MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARIES
Jayanta Dey & Debashish Banerjee
Dear Residents of Uniworld City,
We welcome you to the 5th year of celebration.
Someone earlier said that we live in an island away from the city, and the best we could do is
celebrate our festivals together. We believe in the true spirit in which the events are performed
throughout the year. It is with this hope that we pray to invoke Ma's blessings to continue to perform
the events. It is this hope that gives us wings to aspire and achieve.
What we have done in the past few years and specifically the last year, where-in we were able to bring
the community together and had one Durga Puja and all the festivals throughout the year, will surely
be an example to our children, friends and neighbor for the years to come.
Our celebrations in the past have always meant a mix of different things for different people – devotion and
worship, bonding with friends and family, elaborate cultural activities and not to forget excellent food which we
all devoured together. This year promises to be no different. The echo of the mantras and dhak, the fragrance of
incense, everyone dressed in their new clothes will transform the Horizons ground into a festive mode and brings
in the magic of togetherness.
We are extremely grateful to all residents of Uniworld City, sponsors and donors for their continuous
co-operation and support for the 5th Durga Puja at Uniworld City. Their devotion, commitment to the
community were unparalleled, without whose support these events would not be successful. Your
generosity will enable us to achieve the commonly shared aspiration.
We express our heartiest thanks to our Mentors for their valuable guidance. We would also like to
thank all the Executive committee members, their family members, Volunteers for the cultural events
as well as other events for all their hard work over the puja days and all the events throughout the
year.
Wish all a very happy Durga Puja & Diwali. We pray to Goddess Durga for all participants of our Durga
Puja for their success and hope that these festivals in coming years will continue to unite community
of Uniworld City and become more and more enjoyable.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who visits all our events and makes them successful. Looking
forward for similar support for years to come.

Looking Back at some other Events of Uniworld City:
RathYatra -2015 -Mr Sidhartha Panda (Heights #1-103)
At Uniworld City, Rajarhat New Town, situated in the Northern outskirts of Kolkata, we celebrated the Rathayatra
with much pomp and glory. But do you know the story behind it, how did it begin? Let me brief account of the
origin and the form in which Rathyatra is performed at PURI at the Lord Jagganath temple.
The magnet that binds all and pulls to Puri is Jagannatha – The Lord of the Jagat (masses). Jagata ra Naatha Aahe
Jagannatha. The cult to which all the people of Odisha and many more in Bengal connect to is the Jagannatha
cult. What is this cult and why is it different and attractive. On one hand we have Sri Chaitanya who through his
kirtans praised Him and sought Him. He left his mark in his grand abode. On the other hand we have Salabeg,
though a Muslim by birth, was always attached to Jagannath. Irrespective of cast, creed, and religion people
could worship Him and so Jagannatha.
When the keepers of the Puri temple imposed restrictions on who could come in and who could see the Lord, all
could not come to Him. The Lord then decided that, “If my devotees cannot come me, I will go to them”. Thus
started His journey from the palatial abode to visit His aunt. The journey done on His chariot , Nandighosh along
with his brother and sister in their respective chariots, Taladhwaja and Debadalana marked the beginning of this
mass phenomenon where the Lord has come out to see his people and being seen by them. Since He is outside
the confinement of the temple walls, any one could come to Him and see him worship him in other words meet
the Lord directly. This is the essence of Rathayatra.
Year 2013, a group of residents in Uniworld decided to perform Rathyatra.
Year 2014, as the number of residents grew, so did the group of enthusiast bhaktas. Largely led and encouraged
by Mr. Nihar Mishra and astounding help from Mr. Barun Panda, this group of Odias set out to make this an Odia
cultural gathering. Much to their own surprise, it turned out to be a big success due to the generous
contributions from many residents and large gathering. The concept was not to collect any chanda and try to do
the best we can with our own contributions. Such was HIS magic that it laid the foundation for a Puja committee.
Year 2015…an important year for all Jagannatha bhaktas. This is one of the wonders and unique facts about our
Kalia suna, as many call Him with love. Jagannath is the only God whose idol is made of wood(hence the name
Darubramha) and changed once every such year where there are conditions such as Joda sravana (2 sravan
months as per Odia hindu calendar). This year was all the more special as it was after 19 years that this change of
material body was to happen. This is called Nabakalebar. This year Rathayatra is special as all aspects and
portions of the rath are newly built to receive the newly built Idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra.
Sharing another unique fact about Jagannath- He is considered the 9th Avatar (reincarnation) of the almighty
Vishnu, the creator. Unlike all the previous Avatars, Jagannath is neither a complete human form nor semi animal
form nor is he worshipped alone or with consort. He is worshipped with His brother and sister. Unique as the
facts prove, He still is for all… Jay Jagannath.
Drawn by the wishes of Jagannath and encouraged by the last years response, this year the team wanted to do
more and what they achieved by His blessings. Again inspired by Nihar Mishra, the group (now larger) met 2
months prior to the festival and discussed, Rathayatra and Nabakalebar. We wanted a new Rath, new Idols, new
set of programs and much more participation. The list was big and the budget matched it. Decision was
unanimously agreed after bit of debate, we will do it big this year but our principles of last year would remain –
no chanda collection. The group decided on contributing a measly amount from each Odia family and the rest
would be by sale of subsidized food coupons for main bhog dinner and voluntary contributions. Many of us felt
would we make it, will there be sufficient funds. One statement kept us going, “All is happening with His will, He
will take care”. With this belief in mind, we confirmed the decorator, caterer, Puja pundit and even ordered for
new Rath and idols. People wanted khaja from Puri, that too taken into consideration. Guided and encouraged by
Nihar bhai and other seniors we continued. Our spirits took a big leap when we saw the new Rath and the new
idols made of Neem wood. The vision of the Lord in his Rath became clearer. We all knew that come what may
the celebration will happen.
The program was set by days –
Rath Puja. Nabakalebar Puja, Rath parikrama, Bhog Dinner
Light games in the morning. Evening Aarti, Cultural programs in the evening
Afternoon bhog Arpan, Evening Kirtan and Aarti for 5 days
Bahuda Puja and return Parikrama.
As if to say I am with you, He made it clear that He wanted to be a part of our celebration. Not once during both
the Rath parikramas, did it rain. But it surely did rain before and after. All days during Aarti the weather was
good. At the end we ourselves thought, wow it was good but how smoothly it went, Jagannath was there, all was
His will.
Some figures –
Budget of over 2.5 Lakh was met with no chanda collection.
More than 500 people participated in the bhog dinner catered by Dalma
More than 100 participants performed on stage during cultural events
8+ families offered bhog cooked from home, every afternoon.
Uniworld Puja committee had generously donated Rs. 50000/-.
Maximum people who pulled the Rath were in age group below 15 years.
The energy in the air, the chants of “Jay Jagannath”, the sound of ghanta, kirtan and dhol, bhaktas flocking to see
the lord, touch the Rath ropes, all of these bound by the strings of devotion, the feeling of unison and submission
to almighty – This is what Rathayatra and the Jagannath cult is known for. If Puri is the sea, at Uniworld we were
like a drop of water from same sea, blessed by the lord Himself. The Odia culture, well depicted in the Bhajans,
classical dance, Sambalpuri folk dance and the food, was very well depicted in the celebration and performances.
Words are not sufficient to describe the energy and enthusiasm of the residents: one has to be there to
experience it and to relate to it. Leaving you with some memories captured through camera and hope to see you
there, next year, in front of the Lord at Rathayatra 2016.

There was a baby sperm whale named Bumper. Bumper had sharp teeth as big as an eraser. He
was as big as a minivan. He follows his mom through the ocean everywhere he swims. His mom looks like
Bumper except his mom is big as a school bus. Her teeth are as big as three inches. They lived in the sea.
It was huge. One day when Bumper and his mom were out for a swim Bumper started to feel hungry. He
told his mom and his mom said, “There’s a big squid next to the rock. I’ll get them for you to eat.”
When Bumper and his mom started to go, there was a really strong wind that blew both of them
in different directions. Then the wind stopped and Bumper realized that he lost his mom! Bumper didn’t
know what to do so he started swimming. Then he saw a Great White Shark. It had a black on top and
white on the bottom. It had teeth as big as an eraser too. The shark’s name was Bigmouth. Bigmouth was
an adult shark. Bumper said, “My name is Bumper.” Bigmouth said, “My name is Bigmouth.” Bumper asked,
“Can you help me find my mom?” Bigmouth said, “I’ll be happy to help you find your mom Bumper”. So
they started searching.
They went deeper and deeper in the sea. It started to get darker and darker. Then they saw a
Giant Squid! Bumper yelled, “Lookout!” Bigmouth was planning to smack her tail at the Giant Squid. The
squid was very red, had an eye big as a basketball, and had a beak like a parrot.
When Bigmouth started swimming the squid didn’t know what Bigmouth would do, so she’d slap
Bigmouth with her tentacles. Bigmouth zoomed out and slapped! Boom, bam, slack, boosh, slam, dam. Now
the squid was redder than red and hot. So, it swam away. Suddenly they saw an orca! Bumper thought
“Orcas are very friendly.”
Bigmouth said “Orcas eat Great Whites! But I know a way to escape. Orcas can’t drive as deep as
Great White Sharks, so I could dive down 1000 feet deeper.” Bigmouth started zooming down so fast!
The orcas didn’t even know Bigmouth started to dive.
Bumper started to worry. He thought he’d never find his mom! Suddenly Bumper thought he saw
his mom. He saw something huge like his mom. But it was grey instead of blue and blue was the colour of
Bumper and his mom. Bumper thought “Who is that strange creature?” He asked Bigmouth, “Can we go to
see what creature that is?” Bigmouth said “Ok let’s go.”
The view started to look brighter and brighter since they were going higher and higher. When
they finally reached to the creature, it wasn’t a creature. It was a rock that looked like Bumper’s mom.
Bumper was sad because he thought he found his mom. He wanted to give up but he couldn’t because he
loved his mom so much. So he continued searching for his mom.
When Bumper looked he saw something blue swimming toward him. It had teeth big as three
inches like his mom. It was shaped like his mom. Bumper went up to the creature. It was his mom!
Bumper swam closer and hugged his mom as tight as he could. So they went home and ate squid.
