Editorial - A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step - Confucius Salam fellow students, teachers and dearest readers. As the editor, I present to all of you, in all its glory, the Penang Free School Magazine, Volume 12 No. 4, of the year 2011. Readers will surely appreciate that the conception and completion of this magazine was a Herculean task, only made possible by the efforts of not one but many. The Editorial Board Term 2010/11 hopes that you will enjoy looking through the content, whether it be the expertly-taken pictures, interesting text, or even the creative background designs. There were fears that this year’s magazine would not be completed in time for Speech Day, or in fact completed at all. Some had feared that the magazine would not be up to the expectations of the readers. It would be, frankly speaking, insane to say that the undertaking of this magazine was not without hindrance. On the outset, the Editorial Board this year was severely undermanned and suffered from a lack of manpower, with only 21 members in total as opposed to having 17 trainees and just as many seniors. Despite the maelstrom of confusion, despair and grim pessimism, all of us played our parts sufficiently to deliver, and deliver we did. It all turned out well enough, after going through all the yellings, hair-pulling, and chair-lifting. Trust me, having been in the business for three years, lifting those chairs and benches has never stopped tiring us. Napoleon Bonaparte had once said, “When I focus only on the objective, all the obstacles become void.” It is with that principle in mind that we drove ourselves to complete this magazine. It would be an injustice to forget those who have sacrificed so much for this magazine, and it is with this I wish to thank everyone who was involved, however peripheral or direct, in the creation of this magazine, chiefly being the indefatigable Mr. Goh Seng Kar, who has never lost his drive to push us ever forward. To OFA Penang, we wish to express our appreciation and thanks for the support. Also in our debt is the esteemed and venerable Dato’ Syed Mohamad Aidid for providing the major part of the funds, without which we would not be able to print this magazine. Well, I guess that’s enough from me. Without further adieu, I welcome you to the School Magazine of 2011, courtesy of the in members of the Editorial Board and their associated accomplices!

Selamat Maju Jaya. TN. HJ.
Sekian, terima kasih. TN. HJ. AHMAD TARMIZI BIN KAMARUDDIN Pengarah Pelajaran Pulau Pinang
Message PIBG Chairman 10 Dear Readers, I would like to thank the Penang Free School Editorial Board for giving me the opportunity to pen a few words in the prestigious school magazine. Having had the distinct honour of being the chairman of the PFS PIBG, I have experienced firsthand the dedication and hospitality of all the members of the committee in working towards a betterment in the quality of students’ life. The various events organized throughout our term together were carried out splendidly, and it was a comfort to know that we have succeeded in fulfilling our objectives. The events would not have been made possible without the helping hands of everyone, especially the parents and you, my fellow Free! The odyssey of every student begins with a single step and it begins here, in the hallowed halls of the school. One learns the science of life and embraces the art of learning, the very foundation of being laden with academic satisfaction while in school. Along with the great company and dedicated line of educators, learning could be fun! Throughout the term of 2010/2011, the PIBG has collaborated with the school administrators to organize various events. The turnout for last year’s Annual General Meeting of the PIBG was encouraging, and I was inspired by the concern of the parents pertaining to the welfare of the school and the students. Improvements were made where due and I hope that the upcoming board would contribute further for the benefit of the school and her students. I would like to again, thank my fellow comrades in the 2010/2011 PFS PIBG for their relentless support and innovative ideas throughout the term. It made me proud to see a better understanding being fostered between the school and the parents, and between the students and their parents. Many thanks to everyone who had participated and given their very best in our journey together. Before I end, I thank and congratulate the ever-efficient Editorial Board of the Penang Free School for bestowing me the honour of scribbling down a few thoughts in the Magazine. Fortis Atque Fidelis BOOPALAN A/L MANICKAM PJM, PJK Chairman Parents and Teachers’ Association 2011-2012
Message Headmaster’s Message 11 Greetings to all readers, First and foremost, I would like to congratulate and thank the Editorial Board for successfully producing the annual magazine of the Frees for the year 2011. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the various parties who have faithfully supported and contributed to the development of the school and this magazine. Being the Principal of this Cluster school, it is my passion to see my students carry on with the tradition of achieving excellence in all areas – academics, co-curriculums and most importantly, character building. I believe with the unswerving commitment from the staff and students of Penang Free School, we would be able to reach greater heights and further raising the bar of excellence of this school. Penang Free School is truly a school for Scholars, Sportsmen and Gentlemen. Therefore, I am responsible for achieving and maintaining this golden standard of the school. I trust that each and every one of my students can and will attain these aspects as students of this esteemed school. It only takes a belief in one’s ability, a desire to change, and a heart to take action in order to reach one’s maximum potential and capability. Finally, I hope that the present Frees will go all out to really be the best that they can be, and give the best that they can give for the betterment of all. Let us stay strong and faithful to the Grand Old Lady. Thank you. FORTIS ATQUE FIDELIS. TUAN HAJI RAMLI BIN DIN Headmaster Penang Free School
Tribute Mr. Woo Kok Ho 12 Mr. Woo Kok Ho first stepped foot into Penang Free School 15 years ago on the 1st of December 1996, during the term of the headmaster, Mr. Hj. Ismail bin Ibramsa. Mr Woo Kok Ho attended St. Xavier’s Institution at Farquhar Street, Penang for his primary and secondary education along with his sixth form studies. He then went through his tertiary education at the University of Science Malaysia, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Mr. Woo’s teaching career began in Kelantan. After seven years there, he was then transferred to Perak where he spent another six years teaching in that state. Thereupon, he taught at SMK Sacred Heart, Penang, for two years and at SMK Teluk Kumbar, Penang, for another two years, before joining the Grand Old Lady. In Penang Free School, Mr Woo started off teaching Mathematics for Form Three, Four and Five. Later, he taught Mathematics for Form Six. Mr. Woo had received the award of serving the school for a minimum of 15 years. Besides being a dedicated Mathematics teacher, Mr. Woo had also contributed greatly to the Wu Lien Teh Sports House. Under his tenure as the Wu Lien Teh house master, this sports house has emerged as champion in sports at school level for seven consecutive years. We commemorate this noble teacher for his dedication in the school amongst colleagues and students. We are beyond grateful towards Mr. Woo Kok Ho for his service in Penang Free School. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for all his contributions towards the school, and wish Mr. Woo a joyous retirement.
Tribute Mr. Khor Bean Hwa 13 When it comes down to Mathematics, no one was as fluent in the language of number as Mr. Khor Bean Hwa. We are glad to have a great mentor in this school, and a great friend. Even at birth, Mr. Khor was bonded to numbers – being the third child of his family, and having 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He studied at Jelutong Primary School, and then followed by Jelutong Secondary School. The prestigious Technical Institute was next in line to open its doors to him, before he finally graduated with Mathematics and Physics in Education from USM. Mr. Khor started his teaching career at St. Johns Institution, Kuala Lumpur. His second school was St. Xavier Institution, Penang. Seven years later, voila! Free School has a teacher with the greatest of dedication for the next 18 years. In PFS, Mr.Khor has never ceased in his dedication in all things Maths and Chess – the two loves of his life, not counting his wife and family of course. He was always seen teaching the students on either one with fervor and pride, pride in knowing that his student made the right choice to fill their leisure time wisely. There never was a dull moment in Mr. Khor’s class, as he would never use any normal teaching methods such as reading from a textbook, oh no, his “textbook” was his mind. Not only would he teach us the required knowledge for our exams, but he would also teach many proofs and theories that would enhance our knowledge in that particular topic. It was wonderful having a teacher like Mr. Khor. We would truly miss you, as would the school. We would like to extend our utmost gratitude for your hard work and contribution to this school. Thank you Mr. Khor, and keep being awesome!
Tribute Tun Lim Chong Eu 14 To be a Free in itself is a great honour; but to be both a Free and the former Chief Minister of Penang is a double-fold honour. Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Lim Chong Eu was the second Chief Minister of Penang from 1969 to 1990 who transformed Penang into an industrialised state. Thus, He is fondly known as ‘The Father of Industrialisation and Modern Penang’ or the ‘Architect of Modern Penang’. Tun Lim was a Senior Prefect in Penang Free School and even won prizes for History, Latin, English Language and Literature. Being an all-rounder, Tun Lim was also the Hargreaves House Captain, Chairman of the Literary and Debating Society, and the Editor of the School Magazine. His famed oratory powers are attributed to his participation as an active debater in school. He was popularly known as ‘shucks’ because he constantly used that peculiar American exclamation. During his schooling days, he objected strongly to biased and pedantic concepts but would rather have the issue explained in a manner understandable to him. Tun Lim once said in an interview “I would accept one plus one equals two not because the master said so but because of the structure of thinking”. He truly believed that ‘Knowledge by itself is a good thing but understanding is even more important’. As a Queen’s Scholar, he obtained a degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. During his tenure as Penang’s second Chief Minister, Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Lim Chong Eu contributed greatly to the economy of Penang as well as the economy of Malaysia. Penang earn the tag ‘Silicon Valley of the East’ after he implemented the Free Trade Zone concept which attracted a variety of foreign investments. He also played a vital role in the development of infrastructure by clearing pre-war houses to build the iconic 65-storey KOMTAR and also building our Penang Bridge. After his death on November 24, 2010, the 17.84km Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu Expressway comprising of the Jelutong Expressway and the Bayan Lepas Expressway was renamed after him. Penang has definitely lost one of its most illustrious sons, one who was proud to have the ‘Free School Spirit’.
Tribute Mr. JMB Hughes 15 “Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross, then having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own.” - Nikos Kazantzakis Mr J.M.B Hughes is one of those ideal teachers. He is a legendary figure who has made his mark on the history of Penang Free School. He was the Headmaster of the Grand Old Lady from 1957 to 1963. His burning passion for the school is magnified through his visits to the school four times since his retirement. No other headmaster of Penang Free School had ever made such an impact and formed such a rapport with the school after his term was up. Mr. Hughes was born in England in 1917 and was educated at the prestigious Oxford University. In 1939, the war had broken out and this led to Mr. Hughes spending the next seven years in the Indian Army. He “got a taste for the East which explains why he came here”. After experiencing the poverty-stricken streets of Calcutta, Mr. Hughes realized the vast disparity between the developed world and these deprived places. Thus, he believed that the world should work together towards the same goal and no better place than Malaysia with her different ethnic groups can demonstrate this. Mr. Hughes taught in Penang Free School for four years and outshone the local staff as he was definitely able to gel with the students. He was said in an interview: “I have found it difficult for a teacher to teach or for pupils to learn unless they know each other”. Hence, Mr. Hughes took his students on educational trips to Langkawi for three years in a row to get to know them better. Besides that, he also had a hand in creating one common staff room for the Malaysian staff and the European staff; which were originally split up and had prevented the integration of ideas and culture. As the headmaster, Mr. Hughes was the first to give a speech in ‘Bahasa Malaysia’ during Speech Day. This highlights his courage and perseverance in learning the new language, which was only spoken well by those of Malay origin during the post-colonial era. Furthermore, he had always emphasized on the quality of education in Penang Free School. Mr. Hughes believed that this quality covers many aspects; for instance academic quality, sporting quality and the quality of treating people as individuals and fairly. His ever-popular quote still rings in our hearts today, “If we really try and if we really work for it, we can find the answer and make a difference”.
Time and tide waits for no man but is it too much to ask to stop and reflect? How long has it been since you last set eyes on your old classmates? Don’t you wish you could just catch-up, relive the golden carefree days or talk about that timeswhen you almost set the class on fire? How about just wanting to check up on how the OFA’s doing? Well, this is the section for you. Go ahead, turn the pages and check the OFA. Look at the names of the office bearers and see if they are familiar. ‘Old Frees’ is devoted to honouring all you Frees who have once served under the Grand Old Lady. Memories will surface and it is only right we let it. After all, you are part and parcel of the school. Featured this year is OFA Penang, OFA Selangor, OFMA (Old Frees Muslim Association) and the PFS foundation. Sincere thanks to Mr Goh for all the guidance in this section throughout the year. It has been a pleasure and an honour serving as a student under you. Keep that flame and love for the Grand Old Lady burning for an eternity. It is only right to do so. ‘Once A Free, Always A Free’ Kyle Chan Greetings ! This section exemplifies the administration of Penang Free School. The administration is highly important to shape the vision and mission of our school and to ensure education is carried out effectively. Adding to that, inspiring teachers propel students to reach for the stars and to achieve greater heights. William Arthur Ward once said : “The mediocre teacher tells, the good teacher explains, the superior teacher demonstrates, the great teacher inspires.” Penang Free School is blessed with so many great teachers who also educate and instil moral values in their students’ lives. I would like to thank the administrative staff and all teachers for their punctuality and cooperation during the photo shoots. Adding to that, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the trainees who carried chairs and executed the photo shoots with enthusiasm and precision. Finally, a big thanks to Mr. Goh Seng Kar for his help in arranging and adjusting the teachers’ positions for the photo shoots. Thus, I present to you the Administration section.

Time and tide waits for no man but is it too much to ask to stop and reflect? How long has it been since you last set eyes on your old classmates? Don’t you wish you could just catch-up, relive the golden carefree days or talk about those times when you almost set the class on fire? ‘Once A Free, Always A Free’
Old Frees Old Frees’ Association Penang - President’s Message 30 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE OLD FREES’ ASSOCIATION Becoming the President of The Old Frees’ Association, founded in 1923, is a great honour, but the greater honour is to have been part of the Penang Free School, founded in 1816. PFS was established to be free and open to all, irrespective of creed. Similarly, The Old Frees’ Association is open to all former pupils and teachers, regardless of age, race, religion, profession or business. The association’s main objective is to keep former pupils and teachers in touch with each other and with the alma mater, and to actively further the interests and success of the school. The Old Frees’ Association is thus willing to support and guide pupils to achieve excellence in academic, sports and co-curricular activities. This year the OFA has allocated RM50.000 for the school’s activities and RM25.000 for activities to celebrate the school’s bicentenary in 2016. The association also allocated RM8,200 from the OFA Sesquicentenary Education Fund to help successful and needy pupils to obtain tertiary education at any Malaysian institution of higher learning. These are clear testaments that the OFA is leading the way to reach out to the school. As the home of all Old Frees, we invite all pupils and teachers to become members of The Old Frees’ Association to keep alive the Free School spirit by maintaining ties with each other and with the alma mater. Members are allowed to use and enjoy facilities such as gymnasium, computer room, TV room, library, tennis courts, cafeteria and karaoke. They can also take part in sports such as tennis, football, badminton, tabletennis, cycling and billiards. The association is soon to have another clubhouse, near Queensbay Mall, at No. L17 - L23, Lorong Bayan Indah 3, Bay Avenue, Bayan Lepas, Penang. It will be known as The OFA Annex Clubhouse at Bay Avenue. The OFA takes this opportunity to congratulate pupils and teachers for having successfully staged a marvelous musical drama, Beauty & the Beast. It augurs well for PFS leading the way as a cluster school, by keeping up its high standards of achievement in Performing Arts and the English Language. Those pupils who were involved in organizing, or who performed in the musical drama would have benefited from the experience and learned some lessons that cannot be taught in the classroom. The Old Frees’ Association fervently hopes that pupils of Penang Free School will always strive hard to restore and maintain the pride and the glory of the school. “Fortis Atque Fidelis” M.S. Rajendren President

It is only right to do so. ‘Once A Free, Always A Free’ Kyle Chan Welcome, comrades, to the Feature Interview section of the 2011 school magazine. The intention of this section is to expose to my fellow Frees the exploits and successes of the Old Frees. Once upon a time, they too were like us – ambitious, full of conviction and content with living their lives to the fullest. They too braved the fires of life, hurtling every obstacle and overcoming every challenge in ways they thought best, and from all of that, they gained one of the essential commodities of life: experience. Today, they are successful people, teeming with brilliance and overflowing with wondrous knowledge. It is of my sincerest hope, and that of my fellow Editorial Board members, that this section is able to inspire and motivate our fellow Frees to emulate the efforts of these veterans of life, regardless of what your dreams and aspirations are. Their experience is vast, and it’s not every day that all of us get a first-hand account of important life values, is it? Intelligence is simply not the ability to harvest knowledge from books or remember experiences or exploits of others by rotes, but it is the ability of a person to put such resources to good use in order to create situations which are advantageous to them. Simply put, experience, no matter from who, can be put to good use if a person learns how, and with this exposure, we hope to establish this amongst Frees. God-willing, all of you are able to or willing to fully appreciate these exploits, and in turn make use of them to achieve your dreams and aspirations to the fullest!
40 Feature Interview Biodata Dato’ Syed Mohamad Aidid b. Syed Murtaza, also known by his initials DSA (standing for Dato’ Syed Aidid), is a quick-witted and successful entrepreneur. Having completed his high school certificate in Penang Free School, Dato’ Syed Aidid joined Kah Motors during the early sixties. He is very well known in the business world for working with Yayasan Bumiputra Pulau Pinang Sdn. Bhd as well as being appointed as an Executive Chairman for Hunza Consolidation Berhad. Amongst fellow Frees, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Aidid is famous for his keen interest in keeping himself physically fit. One of his more unorthodox methods in maintaining physical fitness is by fasting. Adhering to the principles of balance and moderation, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Aidid also invests some of his time to keep his mental fitness in check by reading two to five books a week. Above all, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Aidid is by far and large a generous man. His contributions to the school’s activities go way back into the early 1990’s. Such contributions can be reflected with the success of which several annual school activities were carried out with, such as our annual Sports Day. Indeed, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Aidid is a stalwart example of a Free – upholding critical moral values and practising them in life. During your time as a Free, which subjects did Dato’ really enjoy and which subjects did you dislike? I was in the school from Form 1 to Form 5. Usually people leave after Form 5, but I stayed on for my Form 6. So, I spent eight years in the school. I enjoyed most of the subjects. My favourite subjects at that time would have to be History and Geography. The subject that I was least interested in was Mathematics. What co-curricular-co-academic activities did Dato’ partake in? I participated in many games and sports, as well as other society activities. I represented the school in soccer, rugby, and athletics. I was also involved in most of the clubs and societies. Sports, to me had been the most enjoyable. I played almost every sport out there, with the exception of basketball. Did Dato’ enjoy studying more or being outdoors at that time? I am more of the outdoor type but I managed to balance my time. I spent most of my time on school activities. I am not a bookworm. I am much more active outdoors after school hours, compared to classes during school hours. There is certainly a big difference between the school (PFS) then and now. During those days, what was different for Dato’? Students of those days were definitely more focused on education. They, however, did manage to maintain some versatility when it came to co-curricular activities. They balanced their time well between academics and sports. Based on my current observations many parents are pressuring their children to excel in their academics due to their lack of focus I would say, and discouraging their participation in co-curricular activities. This should not be happening.
41 Feature Interview How did Dato’ stand out from the rest of the students at that time? I stood out for being active in sports, representing the school in athletics, soccer, as well as in rugby. I must say that I found most games enjoyable be it cricket, volleyball, hockey, or badminton but for some reason, I seemed to have detested basketball. I guess I never played much of basketball during my time as a free. What was the most memorable event for Dato’ during student days in PFS? When I was in Form 5, my teacher told me, before a major exam, that I would definitely fail because of my weak command of the English language. However, luck seemed to be on my side that year as I received a pass for my English. This was a real boost to my confidence and self esteem. PFS has produced a plethora of successful people. Do you think it’s still true up until today? Well, if you were to mention that you were from Penang Free School during a job interview, half the battle is to your advantage as it would be clearly understood that you posses a good command of the English language. That’s the beauty or should I say the uniqueness of Penang Free School. Candidates from many other schools today would have limitations one way or another in terms of self-presentation during an interview due to their language capabilities. You see, the English language has developed into a very important language throughout the globalization era, and that would be the main reason why our interview is carried out in English and not in Malay. Other schools would probably do it in Malay, but in an effort towards maintaining Penang Free School’s uniqueness, we should always strive towards maintaining it in English. It is and always will be a tradition that has been around for decades. Look at your school tie. Is it not the same as it was many years ago? What doctrines / principles did Dato’ adhere to? Does Dato’ still practice them now in business and entrepreneurship? Discipline. One should always have discipline. Other principles would be trustworthiness and integrity. When you commit to something, you shouldn’t fail to deliver. Honesty is also a must, as it carries you through your life. Keep to your word. Even today, at the age of 63, I still make it a point to adhere to these principles. Did Dato’ always want to be an entrepreneur? Well, business is something that runs in my blood so to say. It has been in my family, from my grandfather, to my father, and to me. I come from a family of gold and diamond merchants, so subsequently I went into investments and expanded the business. Where exactly would Dato’ draw the line when it comes to sacrificing for something? I would never compromise on many issues. As you earn, you should not forget to serve the community and the society as there are many needy people out there. So we must practise humility, never try to impress or to gain publicity. Furthermore, my company consists of a large number of
42 Feature Interview employees, so I am obliged to take their interests and welfare into account when having to make a decision. Being an entrepreneur, does competition become part of your life? Does it bring more good or bad? Competition is the best thing in life. More competitions would bring about more challenges in life. However we should never fear competition for it is what we live for. Time, as they say, is a commodity that is often wasted. How do you manage your time? We have 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week. Most people out there would spend 8 hours working, relaxing, and sleeping respectively. Out of 168 hours in a week, I spend only 28 hours sleeping. I spend the rest of my time working. With the exception of weekends, I don’t make it a point to eat my breakfast and lunch. This gives me more time to focus on my work. You see, I make my work as enjoyable as possible. There are two words that do not exist in my vocabulary, and that would be retirement and rest. When people urge me to make a rest day, I tell them that that we will only rest when we are dead and buried six feet underground. Only then will we be able to rest, in peace! What would you consider as your greatest achievement in life? My greatest achievement so far would have to be my family. It has been a pleasure to educate my two children and to see them grow to become good citizens of the country. They are now able to come forward and serve the country to the extent of their capabilities. Other achievements of mine would have to include the ability to possess thousands of employees under my companies. Life does not revolve around materialistic possessions, but the ability to serve and to lead the community. What do you have to say to the next generation of CEOs and leaders? To the next generation of CEO’s and leaders, being hardworking and diligent is of the utmost importance. One should always strive for the best. However, to be successful is to be so good that the people just can’t ignore you. If you are good at what you do, the world just wouldn’t be able to get enough of you. If you pay for my head, I would gladly throw my heart in for free! This slogan has been my little secret to success. Lastly, what words of advice do you wish to offer to all Frees in general? My advice to the current students of Penang Free School is to acquire as much knowledge as possible while still a student. Whatever learnt should be applied in the near future. Finally, never forget to appreciate your mother and father for you wouldn’t have gotten this far without them.
43 Feature Interview Lastly, how long do you plan to continue working and serving the country and why? I plan to continue working for another 40 years which would mean that I am only going to retire at the age of 103. My father passed away at the age of 105. My grandfather at the age of 96, and my great grandmother at 124, so I guess an additional 40 years wouldn’t be too much to ask for. My father retired at the age of 99 and finally died of old age. What I’m trying to say here is that as we work, we live longer. God will not reclaim our lives if we continue to remain active. After all, we were sent down to earth with a purpose, and that is to serve. “To be successful is to be so good that people just can’t ignore you”
