68 The Penang Free School Magazine At the beginning of the year, our energetic adviser, Mr. Tan Beng Theam, left us. We take this opportunity to thank him for the invaluable service he has rendered to the Club. In his place we welcome Mr. Cheng Hin. In last year's "Annual Tournament", our present chairman, Yeo Khee Nam emerged as the winner of the Championship Cup while Tan Soon lee was the runner-up. The Chess Club meets every Wednesday afternoon from three to five o'clock. During these two hours members can be seen deeply absorbed in games among themselves. Beginners' Classes conducted by Mr. Cheng Hin, our helpful adviser, were very popular. A lecture on Chinese Chess was also given by Mr. Cheng Hin and the game has now caught on well among the members. We are very thankful to our adviser who has sacrified much of his time in helping to raise the standard of chess in the Club. This year's "Lightning Tournament" has just concluded with Toh Kok Aun as the winner. This year the Chess Club played its first inter-school chess competition. Our opponent was the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar whom we beat by four matches to one. The following represented the Chess Club, Yeo Khee Nam, Tan Teng Nam, Lim Teong Poh, Lim Say Kiang and Ong Aye Ho. The second term is almost over and the Club is now planning for the final term an interesting programme which will include the "Annual Tournament" for the Championship Cup. Hon. Secretary. THE MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC SOCIETY Adviser Chairman Hon. Secretary Hon. Treasurer Business Choir Leader Mr. G. S. Reutens Miss Mary Cheah Eok Lim Harold Hszieh Miss Lim Swee Choo Miss Diana Ooi George Hszieh Ch'ng Eng Hock This year the Society is indeed fortunate in having many talented young men and women for its drama and music productions. Thanks largely to the girls it has been possible to form a school choir. The choir made its first appearance in the Festival of Drama, Music and Dancing, <1 successful concert which was organised mainly by the Society. This concert, the second held in Penang, brought much credit to !he Society and to the School. Our drama item, a scene from Pygmalian, was well received and given favourable mention by the Penang Arts Council and other drama criticis. Warmest congratulations are extended to Khoo Soo Ghee, our chairman of the Music Section, who was awarded an Arts Council silver medal for his outstanding performance on the piano.

The Penang Free School Magazine 69 The Society is producing two plays-"The Servan! of Two Masters" by Carlo Goldoni, and "Nol According lo Plan". We hope lo stage these plays in September. The Society wishes lo record ifs sincere appreciation for the generous help given by Mrs. J. M. B. Hughes in all its productions. An observer once remarked that the Free School was lacking in culture, particularly in Music and Drama. To-day, thanks to our adviser, that remark could hardly be justified as members of the Society continue to take an active interest in mallers of drama and music. THE STAMP CLUB Adviser Chairman Hon. Secretary Hon. T reasurcr Commil!ee Members Mr. Lim San Hoe Lee Yuk Yan Leong Keng San Cheah Oon Siew Lee Choy Fook Leong Yong Pak Koay Hong Keal Hon. Secretary. The Stamp Club was started in March, I 958. Since ifs inception ii has remained active and the present membership is 36. Membership has been limited to pupils of Form Ill downwards. Meetings were held once a month, on Fridays al 3 o'clock and attendance at each meeting was quite good. We aimed at making the programme for the year as interesting as possible by the inclusion of a quiz, stamp exchanges and auctions. We are also planning an outing to the General Post Office in the course of the year. It is also our object to encourage our members to exchange stamps with friends abroad, in particular with friends in Australia. A small contribution was made by members towards the purchase of magazines, etc. We would like to take this opportunity lo thank our Adviser, Mr. Lim San Hoe, and our Headmaster, Mr. Hughes, for their kind help and advice. With the continued interest in stamp-collecting shown by the members, we are sure that the Stamp Club will be able to function smoothly and offer its members all amenities in the pursuit of their hobby. Hon. Secretary.

70 The Penang Free School Magazine RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES FIRST GEORGETOWN SENIOR TROOP Scoutmaster Asst. Scoutmasters Troop leader Mr. Hwang Hong Shi lee Seng Teik Ong Tat Hin Lim Jin Chua The aim of scouting is to develop good citizenship among the boys so that they may be prepared for the various responsibilities that will face them in their later lives. With this object in view, tr.e programme of our troop has been planned so as to give the maximum benefit and satisfaction to the boys. So far, the Scouts have responded well to the efforts of the C.O.H. and the success of the group has been overwhelming. In our midst, we now have four Pengakap Rajas, four Bushman's Thongs and many up-and-coming Scouts. !n the beginning of the year, the troop was able, in conjunction with the other troops, to stage a successful and well-attended campfire. In addition, our Scouts are continuing to render public services at every possible occasion. To maintain this constant high standard, patrol competitions are frequently featured in our programme. It is inevitable that the troop should grow from strength to strength if the keenness of the Scouts and the efficiency of the C.O .H. continue to prevail. Whatever happens, we must bear constantly in mind the Scout laws and Promise while we play the game of Scouting. 7TH. GEORGETOWN Scouter Troop leader Hon. Secretary Hon. Treasurer (S) lee Seng Teik. BOY SCOUT TROOP Ibrahim Noordin Tan Ooi Seng V. Gopal Krishnan Teh Teong Sa The Troop was formed at the beginning of the year because the 1st. George Town (S) and the 8th. George Town (S) troops were unable to take any more boys. Twenty-four recruits were in the Troop at the beginning. There were four patrols, in which there were 10 Tenderpads. The uniform for the troop is a green Scout beret, a P.F.S. neckerchie f, a light grey Scout shirt, a pair of navy blue shorts and stockings, and black shoes. The first aim was to make all the recruits pass their tenderfoot badge. Nearing April there were ten Second Class Scouts and twenty-four Tenderpads. Campfires. Attendance was good at the District campfire and illso at the Penang Free School Campfire. Some boys were also present at the Chung ling High School Campfire.

The Penang Free School Magazine 71 Outings and Camps. Few outings have been held but those held were interesting, encouraging and successful. A three-night camp was held in Juru (Province Wellesley), in April. There were two hikes, and two outings. Further outings and camps are being planned. Public Services. Fifteen scouts helped in the Penang Free School sports. Our scouts also volunteered for the Shell Traffic Games, the Medical Services Sports and participated in the presentation of certificates to the Pengakap Rajas at the Residency. An investiture ceremony will take place on the 27th of July 1959. With the increasing interest shown by the scouts in this Troop, one would not be w rong in coming to the conclusion that the standard of scouting will again rise to its peak in Penang Free School. 8TH GEORGETO,VN GROUP Scoutmaster (Senior) - Scoutmaster (Boy Scout) AS.Ms. (Boy Scout) - Troop Leader (Boy Scout. Secretary (Senior) Secretary (Boy Scout) Mr. Ch'ng Eng Kee Mr. Khoo Kay Jee Mr. Khoo Beng Jin Mr. Teh Eng Chye Tan Cheng Peng Cheah Chooi Aik Choong Yoon T et Hon . Secretary. A new troop was formed this year, the 8th. Georgetown Senior Troop, und:r our capable and energetic Scoutmaster. Over 30 recruits from the Feeder Schools were admitted into the Boy Scout Troop. The present number of scouts in our group stands at 62. There are 17 Seniors and 45 Boy Scouts. Among them are 2 Bushman Thong holders, 3 Scout Corders, 5 First Class Scouts, 45 Second Class Scouts and the rest are in the Second Class level. A very enjoyable, successful, adventurous and memorable camping trip was made by our scouts to the Langkawi Islands, in December. We left in two parties, one by train and the other by bicycle, on the 9th. of December. We met at Alor Star where we stayed for some time before taking a boat to Pulau Langkawi. We were there for over a week before returning to Alor Star and then back to Penang. Our sincere thanks go to those who helped us, in particular the D.C. of Alor Star, the District Officer of Pulau Langkawi. Owing to this success we intend to make a trip to the South in December, this year. The "Camping Standard" was achieved by our Boy Scout Troop in March at the Coronation Camp. This is mainly due to the new scouts who have shown great interest at hikes, camps and other outings. In them we can be assured that the standard of Scouting in the Penang Free School will be raised in time to come. Over $200/ - were earned by us at the last Odd-Job Week. Some of our inte resting pro-

In the last combined camp-fire our troop played an important part not only in organising but also in providing three sketches. Our scou1s were on duty al many Public Services, among which were the Anti-Litter Campaign, St. John's Ambulance Brigade Cadets Camp, Wesak Day Procession, Shell Traffic Games and the Medical Sports. Our scouts were not only keen in duties but also in achieving a large number of Proficiency Badges. Our Group is very grateful to the following Old Frees: Mr. Khoo Kay Jee, Mr. Tan Beng Jin, Mr. Teh Eng Chye, and Mr. Yeoh Oon Sin who have sacrificed their spare time by helping as S.M. and A.S.Ms. in the Boy Scout Troop. We were sorry to loose Mr. Oon Sin who has left us due to his job and Mr. Lim Chin Hwa w ho is now working as a teacher. To them and to those who have left us the Group wishes them "Fair Winds and Good Hunting". Hon. Secretary (Senior). THE 8TH GEORGETOWN (P.F.S.) ROVER CREW Rover Scout Leader - Mr. G. S. Reutens Senior Rover Mate - Joseph Khor Hon. Secretary Abd. Rahim bin Abd. Rahman Hon. Treasurer Ong Aing Eng This year the Crew is only 12 strong compared with an enrolment of l 7 last year. Though all of us are "fresh" from the scout troop (except two who have been in the Crew since last year) we are fully aware of certain definite responsibilities we are undertaking as Rover Scouts-to be good men and true citizens. In 1he last few months we made a number of visits to places of educational interest. On February the 27th, we crosse d over to the mainland to the Royai' A•Jstralian A ir Force Station at Butterworth. On May 29th, we entered the walls of the Council Chamber to w itness the proceedings of a City Council meeting. In addition to these visits, weekend outings have become regula r features in our programmes. Our hike from Ayer ltam to Balik Pulau was very exciting and so was the hillside tramp from Ayer ltam across Penang Hill to Sungei P.inang West. We hope to do two more hikes during our August vacation and lo visit more places of interest during the course of the year. Our meetings on Mondays and Thursdays for the last few months were d evoted to improving our 'Scout Craft.' In addition we sometimes have talks given by our R.S.L. and by some of the members of the Crew. The Rover Scout branch of the Scout movement is described as a "Brotherhood of Service" and by joining it we are training ourselves to become true citizens and a credit to our country. May God give us streng1h to pursue our aim. Hon. Secretary.

The Penang Free School Magazine 73 -+-------------------~-' FEDERATION OF MALAYA AIR TRAINING CORPS No. 2 (Penang) Commanding Officer Adjutant Equipment Officer Other Officers Squadron FIi/ Lt. Ong Teong Guan F/O Tan Ah Fee F / 0 Joseph Choong P/O J. D. Dawson As the name of the Corps implies, we are in one way or another interested in aeronautics and the machines in the air. · This unit of ours is open to those who are 'air minded' and who would like to know a bit about Air Force life. The strength of our Squadron which consists of 3 Flights is 4 officers and l 00 cadets. The figures include l Warrant Officer, 4 Sergeants and 8 Corporals. There are 64 cadets from the Penang Free School, 31 from the St. Xavier's Institution, 4 from the Georgetown Secondary School and l from the Technical Institute. The Squadron holds its parades on Mondays at the Penang Free School and on Saturdays at the Territorial Army Parade ground in Peel Avenue. Parades on Mondays are devoted to instructional lectures on signalling (morse), Map Reading, Principles of Flight and Airmanship. Lectures on Meteorology, Armaments and Navigation will be given when the cadets finish their present courses. Parades on Saturdays consist mainly of foot and arms drill. Range work is also carried out with .22 Service rifles at the rifle range in Peel Avenue. Unfortunately for us in the early part of this year, we did not have the opportunity of gaining elementary air familiarisation in Auster Aircrafts of the Penang Flying Club which has in previous years rendered their services fo us generously. Our cadets long for such air experience and we have received news that we shall be given flights in the latter part of the year. This year the F.M.A.T.C. is offering a flying scholarship to its cadets. The Scholarship will enable the cadet to obta in a pilot's license. We have 2 applications from our Squadron, viz. W/ O Chan Peng Lau and AC l Lim Koon Beng. They have appeare d for their aptitude tests the results of which are still pending at the time of writing. The F.M.A.T.C. held its last annual camp in August at Kuala Lumpur. Eighty of our cadets were selected lo represent the Squadron in that camp. This year we expect more of our cadets lo be chosen lo attend the annual camp to be held at the R.A.F. Station in Kuala Lumpur in December. We find that we lose many an efficient cadet at the end of each year, for pupils have to leave school on comple tion of their school caree rs. Among those w ho left us were Flt/ Sgt. Jeyasingham, now in England, Sgt. Tan Kheng Huat and Sgt. Ang Thoon Seng both in New Zealand, Sgt. Koe Eng Jin, now in the University of Malaya, Flt./ Sgt. Oh Siong Tit and Sgt. Tunku Zainal Abi.din who is pursuing a course for a commercial Pilot's License in Jakarta. Towards the end of the l st Term, Sgt. Wong Peng Chee <esigned at his own request. We would like to wish these N.C.Os and those who le ft us and who had served the Corps so efficiently success in their new spheres of life. We are glad to record that when the Commandant visited us in the middle -0f the year, he was pleased to increase the strength of the Corps as a result of a very -strong appeal made by our commanding officer who has been continuously approached by boys for entry into the Corps. The Squadron wishes to thank the officers and the se rgeants of the Te rritoria l Army for their drill instructions and all others who have given their valuable help one way or another. W/O Chan Peng Lau.

74 The Penang Free School Magazine PENANG FREE SCHOOL CADET CORPS The Cadet Corps is formed with a view to providing recrui)s and possibly officers to the armed forces of this country and in this the Penang Free S;:hool Cadet Corps has not lagged far behind. A number of young promising officers in the Royal Malay Regiment and also in the Federation Regiment were, in their school days, members of this Cadet Corps. Today there are also a few Officer Cadets undergoing training in the Federation Military College and who not too long ago left the school where they had received their basic military training as Cadets. In the past the Corps has been trained by regular instructors from the British regiments who were stationed from time to time in Penang but after the attainment of ir.dependence, the responsibility of training the Cadets has been handed over to the country's own away. The F.M.V.R.C. took over from the beginning of last year and carried on the training until April this year when the Volunteers Corps was disbanded. Now the Corps is tra ined by the Permanent Staff of 1st Battalion (Penang) Territorial Army. Under the energetic instructors of 'E' Company and the Permanent Staff, the Cadets parade at the parade square of the Coy. HQ every Monday afternoon and in addition to this the Cadet N.C.O's. attend an N.C.O. Cadre Course every Saturday morning at the same place. In 1958, the first anniversary of Merdeheka was celebrated with a military Parade at the Esplanad e and at this Parade the Corps was represented by one Officer and twenty-three Other · Ranks and the same number also represented the Corps at the Parade held in honour of the Birthday of His Excellency the Governor in De cembe r. On Speech Day, last year, something diffarent was seen in the turnout of the Cade ts. Instead of the usual green, the Cadets turned out in full ceremonial white Dress witi, shining brass buttons and for the first time bayonets were fixed to their rifbs. The turnout was of a high order, and many complimentary remarks were overheard. The full strength of the Corps is four Officers and one hundred and three Other Ranks made up of two Warrant Officers, thirty-four in No. 1 Platoon, thirty-five in No. 2 Platoon, seventeen in the Reserve Platoon, and fifteen in the Band Section. Cadets in the Reserve Platoon are trained to the same level as those in the 'regular' Platoons and as the name implies they are the reserve of the Corps and they are transferred to the 'regular' Platoons whenever vacancies occur. The organisation of the Corps is as follows:- Commanding Officer C. S. M. C. Q. M. S. No. 1 Platoon Platoon Commander Platoon Sergeant Captain Md. Noor b . Mohamed E.D. Md. Khalil b . Md. Noor Md. The school relay te ams did not start off well this sports season. It is hoped tha t our runners w ill be more fortunate in future athletic meets. At the time of writing many boys not only in the Athletic Club but also in other activities are training hard for the Combine d School Sports which will be held on 9th, l 0th and 11th July. La st year the school won a good number of winner's and standard medals. The Masters concerned have helpe d to improve the ir standards considerably.

We heartily welcome Mr. Eddy Chung and Mr. Moey Chee Khuan to whom the Department is very indebted for their enthusiasm and solid backing. We have great pleasure in reporting that, for the first time, basketball colours were awarded last year to the following outstanding players: Tan Teng Nam, Chang Kok Wah, Teddy Lam. The following boys also received colours last year: Thong Kar Cheong, Lim Teng Eng, Goh Swee Hock, Chong Foong Khoon and Choong Pak Leng. This year's basketball team is represented by the following : Tan Teng Nam, Chang Kok Wah, Goh Swee Hock, Teddy Lam, Chong Foong Khoon, Choong Pak Leng, Oh Hong Choon, Ong Kok Swee, Chuah Ewe Teik, Ng Keang Moh, Wong Joo Ching, Lee Say Cheok, Cheah Eng Huat and Lim Kok Eng. The table-tennis section was set up in the third term of last year. The school took part in the first Penang Combined Schools' Table-Tennis Competition held in December, 1958. Miss Teoh Seng Hong of our school annexed the School Girls' Singles title and Yeoh Keng Hock ~nd Kee Yong Pheow were runners-up in the School Boys' Double.

The Penang Free School Magazine 77 The following boys are in the school team: Chang Kok Wah, Lim Say Lay, Ng Soon Gan, Tan Beng Khoon, Lee Kok Thye, Saw Wee Kee, Yip Weng Kong, Lim Say Hoo and Oh Kai Shek. It is lamentable that table-tennis, so popular a game, is not given due recognition in the school. We hope that through the effort and performance of the players, table-tennis will be raised to the status of badminton. Finally, we wish to express our sincere thanks to Mr. Yeo Siew Kial, a former Science teacher of the Penang Free School, for having so kindly donated $500/- for the construction of a basketball court. Hon. Secretary. SCHOOL GARDENING CLUB In the beginning of the year we found that the number of boys w ish ing lo join the Club was more than we could cope with. As a result, we were compelled to send some boys to the other activities of the school. The Club began with 119 members divided into thirteen sections but later the number of sections was increased to fifteen. As the number is over a hundred, we could only allot two to three beds to a section in the vegetable garden to which most boys like to be sent. On the other hand the biological garden offers ample opportunities for enthusiastic pupils lo do practical work in planting flowers and shrubs. The boys working in this garden are always faced with the problem of providing various plant specimens for experiments in the biological laboratory, and shrubs and flowers for decorating the school on Sports' Day and Speech Day. Many varieties of flowers like zinnias, balsam, sunflower, gladioli and marigold are planted. Ferns and flowerless shrubs are grown too. These plants are planted in pots containing soil mixed with compost. Weeding has lo be constantly and ·conscientiously done and sometimes artificial fertilizer has lo be used. A lot of manure is used in the preparation of vegetable beds in which maize, lady's fingers, kangkong, groundnuts and chillies are grown. In spite of dry spells, the crops are satisfactory. This year the growing of waler melon was experimented but found to be unsuitable. Nevertheless we are able to get waler melons about the size of a small coconut. The problem of exterminating pests like insects and snails gives the masters a big headache. Insecticides are being used but before we could deter them from further damage some young plants have been destroyed. On the whole the members are quite co-operative in their work and help in the smooth running of the Club. The attendance is good. Hon. Secretary.

78 The Penang Free School Magazine EXTRA GAMES DEPARTMENT Master-in-Charge Asst. Masters-in-Ch.:irge Mr. Teh Kheng Chooi Mr. Goh Teong Chye Mr. lskandar Md. Ismail Mr. P. Nadaraiah The Extra Games Department, started a few years ago, has proved a great success. All First Formers who join this section are taught the rudiments of games like Football, Cricket and Rugger. This year we intend to introduce a new gameSoftball. This game, almost like baseball, should prove very !)Opular with the boys. After a year in this department the boys then play for their House or the School if they are good. The fact that we have many young players in the School teams proves the success of the Extra Games Department. In inter-school matches a large number of Ex-Games boys can be seen supporting the school teams. Here we would like to explain that our objective is not only to teach the boys how to play the game but also to impart into them a greater knowledge of the major games so that they can enjoy watching the various games with greater interest. We not only teach them to play the game but also to be " trained" spectators who appreciate good play from both sides. THE JUDO CLUB Masters-in-Charge Captain Vice-Captain Secretary Mr. Quah Seng Chye Mr. Moey Chee Kuan Ho Tet Kheong Tang Hon Yin Oon Lye Hock Hon. Secretary. Many people seem to think that Judo is an art learnt by people to harm their fellowmen. But it is actually a sport. The P.F.S. Judo Club formed last year with only fourteen boys, has twentyeight members now, more than half of which are young boys who joined the club early this year. Practices are held on Wednesday afternoons. Each practice begins with "Ukemi " (breakfalls) which serves as warming up e xercises as well. The class then has "Randori " during which the boys practise and revise whatever throws they like. After that the beginners might be taught a new throw or asked lo practise a particular throw for mastery. The class usually ends with a short session of "Shobe" which is a friendly contest among the boys. Attendance h,as been good and the enthusiasm shown by the boys brings hope of having more members in the near future. Hon. Secretary

The Penang Free School Magazine Coaches Captain Vice-Captain Hon. Secretary BOXING CLUB Mr. Quah Seng Chye Mr. Moey Chee Khuan Loo Hock Keat Goh Hee Boon Ch'ng Eng Hock 79 After a lapse of about seven years boxing was revived last year, through the interest and initiative of Mr. Teoh Cheng Hai in the Penang Free School. Under his watchful eye and able coaching, the slandard of boxing was raised tremendously. We report with great regret that his instructions are no longer available. At present we have Mr. Seng Chye and Mr. Moey Chee Khuan as our coaches and they are carrying on the work efficiently. The club started this year with a membership of forty-:::?ight but this number slowly dwindled to thirty-six at the time of writing. Membership is restricted to boys in Forms Tw o to Five and practices are ca rried on once a week. During the mon th of May, the progress of this class was retarded considerably because the gymnastic practices in preparation for Sports Day coincided with our boxing practices. After Sports Da y the boxing practices continued normally for a few weeks before they were slopped because of the second term examinations in June. At present, we run the great risk of getting injured because we have no suitable boxing ring and have insufficient boxing materials. Thus we have not been able to undergo serious training which will enable us to meet other boxing teams. As we lack boxing equipment we have to take turns in using the gloves for sparring -or the mittens for punching at the bags. Anyway, we have had an enjoyable time learning the sport. We only hope to have better facilities for boxing in the nea r future . GYMNASTIC Master-in-charge Captain Vice-captain Hon. Secretary SQUAD Mr. Quah Seng Chye Cheong Foong Khoon Koay Meng Chye Khaw Poh Tit Hon. Secretary. After a lapse of many years the school gymnastic squad was started again in late March this year. The strength of the squad is 24 but we hope to take in more junior boys in the near future. Most of the boys though they do not know much about g ymnastics as yet are "keen. They turn up for practices regularly. Practices are held once a week in one of the two quadrangles of the school. Each practice consists of vaults, agility exercises and pyramid building. Despite the brief period of training, the young gymnasts put up a show on Sports Day. Hon . Secretary.

The Penang Free School Magazine 81 To prepare ourselves for Inter-School matches, we found it necessary, early in the year, to arrange friendly matches against local club teams, such as the Chinese Wanderers and the Chinese Recreation Club. Our opponents berng adults, were bigger and more experienced, and in the first five matches (we lost all games), we had a difficult task indeed chasing after the ball. Nevertheless, these practice games gave us the opportunity of p laying as a _team and they certainly gave our boys the added experience which is so important in all games. Of the seven Inter-School matches we played this season, we lost twice and won the remaining five matches. The school beat the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar, by 3-2 in the annual match for the Sultan lskander Cup. We were leading comfortably by 3-nil when our goalkeeper, Teddy Lam, was carried off the field after sustaining a serious knee injury in the middle of the game. Although we were then o ne p layer short, our defenders stood up gallantly and the equally determined Col legians could succeed only twice in penetrating our defence. At the end of the game, His Highness, the Sultan of Perak, ~resented the Trophy. In the Penang Inter-Schoo l Soccer Tournament, we trounced the St. Xaviers Institution by 9-2, Mohd Anis, scoring seven of our goals. We would have emerged champions of the Tournament had we not been unlucky enough to be beaten 2-3 by the Chung Ling High School. All who saw the game were delighted by the performances of both teams and many thought that a draw would have been more fitting to such an evenly contested match. We are proud to mention that five boys from our school were chosen to represent the Penang Combined Schools against Kedah and . Perak. They were: Lim Say Chong, Mohd Anis, lzham, Khoo Yang Beng, and Koe Eng Ghee. In the North vs. South "classic" played at the City Stadium on 16th June, Say Chong, lzham and Eng Ghee were selected to play for the North Combined Schools. The South won by 4-2. Say Chong and Eng Ghee received the rare distinction of being chosen lo represent the country in the 1st Asian Youth Soccer Games held at the Merdeka Stadium from the 16th-25th April. Congratulations go to the following boys who were awarded school colours for 1958. They were:-Huang Soon Hiang, Aman Noor Rashid, Osman Ariffin, Koe Eng Ghee, Lim Say Chong (reaward), and Mohd Anis (reaward). The School Football Section takes this opportunity of thanking Mr. Yeap Cheng Eng, the well-known State left winger and captain of the Chinese Wanderers for his invaluable hints to our boys during practices. We also greatly appreciate the interest shown by our very enthusiastic Headmaster; his presence in practically all our school football matches has always been a great inspiration to the team. The Junior Team was first started last year for boys of Forms IV and below with the motive of training the younger players so that they can take the place of the Seniors by the time they r:::ach the higher forms. Friendly matches were arranged against many teams and the School Team was very successfu, in winning all of them. This year is, perhaps, 1he most successful year tor the School Team. In the Malayan Inter-Schools Championships, first organised this year, our School becam::: th ::: first holders of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's Challen9e Cup- it is only fitting that the oldest school should have the honour of being the first holder. Our captai n, Lee Chong Hoe, Penang Junior Singles Champion 1958, was selected to join the Thomas Cup training squad because of his brilliant performances during the Championships. Not only did the Team as a whole do well in the various championships, but the individual players also achieved successes for themselves. In the 1958 Penang and Province Wellesley Combined Schools Championships, Chin Wah Seng and Mohd. Ani5 Isa captured the doubles title whilst the former was also the runner-up in the singles. In the Penang Malays Badminton Tournament 1958, Mohd Anis Isa and Mohd. Zain Yus:.if won the junior doubles title, the former also winning the junior singles event. He was also selected to represent the Penang Malays in the inte r-State Rahman Cup Competition. Lim Say Lay, our junior team captain, made a name for himself among the youngsters by winning both the singles and doubles title (with Kung Be ng Hong) in the Novices Championships. In the 1959 Penang and Province Wellesley Combine d Schools Championships which were held recently, our school was represented in both the boys' and g irls' doubles in the finals. Out of the s~venteen matches played last year, we won seven, drew three, and lost the remainder. We won the two inter-school matches, namely against the King Edward VII School, Taiping, and the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar. Participating in the Penang league for the first time, we won two of the fixtures and lost four. We are proud to record that with the exception of three players the whole of the Penang Combined S: hools team consisted of Frees. This team beat a strong Perak Schools side al lpoh. The following boys were awarded colours for the year 1958:- •Surjit Singh, H'ng Hung Meng, Tan Khuan Khean, Khoo Kay Sar, Ong Tat lien, Thong Kar Cheong (re-award), Ong Eng San (re-award), Jeyasingham (re-award). The present members of the Cricket Section, sincerely wish all those players who have left us the best of luck in their new walks of life. The year 1959 saw us field a comparatively young team. Undaunted, the boys attended e xtra practices al the C.R.C. and P.S.C. To gain experience, we joined the Penang league. So far we have been doing extremel1/ well, for we have only be en beaten by the league winners, the C.R.C. In the D'rcy Irvine Cup Competition, we created a s:rnsation when we dismissed our old rivals, S.X. I. for four runs, a record in loca I cricket. During the visit of Peter Richardson, the M.C.C. opening bat, two of our boys, Ong Eng San, our skipper, and Chong Soon Khean, our energetic w icket-keeper, were awarded cricket bats for being the most promising cricketers in the State. Richardson also took an interest in our Form One stylish bat, Zainuddin Meah. From Richardson

84 The Penang Free School Magazine we received many hints on the finer points ·of the game, and we are grateful lo him for the interest he showed in us. Ong Eng San and Chong Soon Khean also played for the Rest in the annual "Europeans vs. Rest" match. Both have also been selected for the State but have been unable lo play because of other commitments. As yet we have played off thirteen matches of which we won six, lost four and drew three. We are looking forward to securing a place in the Penang League and also to doing well in the D'rcy Irvine Cup competition, the final of which will be olayed off soon. We will be meeting the High School, Bukit Merta jam. The following boys represented the school:- Ong Eng San, Chong Soon Khean, Tan Khuan Khean, S. M. Lingam, Ong Tat Hin, P. The P.S.C. for letting us use their nets for practices. Mr. Koay Kok Chiang, an old boy and keen supporter of the School team, for donating two pairs of cricket pads. Dr. Tan Boon Beng for kindly donating half a dozen cricket balls to the School Team. Our Headmaster, whose presence at the nets and during matches has indeed been inspiring. 86 The Penang Free ?ch_ool Magazine In spite of the loss of four of our last year's players, our side was just as formidable as ever. The secret of this formidability lies in the fact that, as soon as we stepped into the hockey pitch, we forgot that our individual selves existed, and we played as a team. Our second hockey XI played seven games, winning four, and losing three. The third team won both of the games they played. For many years, the Penang Free School has been fielding three hockey teams, the reason being that we want lo give every boy, who is keen on the game, a chance to represent the school. We believe that _ good, clean hockey, w ith the emphasis on team-work and co-operation, can help build a sound character. Hockey colours were awarded to H' ng Hung Meng, Koe Eng Gh'ee and Mohd. Anis for their outstanding performances. Ch'ng Eng Keat, Surjit Singh, Koe Eng Jin, Khoo Soo Keat, Lim Say Chong and Ong Eng San received re-awards for having maintained their high standard of hockey. RUGBY FOOTBALL REPORT Coach Assistant Coaches Captain Vice-Captain Hon. Secretary 1958 1959 Mr. Tan Ah Fee Mr. Quah Seng Chye Mr. Goh T eong Chye Tan Kheng Huat Hassan bin Salim Wong Peng Chee Hon. Secretary. The fallacy that rugby football is a dangerous game must be removed from the minds of over-cautious parents. Rugby Football is a tough game but it is not necessarily rough. It brings out the very best in a boy. It demands a high standard of team spirit, sportsmanship and fitness. A season of rugger enables a boy to possess a tough, lithe body and an agile mind. At the beginning of last year the International Rugby Football Board revised the rules to speed up the game and decrease the number of stoppages. The School Team has trained assiduously following the new rules and there is no doubt that these rules have made rugger faster and more interesting to both players and spectators. We have had a healthy season with a good share of wins and a fair share of losses. We were very disappointed when we lost aga in to King Edw.ird VII , Taiping. We shall have to entrust next season's team with the onerous task of breaking the K. E. VII jinx for we have never beaten them in all these years of competition after the war.

The Penang Free School Magazine 87 We faced the Ma lay College team resolutely though knowing full well that theirs was no vain claim to be Malaya's strongest school fifteen having met and defeated their new-forme d team last season by only 6-5. A very determined School team bowed out to a 6-3 defeat, but no one, having seen the game, could say that we lost with ignominy. Free School played the game and lost to a truly better team. In the Seven-a-side Rugger Tournament held at Kuala Lumpur, we went through two round s o n ly to be stopped by the strong M.C.K.K. 'A' team. At the beg inning of the season we bad e fa rewell to a number of School players who have serve d so ably and so well on tne fiel d . We wish them well in their new undertakings. Next seaso n the rugger team w ill experience a great loss as our coach, Mr. Tan ·Ah Fee, le aves us to take up the more impo rta nt post of Games Club Chairman. We offer our congratulations a nd hope that he may continue to give us his moral support. Mr. Seng Chye will ta ke over the d uties of Coach. The members of the rugger team place every confidence in him. His youthful zeal, dynamic energy and physical fitness had been a constant source of inspiration to the rugger players. Attenda nce during Tennis pra~tices, which are held every Friday and Saturday on the courts of the St. George's Girls' School, has always been e ncouraging. 88 The Penang Free School Magazin~ In the annual encounter against the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar, a total of seven matches were played. We were victorious, winning by five matches lo two, but we must congratulate our opponents for their great effort and fine sportsmanship. Our guests were later entertained to a dinner and were accommodated for the night in our Vllh Form domilory. For the first time, members of our Section en:ered for the Pcnang Schoolboys' Championships, and it is surprising to know how well we did in the Tournament. Our boys dominated the Singles event and we are proud to mention that all the four semifinalists came from our school. Special mention must be made of Tan Seng Jin, for h is outstanding performance in the Tournament. Seng Jin captured both the Singles and the Doubles events. The results of the Tournament are very encouraging for they point to the fact that there has been a definite improvement in the standard of the game among our boys . If our members continue to play the game with interest, we are confident that Tennis will one day take its rightful place among the major games of the school. The following boys represented the school this year: Tan Song Kean, Ong Tat Hin, Tan Seng Jin, Kok Weng On, Tan Poh Seng, Lim Sow Kooi, Tan Beng Khoon, Lee Chong San, Mohamed Hamid, Tan Seng Guan, and Koe Eng Ghee. Coach Asst. Coach Captain Hon. Secretary SWIMMING Mr. Eddy Chung Mr. Hwang Hong Shi Chan Peng Lau Lim Chin Teik Hon. Secretary . Although most of the 'older' sw immers have left us, the strength of the swimming section is almost the same. This is due to the fact that the 'younger' boys are extremely interested in learning how to swim. This year, we regret to note that our Asst. Swimming Coach, Mr. Khoo Tiang Lim, has had to leave us. In return we welcome Mr. Hwang Hong Shi as our new Asst. Swimming Coach. At present the members of the swimming section are training for the coming Combined Schools' Swimming Competition and our own Swimming Competition. From last year's excellent record, our swimmers will do well in these two meets. The usual Life Saving Class will be held during the third term. School Swimming Colours were awarded to the following: Lim Chin Teik (School Swimming Colours for 1958), Chan Peng I.au and Lee Kong Hean (reaward of School Swimming Colours for 1958). Finally, we wish lo thank the Penang Chinese Swimming Club for so k indly ;illowing us to use the club premises during our practice days. Hon. Secretary.

Our soccer team set the pace off by annexing the Hamilton Cup. In athletics, the House was placed a close third in the Annual Sports. Our athletes, however, put up a creditable performance in keeping the colours of the House flying till the very end. The House would like to congratulate Md. Anwar, our Asst. In cricket, however, we are in an unenviable position but in badminton, we are well placed. We hope to win the badminton trophy and register yet another success for the House. This year, the House had a complete change of House officials. We lost the services of our House Master, Mr. Cheah Gynn Seong and our Asst. House Masters, Mr. G. M. Thomasz and Mr. G. S. Reutens. We thank them for all they had done for the House. In their places, we welcome Messrs. We failed to secure any of the trophies for Football, Cricket and Badminton, and had to be content with only third place in the Additional Sports, and fourth place in the Annual Athletic Sports. However, we are glad that many of our younger members played their part exceptionally well in Inter-House games and sports, although they had so often to meet with strong opposition from the other Houses. They are a lesson to the older boys that only through strong determination and co-operation on the part of each and every member of the Hous~ that we can succeed in getting nearer to our goal. With this note we hope the House will step onto the field more courageously when we meet the other Houses at Hockey and Rugger in the third term. Our congratulations go to those boys who were awarded school colours last year. We also congratulate Koe Eng Ghee for having earned himself a place in the Malayan "under twenty" in the first Asian Youth Soccer Tournament. We wish to extend our warm congratulation to Khoo Kean Huat and our popular Cricket Captain, Ang Thoong Seng, who were both awarded Colombo Plan Scholarships last year to further their studies in New Zealand. Teoh Eng Hong (Scouting Capt.) Ben Azman (Debating Capt.) Through the years, Pinhorn House has been able to earn for itself a reputation in both sports and academic fields. We hold in high esteem those ex-Pinhornians who have brought so much glory and renown to the house. Their association with the house will long be remembered. They leave in their wake a trail of light that guides our present young members along the right path to success. This year the house has had a most successful run in the major inter-house competitions. The boys are giving their gallant support to the House and showing themselves capable of maintaining its good reputation. We have so far annexed two rnveted trop~ies, in Additional Sports (in which we tied with Hamilton House), and in cricket. Besides this, we were runners-up in the Soccer knock-out and rugger competitions. These achievements are by no means insignificant. However, they have not eclipsed in any way some of the outstanding performances of our boys. Our house captain, Lim Say Chong, dribbled his way into the limelight, when he won for himself a place in the Malayan team for the Junior Asia Soccer Cup Competition. Another outstanding Pinhornian, Md. Anis, created a double when he was selected to represent Penang Combined Schools in both badminton and soccer. The successes in the sports field have enhanced considerably the morale of the house. We can afford at this stage to take an optimistic view of the other competitions yet to come. However, the house should on no account, attempt to rest on its laurels. I hope the boys will continue to work as a united body with the common purpose of serving the house. All along the encouragement and advice given to us by our competent 1-iouse Master, Mr. Lim San Hoe, and his assistants, Messrs. Tan Beng Theam and Benedict fair, have produced gratifying results. Right now, we stand on the threshold of success. Hon. Secretary.

The Penang Free School Magazine 97 ~ -~ ~ LETTER FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA The Magazine of the Penang Free School, Penang Free School, Penang. Dear Editor, The University of Malaya, Singapore. 2nd. August, 1959. I am grateful for having been given this opportunity of saying something in th.is issue of our magazine. Penang Free School was the place where I was g•iven my first real chance in life, not only in tt->e classroom, but also outside it, on the playingfield, in the various societies and in the Board of Prefects. It was as if ii were yesterday when I first stepped into its portals. That first day in the Penang · Free School was a memorable day. I was arrested by its impressive building and. its extensive and verdant field; I remember holding a certain reverential fear at the sight of its aweinspiring headmaster, Mr. Tod, during my first assembly there and as · I thought of its history, enriched by its many long-standing traditions, diverse societies and · sporting rep utation, I was smugly satisfied with the conviction that it had been a worthwhile effort getting myself to the Penang Fre~ School. Those of you who are still in this school will probably not realise and appreciate the kind of training that this school has to offer until like me you have departed from its fold. As a sma ll boy there, my one obsession was to enjoy myself as much as possible, quite often at the expense of the many young masters· who taught me. But as I grew up I found that there was more than . enough scope for the training of leadership and organisation. I am glad that I was given a fair share of responsibilities during my seven years in this school for I believe that with the shouldering of responsibilities comes the maturing of out-look and the better equipme nt for life ahead. Penang Free School is a place which affords such a kind of 1raining. It is up to us to make the best use of it. Lastly, a word to those of you responsible for this :year's issue of the magazine. Producing a magazine is by no means a sinecure, much less the last lap of putting it through to the press. However, I am sure the work of the Editorial Board is made much easier by such support as is exhibited by the boys themselves year by year, in the writing of articles and reports. This fact, I can safely say, the boys w ill heartily endorse. So I wish the members of the Board a very pleasant period of office, the boys, enjoyable reading on October 21 and everybody, a very successful year. Yours sincerely, Koe Eng Jin.
