Year In
REVIEW

Message from Rob Curry

Dear CVHP family,

Welcome to CVHP’s Year in Review. This is an annual tradition where we have the opportunity to reflect
and celebrate the many accomplishments we made throughout the year. And, it has been a great year!

We received important recognitions for our clinical excellence from numerous notable organizations,
including the American Heart Association, Blue Shield of California, Women’s Choice Awards and US
News & World Report. Our commitment to expanding our services beyond our hospital walls continued
with the acquisition of several physician practices, a freestanding imaging center and two office buildings
with more acquisitions coming soon! Our focus on meeting the increasing needs of our community also
resulted in achievements such as the launch of a Family Medicine Residency Program, our remodeling
and naming dedication of our Gelaris Education Center and the notable accreditation of our freestanding
surgery center.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the contributions, teamwork and dedication of all of
you. Congratulations everyone.

2018 will be a very exciting year for CVHP with our rebranding initiative well underway. As many of you
learned at our Town Hall Meetings, our business has outpaced our brand and it is time to make a change.
Our brand is our identity and sharing our story with our internal and external communities is vital. This
rebrand will give us the opportunity to do just that. Stay tuned for more in this new year as we prepare to
launch our new name and brand.

Thank you all for living our mission and providing the best care to all we serve. I look forward to another
exciting year ahead. Have a wonderful holiday season and new year.

CVHP Named a Top 100 Hospital

Cleverley and Associates once again named CVHP a “Top 100”
hospital and recipient of its Community Value Leadership
Award. Both CVMC and FPH were also designated as
“Community Five Star” hospitals. Cleverly and Associates
publishes an annual report through the State of the Hospital
Industry Handbook and selects 100 top financially performing
hospitals in the nation.

The goal is to show the public that a hospital provides value
to the community when it is financially viable, is appropriately
reinvesting back into its facilities, maintains a low cost
structure, has reasonable charges and provides high quality care
to its patients.

Lighten Up SGV! 2017

CVHP’s innovative weight loss support program kicked off
the new year with its community weigh-in event and weight
loss challenge on Saturday, January 28 at QVH. This is a free
program which offers participants monthly workshops and
resources to help them lose weight using whatever plan they
choose.

FEBRUARY

CVHP Celebrates Heart & Vascular Month

February was filled with events all aimed at educating our
community about heart and vascular disease. Physician-led
lectures included topics on Peripheral Artery Disease, women’s
heart health and atrial fibrillation.

Staff members, physicians and volunteers wore red on
February 8 to show our patients and the community that
we care about their hearts. Special group photos from each
campus were then posted to our CVHP Facebook page and
Intranet.

More than 130 community members and CVHP employees
gathered at Covina Park on February 25 for the first ever Heart
Walk. They walked around the park in honor or in memory
of loved ones and to help spread awareness of heart disease.
The event featured educational booths from a few local

businesses, as well as the following CVHP departments: Citrus
Valley Heart Center, Mended Hearts, Breath Savers, Primary
Stroke Center and CardioPulmonary Rehab. Sponsors also
donated refreshments and raffle prizes – including a brand new
bike. Other Heart Walk sponsors and donors were: Incycle,
Medtronic, Abbott, Yoga Funk, JuicePlus and Crunch Fitness.

screen the lungs for cancer in just 30 seconds.

A CT lung screening allows the radiologist to look at different
levels, or slices, of the lungs detecting malignant tumors in
early stages. With CT lung screening, the cancer cells can be
treated at a time when the cancer still has promising survival
rates and is localized to the lungs. The most obvious benefit
to lung cancer screening is that lung cancer that is caught
early is more likely to be treatable and cured.

The Women’s Choice Award is encouraging women to learn
which hospitals on the America’s Best list are “their heart
hospitals” and to share the list with their circles of friends
and loved ones through Facebook and other means during
American Heart Month.

Joint Commission Survey

The Joint Commission tri-annual survey for Inter-Community
Hospital, Queen of the Valley Hospital, Citrus Valley Hospice
and Home Health was held the week of February 13.

There were several areas that need extra focus. Together, we
worked diligently to improve these findings immediately for
the follow-up survey.

Nurses of the Year

During the week of May 1, CVHP celebrated the dedication
and service of our nursing staff. Nurses’ Week honors the
legacy of Florence Nightingale, a nurse who became famous
for treating wounded soldiers during the Crimean War and
for her work in establishing nursing as a profession.

During the special brunches held at each campus, Nurses
of the Year awardees were announced. These nurses were
selected by their colleagues based on how they demonstrated

CVHP Named The Best . . . AGAIN!

Once again, you did it! CVHP was named “Best Hospital” by
the readers of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and by you, our
CVHP family! We were officially recognized in the Tribune as
part of the 2017 Readers Choice Awards section.

This is the SIXTH time that we have been selected and we
should all be proud of this honor. CVHP was also named a
“Favorite Place to Work” by the readers.

Organ Donation Awareness

Our hospitals, through our partnership with OneLegacy,
joined thousands of others by raising “Donate Life Flags
Across America.” These flags symbolize that we:

• Honor all who have given life as organ, eye and
tissue donors

• Celebrate all who receive the gift of life

• Support those waiting for life-saving transplants

• Remember those who died waiting for an organ
transplant

Our hope is that by raising these flags we will help raise
awareness of the importance of organ donation. To register

Accreditation for Glendora Surgery Center

The CVHP-owned Glendora Surgery Center achieved
accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory
Health Care (AAAHC). Accreditation distinguishes this
surgical center from many other outpatient facilities by
providing the highest quality of care to its patients as
determined by an independent, external process of evaluation.

Status as an accredited organization means that the Glendora
Surgery Center has met nationally recognized standards for
the provision of quality health care set by AAAHC.

Ambulatory health care organizations seeking accreditation
by AAAHC undergo an extensive self-assessment and on-site
survey by AAAHC expert surveyors – physicians, nurses, and
administrators who are actively involved in ambulatory health
care. The survey is consultative and educational, presenting
best practices to help an organization improve its care and
services. This accreditation shows our commitment to safe and
reliable care for our patients.

AUGUST

Geleris Family Education Center

Citrus Valley Health Foundation hosted a ribbon cutting
ceremony at the new Geleris Family Education Center in
Glendora. The building, formerly known as the Foothill
Education Center, is located across the street from Foothill
Presbyterian Hospital.

The special event honored the contributions of the Geleris
family, many of whom were in attendance, as were members
of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. The Geleris family has
been longtime supporters of our hospitals and hospice. Dr.
Paul Geleris, a clinical pathologist, served on the Foundation’s
Board of Trustees and, along with his wife Marilyn, helped
found The Geleris Cancer Center at QVH. Marilyn and her
sons continue to honor Dr. Geleris’ legacy of philanthropy by
giving back to the community in many different ways.

The new education center has five meeting rooms featuring
the latest multimedia, teleconferencing and distance learning
technology. It will be an important center in continuing our
health education programs and outreach. We are grateful for
the Geleris Family and their many contributions that continue
to make a difference in the communities we serve.

Hospice Fund-Raiser

Dare to Care was held on August 12 at Heritage Plaza in
Covina. This special event was organized in memory of
Pat Allen, wife of Walter Allen, a Covina city councilman
and chair of the Citrus Valley Health Partners Board of
Directors. All proceeds benefitted Citrus Valley Hospice.

was also noted by the surveyors that they observed a true
“family” environment and passion for the delivery of highly-
reliable care to our community.

Family Medicine Residency Program Recruitment

The recruitment process for our next class of Family Medicine
residents kicked off in September and the program had
received more than 800 applications in just the first few weeks.
That’s compared to 250 last year. Once the applications are
reviewed, the goal is to invite at least 100 candidates for onsite
interviews. There are only 10 positions available for the class
beginning residency in 2018. The new residents will join our
charter class who will advance to their second year of training.
We look forward to finding yet another group of talented and
eager residents for our hospitals.

of our NICU team members were there to greet and reunite
with many former patients. It was quite the celebration with
music, face-painting, raffle prizes and our traditional group
photo, which was fun with over 500 participants!

CNA Contract Ratified

The collective bargaining agreement between CVHP and the
California Nurses Association (CNA) was ratified on October 5,
2017. This four-year agreement ensures that CVHP will remain
competitive, while being able to obtain and retain nursing
talent by offering quality health insurance and wages consistent
with the local market. The non-economic changes also allows
CVHP to ensure appropriate staffing and manage its day-to-day
operations.
