Largerigidplatesgraduallyreplacechainmailarmor.

donacloselyfittedshirt,braiesandhose.Hisarms
andlegsarecoveredwithmetalprotectors.Thenhe
addsapaddedundercoat,calledagambeson,and
overthishishauberk(ashortercoatofmailcalledthe
haubergeon.Nextcomesacoatofplates,andover
allgoesasucrote,oftenbelted,andaswordbelt.
Whengoinginaction,headdshishelmet,andapair
ofmetalglovesorgauntles.Thecoatofplates,
actuallyaplate-lined,closelyfittedsurcote,opensin
frontandfastswithbuckles.Thepracticeofbuckling
amen’sjacketleftoverrightlikelyoriginatesinthe
constructionodthisgarment.
