The Gold Rush have won 17 team championships duringJosephMoses’nineseasonsasheadcoach.including a victory in the Mississippi College Opener on August 30.
Xavier won its seventh consecutive GCAC team championshipin2012.TheGoldNuggetsscored15points at that meet — the first perfect score since by a GCAC women’s champion since 1996.
Intheearlymorninglight,thefieldlooksimpossibly large. The sight of it, alongside the presence of rival teams and the possibility of a win,creates anxiety - even in spectators. The ground is dewy and muddy, seeping into shoes and coating pant legs.Over the horizon,we can see therunnerssplashingthroughit,comingcloserandcloser toourvantagepoint.Afeelingofanticipationpermeatesthe airaswewait,hopingforaglimpseofthoseblackandgold jerseys,to see a familiar face rise above those green hills. We are anxious for victory.
Therunnersthemselvesexhibitamazingendurance, shrugging off the humidity and outrunning the stress of competition.Xavier’sathletesareparticularlyimpressive, leading the pack and eating the ground with their long strides. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams performed admirably,bringingXavier’sreputationofexcellencetoa new arena and context.

“From what I have observed,” Xavier’s tennis team is exceptional.Theplayers’talentsareshowcasedwithinthe brandnewtennisstadium,whichwascompletedspring of 2013. These players, nicely outfitted in black and white,arefromadiversearrayofbackgrounds,majors, and even countries. One thing all of the players have in common,though,istalent.Witheveryracketswing,they are furthering Xavier’s reputation of excellence.

ChristopherKennierepresented the Gold Rush in the regular- season finale, the LSU Alumni Gold meet at Baton Rouge, La. The Gold Nuggets won the team title of the 2013 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.Itwasthesecond time in three years that the XU women won the title. Xavier University of Louisiana’s Devinn Rolland and Catherine Fakler produced two of the Gold Nuggets’ best performances of theseasonintheLSUAlumniGold track and field meet Saturday.
Rolland, in the B-section of the women’s 200-meter run,
placed sixth out of 22 runners in 24.66 seconds and finished ahead of 15 runners from NCAA Division I. It was the fourth time this season that Rolland met the A-standardfortheNAIANational Championshipsinthisevent,andit was her second fastest time this season.
Fakler recorded the Gold Nuggets’ fastest time of
the season in the women’s 1,500-meter run, 4:43.92. She placed fourth out of 15 runners in the B-section of that event and finished ahead of 10 NCAA D-I runners. But Fakler missed qualifying for the nationals by lessthan11⁄2seconds.TheNAIA’s B-standard is 4:42.50, and the A-standard is 4:40.10.

Hannah Lawing was promoted to head coach. The Gold Nuggets (6-7) will played at home after 13 consecutive road matches to start the season. It was the first volleyball match in the Convocation CenterinNovember.ItwastheGulfCoastAthletic Conference opener for the Nuggets, who were two-time defending GCAC regular-season and tournament champions.
