50 The 53rd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Mary Rampellini Gunite put together a championship-caliber campaign in 2023, capturing the Grade 1 Forego over eventual Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Elite Power and compiling earnings of $1.4 million. For his record, Gunite is a finalist for the Eclipse Award as outstanding male sprinter. Gunite’s season, which featured three stakes wins, hit a high point in August. He was seeking to turn the tables on nemesis Elite Power in the Forego at Saratoga, a month after the reigning champion sprinter had edged him by a head in the track’s Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap. Gunite was powerful on the front end in the Forego, setting the pace and going on to win the seven-furlong race in a brisk 1:21.53. He was a 1 3/4-length winner, handing Elite Power his lone loss in 2023. Gunite’s performance thrilled his connections, breeder and owner Winchell Thoroughbreds, trainer Steve Asmussen, and regular rider Tyler Gaffalione. “It was a very tough defeat for him in the Vanderbilt and for him not to blink an eye and lay it down again, it proves what a special horse he is,” Asmussen told Daily Racing Form after the Forego. “All he wanted was another chance [against Elite Power] and today he proved how good he is.” The Forego was the second Grade 1 victory for Gunite, who as a 2-year-old in 2021 had captured the Hopeful at Saratoga. Overall, he is an eight-time stakes winner. “Gunite is just a very special horse, to race at the level he has for as long as he has and so consistently,” Asmussen told Daily Racing Form. The Forego win came after Gunite paired Beyer Speed Figures of 108 for his effort in the Vanderbilt and his win in the Aristides in June at Churchill Downs. He also put up triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in his 4-year-old debut, when he won the King Cotton in January at Oaklawn with a 104 and later in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in November, when second to Elite Power with a 107. Gunite’s eight-race campaign last season also included two starts overseas. He was second to Elite Power in the Group 3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint in February and third by a half-length in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in March. Gunite “gives us such a great effort all the time,” Asmussen told Daily Racing Form after the Breeders’ Cup. “He’s traveled the world and always runs his race.” A few days later, it was announced that Gunite would launch a stallion career in Kentucky in 2024, at the Ashford Stud operation of Coolmore. The son of Gun Runner, who is now 5, won 9 of 21 starts in his career for earnings of $2.4 million. “He was unusual in that he was top class at 2, 3, and 4,” Charlie O’Connor, Ashford’s director of sales, said in a press release announcing the retirement of Gunite. “He was one of the best sprinters in the country and had top Beyer Figures of 108 at both Saratoga and Churchill. He’s a very good-looking horse, and we can’t wait for breeders to see him.” Gunite is from the stakes-winning Cowboy Cal mare Simple Surprise. He was bred in Kentucky. 52 The 53rd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Nicole Russo After another season of sustained excellence, Echo Zulu finds herself an Eclipse Award finalist for the third consecutive year. A perfect 3-for-3 record in 2023 makes her a contender for champion female sprinter. Echo Zulu was bred in Kentucky by Betz, J. Betz, Burns, CHNNHK, Magers, CoCo Equine, and Ramsby. She was a $300,000 yearling purchase at the 2020 Keeneland September sale by Winchell Thoroughbreds, which went on to campaign her in partnership with L and N Racing. Echo Zulu is from the first crop of 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner, co-campaigned by Winchell and Three Chimneys Farm. She was trained by Steve Asmussen, who also conditioned her sire and was thus in a unique position to evaluate her. “The development that she has shown is so much like her father,” Asmussen said in summer 2023. “The longer you had him, the faster he was, and that’s how she’s been.” It was hard to imagine there was more development to come when Echo Zulu was the 2021 Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old filly, winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies as well as two other Grade 1 events in the Spinaway and Frizette. In 2022, she won the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks and was a creditable fourth in the Kentucky Oaks. She cut back to one turn to win the Grade 3 Dogwood, then finished second to champion Goodnight Olive in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, with another champion, Ce Ce, finishing fourth. Echo Zulu was named an Eclipse Award finalist in the female sprint category for 2022. In 2023, Echo Zulu showed her best, winning all three of her starts by a combined 15 1/2 lengths and earning career-best Beyer Speed Figures along the way. She re-emerged in May to lead throughout in the Grade 3 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs, scoring by 5 3/4 lengths. She went on to dominate the Grade 2 Honorable Miss in July at Saratoga, rolling by 7 1/4 lengths while geared down. Echo Zulu caught a sloppy track for her rematch with Goodnight Olive in the Grade 1 Ballerina Handicap on Aug. 26 at Saratoga. She set a pressured pace of 22.45 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.23 for the half, at which point she was a head in front of the reigning filly-sprint champion. Echo Zulu edged clear, then powered away in the final yards to win by 2 1/2 lengths. “Felt like I was in control pretty much all the way through the race,” regular rider Florent Geroux said despite the pressure throughout. “She’s amazing. I’m just very grateful for the opportunity the owners and Steve Asmussen have given me to ride her. She’s a champion, and I’m just the lucky pilot.” Echo Zulu earned a career-high Beyer of 112 in both the Honorable Miss and Ballerina. Those figures tied for the highest Beyers of the season with the 112 that Cody’s Wish ran in the Grade 1 Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap. Echo Zulu was preparing for the Breeders’ Cup when she sustained fractured sesamoids in a workout Oct. 13 at Santa Anita. She underwent a successful repair surgery, and as of December was continuing a steady recovery at the Chino Valley Equine Clinic. Echo Zulu concluded her career with a record of nine wins and one second from 11 starts, and earnings of $2,640,375. Barbara D. 54 The 53rd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Brad Free Goodnight Olive had a tough act to follow in 2023 while trying to match her 2022 championship campaign. Following an outstanding 2022 that earned her the Eclipse Award as outstanding female sprinter and distinction as an Eclipse finalist for older dirt female, the consistent 5-year-old mare came back for more. By the end of 2023, Goodnight Olive once again found herself a finalist in both categories. Her five-start campaign included three graded victories and a repeat win in the Grade 1 PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, enough for Goodnight Olive to emerge as an Eclipse finalist in the same categories – female sprinter and older dirt female. Who knew she was this good? Trainer Chad Brown knew. So did her jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. And the mare, sired by Ghostzapper, took owners First Row Partners and Team Hanley on a championship ride that ended the same way it began, with a Grade 1 victory at seven furlongs. Goodnight Olive returned from a five-month break for her 2023 debut in the Grade 1 Madison on April 8 at Keeneland. The odds-on favorite, Goodnight Olive raced forwardly in midpack, swung wide, opened up, and won by a length. Nice start to the season. The breaks did not go her way a month later in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff on May 6 at Churchill Downs. Goodnight Olive started at odds-on, with a bull’s-eye on her back. Goodnight Olive and Ortiz were trapped inside in third or fourth, with nowhere to go. Blocked and buried through the stretch, Goodnight Olive never had a chance. She finished third by two lengths behind winner Matareya and runner-up Wicked Halo. It is still the only race in which Goodnight Olive finished out of the exacta. She would try to make amends in the Grade 2 Bed o’ Roses on June 17 at Belmont. Goodnight Olive had a fight on her hands in the form of Wicked Halo. Goodnight Olive wore her down to win by a neck and reemerge as a premier female sprinter. However, there was another top sprint filly waiting. Goodnight Olive would meet Echo Zulu in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes on Aug. 26 at Saratoga. Although Goodnight Olive earned a career-high 108 Beyer, she finished 2 1/2 lengths behind Echo Zulu. Goodnight Olive still had the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint ahead, and Echo Zulu, having suffered a career-ending injury, was not in the field. Despite having the rail post, Goodnight Olive moved outside for a clear trip and dominated by 2 3/4 lengths. Nice way to end the season. Goodnight Olive was bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and sold to First Row Partners for $170,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale. She won 3 of 5 starts in 2023, and earned $1,176,250. Days after the Breeders’ Cup, she was sold for $6 million to John Stewart. Plans call for Goodnight Olive to campaign in 2024 at age 6. She will have a tough act to follow. Barbara D. 56 The 53rd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Nicole Russo Maple Leaf Mel was a star who flashed too briefly, but who dazzled. The New York-bred filly was in front at every chart point of call in every race she finished, officially winning five races, including a pair of graded stakes in 2023, by a combined 20 1/4 lengths. Voters ensured she will retain a spot in Thoroughbred history by making her one of the finalists for the Eclipse Award as outstanding female sprinter of 2023. Maple Leaf Mel, a Cross Traffic filly bred in the Empire State by Joe Fafone, was purchased by the August Dawn Farm of retired NFL Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells as a juvenile, and placed in the barn of Jeremiah Englehart. There, she developed a close bond with Canadian-born assistant trainer Melanie Giddings. The gray filly was named in honor of Giddings, who would often share photos and videos of the pair interacting or napping in the filly’s stall. Maple Leaf Mel started out against statebreds, winning her August 2022 debut at Saratoga by five lengths, and a little more than two weeks later, won the Seeking the Ante Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths. After a winter break, the filly picked up right where she left off with 7 3/4-length victory in the East View Stakes in March at Aqueduct. The filly then stepped up to graded stakes company for the first time. Confidently handled by regular rider Joel Rosario, she posted a 1 1/2-length score in the Grade 3 Miss Preakness in May at Pimlico. “This is special not just for me but there are a lot of other people as well,” Giddings said after that race. “They have a horse to look up to, in a sense, when she is winning.” In the meantime, Giddings had opened her own stable and Parcells transferred the filly to her. Maple Leaf Mel gave Giddings her first graded win in the Grade 3 Victory Ride on July 8 at Belmont Park. Off that win, she targeted the Grade 1 Test Stakes on Aug. 5 at Saratoga. In an August interview with Daily Racing Form’s David Grening, Giddings recalled the moments before bringing the filly to the paddock. “I went to put the bridle on her before we went over and she was nickering, she was so excited,” Giddings said. “This is what she loved to do.” Maple Leaf Mel showed the way in the Test and led by 2 1/2 lengths in deep stretch over a field that included Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous and three other stakes winners. Tragedy struck just strides from the wire, as she sustained a catastrophic injury to her right front leg and had to be euthanized on the track. The following morning, trainer Brendan Walsh, whose Pretty Mischievous was declared the official winner, delivered the winner’s floral blanket to Maple Leaf Mel’s stall. “She was never going to lose,” Giddings said. “It’s hard to say how talented she could have been the rest of her life. She was so fast.” Barbara D. The 53rd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA 58 TRAINER FINALISTS By Marcus Hersh Gone are the days when Chad Brown battled against the label of turf trainer. Brown has plenty of high-end horses for the main track now. Nonetheless, his bread and butter remains green. Brown ranked sixth among American trainers in 2023 wins with 206. Narrow the standings to turf races, and Brown was the runaway leader, his 113 wins 21 more than Phil D’Amato’s second-leading total. You already know that Brown had more graded stakes winners on turf than any other trainer, but those standings still are arresting: Brown had 29 such winners (about 14 percent of his overall win total), D’Amato 18, with Todd Pletcher sending out the third-highest total, 11. The distance between first and third is a vast chasm, not a gap. Brown, a four-time Eclipse winner and a 2023 finalist for the award, trained nine individual Grade 1 winners in 2023 and won two Breeders’ Cup races; the Juvenile Fillies Turf with Hard to Justify and the PNC Bank Filly & Mare Sprint with Goodnight Olive, who repeated in the race. Brown had seven different Grade 1 turf winners, led, as often, by a powerhouse group of older fillies and mares: In Italian started her season with Grade 1 wins in the Jenny Wiley and Just a Game, then was narrowly beaten by Whitebeam in the Grade 1 Diana and by Gina Romantica in the Grade 1 First Lady. Brown trained both those horses, too. Brown also sent out Marketsegmentation to victory in the Grade 1 New York, and in December won California Grade 1 turf contests on consecutive days when Program Trading captured the Hollywood Derby and Surge Capacity the Matriarch. This was not Chad Brown’s best year as a trainer, but he remained one of the best trainers in America. By Marcus Hersh If Brad Cox is not named champion trainer of 2023, it will be largely because Cox has become a victim of his own success. Cox has trained more than 200 winners the last seven years. His runners earned a staggering $30.9 million during 2023, more than Cox’s stable earnings of $23.8 million in 2022, less than the $31.7 million he reached in 2021. Cox won 30 graded stakes during 2023, the fourth straight year he has won 30 or more graded races. In 2023, Cox ranked first in purse earnings, third in total wins with 266, and third in graded stakes wins. He tied with Chad Brown for the most Grade 1 wins, at 12, and Cox had, amazingly, 10 different Grade 1 winners in eight different racing categories: 2-year-old male, 3-year-old male, 3-year-old filly, older male dirt, older female dirt, male turf, female dirt sprint, and female turf sprint. Cox’s 28 percent win rate is far higher than any trainer playing at such a high level and on vast volume. It is not like this string of Eclipse-worthy accomplishments has gone unnoticed. Cox, after all, is a finalist to be named champion trainer for the third time. Thing is, Cox has reeled off similar stats on a yearly basis. In 2021, when he won his first Eclipse, Cox was fourth in wins, fourth in graded stakes wins, and first in earnings by just a couple hundred thousand bucks. No one had a better 2023, top to bottom and on straight statistics, than Cox. But at this point, that is merely achieving the expected. BRAD COX By Marcus Hersh Bill Mott, a Hall of Famer now for decades, turned 70 last July. It is never too late to explore new places, and during 2023, Mott went somewhere he’d never been, his $17.43 million in stable earnings the highest mark of a long career. Mott’s stable during 2022 racked up 26 graded stakes wins, the highest yearly figure of his career and a far cry from 2017 and 2018 when he won, respectively, nine and eight graded stakes. Things did not slow down in 2023, with 24 graded stakes wins, including 10 individual Grade 1 winners. Three of those horses – Cody’s Wish, Elite Power, and Just F Y I – are Eclipse Award finalists, and Cody’s Wish, Elite Power, and Just F Y I are all but certain to be champions. Cody’s Wish is a leading contender for Horse of the Year, and Mott also guided Casa Creed to another incredible season and won a Grade 1 with the late Art Collector. Mott, do not forget, is hitting these marks with a smaller stable than the other four trainers who ranked among the top five in 2023 stable earnings. Brad Cox had 962 starters, Steve Asmussen 2,152, Todd Pletcher 979, and Chad Brown 909, while Mott sent out only 649 starters. Success with a range of runners? Check. Just F Y I is a 2-year-old filly, Casa Creed a 7-year-old horse. Elite Power is the best dirt sprinter in the world, War Like Goddess a 1 1/2-mile turf horse. Mott started 2024 with a winner. His son Riley is competing against him in Florida. Bill Mott, a septuagenarian and three-time Eclipse winner – 1995, 1996, and 2011 – remains at the top of the sport and is again a finalist for outstanding trainer. CHAD BROWN WILLIAM MOTT

62 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Marcus Hersh A finalist for a Cartier Award as Europe’s leading 2-year-old of 2022, Auguste Rodin has pulled off a most unusual double as a finalist for an Eclipse Award in 2023 as North America’s leading 3-yearold male as well as male turf horse. Auguste Rodin’s candidacy arises from his half-length victory over America’s leading older turf horse, Up to the Mark, in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. Scoring by a half-length thanks in part to a perfect trip engineered by jockey Ryan Moore, Auguste Rodin is one of only two horses to win both the Epsom Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Turf. The other was High Chaparral, who, like Auguste Rodin, won both races in the same year, 2002. High Chaparral came back the following year to dead heat for another Breeders’ Cup Turf win, and since Auguste Rodin stays in training as a 4-year-old, he, too, could make a return trip to the Breeders’ Cup. The Breeders’ Cup Turf capped a season that began distressingly, Auguste Rodin finishing 12th among 14 runners, beaten more than 20 lengths, in the Group 1 2000 Guineas on May 6. With the aid of hindsight, one can surmise that the colt entirely failed to cope with a rain-sodden, leaden course at Newmarket, because one month later, running over firm going at Epsom, Auguste Rodin won the Group 1 Epsom Derby by a half-length over the estimable King of Steel. Auguste Rodin may, in fact, loathe any real moisture in the ground. After a modest win in the Group 1 Irish Derby, he went to Ascot as the favorite for the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes on July 29 and beat none of his nine rivals on a course rated good-to-soft. That was not the real Auguste Rodin, not the colt who showed his versatility in early September cutting back from three 1 1/2- mile contests to land the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes going 1 1/4 miles at Leopardstown. With his decided preference for firmer footing, the Breeders’ Cup Turf at fast-ground Santa Anita became the preferred choice over the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, often contested on soft going. Trainer Aidan O’Brien knew the ground would suit Auguste Rodin, and the Irish Champion had demonstrated a degree of handiness, speed, and athleticism that would be required to navigate the relatively small oval and extremely short homestretch at Santa Anita. Auguste Rodin might have been able to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf had his journey merely been adequate, but Moore found ample room for passage alongside the inner rail, his mount making an electric move off the far turn and into the homestretch to sail one length clear at the furlong grounds. Up to the Mark made modest inroads in the late stages, but Auguste Rodin simply had too much quality to be caught. The quality was inherited. A Coolmore homebred, Auguste Rodin is by the late, great Japanese stallion Deep Impact. He’s the first foal to race out of Group 1 winner Rhododendron, who finished second in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Her son went one place better. 64 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Marcus Hersh As far back as his 2-year-old campaign of 2020, Master of The Seas had suggested he was a top-level horse. It was not until the second half of his 5-year-old season of 2023 that the gelding truly lived up to his potential. He did so not once, not twice, but three times, all while racing far from trainer Charlie Appleby’s base in England. A Godolphin homebred by Dubawi out of Firth of Lorne, by Danehill, Master of The Seas was a Group 2 winner at 2 and 3 and nearly toook down the English 2000 Guineas, losing by a short head to the talented Poetic Flare. He began his 5-year-old campaign racing three times in Dubai, the last of those starts a poor showing in the Group 1 Dubai Turf. Back in England, the gelding had a limited summer campaign, but his lone start, in July at Ascot in the Group 2 Summer Mile, produced a blowout win. Master of The Seas then hit the road, or, more accurately, the skies, making his last three starts of the year in North America. He coasted to an easy victory, his first Grade 1, in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile, then was pipped on the line by America’s leading turf light, Up to the Mark, in the Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland. That was a tough beat – about as tough as the post position Master of The Seas drew, 13, for the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile. The Santa Anita grass course is compact, with a homestretch of barely 1 1/2 furlongs and a relatively short run into the first turn. For jockey William Buick there was but one Mile strategy – take back to save some ground and hope for the best. Twelfth down the backstretch and 12th while wide around the second turn, Master of The Seas was still in a seemingly impossible spot with just a furlong to run, 11th with nearly six lengths to make up on the leader, the Godolphin filly Mawj. A spectacular finish would be required, and that is what Master of The Seas delivered, whistling his final quarter-mile in 22.12 seconds to win a photo finish. The English horse could be considered the best turf miler in America during 2023, and a worthy Eclipse Award finalist. As a gelding, Master of The Seas is expected to return to the races in 2024, and it is possible he could give Godolphin a fourth straight win in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. He ended it clearly the best turf horse based in North America after a seven-start season strong enough to make him an Eclipse Awards finalist in the older turf male division and merit Horse of the Year consideration. Up to the Mark at various times was utterly dominant and fantastically versatile, and the richness of his accomplishments during the year came despite the fact physical issues forced a four-month break between starts. Up to the Mark came back from his layoff at least as good as he went into it and in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita fell three-quarters of a length shy of a truly epic campaign. In the Turf, Up to the Mark endured a more difficult trip than the winner, Auguste Rodin, a 3-year-old who was in receipt of four pounds from Up to the Mark and benefited from a rail-skimming journey that might have been the difference between victory and defeat. Auguste Rodin, lest it be forgotten, won the 2023 Derby at Epsom as well as two other overseas Group 1s. Up to the Mark, trained by Todd Pletcher for Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables, as a 3-year-old of 2022 was considered a dirt prospect. Switched to turf on Jan. 28, Up to the Mark found his calling, and in that first-level allowance win it was not who he beat but how he won, with a dazzling turn of foot, that pointed out an exciting grass prospect. Connections did not aim low when the time came to try stakes racing, running Up to the Mark in the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile in April at Keeneland, where his lone 2023 loss before the Breeders’ Cup came under less-than-ideal circumstances. For starters, victorious Chez Pierre ran the race of his life that day, cruising to an open-lengths win while, Petcher has said, Up to the Mark’s jockey remained too focused on what favored Modern Games was doing rather than riding his own race. One mile, in the end, sits at the very short end of Up to the Mark’s ideal distance range. The next month, he left no doubt in the Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic over 1 1/8 miles at Churchill Downs, and Up to the Mark was similarly dominant in the 1 1/4- mile, Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Manhattan on the Belmont Stakes undercard. At the height of his powers, Up to the Mark then sat out the summer, going back to Keeneland in October to make his comeback in the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile. Master of The Seas, a true miler, was coming off a win in the Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile and would go on to capture the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile, and still, Up to the Mark ran him down and won by a nose. With just one race in four months and one race beyond 1 1/8 miles, Up to the Mark looked like a strong candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Instead, connections went for glory, trying Up to the Mark for the first time at 1 1/2 miles and nearly hitting their mark. By Not This Time out of Belle’s Finale, by Ghostzapper, Up to the Mark was bred by Ramspring Farm and sold for $450,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale. And in 2023, he was simply incredible. 68 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Steve Andersen How consistent was the turf mare In Italian in 2023? She was a nose and a head away from winning four consecutive Grade 1 races in many of the toughest races in the nation for fillies and mares on turf. In Italian’s consistently high level of performance in those races in Kentucky and New York has resulted in her position on the list of finalists for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding turf female for the second consecutive year. Trained by Chad Brown for owner Peter Brant, In Italian had a tough act to follow in 2023. In 2022, she won 4 of 7 starts and earned more than $1.27 million in a season in which she won two Grade 1 races and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland. In Italian, by Dubawi and bred in England by Fairway Thoroughbreds, opened her 5-year-old campaign in 2023 with two authoritative wins in Grade 1 races – by three lengths in the Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland in April, and by 3 3/4 lengths in the Just a Game Stakes at Belmont Park in June. In the summer and early fall, In Italian ran two more winning races, but was caught each time at the finish by stablemates. In the Grade 1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga in mid-July, a race she won in 2022, In Italian was the 3-10 favorite. She set the pace, led by a length on the turn, and was beaten a nose at the finish by 7-1 Whitebeam, also trained by Brown. “It was really tight there, and In Italian ran her heart out,” Brown told New York Racing Association publicity. In Italian did not race again for nearly three months, until the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at a mile on turf at Keeneland. In Italian won the 2022 First Lady by leading throughout and nearly succeeded in the same manner in 2023. She led by 1 1/2 lengths with a furlong remaining, but was unable to hold off the Brant-owned Gina Romantica, who won by a head in an 11-1 upset. The 2023 Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf was run at 1 1/4 miles at Santa Anita. While races at that distance on turf at Santa Anita have a downhill run for more than a furlong, the distance was the longest race of In Italian’s 14-start career. Ridden by Joel Rosario, In Italian set a solid pace and led by a half-length entering the stretch. She carried the advantage into the final furlong before she was caught, eventually, finishing fifth by 2 3/4 lengths behind the British shipper Inspiral. While the loss was the first time In Italian had finished worse than third in her career, the setback did not to diminish an otherwise outstanding season that saw her finish the year with more than $2.19 million in career earnings. 70 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Steve Andersen In 2021, Inspiral was the champion 2-year-old filly in Europe. The following year, she gained the 3-year-old filly title on that continent. She may gain a championship on a different hemisphere for her 4-year-old campaign in 2023. Inspiral is a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the leading turf female in the United States following her dazzling win in the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at 1 1/4 miles on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita. The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf result was a championship-caliber performance by any measure, and it was Inspiral’s lone start in the United States. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Inspiral closed from ninth in a field of 12 in the final furlong to catch an unlucky Warm Heart, winning by a neck in a dramatic finish. “They weren’t stopping,” winning trainer John Gosden said in a post-race press conference. “Normally, if they go too quick they come back. She’s a mighty filly to get there.” Inspiral, bred and owned by Cheveley Park Stud of Newmarket, England, won for the ninth time in her 13th start in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. She arrived in California for the Breeders’ Cup with a big reputation – and delivered. A Group 1 stakes winner at 2 and a two-time Group 1 winner at 3, Inspiral began her 2023 season with losses in two of Britain’s toughest one-mile races – a second by a neck in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and a dull fifth in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes over soft ground at Goodwood Racecourse in early August. The loss in the Sussex was only the second time in her career she finished outside of the top two. Inspiral has not lost since. Inspiral was a juicy 7-1 when she won the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville, France, on Aug. 13, run just 11 days after the Sussex. She earned a fees-paid berth to the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile with that win. In her final start of the year in Britain, Inspiral was the easy winner of the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile at Newmarket by 3 3/4 lengths as the 9-10 favorite. In choosing a Breeders’ Cup race to enter, the Filly & Mare Turf was the race selection, even though Inspiral had never raced beyond a mile. “The few times she got beat you can say the ground was too soft or she missed a jump or wasn’t quite ready,” Dettori said after the Breeders’ Cup. “When she’s on song, look, she’s beaten the colts twice. “She won’t win a beauty contest, but she can run.” Inspiral, by Frankel, has won six Group/Grade 1 races in her career, including five at a mile and the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. After the win in the Breeders’ Cup, Richard Thompson of Cheveley Park said Inspiral will stay in training in 2024. 72 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Steve Andersen A wildly successful three-continent campaign in 2023 left the young filly Mawj as a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the outstanding turf female as well as champion 3-year-old filly of 2023. Mawj was only a nose away from a perfect five-race season through the year. In the end, the only runner to beat her was a stablemate also owned and bred by Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing. Mawj’s loss was arguably her finest performance, a nose defeat to Master of The Seas in the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 4. Always within a few lengths of the front, Mawj opened a one-length lead in the stretch. She seemed poised to beat males only for late-running Master of The Seas to grab the win at the wire. “The only filly in the race, she ran fantastically,” Hugh Anderson of Godolphin said after the race. Trained by Saeed bin Suroor, Mawj was raced sparingly from late January to early November at four of the most important racecourses in the world. By the Danehill stallion Exceed and Excel, Mawj began the year with wins in two rich allowance races on turf for 3-year-olds fillies at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai – the Jumeirah Fillies Classic at about seven furlongs in late January and the Jumeirah Fillies Guineas at a mile in late February. Typical of many leading Godolphin/bin Suroor runners, Mawj was sent to Britain in early spring and had her 2023 European debut in the Group 1 English 1000 Guineas on a straightaway mile course at Newmarket. Dismissed at 9-1, Mawj took the lead with a quarter-mile remaining and held off favored Tahiyra to win by a half-length. Mawj gave bin Suroor his first win in a British classic since 2009. Mawj beat a brilliant rival. Tahiyra won Group 1 races in her next three starts through early September. Mawj, meanwhile, stayed in the barn for the rest of the spring and summer, and not by design. She was an intended runner for the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June until she was sidelined by a cough. Mawj did not race again in Europe in 2023. She returned to action for the first time since the 1000 Guineas in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Keeneland in October. Sent off as the 6-5 favorite in a field of nine, Mawj was bin Suroor’s first American runner since 2019. In the $600,000 Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup, Mawj took the lead under jockey Oisin Murphy and won by a half-length, giving the then 56-year-old bin Suroor the 500th group or graded stakes win of his career. In the days after the Breeders’ Cup, Godolphin announced that Mawj will spend this winter in Dubai, delightful news for racing fans who found her an easy filly to admire throughout the world in 2023. 74 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA JOCKEY FINALISTS By Mary Rampellini Irad Ortiz Jr. has won four Eclipse Awards for outstanding jockey throughout his career to establish himself as one of racing’s most successful riders. But he’s not one to rest on his laurels. Ortiz once again is the front-runner for North America’s champion jockey on the heels of a 2023 in which he set a singleseason record for mount earnings with $39,192,585, led his peers in wins with 366 from 1,560 starts, and captured three individual Breeders’ Cup races, topped by the $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic. Ortiz was on White Abarrio in the Breeders’ Cup Classic for trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. “He brought me that confidence,” Ortiz told Daily Racing Form. “He had that positive energy. It transferred to me. Every single day he talked to me about how good the horse is doing. He made me trust the horse no matter what.” Ortiz continues to be entrusted with some of the most talented horses in training. He captured the Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint with 2022 champion Elite Power and the PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint with 2022 champion Goodnight Olive. The wins were among Ortiz’s tally of 42 graded stakes victories last year, with 15 coming in Grade 1 races. The totals rank first among all jockeys in 2023. Other Grade 1 wins for Ortiz last year included the Curlin Florida Derby with Forte, the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational with Atone, the Resorts World Casino Manhattan with Up to the Mark, and the Just a Game with In Italian. Ortiz won seven consecutive races on the Feb. 3 card at Gulfstream Park. IRAD ORTIZ JR. By Mary Rampellini Tyler Gaffalione achieved two significant career firsts in 2023 that played a role in him being voted an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding jockey. Gaffalione won his first Kentucky Oaks in May, when he guided Pretty Mischievous to a neck victory in the filly classic. By year’s end, Gaffalione had compiled $29,980,952 in mount earnings, which represented his highest total since he began riding in 2014. Gaffalione’s mount earnings ranked second among North American-based riders in 2023. He won 23 graded stakes, which was fourth among all riders. Of those victories, six came in Grade 1 races. Pretty Mischievous overcame post 14 to win the Kentucky Oaks. “I’m so happy I was able to accomplish this, especially being in my home track now, Churchill Downs, and my family is here today,” Gaffalione, a 28-year-old Florida native, said in a post-race press conference. “It’s a dream come true for me. I grew up in this business. I idolize these guys I’m now riding with and competing with. It’s hard to put into words. I just feel so blessed to be given these opportunities.” Gaffalione won two additional Grade 1 races aboard Pretty Mischievous last year, the Acorn at Belmont Park and the Test at Saratoga. Gaffalione also won Grade 1 races last year with Caravel, Gina Romantica, and Gunite. Overall, Gaffalione won 270 races in 2023, third best in North America and one off his career-high of 271 in 2020. TYLER GAFFALIONE By Mary Rampellini Flavien Prat went on a Grade 1-winning tear in 2023, accounting for 13 such races with 12 different horses at tracks across the United States. For his performance at the highest level of the game, he is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding jockey of 2023. Prat, a 31-year-old native of France, won Grade 1 races in Arkansas, California, Kentucky, and New York. His first of the year came in the Beholder Mile aboard A Mo Reay in March at Santa Anita. He scored his final Grade 1 of the year at the same track with Speed Boat Beach in the Malibu on Dec. 26. Prat’s record in Grade 1 races last year was second among all North Americanbased riders. He also ranked second in total graded stakes wins for the year with 41, which was one off leader Irad Ortiz Jr. In overall mount earnings, Prat compiled $26,746,503, third best among riders based in North America. He won 183 races, among them the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in a thriller with Hard to Justify. “She fought back right away as soon as [She Feels Pretty] came along side of her,” Prat told Daily Racing Form. “Every time I asked her to do something, she responded really well.” Prat also won Grade 1 races in 2023 with Angel of Empire, Arabian Knight, Chez Pierre, Matareya, Prince of Monaco, Program Trading, West Will Power, Wet Paint, and Whitebeam. 76 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA BREEDER FINALISTS By Nicole Russo Under the stewardship of Brad Kelley, historic Calumet Farm perennially ranks among the nation’s leading breeders by earnings. That was again the case in 2023 as the farm ranked second to Godolphin by breeder earnings and tied for fourth in the nation by graded stakes wins, with those statistics catching the eye of voters to again earn an Eclipse Award finalist nod. Calumet-bred runners in 2023 were led by a pair of Grade 1 winners in War Like Goddess and Far Bridge, both by the late turf champion and Calumet stallion English Channel. War Like Goddess once again was a prominent player among the top turf females, a division she has been prominent in for several years. She won a pair of graded stakes in her 6-year-old campaign in 2023, highlighted by a late-rallying repeat score in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic against males in New York in the fall. Far Bridge did not miss the board in seven starts this year, highlighted by a win in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational. CALUMET By Nicole Russo Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet again showed its quality at the top levels of the sport in 2023, finishing second to fellow finalist Godolphin by both Grade 1 wins and overall graded stakes wins in North America. Stonestreet bred and raised Goodnight Olive, who is a favorite to repeat as Eclipse Award champion female sprinter. The mare scored a repeat victory in the PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita to line herself up for the honor. Banke also found herself in the winner’s circle with additional Grade 1 winners this season. Stonestreet campaigned homebred Clairiere, an Eclipse Award finalist for older dirt female who added two more Grade 1 wins to her résumé in the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park and Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park. Stonestreet also bred, raised, and sold the young Prince of Monaco – and then, as Banke often does with colts, bought back in for a share. The colt won the Grade 1 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity for a nine-pronged partnership. Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin was a former Stonestreet colorbearer, and the breeding program continues to support the perennial leading sire, with his Grade 1 winners this year including Clairiere. In addition to Curlin, who became the Breeders’ Cup’s leading sire by wins in 2023, several other Stonestreet colorbearers are prominent Kentucky stallions, including homebred Good Magic, a son of Curlin who sired Kentucky Derby winner Mage in his first crop. STONESTREET THOROUGHBRED HOLDINGS GODOLPHIN By Nicole Russo Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum’s international Godolphin operation is yet again a finalist for both the Eclipse Award for outstanding owner and outstanding breeder, looking to sweep both categories for the third year in a row. Godolphin or its Darley banner – the brand that it stands its stallions under – has won or tied for the outstanding owner award six times, in 2006, 2009, 2012, 2020, 2021, and 2022, and has been honored as outstanding breeder three times, in 2012, 2021, and 2022. Godolphin led both owners and breeders by 2023 earnings in North America, and led breeders by both Grade 1 wins, with 13, and overall graded stakes wins, with 29. Godolphin’s homebred Grade 1 winners in 2023 were led by Eclipse Award finalist Cody’s Wish, who took three Grade 1 races, including the historic Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap and a repeat score in the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Cody’s Wish is named for the late Cody Dorman and shared an inspiring bond with the teenager with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that typically takes patients in toddlerhood. Godolphin and trainer Bill Mott’s staff embraced the Dorman family during Cody’s Wish’s career, developing bonds to the point where several were pallbearers at Cody Dorman’s funeral in November, after his passing on the way home to Kentucky following the Breeders’ Cup. Later, Darley in Kentucky welcomed the Dorman family and friends for a celebration of life on what would have been Cody Dorman’s 18th birthday in December.

78 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA OWNER FINALISTS By Nicole Russo Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum’s international Godolphin operation is yet again a finalist for both the Eclipse Award for outstanding owner and outstanding breeder, looking to sweep both categories for the third year in a row. Later, Darley in Kentucky welcomed the Dorman family and friends for a celebration of life on what would have been Cody Dorman’s 18th birthday in December. GODOLPHIN By Nicole Russo The international Juddmonte operation founded in 1980 by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah has continued on at a high level following his 2021 death, with family members taking leadership roles within the outfit. The racing stable had a particularly strong season in North America in 2023 and is a finalist for another Eclipse Award in the breeder and owner divisions. Juddmonte, now with Douglas Erskine Crum as its Chief Executive, has previously been voted outstanding owner in 1992, 2003, 2016, and 2017, and outstanding breeder in 1995, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2009. Juddmonte went from strength to strength with a pair of Breeders’ Cup winners and Eclipse Award finalists in 2023, in Elite Power and Idiomatic. Elite Power’s globe-trotting campaign saw him win four graded/group stakes, capped by a repeat score in the Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita. He is a finalist to score a repeat championship as outstanding male sprinter. While Elite Power was purchased as a yearling, with Juddmonte seeking to diversify its American racing string in recent years, Eclipse Award finalist Idiomatic is a Juddmonte homebred, with her great-great granddam being foundation mare Monroe. Idiomatic added to the family’s legacy by winning five graded stakes, including the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita. Juddmonte also campaigned homebred Grade 1 winners Set Piece, winner of the Arlington Million in its first running at Colonial Downs, and Whitebeam, winner of the Diana Stakes at Saratoga. JUDDMONTE By Nicole Russo Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables enjoyed another consistent year in 2023 to again place the stable among the Eclipse Award finalists for leading owner. Klarman, 66 and a native of Massachusetts, was known for a long ownership partnership with William Lawrence, with whom he campaigned 2019 Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar. The duo won the Eclipse Award as outstanding owner that season. However, Lawrence was in the process of exiting the business, and Klarman kept on. Klaravich was second in earnings and graded stakes wins to the massive Godolphin operation in 2023. One of Klaravich’s standout runners in 2023 was the 3-year-old filly Surge Capacity, who won 4 of 5 starts, with three graded stakes wins, including the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes against older rivals at Del Mar in December in her final start of the season. Klaravich colorbearer Randomized, a finalist in the 3-year-old filly category, won the historic Grade 1 Alabama Stakes, defeated older females in the Grade 2 Beldame Stakes, and was a strong second to another Eclipse Award finalist, Idiomatic, in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Klaravich this year also raced dual Grade 1 winner Program Trading, who took the Saratoga Derby Invitational and Hollywood Derby, and Marketsegmentation, winner of the Grade 1 New York Stakes. 80 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Marcus Hersh Something odd was happening as parimutuel bets placed on the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on May 13 at Belmont Park began accumulating. Bishops Bay, from the barn of multiple Eclipse Awardwinning trainer Brad Cox, was the obvious Peter Pan favorite, yet a colt who had notched a second-start maiden win about two months earlier at Gulfstream Park, Arcangelo, was taking surprising action. For good reason. Bishops Bay, a talented colt, ran to expectations. In the end, Arcangelo simply outran Bishops Bay. The Peter Pan win was only the beginning. The Peter Pan marked the second graded stakes victory for Arcangelo’s trainer, Jena Antonucci. A month later, Antonucci became the first woman to train a Triple Crown winner when Arcangelo blitzed eight rivals, including champion 2-year-old Forte, winning the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths. Antonucci’s homestretch exhortations to her horse and jockey Javier Castellano, directed first at a television monitor in the box seats where she watched the race and then out onto the racetrack, turned into racing’s most memorable moment of 2023. And while Arcangelo’s season ended disappointingly, the colt is an obvious finalist for champion 3-year-old male. A rags-to-riches narrative impels the Arcangelo story. While Arcangelo is by the late Arrogate, a champion himself, he is the only accomplished runner produced by the unraced Tapit mare Modeling. Bred by the Don Alberto Corporation, who paid $2.85 million at auction to acquire Modeling, Arcangelo sold at Keeneland’s September 2021 yearling auction for a mere $35,000, the same as Arrogate’s final published stud fee. His purchaser, Jon Ebbert, who campaigned Arcangelo under the nom de course Blue Rose Farm, had been a small-scale owner and sometime pinhooker since buying his first horse in 2008. Arcangelo had the pedigree to command attention from prominent buyers but went to auction as an immature ridgling who had been diagnosed with inflamed sesamoids and a sire whose star, at the time, had dimmed. Ebbert and Antonucci met at the Keeneland sale the day before Ebbert bought Arcangelo. Ebbert said he knew his purchase would require patience and that he wanted Arcangelo with a smaller stable. After being broken in Pennsylvania, Arcangelo went for further training to Antonucci’s Bella Inizio Farm in Florida. He debuted with a second in December at Gulfstream Park, followed by a modest fourth in January, before his maiden win in March. While Antonucci never had trained a horse of Arcangelo’s quality, she held firm to a somewhat unorthodox manner of training the colt while insisting that training alone would get Arcangelo from the Belmont Stakes on June 10 to the Travers Stakes on Aug. 26. During the 10 weeks between races, Arcangelo posted only seven timed workouts. That was plenty. Long, powerful runs past the finish line and onto the backstretch punctuated those workouts, and Arcangelo’s daily gallops brimmed with verve. Racing for the first time over a wet surface, Arcangelo looked like the Travers winner nearly every step of a race he had all but won by the head of homestretch. The margin of victory would be one length. But the Travers would be Arcangelo’s final start. The colt went to California early to train for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic. Physical issues arose. “We ran out of time,” Antonnuci said. But not before Arcangelo provided his connections with the time of their racing lives. 82 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Marcus Hersh A finalist for a Cartier Award as Europe’s leading 2-year-old of 2022, Auguste Rodin has pulled off a most unusual double as a finalist for an Eclipse Award in 2023 as North America’s leading 3-yearold male as well as male turf horse. Barbara D. 84 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Marcus Hersh A chestnut Good Magic colt with a pronounced parrot mouth lined up in the starting gate to race for the first time on Jan. 28, 2023, and at odds of 11-1 ran off to a fast, decisive, and impressive seven-furlong maiden win. But when Mage’s connections came back five weeks later in the Fountain of Youth, a Grade 2 route race headlined by 2-year-old champion Forte, it felt like a case of too much, too soon. As it happened, it was just enough at just the right time. Mage finished a troubled and encouraging fourth in the Fountain of Youth and was even better in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby, where Forte nipped him after Mage endured the tougher trip. And on the first Saturday in May, Forte standing on the sidelines, Mage sliced through the 15 horses ahead of him halfway through the race and won the 149th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve by two lengths. The victory resonated with Eclipse Award voters and has made Mage a finalist in the 3-year-old male division. The Derby would be the last win of Mage’s career, and the colt was retired with just two victories, but Mage got the one that counted, winning the Derby with authority. Mage’s Venezuela-born trainer, Gustavo Delgado, welcomed Venezuela-born jockey Javier Castellano as Castellano trotted back after the first Derby win of his long career. Castellano gave Mage a perfect ride in the Derby and could do so because Mage had been perfectly prepared. Rather than setting him back, that second-start attempt at the Fountain of Youth had set Mage on a path to rapid development. Delgado’s training methods stood out even more than the aggressive schedule, Mage posting long, slow workouts that typically began at a crawl and hit their crescendo past the finish line. Mage, out of Puca, by Derby winner Big Brown, was entered and withdrawn from a November 2022 sale as a weanling, then sold as a September yearling for $220,000. The pinhookers who bought him hit a single, not a home run, when Mage sold for $290,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old breeze-up sale. Mage, owned by CMWLTH, OGMA Investments, Sterling Racing, and Ramiro Restrepo, posted his first official workout in July 2022, before getting on a serious breeze pattern in the fall that led to his January unveiling. Mage’s second-best performance of the year came in the Grade 1 TVG.com Haskell Stakes, where he returned from a two-month layoff and at the quarter pole ranged alongside eventual winner Geaux Rocket Ride before tiring late to finish second. The race looked like a strong prep for the Travers Stakes – but wasn’t. Mage never really lifted his hooves in the Travers, finishing last of seven in his last start. Two weeks after the Derby, Mage, favored for the only time in his career, could not reproduce his Derby-winning form, finishing third in the Preakness. Walking back to the stables with Mage, assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr. seemed as resigned as he was disappointed at the result. Mage had made four starts in the four months of his racing career and clearly had peaked in the Derby. Regression seemed all but inevitable returning on short rest. Yet Mage’s place in history had been secured. “He won the Derby,” the younger Delgado said. “They can’t take that away from us.” Mage Own: CMNWLTH OGMA Investments, LLC, Sterli Ch. c. 3 (Apr) EASMAY22 $290,000 Sire: Good Magic (Curlin) $50,000 Dam:Puca (Big Brown) Br: Grandview Equine (Ky) Tr: Delgado Gustavo(0 0 0 0 .00) 2023:(70 7 .10) Life 7 2 2 1 $2,507,450 105 2023 7 2 2 1 $2,507,450 105 2022 0 M 0 0 $0 - 0 0 0 0 $0 - D.Fst 6 2 2 1 $2,488,700 105 Wet(297) 1 0 0 0 $18,750 85 Synth(268) $0 Turf(255) 0 0 0 0 $0 - Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 - 26Ý23=12Sar my 1² 48 1:11¨1:36¦2:02¦ Travers-G1 85 4 /7 5§ô 6¨ô 7¬ 7¦¦ 7¦ª Prat F 126 4.70 77= 10 Arcangelo¦ Disarm§ô Tapit Trice©ô Pinch after st, tired 22Û23=12Mth fst 1° C 47 1:11¨1:37 1:49§ Haskell-G1 98 4 /8 6ª 6¨õ 5¦ô 2Ç 2¦ö Castellano J J 122 4.30 82= 15 Geaux Rocket Ride¦ö Mage§ Arabian Knight§ Rally 4w, bid, 2d best 20Ü23=13Pim fst 1± 48© 1:13§1:37 1:55 Preaknes-G1 94 3 /7 4¨ 3¨ô 5¨ 3§ 3§õ Castellano J J 126 *1.40 89= 04 National TreasureÇ Blazing Sevens§õ Mage§ô 4wd 3/16,even finish 6Ü23=12CD fst 1² ý 45¨ 1:10 1:36 2:01§ KyDerby-G1 105 8 /18 15¦¥16¦¨ 6§õ 2Ç 1¦ Castellano J J 126 15.21 96= 08 Mage¦ Two Phil'sô Angel of Empire¨ Rally 5-7p,bid1/8,edge 1ß23=14GP fst 1° ý 46¨ 1:10¨1:36¦1:49¦ FlaDerby-G1 94 4 /12 12¤õ11«ô 7ªô 1Ç 2¦ Saez L 122 4.70 92= 09 Forte¦ Mage§ Cyclone Mischief§ Off slow, circle 5wd 4à23=14GP fst 1 24 :47¨1:11©1:43 FntnOYth-G2 88 6 /9 4¦ô 3¦ô 3ô 4¦ 4«ö Castellano J J 119 5.90 83= 11 Forte©ô Rocket Can¦õ Cyclone Mischief¦ Hit gate,bmp,5-3w,stdy 28â23= 2GP fst 7f 22¨ :45©1:10 1:22§ Md Sp Wt 70k 89 2 /8 4 1ô 1ô 1© 1¨ö Perez E L118 11.60 93= 10 Mge¨ö BourbonResolveö Summonyourcourge¦ 2p,cued upr, went clear Barbara D. 88 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Steve Andersen A wildly successful three-continent campaign in 2023 left the young filly Mawj as a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the outstanding turf female as well as champion 3-year-old filly of 2023. In the days after the Breeders’ Cup, Godolphin announced that Mawj will spend this winter in Dubai, delightful news for racing fans who found her an easy filly to admire throughout the world in 2023. 90 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Brad Free A successful debut season by Pretty Mischievous in 2022 was merely the foundation to a chart-topping campaign in 2023. Pretty Mischievous won four graded stakes, more than any 3-year-old in North America, to emerge as the favorite to win the Eclipse Award as outstanding 3-year-old filly. Pretty Mischievous, trained by Brendan Walsh and owned and bred by Godolphin, never had a bad day of racing in 2023. She made six starts, won four graded stakes, finished second in two others, and showcased her versatility capturing two of the most prestigious Grade 1 races for her division – the Longines Kentucky Oaks at 1 1/8 miles and the Test Stakes at seven furlongs. Sandwiched between the Oaks at Churchill Downs and Test at Saratoga, Pretty Mischievous scored a narrow victory in the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont Park. By the end of the year, Pretty Mischievous was in elite company – one of only five horses in North America to win four or more graded stakes. Pretty Mischievous was cut out to be special. Sired by Into Mischief, she was the second runner produced by Grade 1 winner Pretty City Dancer. Pretty Mischievous went 3 for 4 as a juvenile, but Walsh felt she had more to give at age 3. Pretty Mischievous launched her campaign Feb. 18 at Fair Grounds, winning the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra by three-quarters of a length. But next time out, she squandered the lead and finished second in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks. Despite losing by more than three lengths, it was on to the Kentucky Oaks. Walsh decided on a key equipment change into the biggest race of her career. Pretty Mischievous would wear blinkers for the first time in a race when she started from post 14 in the Kentucky Oaks. Walsh’s reasoning: “We just wanted to get her to focus a little better.” The outside post was a tough draw for the filly, who was reunited with jockey Tyler Gaffalione. Wide-trip worries proved well founded. Pretty Mischievous lost ground on both turns. No matter. Forwardly placed in fifth, she broke it open into the Churchill Downs stretch, led by three lengths at the eighth pole, and held on to win by a head. Pretty Mischievous was not done yet. She shipped to Belmont to win the Acorn Stakes by a head, and followed with a heartbreaking victory in the Test. Pretty Mischievous was on her way to a creditable runner-up finish when leader Maple Leaf Mel broke down in deep stretch. Pretty Mischievous crossed the wire first, winning her third straight Grade 1. A runner-up finish by Pretty Mischievous in the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx Racing turned out to be the final start of her 2023 campaign. After shipping to Santa Anita for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, she became “dull” and was scratched. Pretty Mischievous won four races and $1,703,250 from six starts in 2023 and is scheduled to return as a 4-year-old in 2024. 92 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, The Jockey Club, FanDuel, and produced by the NTRA By Brad Free From spring to fall, from maiden victory to Breeders’ Cup runner-up, Randomized delivered an exceptional 2023 campaign worthy of Eclipse Award consideration as outstanding 3-year-old filly. Randomized raced from March to November in 2023, but it all started at the 2021 Keeneland September yearling sale. A filly by Nyquist bred in Kentucky by Cove Springs LLC, Randomized was purchased for $420,000 by Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables and later sent to trainer Chad Brown. Her only 2022 start was a third-place finish in a summer maiden race for 2-year-olds, after which Brown put her way. In her workouts prior to a March 2023 comeback at Aqueduct, Randomized touted herself. She ran accordingly and scored a highly rated (92 Beyer Speed Figure) maiden victory by more than five lengths. “Off that race, I jumped her all the way up into a Grade 1, which shows how much I thought of her,” Brown said. It was too much, too soon. Randomized finished sixth in the Acorn at Belmont. “I was really scrambling afterwards, second-guessing myself,” Brown admitted, and lowered his aim for the filly’s next start at Saratoga. “We took her back into a listed race, and she got back on track, ran very fast in that race, and confirmed what I thought about her. We were on our way to [campaigning] her like a Grade 1 horse.” Following the 97-Beyer win in the Wilton Stakes, Randomized returned to Grade 1 company at Saratoga. The 1 1/4-mile Alabama Stakes for 3-year-old fillies would test her stamina and class. Randomized started at 7-1 and would employ her chief attribute – speed. Joel Rosario rode Randomized in the Alabama. She jumped to the lead, rated easily on a slow pace, and widened through the lane. She won by four lengths with another big figure, a 98 Beyer. The next challenge for Randomized was against older fillies and mares in the Grade 2 Beldame at the Belmont at Aqueduct meet. As it turned out, the race was not so challenging, after all. Only four entered, Randomized was the lone speed, and she coasted to an odds-on victory by nearly four lengths. Randomized was on a roll, with three highly rated wins leading to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita. However, her win streak was a series of slow-pace front-running trips. That was not likely in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. On the other hand, Randomized was a 3-year-old with only six career starts. She had room to improve. Ridden by Irad Oritz Jr. in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Randomized made the lead while hounded by the older filly Idiomatic. Randomized fought back when collared and kept fighting after being passed. Randomized finished second by a half-length in an outstanding performance to cap an outstanding season in which she won four races and $930,750 from six starts. Plans call for Randomized to campaign as a 4-year-old in 2024. 94 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Brad Free Hopes were high for Clairiere long before she started. After all, when she began racing in 2020, she was one of the most impeccably bred juvenile fillies in North America. By the time her career ended in 2023, Clairiere had compiled an on-track résumé that matched her pedigree. Sired by Curlin and the first runner produced by multiple Grade 1 winner Cavorting, Clairiere is an Eclipse finalist as outstanding older dirt female of 2023. It is a familiar role. Clairiere was an Eclipse finalist as outstanding 3-year-old filly in 2021 and older dirt female in 2022. Sustained excellence was an enduring trait of Clairiere, though she entered her final campaign with little to prove. Grade 2-placed as a juvenile, she had won Grade 1s each of the next two seasons for Stonestreet Farms owner-breeder Barbara Banke, trainer Steve Asmussen, and regular rider Joel Rosario. The question for Clairiere in 2023: Would she continue to excel? Veteran mares can lose interest as they grow older, but that was hardly the case for Clairiere. After finishing third in the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Clairiere was given a four-month break before launching her 5-year-old season in the Grade 2 Azeri Stakes on March 11 at Oaklawn Park. A late-runner, Clairiere settled in her standard position at the back of the field. She inched closer while saving ground on the far turn, was briefly blocked into the lane, switched out, and finished willingly behind Secret Oath. Clairiere finished second by 2 3/4 lengths. The comeback prep served its purpose, and Asmussen trained Clairiere toward the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap on April 15 at Oaklawn. She had finished second in the Apple Blossom the year before. For her second shot at the prestigious springtime race, Clairiere faced three rivals. Clairiere raced third in the strung-out field, and Secret Oath again got first run. It looked like Clairiere might have to settle for second. She faced a four-length deficit at the eighth pole. But another trait of Clairiere is her kick, and she was rolling. She lengthened stride, collared Secret Oath in deep stretch, and drew off by a halflength. Clairiere was back, as good as ever. Two months later at Belmont Park, she won her second Grade 1 of the season, rallying from last to win the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps. It turned out to be her final victory. Clairiere finished second in the Grade 2 Shuvee at Saratoga, was unplaced on a wet track in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga, and finished fourth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita, beaten less than a length. Clairiere has retired from racing to become a Stonestreet Farms broodmare, having campaigned over four seasons. In 2023, she won two races and $1,150,800 from six starts. Overall she won eight races and $3,266,392 from 22 starts. Her six graded stakes wins include four Grade 1s, and she concludes her racing career as one of top females of her generation. 96 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Brad Free Goodnight Olive had a tough act to follow in 2023 while trying to match her 2022 championship campaign. 98 The 53rd Eclipse Awards, presented by FanDuel TV, John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA By Brad Free Despite a glittery pedigree and towering physique, Idiomatic was an unheralded allowance filly when she began her 2023 campaign in January at Turfway Park for owner-breeder Juddmonte Farms and trainer Brad Cox. “We didn’t have any idea at that time she would turn into what she has become,” Cox said. But the trainer knew she had all the right ingredients. “Big, huge Juddmonte pedigree, and by a worldclass sire [Curlin]. When you look at it overall, it’s no shock she’s as good as she is.” Idiomatic, whose stakes-winning dam Lockdown is a sibling to Grade 1 winner Close Hatches, rose to fame in 2023. A big filly at more than 17 hands, Idiomatic won 8 of 9 starts, including the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She won more graded stakes (five) than any horse in North America and emerged as the favorite to be named the Eclipse Award winner as outstanding older dirt female. It did not start out that way. Idiomatic entered the year having won only 1 of 3 starts. She won her debut, finished third in an allowance, was off seven months, and finished a modest third in her comeback in late 2022. Her 4-year-old campaign in 2023 unfolded with hardly a blemish. Her first start of the year was in January on the synthetic track at Turfway Park. “That’s where she did most of her training. We thought we would keep her on that surface and at some point, transfer over to the dirt,” Cox said. Idiomatic made it look easy her first start of the year, in an entrylevel allowance. She won by more than six lengths, followed by a second-level allowance victory. After winning the $245,000 Latonia Stakes, again at Turfway, it was time to address the challenges of class and footing. Switching to dirt for the Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes at Belmont Park, Idiomatic did not pass the test. In her first graded race, she pressed the pace and finished a distant second. Could it be Idiomatic was merely a synthetic specialist who had been exposed? Hardly. Idiomatic did not lose again. Under new rider Florent Geroux, she wired the Grade 3 Shawnee at Churchill Downs, then overcame a stumble to win the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap. Her final three starts of the season were in Grade 1 races. She wired the Personal Ensign on a sloppy track Saratoga, winning by four lengths. Next out, she took advantage of an easy pace to wire the Juddmonte Spinster at Keeneland by more than four lengths. On to Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Idiomatic broke from an inside post and pressed the pace set by Randomized. She took aim at the front-runner into the stretch, but her rival would not go away, even after Idiomatic gained a halflength advantage. Idiomatic maintained her margin to the wire to cap an outstanding season in which she won eight races and $2,400,280 from nine starts. Her career total: 9 for 12, with earnings of $2,456,840.
