Ah, you have reached the start of the latest edition of the very much revered school magazine of the Penang Free School. The year is 2010, the turn of a new decade. With a new decade comes great responsibility, ….I mean new changes. Our magazine has undergone changes, some minor, some major, but the changes are for the better. First and foremost, we have reinvented the design and layout of the magazine with a little reference to the previous edition of the school magazine. The most obvious change in the design and layout can be clearly seen in the Happenings section. The Student Bodies and Sports and Games sections have been revamped -- there are now three pictures on each page. Yes, I know many out there will grumble and sigh that their pretty and handsome faces are too small for anyone to admire, but unfortunately we had no choice as paging issues got in the way. Believe me, I would love to see all those pretty and handsome faces. Changes are customary, but humans being creatures of habit, are resistant to change, despising it, loathing it. When Galileo produced cutting-edge research that would revolutionise the way humans think, the people were highly resistant, rejecting Galileo’s radical ideas. However it takes a few believers to change the mindset of the human race. So, I hope, that somewhere out there, possibly in a galaxy far, far away, there will be a few believers. This magazine will be to some, a fond memento of their days in high school, and to others a symbol of loyalty, determination and of friendship. Conclusively, I would like to express my heartfelt and sincerest thanks to everyone who was involved in the production of the magazine, be it a small part or a very significant role. Your contribution is deeply cherished. Thank you. Fortis Atque Fidelis. With love, Nelson EDITORIAL

Selamat Maju Jaya. TAN SRI MUHYIDDIN BIN HAJI MOHD YASSIN Menteri Pelajaran Malaysia MENTERI PELAJARAN MALAYSIA 6
TAN SRI DATO’ HAJI ALIMUDDIN BIN HAJI MOHD. Sekian, terima kasih. HAJI IBRAHIM BIN MOHAMAD, PJK. Pengarah Pelajaran, Jabatan Pelajaran Pulau Pinang PENGARAH PELAJARAN PULAU PINANG 8
Dear Readers, I would like to take this golden opportunity to thank the Editorial Board of Penang Free School for giving me a space to pen a few lines in this esteemed school magazine. Being the PIBG Chairman of this school, I am proud to record here that the teachers, staff and parents of Penang Free School had been very supportive and committed in all the activities and programmes that were held in the school. The strong bond between the PIBG, teachers and parents has been a very conducive environment for the betterment of all. It is also heartening to take cognizance of the fact that the School, being the oldest in the state of Penang, has been continuously producing outstanding students who have not only brought fame for themselves but also to the school, the state and to Malaysia, our country. The school will be celebrating its 200th year (bicentennial) anniversary soon, and I wish the community of Penang Free School a success of this event. Thank you. Messages Greetings to all readers, Before I begin, I would like to congratulate the Editorial Board for successfully producing this year’s issue of the Penang Free School magazine. This magazine is the result of their relentless effort and unwavering commitment which I truly appreciate. As the Principal of this historic school, I am very proud to see my students excelling in virtually every field. Through their dedication and determination, the present crop of Frees is achieving success both locally and internationally. Nevertheless, I would like to remind all of you Frees to never rest on your laurels and be complacent. It is an obligation for us to always compete with ourselves and raise our own standards in order to maintain our esteemed reputation. It is also my sincerest wish to see every Free maturing into a well-groomed, multitalented and self-motivated individual, capable of overcoming future challenges. We must learn to quickly adapt to the ever-changing global environment if we aspire to succeed. As the world becomes increasingly unpredictable, those who are unable to catch the winds of change shall be relegated to oblivion. Lastly, I hope that the Grand Old Lady will continue to produce top notch individuals capable of shaping the world. After all, Penang Free School truly is a school for Scholars, Sportsmen and Gentlemen. Thank you. TUAN HAJI RAMLI BIN DIN Headmaster Penang Free School HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE 10
Miss Lee Ewe Im, also known as ‘Coco Lee’ joined the school twenty four years ago. The fifty-six year old teacher who is admired for her hardwork and dedication was born on the 14th of May, 1954. Miss Lee is known for her eye in detail and her passion for striving in co-curricular excellence. She attended SRK Convent, Penang Road for her primary education. As for her secondary school, Miss Lee was in Convent Light Street. In 1972, she was enrolled in St. Xavier’s Institution where she went through her sixth form studies. She had her tertiary education at the University of Science Malaysia, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Education. In addition to that, she had a double major in Biology and Chemistry. Her teaching career started at SMK Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar. After seven and a half years at her first teaching post, she was then transferred to SMK Bakti, Tasek Gelugor where she spent six months there before joining Penang Free School on the 16th of July, 1986 under the tenure of the headmaster, Mr. G. Krishna Iyer. Miss Lee started started off teaching Chemistry in the school. She was then offered the opportunity to teach Biology in Form 4, 5 and 6 by Mr. Loh Huah Sin who saw the deep passion she had for the subject. She had seized many awards along the way. One of the many she received would be the Excellent Service Award twice in the 90’s by Tuan Yang Terutama, Governor of Penang. In 2008, Miss Lee had the Quality Service Award (school level) added to her belt. The Excellent Service Award was given to her in the same year by Jabatan Pelajaran Negeri, Pulau Pinang. The teacher who always epitomised discipline received The Full Attendance Certificate (school level) in ‘07 and ‘08. The first ever Senior Assistant of Co-Curricular Activities of Penang Free School was hers to claim in 2003. She had contributed tremendously to the co-curricular system the school possesses today. Her weekly speeches and profound advice in the co-curricular assembly held every Wednesday is something every student and teacher would miss. With her retirement, the school has lost a great asset. Her retirement ceremony which was celebrated with much pomp, splendour and accolades by her beloved colleagues and students showed how much they appreciated her. We thank Miss Lee for everything she has done for the school and her students, and we wish her a happy retirement. 11 Tribute
Justin Lim Nurrahman Johari Justin Lim Unbelievably, we made it. That probably sums up all the sleepless nights which accompanied the frantic last minute work in getting this section done. Before I move on, I would like to thank, from the very bottom of my heart, Nik Rashid for his help in the completion of this section. Obviously, this foreword would not be complete without thanking Mr Goh Seng Kar, our beloved teacher advisor. No sarcasm intended here, as Mr Goh personally handled the captions and was directly involved in every part of this section. Thank you, sir. Not forgetting my trainee, Rahman, who had been of great help during the photoshoot sessions. Being in the Design and Layout Team, I did not have much time for this section and I am only grateful that this section has finally completed. To every other soul who helped in even the tiniest indirect bit of this section, thank you. This section, as its name suggests, features people behind the administration of the School. Being the heart and soul of the School, they carry on the very mission and vision of Reverend Hutchings, the founder of the Grand Old Lady, in ensuring that the School continues running in tip-top condition. It is a great honour to present to you, the heroes and heroines, including the unsung ones, of Penang Free School. Finally, I would like to apologise for any mistakes, if there are any, in this section. We are, after all, humans. Cheers XD Justin Lim

Alvin Cheah Alvin Lim Justin Lim They say that once you leave school, you still leave a part of yourself behind in it: a legacy of yourself. The Editorial Board of the School Magazine has diligently corresponded with the Old Frees just like every year, in order to receive updates from our esteemed predecessors. Every Free and Old Free has a strong love for his school and will always speak proudly of her as well as protect her from any ill word. As the saying goes, ‘ Once a Free, always a Free, never an ex-Free, forever an Old Free.’ Alvin Cheah
Old Frees DATO’ DR. ONG HEAN TEE, President 2010/2011, Old Frees’ Association (OFA) Em: [email protected] / Fax: 604-6597096 / HP: 012-493 0510 / Tel: 604-6577610 33 Medan Tembaga, Island Park, 11600 Penang, Malaysia. 2010 September 13th MESSAGE FROM DATO’ DR. ONG HEAN TEE PRESIDENT, OFA 2010-11 On behalf of the Old Frees’ Association, Penang, I wish to send our heartiest greetings to the students and staff of the Penang Free School and to Old Frees around the world on the occasion of Speech Day 2010. To the Principal and the teachers, we wish to thank you for teaching and guiding the students. Your love and dedication towards the students will be greatly repaid when your students succeed in life and attribute their success to you. The good that they do for our society, nation and the world will be also attributed to you, their teachers. To the students, we hope that you will enjoy your days in the School, just as we enjoyed our days. These days spent in school will help to define you and your future. So make full use of these years to learn, not only to do well in the examinations, but also to become better persons so that you can live easily with other people and thus “make the world a better place than you found it” (Lord Baden-Powell, Founder of Scouting). Learn to take a step back when confronted by issues which create doubt in the society. If we are wrong, admit it and correct the wrong. If we are right, be humble about it and be compassionate towards those who are wrong. Don’t be like the two goats on the bridge – each refusing to give way and neither being able to cross to the other side. Learn to give way to the majority even though you may feel you are 150% correct, and help to make the society peaceful and harmonious because you are big enough to take a step back. On behalf of the Old Frees’ Association, Penang, I wish the Principal and the staff all the best in life and hope that you will always be inspired and happy. Muzamil Moussa Khor Yang Yue Jin Welcome to the academic section of this year’s edition of the prestigious school magazine. These next few pages will take you for a walk through our school’s ever so impressive academic background. This section provides you with statistics and detailed analyses of the PMR, SPM and STPM results for the year 2009 based on the recent revamp of the National Grading System. You could also get up close and personal with the top scorers of the SPM and STPM exams and get to know their experiences in the build up to their respective public exams in the interview section. Be sure to also have a look at our school’s Speech Day prize winners, the” crème de la crème” of the school for the year 2009. Yet again, the Frees of our school have never failed to live up to the term “Scholars” in the school’s motto. Truly, completing this section is no one man show. It requires teamwork and cooperation. The first person I would like to thank is Mr. Goh, our Teacher Advisor, for his support and guidance. With his help, we were able to complete this year’s magazine despite given the circumstances we had to face. Next, is the Design & Layout Team. Justin and Yue Jin. You guys were absolutely wonderful in coming up with the magazine’s AWESOME designs. You guys ROCK! Thanks also to our cool but diligent Editor, Nelson, for being of great help and always keeping track of our progress. Last but not least my junior, Yeang Kong Zheng for lending a helping hand when I needed one. Well, I guess that is all I have to say. My hope is that the students will make this section an inspiration to achieve even greater heights in their academic performances. Being a member of this board really was a great experience that I would truly treasure. Thank you everyone and “FORTIS, ATQUE , FIDELIS”. Muzamil

Academics For the year 2009, Penang Free School is proud to have 5 students scoring an outstanding 4 straight A’s (Ching Kuan Ming, Leow Zhe Eu, Eiven Wong, Mei Funn and Rutheran). Some members of the Penang Free School Editorial Board were there to get a glimpse of the euphoria and disappointment as the 2009 Upper 6 students received their much anticipated results. We were fortunate to interview all 5 of the school’s STPM 2009 top scorers as they share their experience in the build up to their STPM examination. 1. First of all, how do you feel? Kuan Ming (4A’s) : I’m feeling really good. Nevertheless, I did have my doubts. Zhe Eu (4A’s) : Overwhelmed, ecstatic! I thought I was going to get B’s for Biology and Chemistry. Eiven Wong (4A’s) : Surprised. I didn’t expect to get straight A’s because I wasn’t doing well in school exams. Mei Funn (4A’s) : Ecstatic, overjoyed. I seriously felt like screaming as soon as I received my results! Rutheran (4A’s) : I’m very happy. Frankly, I thought it was going to be B’s for English and Maths. 2. Is there anyone you would like to thank for this success? Kuan Ming (4A’s) : Oh, yes! God, my parents, teachers, and not forgetting my elder brother. Zhe Eu (4A‘s) : God, my parents, teachers, tuition teachers and my friends too. Eiven Wong (4A’s) : My parents, teachers and yes, God too! Mei Funn (4A’s) : First of all, God, then my parents, teachers, tuition teachers, and my friends. Rutheran (4A’s) : Firstly, it has to be God, my parents, teachers, tuition teachers and my friends too. 3. With the immense pressure surrounding you, where did you draw your inspiration from to constantly drive you? Kuan Ming (4A’s) : My elder brother. Seeing him getting 4A’s in his STPM really motivated me. Zhe Eu (4A‘s) : Basically, I owe it to my parents, teachers and friends. Eiven Wong (4A’s) : I think it was PFS herself. Being a Free really give you that sense of pride and motivates you to excel in everything you do and uphold the school’s identity. Mei Funn (4A’s) : Oh, that would have to be my parents, teachers and of course tuition. Rutheran (4A’s) : Parents, teachers, friends and God. They’re always there to pick you up when you’re down. 4. The road to this success certainly wasn’t easy, what are some of the sacrifices you had to make? Kuan Ming (4A’s) : I had to cut down on my co-curricular involvement and had to study up to 10 hours per day because I was far behind the rest. Zhe Eu (4A‘s) : I was forced to cut back on TV, computer and other forms of entertainment. Eiven Wong (4A’s) : Well, I didn’t go out often and yes, cut down on TV and movies. Mei Funn (4A’s) : I had to sacrifice a lot of my free time attending tuition after tuition. Sometimes I couldn’t even find time to eat peacefully. Rutheran (4A’s) : I had to sacrifice my football! Enjoyed a lot when I was in Lower 6, so I needed to catch up. 5. Have extra-curricular activities ever been a burden to you? Kuan Ming (4A’s) : Of course not. These activities help in other ways like developing one’s social and leadership skills. Besides , it helps keep my mind fresh. Just plan your time well. Zhe Eu (4A‘s) : I don’t think so. You just have to manage your time well. Eiven Wong (4A’s) : Well... to be honest, it does sometimes. Nevertheless, it does help in self-development. Mei Funn (4A’s) : No, because I enjoy what I do. Rutheran (4A’s) : No. I mean they do help you in aspects of self-development. 6. Any advice to the Frees of today? Kuan Ming (4A’s) : To succeed you have to be willing to make sacrifices. Zhe Eu (4A‘s) : Plan your time well, study hard and study smart. Eiven Wong (4A’s) : Know your capabilities and push them to the limit.
