FEATURES of other gifts. In return, I was given some Japanese gifts to bring back and share with my family members as mementos. I would say that there had been a mutual impact on both my foster mother and me. I had the golden opportunity to visit the spacious Nara Park which had wild deer roaming freely. Japanese food is like no other! I got to savour mouth-watering sushi at Kuromon Ichiban, a wellknown market in Osaka. Along with our appetites being satisfied with every bite of delectable Japanese food, I also got to visit the tea ceremony museum which was where I learnt how the tea ceremony was performed. In conclusion, in a country such as Japan, I’ve definitely picked up some moral values during my stay there. The most significant moral value and one which the Japanese are known for, is respect. I personally admire the respect that Japanese citizens show to one another wherever they may be. Regardless of personal space, privacy, trust, hierarchy, relationships or anything else, respect is of utmost importance in every occasion. Our host, the Hiroshima Club had the usual Standard Operating Procedure to make sure that everybody was on the same page and understood what we could and could not do during our stay in the beautiful land of Japan. During the S.O.P, we had several group discussions and were constantly reminded to have each other’s backs at all times. After months and months of anxiously waiting to visit Japan, I was introduced to my foster An Odyssey of a Lifetime family. We resided in a comfortable home in Nara. Upon arriving at Kansai Airport, my friends and I, along with our respective foster parents visited the grand, magnificent Osaka Castle. There, I learnt briefly about the history of Osaka. I surely had a memorable time for the rest of my stay in Japan, but the whole point of this trip was to engage in a cultural exchange with my host family and the students there. During my stay, I shared some of Malaysia’s multiracial culture and customs with my foster family and gave them some souvenirs from Malaysia such as the graceful Kaftan, a collection of postcards which featured iconic Malaysian landmarks, and a myriad 49

HAPPENINGS performances very much as they were seen clappingalong to the songs and cheering for their friends. Besides the performances, the Sixth Form Society Committee also prepared a video montage comprising short videos containing messages from several committee members and Form 6 teachers. The aim of putting together this video was to share some advice with the Lower 6 students on life as a Form 6 student as well as to prepare them for the coming year in Penang Free School. Furthermore, there were also nominations carried out for selected awards such as Prom King, Prom Queen, Prom Prince, Prom Princess and Best Dressed for both genders. The voting was carried out via an online voting system and was tallied at the end of the night. The long awaited moment of the night arrived as the award winners were announced. Pershanth from 6A2 won the Prom King title while Gillian Goh from 6A4 was crowned as the Prom Queen. Joshua Vega and Soo Zen from 6R4 were announced as the Prom Prince and Prom Princess respectively. The Best Dressed Females for the night were Raneetha from 6AB and Elena Lim from 6R4 whereas Best Dressed Males were Joshua Vega of 6R4 and Pevindera of 6A4.The evening ended with a group photo session to capture the memories that were created for that enchanted night. All in all, the Orientation Ball 2019 was a huge success and definitely a night to be remembered by all! Written by: Melanie Catrina Gomez & Chong Wen Qing On the 7th of July 2019, the Sixth Form Society of Penang Free School planned and organized an event known as the Orientation Ball for all the Lower and Upper 6 students. This event is held annually and has remained a proud tradition of the school. The theme of this year’s Orientation Ball, “The Fortis Awards” was inspired by prestigious world-renowned events such as the Golden Globe Awards, The Oscars and the Emmy Awards. The dinner was held in Evergreen Laurel Hotel and a total of 90 students and teachers attended the event. The main aim of the Orientation Ball is to welcome the Lower 6 students to Form 6 as well as to strengthen the bonds of friendship between all students and teachers. The evening kickstarted with speeches by Encik Rahamatullah, the Senior Assistant for Form 6, who represented the Form 6 teachers as well as Gillian Goh Jingmi, the President of the Sixth Form Society. Beautiful corsages were provided earlier as door gifts for the first 20 students who arrived early for the event. Next, no Orientation Ball would be complete without thrilling performances and entertainment by our very own students. There were a total of three performances this year that comprised a band performance, a duet and a solo performance. The performing band, On Curfew, consisted of Lower 6 students. Apart from performing for the Orientation Ball, they also performed small gigs in cafes around town! The duet who performed consisted of ex-students from Penang Free School while an Upper 6 student, Nicholas Chin performed solo. All the students and teachers enjoyed the Orientation Ball 77

HAPPENINGS Once again, Penang Free School (PFS) bids adieu to one of its dedicated and experienced teachers, Mr. Ong Beng Soon upon his retirement as a Form 6 MUET teacher. Mr. Ong began teaching in PFS, his Alma Mater, in March, 1995. He had served the school for 24 years. As a teacher in PFS, Mr. Ong was heavily involved as the Uniform unit Co-ordinator in the Annual Co-Curriculum Day parades. His outstanding service comprised his duties as the Scout Master of the 1st Georgetown South Scout Troop and the Teacher Advisor cum Coach for the PFS Wushu Club. Indeed Mr. Ong had served his Alma Mater well. We would like to take this opportunity to wish Mr. Ong Beng Soon all the best and a happy and pleasant retirement. EXPRESSIONS The Joy Luck Club – Unfolding the Hidden Lives of People on the Margins Dr. Lee Tiang Keng Literature Prize (senior) The Joy Luck Club was, at the time of its release, a fresh and revolutionary depiction of Asians and Asian-Americans in American literature. Although it has wavered in popularity over the decades as newer entries in Asian-American fiction – such as Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians – started to receive more prominence, The Joy Luck Club will always be remembered as one of the pioneers of this cultural niche. To the modern reader, Amy Tan’s debut novel may seem dated, with her contemporary scenes clearly indicating the setting and culture of the American west coast of the 1980s, but this lack of timelessness has perhaps given the story (and the stories contained therein) an air of authenticity that adds to its greater historical value. The Joy Luck Club is notable for being one of the first American literary works to depict Asian characters as complex and realistic people, rather than such caricatures as Charlie Chan, the mild-mannered cop, and Fu Manchu, the archetypal criminal mastermind. For the first time, the legitimate struggles and experiences of Asian immigrants and their families were being represented in the literary sphere. Amy Tan gave a voice to those who were uprooted from their old lives for one reason or another and who had come to the USA to seek better lives, and to their children who found themselves navigating their unique cultural identities – with one foot in the East and the other in the West, as it were. Those whose identities remained unseen, whose legacies remained unheard, found themselves entering the collective consciousness of American society as more works like The Joy Luck Club came into being. Unlike Charlie Chan, whose stories involved him constantly having to prove himself to his Caucasian colleagues in the police force, Amy Tan’s characters experience struggles that feel real and relevant to their cultural identities. Amy Tan describes the mother-daughter relationships in the novel as “refractions” of her own relationship with her mother. By drawing on her personal experience as inspiration, Tan has managed give her readers an authentic insight into the unique experience of being a firstgeneration Asian-American child, unveiling the conflicts that arise from the clash of cultures, from parental expectations, and from the difficulty of communication between generations. By depicting each of the daughters’ journey towards gaining an understanding of her mother and vice versa, Amy Tan allows the reader to share in the catharsis of her evolving connection with her mother. Such a sentimental experience which had been unique to Tan’s experience of being the child of Asian immigrants has been made known to the world through her masterful portrait of the fictional-yet-real familial relationships spanning across multiple generations. The Joy Luck Club is a sprawling tapestry of culture and history, containing a comprehensive depiction of bygone eras and the associated cultures and traditions, which the novel explores extensively. Not only are various aspects of Chinese culture as well as prominent historical events – such as the Second Sino-Japanese War – seamlessly integrated into the mothers’ intricately woven backgrounds; the changing attitudes of American society from the '50s to the '80s can also be seen throughout the daughters’ life stories. The novel is also a powerfully raw exploration of the human psyche. Having been diagnosed with depression, Amy Tan’s intimate familiarity with emotional pain shines through in her work. Her characters are depicted experiencing complex and realistic emotional struggles, including depression, insecurities, grief and loss. The chaotic reality of these experiences which are difficult to embody in words are masterfully allegorized through parables and metaphors rooted in Chinese culture. The sophisticated realism with which Tan describes her characters’ emotional suffering has resonated with many readers. In spite of its acclaim, The Joy Luck Club has been criticized in recent years for its unfavourable and somewhat caricaturized depiction of the mainland Chinese. Some have accused Amy Tan of misrepresenting Chinese culture and perpetuating 80

EXPRESSIONS racial stereotypes. However, from another point of view, the one-dimensional depiction of the antagonists of the mothers’ stories lends an air of genuineness to those stories-within-stories, with the most pronounced negative characteristics of particular people being that which survive the decay of time and memory in the minds of these women who have been through so much. Amy Tan herself has said that she considers herself a “specifist” rather than a “generalist”, and that her depictions of Chinese families are expressions of her own experience growing up, which are not meant to be taken as a “template” for all Chinese families. All in all, The Joy Luck Club’s literary value comes not from its timeless quality, but from its concrete roots in history and the emotional weight given to its characters’ journeys. This culturally rich novel serves as a time capsule to preserve the stories of the marginalized, the misfits, and the lost. It will also continue to hold its special place in the history of American literature as the precursor to the Crazy Rich Asians of today and tomorrow. by Nicholas Chin Yi Shuen (6A4) (supervised by: Pn. Suriya Kumari) The [Killing] Game of Life I’ve seen some unpretty, faces calling each of them unafraid, A dignified persona that refines their heart (hard) in their eyes, But underneath what lies within becomes so terrifying, And I can’t unhear some of the things they said, Adopt a new personality, Suicidal tendencies, Depressive attitudes and no real intention, Dormant sincerity, Brutal honesty, Sociopathic nature of degeneration (the generation), Battered front and back for years, Ignorant till the fall, Fought so hard to hold back fears, Everflowing bitter tears, Ripped from heaven’s solitude, Cynical mystery, Battle five whole hundred years, Resolve just disappears, Forced to eat the cruel face of reality, Swallow poison pills with no feelings, Six fingers now dirty with intention, A strand of hope may still appear When the Sun has set for good, Rising from the west from a pure miracle, For when we meet again in some odd dream I hope we’ve all achieved something A life of happy satisfaction, We don’t believe in gods or destiny but time will change, And forge our fates with nothing but our hands, When we travel to the ends of the earth, Let’s pray all hate will disperse, And loose ends tie up imperfectly, When we never see the light, the truth is always blinding That we’ll take the last train home; to each our own. To reach our goal. by Danish Imran 81

EXPRESSIONS A NOTE OF THANKS Yes, the day has come around once again And PFS is one year older. It is again I think of you, my teachers of old From the dear old Masters of the school to the lady teachers like Miss J. E. Lim and Mrs C.E. OH Who had been inspirations to us, the students of old. As the rain on my roof fall Thoughts of PFS memories came in to realise how much I miss you all. Yes, time moves on, too quickly; Yes, We were in PFS in the 19 sixties but now we are in the twenties; Indeed time passes by quickly but with memories, PFS still stands high and tall for us all. It never crossed my mind that I’d feel so blue When thinking back of PFS and everything due; That on that very day I’d lose a piece of you inside of me when leaving the school; PFS has been a place where I found and made new school friends who are wonderful friends till today, Who would have thought we as friends are able to meet up again in another place like Sydney, Australia? It is due to our teachers that many of us ended up successfully in our chosen careers. Though we did leave behind the ones we know and remember to this day, Not a day that goes by that I don’t think of you good teachers. How I wished you teachers would be here to enjoy All the fun and times like when we were in your class even your sternness at times shown, Your laughter and your smile you always gave us students; These are moments I cherish and hold so dear of PFS, Moments spent but with everlasting good memories. Even though it’s hard to accept the fact that we are far, far apart daily; But the distance between you and us/me are only... Only temporarily! Thank you to all teachers and friends from PFS, most sincerely! From, Dr. Lim Phaik Ee , Willoughby, Australia. 1st July 2019. 82
