taken into police custody, Xinhua said. – Reuters restrictions on some individuals for undermining democracy, and halting some aid programmes. In the months running up to the national polls, freedom of speech was heavily stifled, with one of the few remaining independent news outlets, Voice of Democracy, shut down in February. Hun Sen also ordered election laws changed, banning anyone who fails to vote in the poll from ever running for office – a move that will affect exiled rivals. Authorities are investigating 27 people for inciting voters to spoil their ballots on polling day, said Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak. With no meaningful opposition, intentionally invalidating their ballot papers would have been one way for voters to show dissatisfaction with Hun Sen’s rule. – AFP PEOPLE POWER... The UN Command is a US-led multinational force that oversees the Korean War truce. The two Koreas remain technically at war because the 1950 to 1953 conflict ended in an armistice and not a peace treaty. “The primary concern for us is for Private King’s welfare,” Harrison said, adding that the incident was “still subject to investigation”. Under the armistice agreement, there was a mechanism allowing the UN Command to communicate with the North’s military in the Joint Security Area. “That process has started” but due to the “very delicate nature of these negotiations”, Harrison said he would not go into further detail. “There is someone’s welfare at stake and clearly we are in a very difficult and complex situation which I don’t want to risk by speculation or going into too much detail about the communications.” The US does not have formal diplomatic ties with the North and since North Korea closed its borders at the start of the pandemic, most embassies with a presence in Pyongyang have withdrawn their diplomats. – AFP JAKARTA: At least 15 people were killed yesterday after a wooden boat sank off the coast of Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, search and rescue officials said, adding that all missing passengers had been accounted for. The boat sank with 48 people onboard just after midnight (1am yesterday in Malaysia), the local office of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said in a statement. Six people were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment, it added, and the cause of the sinking was being investigated. Kendari city search and rescue agency chief Muhamad Arafah said the 27 other passengers had been accounted for and all the victims had been identified. The boat was crossing a bay between the villages of Lanto and Lagili on Muna island when it sank. Survivor Marlina, 18, told reporters the boat was “full” of passengers when it started to leak. “Initially, it was just normal but suddenly someone screamed that water had entered. “The boat driver said ‘it’s okay. Eventually, it just capsized because water filled the boat. We just fell in, there were no winds or waves.” – AFP
7 NEWS WITHOUT BORDERS theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 Evacuation flights head for Greece as tourists flee wildfires ATHENS: Wildfires burned across Greece yesterday, forcing people to be evacuated from a beach on the island of Corfu while tourists crowded an airport in Rhodes after thousands fled hotels and resorts at the weekend. Fires burning since Wednesday in Rhodes forced the evacuation of 19,000 people over the weekend as an inferno reached coastal resorts on the island’s southeastern coast. Rhodes and Corfu are among Greece’s top destinations for tourists, mainly from Britain and Germany. “We are in the seventh day of the fire and it hasn’t been controlled,” Rhodes deputy mayor Konstantinos Taraslias told state broadcaster ERT. Tourists spent the night on the airport floor, waiting for evacuation flights. “It was quite a bit of a struggle on the beach with the smoke,” said British tourist John Hope. Tour operators Jet2, TUI and Corendon cancelled flights leaving for Rhodes. Britain’s easyJet said on Sunday it was operating two evacuation flights from Rhodes to London’s Gatwick Airport in addition to the nine already operating between the island and Gatwick. The airline said it will add another flight today. Ryanair said on Sunday its flights to and from Rhodes were operating as normal. Its chief financial officer Neil Sorahan said the airline was monitoring the situation. “We have a lot of passengers there who want to get home. We’re not going to leave them behind so we’ll travel back in and out. “It’s not necessary at this period in time (to put in more flights), we’re letting people book onto earlier flights.” Evacuations by sea were also underway on Corfu, where about 59 people were evacuated from a beach on Sunday. Footage from the island showed the skyline coloured from fires in a mountain region. On Rhodes, some holidaymakers said they walked for miles in scorching heat to reach safety. The fires left blackened trees and dead animals lay on the roads near burnt-out cars. Temperatures over the past week have exceeded 40°C in many parts of the country and were forecast to persist in the coming days. Emergency services were also dealing with fires on the island of Evia, east of Athens, and Aigio, southwest of Athens. – Reuters Bangladesh hands Nobel Laureate US$1.1m tax bill DHAKA: Bangladesh’s top court ordered Nobel laureate and microfinance pioneer Muhammad Yunus to pay US$1.1 million (RM5 million) in taxes on a US$7 million donation made to three charitable trusts, lawyers said yesterday. Yunus, 83, is credited with lifting millions out of poverty with his pioneering micro-credit bank, but he has fallen out with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has said he is “sucking blood” from the poor. He was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work promoting economic development. “The Supreme Court dismissed our petition,” said his lawyer Sarder Jinnat Ali. The court, which upheld a decision by a lower court, ruled on Sunday that Yunus must pay as the law does not support tax exemptions for donations to trusts. Yunus had donated US$7 million to the Professor Muhammad Yunus Trust, the Yunus Family Trust and the Yunus Centre between 2011 and 2014. He has been credited with helping eradicate extreme poverty in Bangladesh by offering microfinance loans to tens of millions of rural women through Grameen Bank, which he founded in the 1980s. Bangladesh’s anti-graft watchdog last year ordered a wide-ranging probe into firms that Yunus chairs, and Hasina has attacked him personally, blaming him for the World Bank pulling out from a bridge project that was mired in corruption allegations. When the bridge near Dhaka finally opened in June last year, Hasina said Yunus should be “dipped in a river” for jeopardising its completion. – AFP B R I E F S62 ARRESTED IN HUMAN TRAFFICKING CRACKDOWN AMSTERDAM: Law enforcement teams from five countries have disrupted an intercontinental criminal network that was smuggling migrants from Cuba to the European Union, with the move leading to the arrest of 62 people, Europol and Interpol, who coordinated the international investigation, said yesterday. A Europol statement said the network focused on Cubans in vulnerable situations, and that for €9,000 (RM46,000), it would organise their journey to Europe and provide false documentation. In total, it is suspected that the network successfully smuggled around 5,000 Cuban nationals into the EU. Besides the arrests, police also seized 18 pieces of real estate, 33 vehicles, and 144 bank accounts, alongside vast sums of cash in various currencies. – Reuters SIX INMATES KILLED IN ECUADOR PRISON RIOT GUAYAQUIL: Rival gangs fought in a prison in Ecuador, killing at least six inmates in the latest riot to hit the troubled penal system, the government said on Sunday. Another 11 prisoners were injured in the new bout of violence in the Guayas 1 prison in the port city of Guayaquil from Saturday to Sunday, said the agency that runs the prison system. Mass killings featuring stunning levels of violence such as beheadings are common in the overcrowded Ecuadoran prison network. The riots pit gangs with links to drug traffickers against each other in the country that has emerged as a key player in the South American cocaine trade. – AFP New Zealand justice minister quits after car crash charges WELLINGTON: New Zealand’s justice minister resigned yesterday after being charged over a car crash, in a fresh set-back for the government ahead of general elections in October. Kiritapu “Kiri” Allan said her position was now “untenable” and she had told Prime Minister Chris Hipkins she was resigning from her position “immediately”. Allan was charged with careless use of a motor vehicle and refusing to accompany a police officer after the crash on Sunday night, the prime minister confirmed. Police also issued an infringement notice to Allan for returning an alcohol breath test that was over the limit, Hipkins said. She was briefly held in police custody after the crash. Further details about the collision were not immediately available. Allan is the fourth minister to leave Cabinet in Hipkins’ centre-left government since he replaced Jacinda Ardern as prime minister in January. New Zealand goes to the polls on Oct 14. Opinion polls this month put Hipkins’ Labour government just behind the centre-right opposition National Party. Hipkins told Allan that he did not believe she was in a fit state to be a minister. “It’s also untenable for a justice minister to be charged with criminal offending. “While her alleged actions are inexcusable, I’ve been advised she was experiencing extreme emotional distress at the time of the incident,” Hipkins said. – AFP Drones hit Moscow, ammo depot in Crimea MOSCOW: Ukrainian drones hit two buildings in Moscow and an ammunition depot in Russia-annexed Crimea yesterday as Ukraine reported another Russian strike on a grain facility. Russia said it had neutralised two Ukrainian drones over Moscow during the night with no casualties reported. One of the drones crashed close to the Defence Ministry in the centre of the Russian capital, while the other hit an office building in southern Moscow. The attacks came a day after Kyiv vowed to “retaliate” for a Russian missile attack on the Black Sea port of Odesa. AFP reporters at the scene of the strike near the ministry on Komsomolsky Prospekt saw a two-storey building with a damaged roof behind a police cordon. “I wasn’t asleep. It was 3.39am. The house really shook,” Vladimir, a 70-year-old local resident, told AFP about the moment of impact. “It is scandalous that a Ukrainian drone almost flew into the Defence Ministry,” said Vladimir, who declined to give his last name, as he took pictures at the scene. Polina, a 35-year-old manager out walking her dog, said her husband and child were woken by “a very loud noise right next to our house”. In Crimea, Moscow-installed governor Sergei Aksyonov said Russian forces shot down 11 Ukrainian drones. He said an ammunition depot was “hit” and a private house “damaged”, without providing further details. Aksyonov said villages near the depot were being evacuated. Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, has been targeted by Kyiv throughout Moscow’s Ukraine offensive but has come under more intense, increased attacks in recent weeks. Kyiv has repeatedly said it plans to take back Crimea. Meanwhile in southern Ukraine’s Odesa region, officials reported a four-hour Russian drone attack on port infrastructure on the Danube River. The Danube delta region, which spans across Romania and Ukraine, is being used as an export route for Ukrainian grain. Russia last week pulled out of a key deal which had allowed the safe export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. Russia will replace exports of Ukrainian grain to Africa, President Vladimir Putin said yesterday. “Russia will continue its energetic efforts to provide supplies of grain, food products, fertilisers and other goods to Africa,” he said in a statement published on the Kremlin’s website. “I want to give assurances that our country is capable of replacing the Ukrainian grain both on a commercial and free-of-charge basis.” After Russian strikes on Odesa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had vowed retaliation on Sunday. “They will definitely feel this.” A strike on the city on Sunday killed two people and severely damaged a historic cathedral. Clergymen rescued icons from rubble inside the badly damaged Transfiguration Cathedral, which was demolished under Stalin in 1936 and rebuilt in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian government condemned the cathedral strike as a “war crime”, saying it had been “destroyed twice, by Stalin and Putin”. – Reuters
8 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 SPEAK UP /thesuntelegram FOLLOW ON TELEGRAM SCAN ME Cackling crows on Capitol Hill CLUSTER munitions are banned in more than 100 countries. They are bombs that open in the air and release scores of smaller bomblets that can kill indiscriminately over a wide area. Those that fail to explode can pose a danger for decades. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told a daily White House briefing that officials “recognise that the cluster munitions from unexploded bombs create a risk of civilian harm”. But he said Ukraine was running out of artillery and needed “a bridge of supplies. We will not leave Ukraine defenceless at any point in this conflict period”. President Vladimir Putin said Russia had a “sufficient stockpile” of cluster bombs and reserved the right to use them if such munitions, the use of which he said he regarded as a crime, were deployed against Russian forces. Below is a parody of a phone conversation between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US President Joe Biden. June 20, 11am Washington time Blinken: Hello, Boss. Updating you on my Beijing trip. First of all. Great speech to our donors. Haha. Spot on calling Xi (China President Xi Jinping) a dictator and all that. Wonderful off the cuff and right on target. I like the way you handled the balloon incident. This should shut up the Republicans. We could have taken a bigger hit from it but to turn it into something that Xi was not aware of is absolutely brilliant. One for the history books. Biden: Good to hear, Blinky. Thanks. Yes, I see my speech was headline news all over the world, CNN, BBC. The media thought I was blowing my trumpet when I said that I was better than Kissinger (former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger). Now they know me as the real chump, sorry, I mean, champ in foreign affairs. They don’t call me “Amtrak Joe” for nothing. (Writer: I am going to say something outrageous. I think I know as much about American foreign policy as anybody living, including Dr Kissinger.) Blinken: We make a great pair, Boss. Boy, did I fool the two Chinese with my charm and got them to avoid saying any nasty things about us. I also wrangled a meeting with Xi. Very difficult and last minute. China media are saying “quite unprecedented” and a “big my son and Fox and other s** will never let him get away with it. B*****ds Blinken: Sorry to drop this on you now, Boss, but to let you know I have been able to make up for you missing meeting the Islanders in Papua New Guinea. We have promised to bring them over for a meeting in (Washington) DC. First class ticket for them and family will make sure every one of the island leaders will want to be with you. Did you see that I got the Papuans to give our military unimpeded access to their bases, so as to squeeze the Chinese even more? It was actually done quite cheaply. Bought them some new uniforms and PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment). Must say, some cargo and flattery make a big difference – an easy lot to get on our side. Biden: Well done, Blinky. Remind me to call (James) Marape (prime minister of Papua New Guinea). I will let him know how we together will make a big difference to the Indo-Pacific. Also, must mention that Modi and Albo (Anthony Albanese, prime minister of Australia) are doing their bit. We must bring Fumio (Kishida) and Japan in the picture more, Blinky. Blinken: Agreed boss. My staff tell me that Albo is pissed off that I telephoned Japan and South Korean counterparts before my Beijing trip but not them. Biden: Mistake, Blinky. You know how hard I worked to get the Aussies to buy our subs (submarines). I tell you, this was a real challenge. I was lucky we had Scott (Morrison) on our side. Amazing job he did. We must see how we can help him now he has done his bit. Blinken: Yup. Remember Trump already gave him our Merit of Honour but I think he is looking forward to something he can put into his pocket rather than wear on his chest. Biden: Okay. That should be easy to set up. Blinken: Thanks, Boss. Also, the papers are digging up that Evan and I were working with Hunter on behalf of Burisma (Holdings). I have sent him a copy of my sworn and other statements. Please see that he denies any association I may have. Biden: Will do, Blinky. Quick final. Tell Zed (Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine) and his boys not to say that they are making slow progress. Hell, after all the equipment and money I have given for them to win, this is a dumb thing to put out. Makes us look bad and really, there is no need to bring in “Hollywood” in his statement. They have to keep saying that they are winning. Blinken: Okay, Boss. But my staff are telling me that they will need more of our heavy stuff as well as money. Putin is not the pushover we have been making him out to be. Maybe, we should provide Zed with cluster bombs. Not popular with the media but should give Putin a bloody nose. Biden: Good idea. Pass the word around, but do it quick. Note: This conversation apparently is from a recently hacked recording and disseminated by an unknown but suspected Russian group. You must have seen it too. The photo is sitting in our main reception in the house. Evan (Ryan) absolutely loves it, so also the children. Biden: Good. Remind me when I meet Xi next that he sits at the head of the table with me on the right side. Maybe, include Jill (Biden) in the photo too. And before I forget, Karine (Jean-Pierre, White House Press Secretary) needs to bring up the dictator bit on Xi and China every now and then when (Donald) Trump or Rinos (Republican party) say I am too soft. Also, remind me to give her my promise of a reward soon – a bigger job. She is a good (woman) and our coloured friends and the LGBTs (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) will see how I take good care of them. They will love to see me doing more for the coloured – this should bring in a helluva lot more votes. Blinken: By the way, Boss, your mention of (Narendra) Modi and the QUAD was brilliant too – an off-the-park home run. This will tie Modi and India to us even more. Indian media is headlining his visit and your appearances together. They cannot wait for it to take place. Biden: I know. You know, Kamala (Harris, US vice president) has been disappointing. You tell her that I would love a Bollywood song and dance on how Modi and I are fighting the panda and breaking down the China wall. Include me doing an Irish jig. Tell her to put in some money as soon as possible so this can appear on the screen quickly. Hunter (Biden) would love this assignment. He is the best in this kinda business. But he is
9 SPEAK UP theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 Kudos to PM for advancing Tamil language ON July 22, Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim inaugurated the 11th International Tamil Research Conference at Dewan Tunku Chancellor, Universiti Malaya. His presence and speech proved to be the much-awaited and inspiring message for Tamil scholars, teachers and secondary school students in Malaysia. The lack of Tamil classes in secondary schools has been an ongoing issue, typically requiring a minimum of 15 students to be viable. However, the PM’s announcement emphasising that this restriction should not apply came as a surprise to many. He advocated for the provision of equal opportunities and freedom for all students, even though Bahasa Malaysia is the official language and English being promoted for international communication. He also noted that Chinese and Indian students must be granted the right to study their respective languages as stipulated in the Federal Constitution. Additionally, the PM emphasised the importance of Malaysians being proficient in more than two languages, asserting that learning an additional language would enhance their competence in the new era. Furthermore, he revealed a budget allocation of RM2 million for the Indian Studies Department at Universiti Malaya to support research efforts on the Tamil language and Indian culture. The PM also lauded Thiruvalluvar, the esteemed scholar renowned for his composition of Thirukkural, a profound book encompassing 1,330 couplets on life’s wisdom. He quoted a couplet from Thirukkural, exemplifying the idea of unity among Malaysians, emphasising that we are one nation with a common nationality. K. Panneerselvam Kuala Lumpur Will you walk the line on AI-generated music? “HELLO, I’m not Johnny Cash.” This is the uncanny opening of one of the latest AI- (Artificial Intelligence) generated music “covers” to go viral across social media. In this instance, Cash’s iconic baritone is repurposed to sing Aqua’s 1997 dance-pop hit, Barbie Girl. Wade a little further into the world of AI music and you may also encounter Frank Sinatra crooning Gangsta’s Paradise or Elvis swinging his way through Baby Got Back. There is no denying that these so-called covers have comedy value. And to my inexpert ear, they sound almost indistinguishable from the artistes they imitate. Still, as with perhaps all things AI, the broader implications are not so cheery. The whiplash speed of AI development already feels like the defining feature of 2023. Staying abreast of the technology’s latest advancements is a futile pursuit, while the material impact of AI is beginning to touch normal people. It is an unsettling feeling, watching in realtime as governments scramble to manage something which feels less like tech and more like magic. For musicians, AI is the biggest and baddest in a long line of disruptors. As it stands, artistes are already poorly remunerated by streaming platforms. Spotify even offers artistes greater exposure via its “discovery mode” in return for a slashed royalty rate. Then there is TikTok. The continuous demand for content has positioned earworm song fragments above, well, actual songs. The result is an increasing quantity of music which, as Mitch Therieau recently put it, exists primarily as “audio furniture for viral videos”. What is truly scary is that AI has the scope to overshadow every one of these issues. After all, it is not just deceased music legends who are being puppeteered by AI, but living, breathing artistes. A particularly pivotal moment came last April when a fake Drake track went viral. Released by an anonymous TikTok user, the song Heart on My Sleeve featured AI-generated lyrics, with vocals styled to sound like Drake and The Weeknd. The song was eventually pulled at the request of Universal Music Group, but not before racking up 15 million views on TikTok. It certainly sheds some light on what may be to come. At once opening up the potentially messy world of copyright implications, while also proving that there is an appetite for AI music. Forget emaciated royalty fees – streamers can soon forgo humans altogether, machines being famously less fussy about artistic and financial credit. It is fitting enough, then, that the Grammys have recently amended their rulebook to accommodate these shifting sands. The organisation’s new requirements make clear that “only human creators” can receive award nominations. However, that does nothing to prevent AI from being used on eligible tracks, merely banning songs which are devoid of any human authorship. It is probably small-minded to suggest that there is no facet of AI, which may be creatively used as part of some broader musical endeavour. What concerns me is the treachery of this particular capitalist slope. Can we trust big studio executives to stay loyal to not only music artistes but the countless people who make the creation of an album possible? Humans are messy and capricious. Artistes, especially so. They need time and space to make music. Worse still, they have wills and opinions. What if they do not want to keep cruising down whichever algorithmically approved stream promises the greatest financial dividends? Of course, in breadth, this is a conversation which spans the entirety of the arts sector. The lack of AI regulation is one of many reasons the Writers Guild of America is currently on strike. Visual artistes are in an arms race over increasingly sophisticated tools that help them to stay one step ahead of plundering AI systems. The fight between data-hungry AI programmers and artistes looking to retain their intellectual property rages on. What often gets lost in this furore is the very reason art exists in the first place. It is so much more than some amusement to pass our mortal hours, but a direct response to the conscious experience – the very strangeness of being alive. Something that AI, having no personhood, cannot speak to. Putting aside the legal and ethical implications of dredging up the voices of longdead artistes, do we want to tune into songs that have no emotional grounding in actual experience? Or hear voices technologically detached from the silk and grit of real human vocal cords? Music is a genuine force in our lives, a universal art form which can be found in almost every human culture and time period. Cash drawling about life in plastic may be an amusing gimmick but to pick AI over real artistes is a line I am not willing to walk. – The Independent Tribute to a perfect gentleman UNFORTUNATELY, at a time when global and Malaysian politics are wracked with unnecessary polemics, even vitriol, the passing of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub (pic), affectionately known as “Pakcik Salahuddin” to many (although we addressed each other as bro), serves as a timely reminder of what decency, kindness and thoughtfulness mean. For lack of a better word, Allaryaham Salahuddin personified all the aforementioned virtues and more. While Masyarakat Madani, otherwise translated as enlightened society in various vernaculars in Malaysia, was the leading theme of the country between January to June, it was Salahuddin who spurred the Rahmah initiative. Driven by his staunch belief in sheer compassion, the initiative aimed to defuse the rising cost of food, fuel, fertilisers and animal feed, all of which were triggered by external events, such as the Pan Slavic War between Ukraine and Russia on Feb 24, 2022. The Rahmah Menu, offering a variety of food accompanied by a simple drink all for less than RM5, spawned many entrepreneurs, no doubt inspired by the fine example of Salahuddin, the Domestic Trade and Costs of Living minister, who introduced several other inspiring initiatives as well. In more ways than one, the accomplishments gave Masyarakat Madani a strong traction, and that the new administration or unity government was not one to trifle with. The super majority of two-thirds gained through the assiduous efforts of various component parties to form a grand coalition was something worthy of the best spirit of Malaysia and all cultures. Those who have had the privilege of serving alongside and working with Salahuddin, be it during his tenure as Agriculture minister or Domestic Trade and Costs of Living minister, can attest to the unmistakable presence of a genteel and gentle aura that surrounded him. Even his top officers, with Ahmad Sabki Yusof being the foremost among them, now the Registry of Companies chair, exuded a sense of calm and genuine conscientiousness. This was the remarkable spirit that Salahuddin infused into two of the highest ministries in Malaysia. Whether in the Parliament hansards or the State Assembly records of Johor, the state from which Salahuddin hails, one would not find a single instance of terse or coarse language. None whatsoever. Salahuddin was always on the pulse of the nation and the issues. Former Malaysian Ambassador to China Datuk Raja Nurshiwan, currently the National Security Council director-general, holds nothing but the highest praise for Salahuddin. When tasked to promote the “Musang King” in China, Salahuddin remained focused on ensuring that the King of Fruits in Malaysia would receive the utmost appeal and promotion, both in China and domestically. When Salahuddin was helming the Agriculture Ministry, he concurred with Emir Research on the importance of pursuing a holistic food security policy and had many constructive engagements. Salahuddin embraced five core thrusts that were important for the people: 1. Mitigating the costs of living 2. Affordable and quality healthcare 3. Affordable and quality education 4. Dignified employment 5. Affordable and quality housing Hence, his Rahmah initiatives have benefitted many. More remarkably, soon after the historic victory of May 9, 2018, Salahuddin appeared on air on RTM One and openly declared that he would remain unchanged and accessible to all, whether in power or not. True to his word, he continued to uphold these principles. He diligently responded to all his messages, as do his officers. Malaysia not only lost a distinguished gentleman of the highest calibre but also a minister of extraordinary pedigree. Salahuddin’s mother is a Chinese married to a Johorean, and she remained steadfast in being true to her life and beliefs. This, in turn, led to her raising the best son, who was called to God on July 23. Indeed, there are only a few good men left in the realm of politics, and Salahuddin has left us too soon. 10 HEALTH & WELLNESS theSun LYFE ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 MANY music fans have experienced the sensation of leaving a concert feeling as if they had run a marathon. Singing at the top of your lungs and dancing to your favourite artist’s songs can quickly work up a sweat. However, some singers may make us sweat more than others when they perform on stage. The PureGym sports club network calculated how physically challenging attending a live event by one of the world’s top 30 music stars would be. The organisation estimated the duration and BPM (beats per minute) of each song using the repertoire of songs performed by these performers during their most recent gigs. This allowed the firm to award a theoretical “exhaustion score” to each of the 30 musicians chosen for the study. Taylor Swift wins with a score of 91 out of 100 for exhaustion. On her sixth and most recent world tour, “The Eras Tour,“ which began in the United States in March, the American singer’s concerts lasted an average of 2 hours and 57 minutes. The setlist she performs has an average pace of 122 beats per minute. If a fan attending one of these concerts danced to the beat of the music without s t o p p i n g , they would quickly run out of breath. Bad Bunny, the Latino trap legend, and the British band The Cure came in second and third place, with ratings of 89 and 88 out of 100, respectively. Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican musician, has the longest shows in the study, with an average duration of 3 hours for performances on his latest world tour, dubbed “The World’s Hottest Tour.” Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, and 50 Cent are also famous for their frenetic concerts, which can be a terrific workout due to their length and intensity. Muse’s recent performances, on the other hand, received an exhaustion score of 70 out of 100, one point less than Drake and Paul McCartney’s shows, which rank with Muse at the bottom of the pack. Going to a concert is still a wonderful kind of exercise, especially if you’re dancing or moving about the entire time. Dancing, in reality, engages many of the body’s muscles, which is why it is increasingly being included in training routines. Several studies have shown that dancing can be just as effective, if not more so, burning calories as certain sports.. According to University of Brighton researchers, dancing for 30 minutes can burn 300 calories. That is equivalent to jogging, swimming, or cycling. All the more reason to get up and dance the next time you go to a show. Live music can be engaging for everyone, including babies THESE devices enabled them to observe that the infants seemed much more interested in the live performance than in its recording. As the opera unfolded before their eyes over a period of 12 minutes, their attention was retained for 72% of the time, compared with 54% for the video recording. What’s more, the babies stayed focused longer when watching the live opera than when watching the recorded version. This indicates that they were significantly more engaged when watching live music, according to Laura Cirelli, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at UTSC and co-author of the study, published in the journal Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts. “Even little babies who may or may not have experienced music in a community context before are already engaging more when it’s delivered this way,“ Cirelli says. “That’s one question we have as music cognition researchers: What is it about the live experience that’s worth it? Why would people go if there’s not something fundamental about that live music experience that’s above and beyond listening to music by yourself?” the researcher said in a statement. A beneficial collective experience If live music seems to fascinate babies, this doesn’t mean that opera and other concert recordings don’t interest them. They just stimulate them in a different way. Attending a musical performance is a collective experience during which the audience becomes a “rhythmic mass,“ in the words of the writer and essayist Elias Canetti. As such, all those present are moving in phase with the beat of the music and becoming one. These moments of togetherness can be experienced at any age. In fact, the UTSC scientists noted that the babies had similar reactions to certain operatic passages: they can be very calm and silent before all becoming animated when they hear a change of key or a note that attracts their attention. “Their heart rates were speeding up and slowing down in a similar fashion to other babies watching the show,“ explains Laura Cirelli. This study shows just how effective music can be as a cognitive stimulant for young children. Previous research, published in 2019 in the journal PNAS, showed that listening to musical melodies can improve brain maturation in premature babies. All the more reason for parents to encourage their children to listen to music from an early age. Concerts can be a terrific workout because of their length and intensity. Even the youngest children can be as fascinated by live musical performances as adults. Tired of going to the gym? Attend a concert instead

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the significant contribution demonstrated the industry’s pivotal role in fostering the growth of the digital economy and the development of robust ecosystems. “The presence of the C&M industry within Bursa Malaysia signifies its importance as a driving force behind technological advancements and digital transformation. “Through the facilitation of efficient communication channels and multimedia platforms, this industry serves as a catalyst for various sectors to harness the power of connectivity and innovation,” he said in his speech read out by Communications and Digital Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa at the launch of the Converged Telecommunications Policy and Regulations (CTPR) 2023 Master Class yesterday. Touching on the CTPR Master Class, Fahmi said the programme brings important discussions on Converged Policy and Collaborative Regulations, Spectrum Management, Emerging Technologies and Networks, Digital Business and Economics as well as Smart Digital Nations, Cities and Communities. The presence of the C&M industry within Bursa Malaysia signifies its importance as a driving force behind technological advancements and digital transformation. – AFPPIX M’sia on track to become EV powerhouse in SE Asia KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is on the right path to become an electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse in Southeast Asia with the government aggressively promoting a conducive EV ecosystem, supported by strong business commitment shown by two world-renowned automotive companies, Geely and Tesla. Malaysian Automotive Association president Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain said the entry of China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co or simply Geely, and USheadquartered Tesla Inc into the Malaysian market serves as a clear indication of the country’s relevance in the regional automotive landscape. He said the two automakers, with their vast global experience and access to leading technologies, could introduce new ideas and ways of doing businesses to the local automotive sector, such as high-tech research and development (R&D) in new products that might not be currently available in the country. oEntry of Geely and Tesla serves clear indication of country’s relevance in regional automotive landscape: MAA president “For example, electrification means a change in vehicle components, with more focus given to battery manufacturing and other specialised components for EVs. “We would also see the industry adopting new skillsets and infrastructure suited to varying degrees of electrification – from mild hybrids to fully electric vehicles – besides reskilling or upskilling the automotive workforce, whilst opening up new opportunities for innovation, R&D and high-value manufacturing of components,” he told Bernama. He added that with the right government support, infrastructure and policies in place, Malaysia is well positioned to be a regional hub supporting the global growth of EVs given its strategic positioning and favourable economic conditions. Malaysia is a major electrical and electronics manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia; therefore, he said, automakers and automotive investors can seamlessly leverage on this capacity to secure their supply chains for growing their production of next-generation vehicles. The components sub-sector can be capitalised on to service the whole automotive value chain, covering semiconductors, sensors, automotive electronics, transceivers, batteries, and vehicle assembly. Mohd Shamsor said with more than 40 brands in the domestic market currently, the entry of new players would undoubtedly add greater excitement to the market and generate more interest among consumers. Besides, it would also create a buyer’s market by providing more choices and increasing competitiveness, keeping all automotive players on their toes and resulting in better services and offerings for consumers. “Malaysia may be new to the EV industry, but with the solid support of the current government and progressive national policies coupled with fast-growing consumer uptake, we foresee rapid holistic growth in our local EV market. “New players in the EV space will lead to greater competition, which in turn will spur more investments from automotive players and improvements in the quality of products and services offered,” he pointed out. Additionally, Mohd Shamsor said, with more EVs, including the completely knocked down models, coming into the country, there would also be new business opportunities for the vendors. He added Malaysia has a healthy domestic automotive market that promises growth prospects in terms of sales, while its industrial track record in the same sector strategically positions the country as a potential regional hub for production and assembly of new vehicle types. Malaysia is targeting to have 15% of total industry volume (TIV) contributed by electrified vehicles – EV and hybrid – by 2030, and 38% of TIV by 2040. “These areas are paramount in shaping the landscape of national as well as international telecommunications law and policy,” he said, adding that he hoped the participants would obtain the right skills, competencies and new knowledge to equip and upskill themselves with these inevitable changes. Fahmi also said that the CTPR Master Class is a professional programme which is rewarding for lifelong learners as it offers a credit transfer of up to 30% under the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning for Credit Award (C) scheme in pursuit of a Master in Converged Telecommunications Policy and Regulations at Multimedia University. Meanwhile, MMU president and CEO Prof Datuk Dr Mazliham Su’ud said the CTPR Master Class is a collaborative effort between the university, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Global System for Mobile Communications Association of London. He said the professional programme is curated for senior executives and professionals in national regulatory agencies, relevant government ministries and related service providers, and was first held physically after the lifting of the movement control order. – Bernama 13.16 407.11 3.58 Participation 30.5 45.1 24.4 100.0 Retail Institutions Foreign Bought RM m 526.1 832.4 425.9 1784.4 Sold RM m 561.5 778.5 444.4 1784.4 Net RM m -35.4 53.9 -18.5 0 % Preliminary stats (excluding trade amendments). 12 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 SUNBIZ READ OUR HERE /thesundaily SCAN ME Petronas aims to expand SAF supply to international airlines KUALA LUMPUR: National oil firm Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is looking to expand its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply to international airlines, said executive vice-president of downstream Datuk Sazali Hamzah. In May this year, its subsidiary Petronas Dagangan Bhd signed an SAF offtake agreement with Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, as part of efforts to develop the green fuel on a commercial scale in Malaysia. “(We are looking for) international airlines as well. SAF is not only for Malaysia but also Europe because they are willing to pay higher,” Sazali told Bernama on the sidelines of a recent media trip to the MercedesPetronas Dagangan will supply more than 230,000 tonnes of SAF to Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and MASwings - with the first delivery expected from 2027 at KLIA. – BERNAMAPIX oNational oil company has Europe on its radar as carriers are willing to pay more for green fuel AMG Petronas F1 Team headquarters in Brackley, England. However, he did not elaborate on the plan. Under the agreement with MAG, Petronas Dagangan will supply more than 230,000 tonnes of SAF to MAG’s airlines – national carrier Malaysia Airlines, and Firefly and MASwings – with the first delivery expected from 2027 at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. During its annual general meeting in Istanbul in June, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced its expectation for overall renewable fuel production to reach an estimated capacity of at least 69 billion litres (55 million tonnes) by 2028. SAF will account for a portion of this growing output which is being achieved through new renewable fuel refineries and the expansion of existing facilities. Importantly, it noted, the expected production has a wide geographic footprint covering North America, Europe and AsiaPacific. However, IATA has called on airlines in Asia-Pacific to strengthen their readiness in the transition to the SAF mandate, aided by government policies and incentives to encourage the scaling up of SAF production. This is due to the development of the SAF mandate in Asia-Pacific is not progressing as fast as in other regions. IATA regional vice-president for Asia-Pacific Philip Goh said a wide range of countries in the region were at different levels of awareness. “Japan and Singapore are quite forward. In the case of Malaysia, we have been talking to the (Transport) Ministry about SAF and its policies. We are quite happy that a task force which is involved in SAF development and policies have invited IATA to join in as part of the discussion,” Goh told Bernama. He noted that the Asia-Pacific region needs to start building up SAF production. “It is going to take some years before we need material changes (such as) government policies that support more production of SAF and we are advocating that the government should introduce policies that will be friendly and incentivise its production. “It is not meaningful to impose mandates on anything when there is not enough supply,” he added. Putrajaya is encouraging more local airlines to use SAF to reduce the rate of carbon emissions in the country and in line with the efforts towards a low-carbon economy. This is in addition to meeting commitments under the mandatory phase of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation. Malaysian companies register US$38.4m potential sales at Semicon West 2023 KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian firms achieved potential sales worth US$38.4 million (RM175 million) at the Semicon West 2023, held in San Francisco, US recently, said the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade). 13 SUNBIZ theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 BMI: Maxis call on DNB stake a recognition of cost-effectiveness KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis Bhd’s decision to take up a stake in 5G network operator Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) signals industry players’ recognition of the platform’s cost-effectiveness with them having equal access rights, said BMI Country Risk and Industry Research. The Fitch Solutions company said all of the participating telecommunication companies seem to have recognised that it would be more cost-effective to pool their investments into a shared platform, in which all would have equal access rights, rather than for each of them to build separate networks and negotiate expensive interconnection agreements. “Rising inflation, which is likely to be weighing on their heavily leveraged existing mobile businesses, could well have forced the decision on all five operators,” it said in a note yesterday. Last Friday, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said CelcomDigi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia (TM), U Mobile and YTL Communications will be finalising the negotiations on share ownership in DNB and support the development of the 5G network until it reached 80% coverage in populated areas by the end of this year. BMI noted that the government’s move to open up the equity of the DNB to the operators means that they now have the ability to influence DNB’s commercial decision-making processes on vendor selection, infrastructure deployment timetables, and the setting of oParticipating telcos seem to see merit in pooling their investments into a shared platform for 5G, says Fitch arm Net foreign buying on Bursa enters second week, RM179m inflow PETALING JAYA: Net foreign buying of equities on Bursa Malaysia continued into a second week with inflow of RM179 million for the four trading days ended July 21, compared with RM570.9 million in the week prior, according to MIDF Research. In its weekly fund flow, the research house said foreign investors net bought RM56.3 million on Monday, RM71 million on Thursday and RM61.7 million on Friday but net sold RM10.1 million on Tuesday. The stock market was closed on Wednesday in conjunction with the Maal Hijrah public holiday. “The top three sectors which saw net inflows by foreign investors last week were utilities (RM107 million), technology (RM73.5 million) and construction (RM68.4 million). The bottom three sectors with net outflows were consumer products and services (RM103.1 million), financial services (RM35.8 million) and REITs (RM11.2 million). Year-todate, foreign investors have net sold RM3.70 billion,” it said in a statement yesterday. MIDF Research added that local institutions maintained their net selling stance for the second consecutive week, by RM91.3 million. They net bought RM9.8 million on Monday and RM2.8 million on Tuesday, before net selling RM49.0 million on Thursday and RM54.9 million on Friday. Year-to-date, local institutions have net bought RM3.53 billion. Local retailers, too, net sold for the second consecutive week – at RM87.7 million. They net bought RM7.2 million on Tuesday and net sold RM66.1 million on Monday, RM22.0 million on Thursday and RM6.8 million on Friday. They have net bought RM165.8 million year-to-date. In terms of participation, there was a decrease in average daily trading volume among foreign investors by 2.9%, while retail investors and local institutions saw increases of 6.8% and 17.4% respectively. The reserves position is sufficient to finance five months of imports of goods and services, and is one time the total short-term external debt, BNM said in a statement yesterday. The main components comprise foreign currencies at US$99.2 billion, IMF reserves position at US$1.4 billion, Special Drawing Rights at US$5.7 billion, gold at US$ 2.4 billion and other assets at US$3.1 billion. PETRONAS CARIGALI MAKES DISCOVERIES OFFSHORE S’WAK KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), has made six oil and gas discoveries in five blocks off the coast of Sarawak. The Gedombak well in Block SK306 and the Mirdanga well in Block SK411 (in Balingian province), the Sinsing well in Block SK313, the Machinchang and Pangkin wells in Block SK301B, and the Kalung Emas well in Block SK315 (in West Luconia province), stem from new and existing group of oil fields and exhibit low levels of contaminants. The discoveries were achieved on the back of an intensive exploration drilling campaign that began in late 2022. retail and wholesale tariffs. “Maxis’ reluctant agreement to join rivals TM, CelcomDigi, U Mobile and YTL in taking a position in DNB suggests that it sees no value in continuing to lobby the government to scrap the DNB scheme and instead allow operators to build their own 5G networks,” it said. BMI said it also suggests that Maxis either sees little value in joining a proposed second 5G network or does not believe that such a business would be commercially viable given its rivals’ backing of the original platform. BMI also suggested that the soon-to-beestablished second 5G platform could be repositioned as a carrier-neutral network to which smaller players and virtual service providers could sign up. “We currently forecast the number of Malaysian 5G connections to reach 33.8 million by 2032, representing 75.3% of the total mobile user base,” it added. – Bernama
14 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 SUNBIZ Indonesian firm said to be in talks to buy Australian fertiliser business SINGAPORE/SYDNEY: Indonesian state-owned fertiliser company PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur, or Pupuk Kaltim, is in talks to acquire the fertiliser business of Australian-listed Incitec Pivot Ltd, two sources familiar with the matter said. Pupuk Kaltim, which is Southeast Asia’s biggest urea fertiliser maker, has engaged Citi to advise on the potential acquisition, one of the sources said, declining to be named as the matter is private. Incitec Pivot commands a market value of A$5.73 billion (RM17.6 billion) as of yesterday. The Southbank, Victoriaheadquartered company produces and distributes fertilisers and explosives and employs more than 5,800 employees, according to its website. One analyst said the fertiliser business could be worth around US$1.2 billion (RM5.4 billion). Deliberations are still ongoing and no final decision has been made on the matter, the sources added. Incitec’s spokesperson told Reuters in response to a query yesterday that the company is not commenting beyond a statement it issued on July 12 saying it has “received a number of approaches for the potential acquisition of its fertilisers business”. Pupuk Kaltim and Citi declined to comment. The talks come as Pupuk Kaltim is on an expansion trail. The Kalimantanbased firm announced in March that it was planning to invest at least US$1 billion to increase capacity and set up a soda ash plant. It is also planning a domestic initial public offering which could raise about US$500 million, sources told Reuters in January. Pupuk Kaltim has 13 factories, including five ammonia plants with a capacity of 2.74 million tonnes a year and five urea factories producing 3.43 million tonnes per year, its website shows. – Reuters B R I E F STOP CHINESE LEADERS SAY ECONOMY FACING NEW DIFFICULTIES: STATE MEDIA BEIJING: China’s top leaders said the country’s economy was facing “new difficulties and challenges” in a meeting of the 24-person Politburo yesterday, state media reported. “The meeting pointed out that the current economic operation is facing new difficulties and challenges, mainly due to insufficient domestic demand, operational difficulties for some enterprises, high risks and hidden dangers in key areas, and a complex and severe external environment,” a readout of the meeting on state broadcaster CCTV said. Data from the HCOB Flash Eurozone Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) survey published by S&P Global fell to 48.9 in July from 49.9 in June. A figure above 50 indicates growth. “Manufacturing continues to be the Achilles heel of the eurozone. Producers have cut their output again at an accelerated pace in July,” said Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank. “The eurozone economy will likely move further into contraction territory in the months ahead, as the services sector keeps losing steam.” The eurozone’s struggles were fuelled by steep downturns signalled by surveys from economic powerhouses France and Germany. Germany fell into contraction as output dropped for the first time since January on the back of a sharp decrease in factory output, the latest figured showed. The painful PMI data comes as the European Central Bank (ECB) is eyeing a further rate hike this week in its quest to tame inflation. Eurozone inflation eased to 5.5% in June as energy costs slid, but those of food and drinks remained elevated as underlying price pressures persist. Since consumer prices remain above the ECB's 2% target, another interest rate increase appears a near certainty when ECB policymakers meet on Thursday. The eurozone entered a technical recession at the start of the year, and growth is forecast to be weak this year at around 1%. Outside the eurozone, Britain’s private sector is growing at its weakest pace in six months in July as orders for businesses stagnate in the face of rising interest rates and still-high inflation, a survey showed yesterday. The S&P Global/CIPS composite PMI showed a preliminary reading of 50.7, down from 52.8 in June in the biggest month-onmonth drop in 11 months. Although above the 50-level that separates growth from contraction, it was the weakest reading since January. The survey reinforced a sluggish outlook for Britain's economy, which has so far defied forecasts of recession in 2023 but has yet to feel the full impact of 13 back-to-back interest rate increases by the Bank of England. “Rising interest rates and the higher cost of living appear to be taking an increased toll on households, dampening a post-pandemic rebound in spending on leisure activities” said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global, which produces the data. “Meanwhile, manufacturers are cutting production in response to a worryingly severe downturn in orders, both from domestic and export markets,” he said. – AFP, Reuters The big names’ struggles highlight the depth of the problems in China’s property industry. – AFPPIC Holdings from neutral to underweight, and cut its price target to HK$0.90 from HK$2.30. The bank also reduced the price target of Country Garden Services Holdings to HK$6.70 from HK$22. Country Garden’s onshore-traded bonds dropped to less than half of their face value yesterday and dollar bonds due in 2025 and 2031 fell below 20 cents on the dollar. Wanda, China’s largest commercial developer, was also seeking cash for one of its subsidiaries to make an already-late coupon payment due before the end of a grace period on July 30. It sold part of another subsidiary to streaming company China Ruyi for US$320 million (RM1.46 billion), which a source familiar with the matter said would help it to repay a separate US$400 million bond. State-backed developer Greenland Holdings has missed repayments this month, while SinoOcean Group proposed extended terms for a 2 billion yuan (RM1.27 billion) bond due on Aug 2. The new problems have squashed a nascent rally after China lifted Covid-19 controls and opened its borders ending years of movement restrictions. Restructuring plans at Evergrande, which was the poster-child of the sector’s 2021 plunge into funding stress, are before the courts in Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands, while property sales are in a new slowdown. “Distressed Chinese property developers’ bond restructurings can buy them some room,” Fitch Ratings said in a report yesterday. “But most will continue to face repayment difficulties if home sales do not recover for a sustained period.” – Reuters founder of credit analysis firm Ratingdog. “Investors must become more and more pessimistic.” Property development has ground to a halt in China as a government crackdown on debts and crumbling public confidence have left builders unable to sell apartments or refinance their dues. Guidelines promoting urban redevelopment published late on Friday were seen as small scale, leaving investors hoping for more from a Politburo meeting expected this week. That big names were struggling, however, highlighted the depth of the problems. An index of mainland developers fell 6.4% yesterday and recorded its worst session of 2023. “Everything is falling,” said a Hong Kong debt fund manager, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “The major thing that we see now is onshore-traded Country Garden bonds going down,” he said. “That is the largest one. People get scared if that one cannot survive.” Country Garden is a giant with thousands of projects in nearly 300 Chinese cities. Its move to refinance a 2019 loan facility surprised and unnerved investors, and follows ratings downgrades and new defaults elsewhere. Li Changjiang, the president of Country Garden Services, sold 3.2 million shares of the company last week, reducing his stake to 0.11% from 0.21%. “Although this is not his first time selling shares of the company, the number of shares sold was one of the largest,” said JPMorgan analysts in a note. JPMorgan downgraded Country Garden SHANGHAI/SYDNEY: Stocks and bonds in China’s real estate industry fell to around eightmonth lows yesterday as repayment concerns at two of the country’s biggest developers deepened a crisis of confidence in the sector. Cash shortages at giants Country Garden and Dalian Wanda show funding issues have reached what many hoped were the largest and safest players in a business that once contributed a quarter of China’s gross domestic product and is all but frozen. Doubts are growing any official support will be forthcoming, and investors do not expect any aid to be aimed at shareholders. Country Garden shares fell by 8.7% to HK$1.26 (RM0.74), an eight-month low and shares in its services arm tumbled 17.9% to HK$7.4. Country Garden dollar bonds fell to less than a fifth of their face value. Shares at rival Longfor dropped 8.5%, while an asset sale at Wanda failed to revive bond prices as investors waited on whether the cash actually reaches bondholders’ pockets. “As market sales continue to weaken and policy expectations continue to fall short, it will be difficult for real estate developers to repay bonds by their own operations,” said Yao Yu,
2 5 J U L Y 2 0 2 3 T U E S D A Y T Heartwarming and captivating HEATRESAUCE recently concluded their third production of the 2023 season with the play Saturn Return under the skillful direction of the talented Mia Sabrina Mahadir, who proudly served as the sole female director for the year. The production took place at Sunway’s Rooftop Theatre from June 14 to 18, featuring an all-female cast and design team. The ensemble included Leaism, Sharifah Aleysha, Lim Sheng Hui, Sharanya Radhakrishnan, and Tharwa Karina, who have been working with Mia Sabrina on the show since February and offered insights into how the past and present shape the way we anchor the future. As someone new to the world of theatre, I was excited to have the privilege of experiencing this play firsthand. Now, what exactly is a “Saturn return?” For those familiar with astrology, the term may ring a bell. It refers to the phenomenon that occurs approximately every 28 to 29.5 years when the planet Saturn returns to the precise zodiac sign, degree, and house it occupied at the time of your birth. As Saturn is the planet of karma, your Saturn return is a time to think about who you are, what you have left behind, and what you have given to the world. This astrological phenomenon is widely believed to initiate a period of personal and spiritual growth, serving as a transitional phase and a trigger for major life choices that shapes one’s future. During a Saturn return, one can expect to face new challenges, increased responsibilities, tests, existential crises, and personal development. No matter your views on astrology, this cosmic event resonates with the weight of the approaching milestone, which for me lies approximately six years ahead. Prominent themes of life As I stepped into the theatre, I was astonished by the packed crowd eagerly awaiting the show. The play commenced with the cast gracefully moving about the stage, creating an atmosphere that felt like a warm-up or perhaps a preshow ritual. Their fluid movements set the stage for what was to come. The stage setup was superb, with a central screen displaying the timeline and other relevant elements of the play. Although I couldn’t help but think that a larger and brighter screen Theatresauce’s play touches hearts and encourages connection – PICS BY THEATRESAUCE oReview: SATURN RETURN theatre play █ BY HAZIQUE ZAIRILL A central screen displays timelines and other important information. would have enhanced the experience even further, I understood that the size of the venue may have limited the available space, making the setup perfectly suitable for the performance. The show began with the entire cast portraying a group of friends having a sleepover. They began sharing stories and experiences with each other, creating an enjoyable and engaging atmosphere. I found great pleasure in listening to their narratives, especially when they delved into traditional myth stories like Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup. The cast members delivered their performances with skill and humour, effectively conveying moral values to the audience, including those who may not have been familiar with the stories beforehand. It was a delightful blend of entertainment and meaningful storytelling. The performance transitioned into portraying the cast’s own reallife experiences, exploring themes (Left) The 120- minute play had universal themes. These relatable situations added depth to the play, allowing the audience to reflect on their own lives and the challenges they may face. The play had a runtime of 120 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission, and I found the themes to be universally relatable. As the performance reached its conclusion, the cast reflected on their life journeys, leaving the audience with a positive message. Navigating the journey of emotions I must say, it was an emotionally stirring experience, as the play skillfully blended various emotions. It evoked deep introspection within me, prompting me to reflect on my own life. One poignant takeaway from the performance was the importance of opening up to others. It reminded me that sharing our burdens and seeking support from good friends can help alleviate the difficulties we face along our respective journeys. The entire cast showcased exceptional talent in their performances. Their adept use of language, including impressive verbal skills and clever slang, added depth to the play. Also, their acting abilities were evident throughout the entire production, leaving a lasting impression. After the theatre performance, I had the opportunity to speak with one of the actresses, Leaism or Ilyahida, who is also a singer known in the indie music industry. She described the play as both challenging and enjoyable, particularly because it was her first experience with this type of production. She also stated, “This play carries a powerful message for individuals approaching or already in their thirties.” It motivates them to have trust in themselves and prioritise self-care.” She went on to say, “The importance of overcoming fear and opening up is huge, as it can lead to mutual support and the ability to save one another.” Overall, it was a heartwarming production that resonated deeply. It left me with a sense of connection and a renewed appreciation for the power of companionship during challenging times.

And so, it was a moment in my household.” Damon was cast as Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, the military commander in charge of the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb. In a recent interview, Damon credited Barroso for helping him during a tough career phase. 17 ENTERTAINMENT theSun LYFE ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 The IMF team with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). Death-defying stunts. For the greater good I MPOSSIBLE Mission Force (IMF)’s Ethan Hunt is back with an even bigger mission in the latest Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, and once again, Tom Cruise impresses us with muchawaited daredevil stunts. The first of two parts has all the usual suspects you would expect from the long-standing spy action drama franchise (first released in 1996), but as always, they’ve managed to up the ante once again. Race to retrieve the ‘key’ object Spoilers ahead: Dead Reckoning begins with a unique pair of keys, which must be combined to unlock a mysterious safe integral to the story’s plot. The opening scene shows a Russian submarine that detects an undersea ship that’s fast approaching them, prompting them to fire a torpedo at it. The ship, however, vanishes off the radar. Suspecting their internals were hacked, the Russian captain realises that the other ship wasn’t real and calls to stop the torpedo. Failing to do so, the underwater rocket turns back to target the Russian submarine. The submarine explodes upon impact, killing all the crew, and sinks to the bottom of the sea along with a safe and separate pairs of keys hanging on the necks of two dead soldiers. The keys then get stolen. In the meantime, US Intelligence discovers the faceless “enemy” is actually an Artificial Intelligence programme called an entity, which emerges randomly, infiltrates systems in many countries, and disappears without a trace. The US Intelligence Network systems were attacked, posing a danger to all the identities and whereabouts of their secret agents. Word then spreads that the “entity” went rogue and turned sentient, but instead of destroying it, all the powerful countries realise its potential and want to take control of it. In order to do that, they need to first obtain the █ BY S. TAMARAI CHELVI Fighting scene between Morales and Cruise. Airport but end up being targeted and trailed by two different groups of people, disrupting the mission. From here on, the mission begins with the team hunting for keys, but they face a lot of challenges, unexpected turns of events, and complicated situations that they must overcome to complete the mission. As the seventh Mission Impossible film in the franchise, Dead Reckoning is fantastic from start to finish: action-packed, thrilling, with twists and turns and, surprisingly, an unexpected death of a pivotal character. The story gets interesting, especially with a “villain” who can’t be seen or touched but seems very relevant in current times as Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is a reality now. Expect some anxiety-inducing scenes, such as the one at the airport when the team is forced to pivot on their well-laid-out plans due to certain disruptions. The most anticipated scene of all, with the motorcycle stunt on the cliff, definitely does not disappoint either. Which leads us to the main character of the movie. Tom Cruise continues to impress audiences with his acting and deathdefying stunts, even at 61 years of age, in many jaw-dropping moments in the movie. Of course, he doesn’t leave out his trademark running scene, which has become a universal meme. Action, humour, and captivating writing As for the team, quirky Simon Pegg (Benji) and the polar opposite Ving Rhames (Luther) provide muchneeded fun and comedy exchanges that will tickle your funny bone. Rebecca Ferguson’s sword-fighting scene was truly impressive, and British-American actress Hayley Atwell plays the role of pick-pocketer Grace brilliantly. Also, the mysterious “white widow”, a character from the previous movie, returns with more excitement for viewers. Director Christopher McQuarrie delivers a fast-paced movie with all the elements that loyal fans would be satisfied with after a five-year wait. Luckily for us, it’s only the first part, with another to look forward to. With the keys still missing, it’s highly likely that audiences will assume that the safe is still hidden within the ship wreckage under the ocean. 18 LIFESTYLE theSun LYFE ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 @thesundaily FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM SCAN ME IS it a melon? Is it a lemon? Borrowing from both, the lemon melon is a brand-new hybrid fruit that has been developed by Japanese researchers. But while this crossbreed may sound like a surprising concept, it’s the price tag that’s particularly striking because this fruit is not within everyone’s reach. Melons are synonymous with summer. Whether as an appetiser, accompanied by a slice of cured ham, as a dessert in its simplest form, or even as a sorbet, this fruity flavour is often associated with the lazy days of summer vacations, fading with the transition into fall. But this year, how about putting a new kind of melon on the menu? The lemon-melon combination sounds like a surprising one. And yet, it exists in Japan, where researchers on the island of Hokkaido, in the very north of the archipelago, took five years to develop this hybrid variety. This process gave rise to a fruit with a white flesh that has a slightly tangy, lemony taste while retaining a certain sweetness that pleases the taste buds. Visually, the lemon melon has a smooth, watermelon-like skin with a yellow-green hue. The fruit was launched at the end of June by the horticultural branch of the Japanese giant Suntory, known the world over for its whiskies and gins. Japan’s passion for citrus fruit is no secret. The archipelago grows over a hundred citrus fruits, and many Japanese prefectures have their own varieties. In fact, more surprising than the arrival of yet another citrusflavoured fruit, is the creation’s price tag. Lemon melon production is very limited, which inevitably pushes its price up. Expect to pay over JPY3,200 (RM104) a piece. Even more unexpectedly, stocks are already sold out in many Japanese department stores, according to S u n t o r y Flowers. Rain washed out the final day of the fourth Ashes Test, forcing a draw which ensured England, trailing 2-1 with one match to go, cannot win the series and leaving Australia, as holders, guaranteed to return home with the Urn. Despite the result, Cummins’ and his team’s work in England is not through yet. “It feels a bit weird,” he said. “The rain might have helped us, but it was a great result. “There won’t be huge celebrations. There may be a bit of a pat on the back for retaining (the Ashes), because there has been a lot of work going into this situation where a draw does get us to retain. “It’s good that we have retained but we know we have a fair bit of work to do for next week. “It’s a pretty similar group to 2019 when we retained and we came away feeling OK but it felt a bit like we had missed what we came over to achieve (a series win).” SHORTS Stokes positive after setback BEN STOKES will not be bringing the Ashes urn back home after a fifth-day washout in Manchester but the captain believes his England side have played their way into the nation’s hearts. “It’s a tough one to take, a tough pill to swallow. We were completely and utterly dominant throughout the hours of play we had, but the weather didn’t help us and we can’t change that,” Stokes said. “If this game went without rain we probably would have been favourites to be sat here at 2-2. Stokes refused to fumble for distractions, brushing aside questions about reserve days and the tradition of the holders having the right to retain in a draw series. “Test cricket is five days. I don’t ever see there being a reserve day in a series like this,” he said. “This is the way it’s always been. We know we can’t get the urn back but we can draw the series and that’s what we’ll be trying to do.” … and says team done wonders for Test cricket in England BEN STOKES believes his England side have already done “wonders” for cricket in the country, despite Australia retaining the Ashes as the fifth day at Old Trafford was entirely washed out. “I think it would have elevated everything that the series has already done for Test cricket (a decider), especially in England,” Stokes said. “But I think what we’ve managed to do, up until today anyway, has already done wonders for cricket in England. “There’s no doubt if we manage to get a result next week would have been a very, very special week in the history of English cricket, not just Ashes cricket. “We’ll be treating it as every other game and I hope the support we get will still be there or thereabouts as if it was 2-2. “We’re always putting our front foot forward and trying to press the game as hard as we possibly can. “As a captain that’s something that makes me very proud as a leader of the 10 other guys out there.” India on course to sweep series against Windies INDIA remained on course to complete a 2-0 series sweep after setting West Indies a daunting 365-run target and then reducing them to 76-2 on day four of the second Test yesterday. Tagenarine Chanderpaul (24) and Jermaine Blackwood (20) will resume overnight with West Indies still 289 behind and needing an extraordinary batting effort on a fifth day track to escape defeat. Earlier, leading an inexperienced Indian pace attack, Mohammed Siraj claimed 5-60 to help bowl out West Indies for 255 after the hosts resumed their first innings on 229-5 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. Possessing a handy lead of 183, Indian batters came out all guns blazing and racked up 181-2 in 24 overs before declaring their innings. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin further cemented India’s position, removing West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite for 28 and Kirk McKenzie for a duck. Ben Stokes. – REUTERSPIX
22 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 SPORTS AS THE rain continued to pour, Brian Harman marched towards the claret jug, dissecting Royal Liverpool and clinching a six-shot victory at the 151st Open Championship. The American, whose nerveless final round of 70 took him to a winning score of - 13, impressively blocked out the noise throughout a sodden afternoon at Hoylake. In fact, having vowed to sleep for 10 hours overnight on his five-shot lead, the unrelenting pitter patter of rain not only eased any nerves, it removed them entirely. The bowhunting fanatic, who has publicly revealed how he relishes elk hunting in Colorado, expertly swerved and blocked any counterattacks from his rivals behind a reliable short game. The foundation of this supreme win was built on a remarkable 58 out of 59 putts holed from 10 feet or less (98.3%) across the four days. The putting wizards of this sport of course find that rare combination of skill and mental resilience. “I’ve always had a self-belief that I could do something like this,” Harman said. “It’s just when it takes so much time it’s hard not to let your mind falter, like maybe I’m not winning again. “I’m 36 years old. Game is getting younger. All these young guys coming out, hit it a mile, and they’re all ready to win. Like when is it going to be my turn again? “It’s been hard to deal with. I think someone mentioned that I’ve had more top 10s than anyone since 2017, so that’s a lot of times where you get done, you’re like, dammit, man, I had that one; it just didn’t happen for whatever reason. “I had a lot of success as a junior golfer. I won the US Junior, and then as an amateur I was the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world for a good while, was the youngest American to get picked for the Walker Cup. “I had success. Like I had the pedigree. Then I got to college and it just kind of sputtered a little bit. I just didn’t keep up with the progression.” The Hoylake deluge certainly dampened any fire from Harman’s hopeful challengers, which saw a fourway tie for second at -7 with Jon Rahm, Tom Kim, Sepp Straka and Jason Day. And it was Rahm, riding high from a sizzling round of 63, who appeared most likely to inspect the Georgian’s nerves to close the deal for a first major championship. There were even flickers of hope for the chasing pack once more. But the 36-year-old replied every time. Attention for many now turns to the Ryder Cup in Rome this September. While Harman chalked up a third major out of four for Americans, this championship offered hope for Europe. Austrian Sepp Straka, with back-to-back years as a PGA Tour winner, offers an interesting wrinkle as a potential debutant for European captain Luke Donald, while Rahm, McIlroy, Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland all finished inside the top 13 and provide a potent quartet to at least offer resistance to a formidable American team. But despite rising to a careerhigh 10th in the world and surely destined to be on Zach Johnson’s team, Harman is opting to savour this moment after waiting 14 years as a professional to reach the pinnacle of golf. “I’m going to kick that can (Ryder Cup) down the road a little bit,” Harman added. “I’m going to enjoy this. “The next thing for me will be our FedEx Playoffs, what I’ll be looking forward to.” – The Independent Wizard with a putter Harman clinches Open glory at drenched Hoylake Spectator heckle helped spur champ to victory OPEN CHAMPION Brian Harman has revealed how being heckled by a spectator helped inspire him to a dominant victory at Royal Liverpool. Harman held a five-shot lead after a stunning second round of 65 but got off to a slow start on Saturday with two dropped shots in the first four holes. “After I made the second bogey a guy, when I was passing him, he said, ‘Harman, you don’t have the stones for this’,” Harman said in his post-championship press conference. “It helped snap me back into (thinking) ‘I’m good enough to do this. I’m going to do this. I’m going to go through my process, and the next shot is going to be good’. “I figured at some point, just with the weather and the scenario, you’re going to hit bad shots. I knew that the way I responded to that would determine whether I’d be sitting here or not.” “It’s pretty surreal. It really hasn’t sunk in yet,” Harman said. “I’m not going to let it (the Claret Jug) out of my sight for the time being. “To win what I consider the greatest prize in golf is as good as it gets. I’m over the moon.” First-time major champions could be excused for celebrating with some lavish spending but not Harman, who said part of his US$3 million (RM13.5m) prize would be used to pay for his new tractor. “I bought a new tractor for my hunting place,“ he said. “I’ll get home and I’ll be on the tractor mowing grass in the next few weeks, so I’m excited about that.” – The Independent/Reuters WHILE Max Verstappen welcomed the 44th win of his career in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, it was a number he wanted also to be rid of as soon as possible. Seven-time world champion and rival Lewis Hamilton races with 44 on his Mercedes and it is closely associated with the Briton. “Hopefully, I don’t stay on 44. That would be terrible,” the Red Bull driver told the postrace press conference for the top three finishers. There is every chance that the double world champion will have moved on to 45 by the end of this weekend, with Belgium following immediately on from Hungary and Verstappen on a run of seven wins in a row and nine from 11. Last year Verstappen won in Belgium from 14th on the starting grid. The Formula One record is nine in a row, with Sebastian Vettel doing that in 2013 with Red Bull on his way to a fourth title. Red Bull have now won a record 12 in a row – 11 this season and last year’s finale in Abu Dhabi – and brought upgrades to Hungary where Verstappen won with the sport’s biggest margin since 2021. “What an unbelievable rocket ship that was today. That was so enjoyable to drive. Unbelievable,” said Verstappen. “We could do basically whatever we wanted with the strategy. Twelve in a row for the team is pretty incredible.” “Hopefully we can keep this momentum going for a long time,” said Verstappen, whose win on Sunday was his 24th since the start of last season. “I think it was a pretty perfect day. “Of course, it’s really enjoyable to work with the whole team and to have this kind of success. “I think people probably forget how tough it is to win 12 in a row. Even when you have the fastest car,” he added. “It’s easy to make mistakes, or have an off weekend.” – Reuters Horner hails Perez for determined drive RED BULL boss Christian Horner heaped praise on Sergio Perez on Sunday after the Mexican raced from ninth to third at a Hungarian Grand Prix that delivered his Formula One team a record 12th win in a row. The podium was only Perez’s sixth from 11 races, a tally that compares poorly to winning team mate and world championship leader Max Verstappen’s nine victories and two second places. The Mexican remains second overall but now a mighty 110 points behind Verstappen and with Australian Daniel Ricciardo moving onto the scene at AlphaTauri as a possible future replacement. Perez needed to produce a confidence-restoring performance at the Hungaring and, after costly recent mistakes, he delivered. “I think he drove a great race today,” said Horner. “His recovery, his overtaking was brave, his pace was fast. “The way he made the places – passing Carlos (Sainz), passing Fernando (Alonso), passing (Oscar) Piastri, the strategy that he had. He was on fire today. “A race like that only gives you a huge amount of confidence. His overtaking, the bravery that he showed. “For me that was really a statement drive today to say ‘Look, don’t write me off’. And I think this will give him a lot of confidence.” Red Bull like F1 car in F2 race: Wolff RED BULL celebrated a record 12th successive Formula One win, and 11th of the season, on Sunday and left other teams feeling more than ever that they were racing a rival from another level. “Today you’ve seen the pace that Max had and we saw it in the long runs already on Friday. That’s where they are. It’s like a field of Formula Two cars against a Formula One,” said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. That said, Wolff felt Mercedes had the second quickest car and were making progress with seventime world champion Lewis Hamilton on pole for the first time in 33 races, since Saudi Arabia in 2021. Hamilton finished fourth on Sunday with teammate George Russell sixth after starting 18th. “If you look at the lap time profile, also where George came from, we just didn’t monetise on it,” said Wolff. Hamilton said he just lacked the pace to keep up on the first stint but the car started to become more driveable as the race went on. “We have a lot of work to do,” Hamilton said. “We are a long way off beating the Red Bull in a race and obviously now we are behind the McLarens.” McIlroy turns attention to Ryder Cup RORY MCILROY immediately turned his attention to the Ryder Cup after failing to end his long wait for a fifth major title at the Open. Chief among his aims is piloting Europe to Ryder Cup glory in Rome this autumn and gaining revenge for their heavy loss in the United States two years ago. The 34-year-old said: “Confidence is high. I’m playing well, obviously off the back of the win last week and another solid performance here. “I want to be to be right in there and win another FedEX Cup, (there is) the race to Dubai to win and the Ryder Cup, which is the most important of all. “After what happened at Whistling Straits, I don’t think we couldn’t be more motivated to go to Rome and get that Ryder Cup back. “There is a lot to golf to play individually before that but I think a lot of our attention will turn to Rome after this.” SHORTS Max has Hamilton’s number but not for long Brian Harman poses with the Claret Jug after winning the 151st British Open. – AFPPIX Verstappen
23 * SPORTS theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 25, 2023 TALISMANIC striker Alexandra Popp scored twice as Germany thumped debutants Morocco 6-0 to launch their Women’s World Cup title charge in ominous fashion yesterday. Popp’s 12th-minute header set the Germans on their way in Melbourne as Morocco’s piece of history – the first Arab team at a Women’s World Cup – started badly and ultimately ended in humiliation. The German skipper Popp collected another goal before the break, Klara Buehl added a third in their first attack after the restart, before own goals from Hanane Ait El Haj and Zineb Redouani. A last-minute strike from substitute Lea Schueller completed the rout as the twotimes former champions romped to the biggest win of the tournament so far. On paper it was the biggest mismatch of the group stage, with 70 places separating them in the world rankings, and the gulf was apparent from the off. The Atlas Lionesses showed glimpses of magic and had a goal disallowed. However, a fairytale win never looked likely in front of 27,256 fans at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, a near full-house. “We’re super-happy we were able to play like this in our opening match. It’s always difficult because you don’t really know where you stand or how your opponent will play,” said skipper Popp. “But we were able to impose our game. To have this kind of atmosphere in a stadium like this, that’s what a World Cup is all about. It pushes you, the fans carry you.” Germany, who won the World Cup in 2003 and 2007, went out in the quarterfinals four years ago. But since then coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has overseen impressive progress, shaping a dynamic, front-foot team which finished runners-up at last year’s Euros to England. “Today we came up against a team that was superior. It was David and Goliath,” said Morocco’s French coach Reynald Pedros. “They had something we didn’t. But we will stay positive and keep our heads up.” Colombia and South Korea are also in their group play first today (10am in Malaysia), before cohosts New Zealand return to action when they face debutants the Philippines (1.30pm) in Wellington. In the third match, Switzerland play former champions Norway (4pm) in the New Zealand city of Hamilton. – AFP @thesundaily FOLLOW ON TWITTER SCAN ME Top of the Popp Germany thrash Morocco 6-0 to start Women’s World Cup campaign Klopp worried as another veteran ‘wants out’ of Anfield JURGEN KLOPP has concerns that Liverpool are going through too much of a rebuild this summer, according to reports. That’s with the prospect that Thiago Alcantara could be his sixth veteran midfielder to leave the club. The Reds let Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leave as free agents while Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are heading to Saudi Arabia for a combined £52 million (RM301m). In Milner, Henderson and Fabinho, Klopp is losing three of his most senior players and his captain and vice-captain. The trio managed a combined 1,043 appearances at Anfield. And the oldest remaining midfielder, 32-year-old Thiago Alcantara, is now being tipped for an exit. The Daily Mirror report that the Spaniard is considering a return to his home country. It is claimed that La Liga clubs are aware Thiago would be ready to leave Anfield. He joined three years ago from Bayern Munich for £25m (RM145m) and is out of contract in 12 months’ time on Merseyside. Klopp does not want to lose Thiago but very rarely denies a player an exit if they want out of the club. Klopp has promised that Liverpool will have a strong squad for the new season. He told the We Are Liverpool podcast: “My main focus and my main energy has to go into the training sessions, that’s what I do. “The time left and right of the sessions then I can try and sort other stuff, and that’s what we are doing. “Still around three to four weeks until the first game of the season, a few things have to happen until then. Definitely. “Transfer market-wise as well, that’s clear now. It will happen, and we will have a good team. “What I would like to ask for, is to trust us. We feel really responsible for what is happening here and we will do absolutely everything to have a season, in the best possible understanding, we will never forget. That’s the plan.” – Express Newspapers CRISTIANA GIRELLI came off the bench to score an 87th-minute winner over Argentina as Italy began their Women’s World Cup with a 1-0 victory in a feisty encounter at Eden Park yesterday. It looked like Italy would have to settle for a draw in their Group G opener after Arianna Caruso and Valentina Giacinti both had goals disallowed in the first half. But Girelli, the Juventus veteran who was Italy’s top scorer in qualifying, came on for 16-year-old Giulia Dragoni near the end and needed just four minutes to make her mark with a superb header. Argentina coach German Portanova felt it was harsh on his side, who still have not won at a World Cup. “It was a very even match,” he said. “At times we controlled it and they did not have many opportunities. “The result was somewhat unfair. A draw would have been the right score.” The win for Italy in front of almost 31,000 fans in Auckland sets them up perfectly for their next game, against group favourites Sweden in Wellington on Saturday. Milena Bertolini’s team are hoping to match their performance at the 2019 World Cup in France, when they surprisingly made it to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile an Argentina team appearing at their fourth World Cup have still to win a game at the finals in 10 attempts. They will hope to break their duck when they play South Africa next. It looked set to be a frustrating evening for Italy as both Caruso and Giacinti had goals ruled out for offside in the first half. Argentina might even have gone in front just after the restart when an Eliana Stabile freekick from wide on the left almost caught out goalkeeper Francesca Durante. When a Manuela Giugliano freekick whistled just over at the other end midway through the second half, after captain Barbara Bonansea had been chopped down, it seemed as if the game would end goalless. But then Girelli, who scored a hattrick in a 5-0 win over Jamaica at the last World Cup, entered the fray in the 83rd minute. Moments later the 33-year-old got up above Stabile to score with a header from Lisa Boattin’s leftwing cross. Italy then held on for the victory, with Durante having to make another important save in stoppage time to keep out a freekick by Florencia Bonsegundo. – AFP Super-sub Girelli give Azzurri perfect start SIDENETTING Making World Cup debut crazy , says Thompson ALYSSA THOMPSON was just a starryeyed 14-year-old when she watched the 2019 Women’s World Cup final on television at her aunt’s house – now the United States forward is playing at the tournament. The Los Angeles native came on for her World Cup debut as a late substitute in the holders’ 3-0 win over Vietnam in Auckland on Saturday. She was just a teen when now-teammate Megan Rapinoe and the Americans won 2-0 against the Netherlands – the United States’ opponents on Thursday – in 2019 to retain the trophy. “I was at my aunt’s house and I was watching it there because we didn’t have TV at home,” Thompson, now 18, told reporters in Auckland. “In that moment I wasn’t really thinking that the next one I was going to be at because I felt so young, so it felt so far away,” said Thompson, who plays her club football for Angel City. “But being here now is crazy to me. It felt amazing,” Thompson said of her first World Cup experience. Philippines vow to ‘crash party’ PHILIPPINES coach Alen Stajcic warned his Women’s World Cup debutants want to “crash the party” when they play co-hosts New Zealand today (1.30pm Malaysian time). New Zealand are on a high after beating Norway 1-0 in the tournament opener to end a 15-game winless streak at Women’s World Cups dating back to 1991. The Philippines lost 2-0 to Switzerland in their first game but proved to be no pushovers. A capacity crowd of just over 30,000 is expected in Wellington, with most cheering on the home side, but the Australian Stajcic said yesterday: “You have to block all that out and embrace it. It’s a brilliant occasion, so to be playing in front of such a big crowd and TV audience is a really special moment. You have to go out there and give it your best shot, so as motivating as it will be for New Zealand, it is for our team as well. I think that game was a real turning point for me to know that we can rise to this level,” he said. “We want to crash the party. It’s not really their party – it’s everyone’s, ours as well.” Korea coach shuts down teen ‘hype’ SOUTH KOREA coach Colin Bell is desperate to protect 16-year-old United States-born attacker Casey Phair from “hype” ahead of her potential debut at the Women’s World Cup today. Bell called up the rookie for his South Korea squad for Australia and New Zealand, in a move that made headlines in the United States, Korea and beyond. She is not expected to start for South Korea’s World Cup opener against Colombia today (10pm) in Sydney, but could be a secret weapon off the bench if they are chasing the game. “She did very well when she came in training with two other young players that we had,” the 61- year-old said, when asked what role Phair could play at the tournament. “So now she’s in the squad, then we just take it day by day, so I don’t really want to hype up a young player too much before she’s even played. That’s why I’ve been safeguarding her from the media.” Asked a second time about Phair, Bell replied: “Like I say, we’ll see.” Germany’s forward Alexandra Popp (centre) celebrates with teammates after scoring her team’s second goal during the 2023 Women’s World Cup Group H match against Morocco at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium yesterday. – AFPPIX

This time last year, the Dutchman was sifting through the mess left by a wretched 2021-22 campaign in which embarrassing results compounded incoherent performances. Ten Hag quickly stamped his mark on the team and oversaw United’s first trophy win since 2017, with the Carabao Cup triumph followed by a third-placed Premier League finish. The Old Trafford giants also lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City and newly-appointed captain Fernandes is demanding more this time around. “We did a really good season,” the skipper said. “It was not successful, but I think that our season was good. “We started in the wrong way. We had two bad results, our away games were not the best. We didn’t get the best results. But I think overall the season was good. “Obviously it was the first season for the manager, first season for many players.” He continued: “Now we know that we have to improve game-wise and we will. We will improve it and we will show that we are a big team. “Manchester United have to fight for everything. This club deserves that. “We know when you come to a club like this that you have to fight for all the trophies that you are included in. That’s what we have to do. “Fight for them, try our best to win every game that we have and that’s it.” United certainly appear on the right track, with Mason Mount brought in from Chelsea and Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana following him to the club this week. The Red Devils are now pushing for a striker to bolster a side that beat fellow title hopefuls Arsenal 2-0 on Saturday in New Jersey thanks to goals from Fernandes and Jadon Sancho. The Portuguese scored as he led the side as permanent skipper for the first time since Ten Hag decided to take the armband off of Harry Maguire. “There was a feeling I would like it to be me but I didn’t hear,” Fernandes said of the decision. “The manager wanted to tell the team together. It is really good to be captain of Manchester United, it is a big achievement in my career but now there is a lot of work to do. “The manager chose me because of what I was doing last season and the way he worked with me. “He liked the way I work, my discipline, everything I give, my passion, everything I give, so I don’t see why I should change. “(The approach) will be the same. I don’t need to change anything. “You have to be as natural as you can because they all know me, they know I am really vocal, that I try to be open with everyone, be clear and try to help in the way I think is the best. “Sometimes I can be wrong and not be the best way, but they know me really very well, so they know I will give everything for them. “Everything I said to them is because I think they can do good things because they are big players in the dressing room.” Fernandes also revealed how life under Ten Hag is “tough” as the passionate Dutchman has extremely high demands of his team. That could be seen as his temper boiled in Saturday’s friendly victory over Arsenal. “We know how the manager he is, he takes care of all details, it is pretty tough to train with him but this is the result and we have to understand that it will be tough,” Fernandes explained. “Every pre-season there is a lot of training, a lot of work to do and it’s our second season (with him now) so we have to get better and better.” – The Independent/Express Newspapers or download app from the App Store or Google PlayTM . After Pele’s move to New York Cosmos in 1975, MLS kicking off in 1996 and David Beckham’s 2007 switch to the LA Galaxy, this summer saw another seismic moment in North American football. Global star Messi’s move to Miami just seven months after lifting the World Cup with Argentina in Qatar sent ripples across the footballing world. The 36-year-old’s last-gasp free-kick winner on his debut against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup on Friday only increased attention on a move that Garber is thrilled about. “MLS has been on this sort of rocket ship for a while,” said the league’s commissioner since 1999. “Every day that you think they don’t maybe there’s a quiet period and you can settle in, something else happens that gives you even more momentum, more energy and more sort of optimism about where things are going. “I think the time is going to come where these great things become expected, special moments are going to be expected and it’s not going to be ‘boy, is this the most special time in the history of the league?’” Garber takes great pride in the fact “the best player in the history of the game made MLS his league of choice” when he could have gone anywhere. The commissioner says the Argentinian’s arrival underlines the league’s “unending ambition”, perhaps meaning that one day the best players on the planet will move to North America at 26 rather than 36. “I think you need to start with getting the best of all time choose us now,” Garber said when that potential change was put to him. “What will that look like in the years to come and perhaps it will because I think the perception of Major League Soccer is going to change dramatically over the next number of years. “I think our own ambition is going to change as we all see how all of this plays out. “But I think because there are a handful of really big names who come at the end of their career, everyone has this label that they put on. “I mean, David Beckham was 31. He went to Milan and PSG after. “Yet nobody was saying to Zlatan when he left LA and then he played for Milan for two years and was leading scorer for a while that AC Milan is a retirement club. “So, I think that’s what all you international pundits like to say but we actually feel really good about the dynamic of our player rosters. “This concept of a designated player – someone who is outside the (wage) cap who is internationally renowned – that you do need someone who has a legacy of popularity.” The designated player rule was brought in when Beckham arrived in MLS, with his unique deal allowing him the option to purchase an expansion club at a discounted price. That team was Miami and the England great looked emotional when Messi made his debut 16 years to the day after he stepped out for his Galaxy bow. “It fulfilled a dream that he had to really make an impact and follow up on his commitment from the earliest press conference in 2014,” Garber said of the Inter co-owner. “David stood up there and said ‘I’m going to bring the best players in the world here to Miami – this is a city I love, it’s a team that I’m going to build, I’m going to make it great and I love the league’. “It’s just not often that things align, and you sort of deliver on the things you say you’re going to deliver. I think that’s cool.” – The Independent Time to step up United captain Fernandes demands more from his team after year of improvement █ SIMON PEACH TOUR DOUBLE … Jumbo-Visma’s Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard wearing the overall leader’s yellow jersey (3rd left) celebrates his overall victory with teammates as he cycles to the finish line after the 21st and final stage of the 110th edition of the Tour de France in Paris yesterday.
