The Algarve

A Brief History

Human presence on the Algarve dates to Neolithic times, with the region being witness to various visitors ever
since including Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans (there are excellent examples of Roman settlement at Estoi
(Vila Milreu), and near Vilamoura (Cerro da Vila)), Visigoths and the Moors who ruled for over 500 years from
711. During this time, the region was known as ‘Al Gharb’ – the western part of Muslim ruled ‘Al-Andalus’. The
city of Silves, being an important trading port at the time, acted as capital for many years and the region bears
many marks to its Moorish past in terms of place names, agriculture and architecture. It was not until the 13th
Century that the Moors relinquished control to the Kingdom of Portugal and from 1471, King Afonso III, reigned
as ‘King of Portugal and the Algarve’. This separateness from the rest of Portugal remained for many centuries
with the region being a semi-autonomous area with its own Governor and taxation system until as late as 1808.

Silves Castle

In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the Navigator based himself near Lagos, directing various maritime expeditions
which established Portugal as a major power during the era of the ‘Voyages of Discovery’. Lagos became the
region’s capital, and it was not until 1756, the year after the great Lisbon earthquake, that Lagos lost its seat of
power. The earthquake and the accompanying tsunami damaged and destroyed much of the coastal region
except for Faro which was protected by the sandy banks and islands of the Ria Formosa lagoon, now a natural
park.

Faro Old Town

During the Napoleonic wars, Spanish troops occupied the Algarve in 1807 but were driven out the following year
and after the establishment of the first Republic in 1910, the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarve ceased to
exist, with the Algarve being fully incorporated into the Portuguese Republic.

From the 1960s, the region became a popular destination for holiday makers attracted by an excellent year-
round climate (over 3000 hours of sunshine annually with virtually no rain during summer months), relatively
low prices and of course what are now regarded as some of the finest beaches in Europe. To this day, the region
remains one of the most popular summer destinations for both the Portuguese and European markets and now
also attracts a growing number of foreigners who have settled permanently.

Geography and Economy

Separated from the rest of Portugal by the hilly interior of the Serra de Monchique (reaching over 900m at Foia),
and the Serra da Caldeirão, the interior remains sparsely populated and is dotted with small hamlets,
farmsteads, country lanes, forests of cork oak, eucalyptus and pine. Agriculture still plays an important part of
rural life with much locally produced produce being brought down to the coastal towns to sell at the various
daily and weekly markets. Handicrafts also remain an important part of life, with many artisans making excellent
pottery, lacework, basketwork, embroidery and of course the famous and stunning ‘Azulejos’ - tiles of many
different patterns and colours.

Monchique

The coast with its various towns and cities is where much of the 460,000 inhabitants live and work, either in
traditional industries such as fishing and agriculture, or service industries - the main sector being tourism. The
cosmopolitan towns of Faro, Lagos and Portimão act as administration and shopping hubs and provide a distinct
contrast to the slower rhythm of life in the hills. The resorts of Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago, Albufeira,
Vilamoura and others have become established holiday destinations known on a national and international
level. The sleepier towns of Tavira, Silves and São Bras de Alportel provide a reminder of the past with their
cobbled streets, historical architecture and relaxed atmosphere. To the east, the coast is flat and bordered in
part by the large expanse of sand banks, lagoons, and islands which form the beautiful Ria Formosa natural park,
home to a myriad of waterfowl and marine life. To the west, the coast is more dramatic with cliffs, coves and
little bays providing scenic backdrops and picturesque beaches and ending with the towering cliffs of Cape St.
Vincent, a windswept land once thought to be the end of the World. Heading north along the ‘Costa Vicentina’,
the Atlantic breakers create dramatic seascapes bringing Europe’s finest surfers to ply their skills over the waves.

The Algarve has much to offer the visitor from sun-drenched beaches, excellent cuisine, friendly people, a
slower pace of life and stunning landscapes. We hope that you enjoy your experience and wish to return again
and again to sample the many delights of the Algarve.

Places of Interest

The Algarve coastline stretches for some 180 kilometres and offers an amazing variety of exploration
opportunities, from golden beaches to natural parks and historic towns and castles to great shopping and leisure
facilities – the choice is endless!

Vila Real de Santo António sits on the river Guadiana and is famed for its grid like city plan. Here, you can catch
the ferry across the border to Ayamonte in Spain or take a day trip along the river to enjoy the beautiful local

scenery. It is also worth visiting nearby Castro Marim where the walls of the 13th Century hilltop castle remain.
Beyond the walls, you will find the Reserva do Sapal, a nature reserve on the salt flats of the Guadiana estuary
famed for a great variety of birdlife including storks, black-winged stilts, flamingos and sandpipers.

Tavira is considered by many to be the most picturesque town on the Algarve. Divided by the River Gilão, the
two sides of the town are joined by a Roman bridge. Wander along the sleepy cobbled streets, picturesque
squares, the old historic quarter then head to the river front to savour the gastronomic delights of the many
seafood restaurants.
The beaches on the islands off Olhão (Armona, Culatra & Farol) are considered by some to be the best in
Portugal. They are reached by ferry boat, with regular departures from the waterfront.
The regional capital, Faro, is a town with many interesting nooks and crannies to explore in the Old Town,
including the Cathedral and the Maritime Museum. Or simply go there for the shopping! The town is built
around a harbour and there are some excellent restaurants to be enjoyed.
Loulé is famous for its colourful market. There are numerous stalls selling fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, herbs,
honey, dried fruit and nuts, clothes, shoes and basket ware, to name but a selection. Loulé is also an important
centre of local handicrafts such as copper, leather and ceramic goods. The shopping is good here, too, with an
abundance of shoe and leather goods.
Silves has a lovely Moorish castle to explore and the views from the fortress over the orange groves and beyond
are breath-taking. Once a bustling port where ships would come up the River Arade and load up with oranges,
lemons, figs and cork, it is now a sedate market town. The daily market is held by the riverfront, where there are

Smartavillas.com © 2023

cafés from which to sit and people watch. Cobbled streets lead uphill to the old town and the castle, where
fantastic views stretch across the countryside, still mainly planted with orange and lemon trees. Also, worth
visiting are the Municipal Archaeology Museum and the Cathedral of Our Lady.
Portimão is the second most important commercial centre on the Algarve and has developed over the years as a
residential town. The quayside on the Rio Arade is an ideal place to witness the fishing boats unloading their
catch. There is also a marina for admiring the sailing boats and the leisure craft. It is also the best place to
sample a lunch of freshly grilled sardines accompanied by salad, bread and vinho verde. The main shopping
streets are Rua Vasco da Gama and Rua do Cómercio plus the city centre Aqua Portimão shopping centre. Across
the estuary, you will find the lovely fishing village of Ferragudo, well worth a visit to explore its narrow streets
and sample the slower pace a life while enjoying a meal at one of its many excellent restaurants.

The pretty fishing village of Ferragudo

Inland and nestling in the Serra de Monchique you will find Monchique, and Caldas da Monchique, whose spa
waters have been sampled since Roman times. The wooded hills of the Serra, planted with eucalyptus, pine,
chestnut and cork oak trees provide welcome shade and coolness in the heat of the summer months. Close by is
the highest peak on the Algarve, Foia, which, at 902m, affords the best views on the Algarve. Here and there
along the route to the mountain are strategically placed restaurants with terraces to take in those splendid
vistas laid out below. The town of Monchique is a popular starting point for walks through the woods and is
famous for its unique X-shaped wooden chairs. As well as being a centre for traditional handicrafts such as
pottery and basket ware, its other claim to fame is ‘medronho’ the local firewater distilled from the berries of
the Arbutus unedo, which has berries resembling strawberries and can be up to 90° proof!
A short drive downhill is the spa town of Caldas de Monchique. The medicinal waters were discovered by the
Romans, and their healing qualities have made this a popular venue over the centuries for those wishing to cure
rheumatic and digestive disorders and skin and chest complaints, amongst others. Nowadays the Hotel and Spa

Smartavillas.com © 2023
15

is the centre for many types of treatments and the entrance fee gives access to the sauna, steam room, pool and
water massage facilities. There are tree lined streets and shady squares with cafés and bars.
Steeped in history, Lagos is one of the most popular towns and resorts along this coastline. The beaches here
are fabulous, characteristically sandy coves with the interestingly shaped rocky outcrops framing them. The
town is enclosed within 14th Century walls and dotted around the cobbled streets there are plenty of bars,
restaurants and shops. Sitting on a peninsula is the town of Sagres. The walls of the Fort rise from the southern
tip of the peninsula. Henry the Navigator reputedly founded the Vila do Infante, his school of navigation here,
around 1420. The most south westerly point of mainland Europe, the Cabo de San Vicente, has witnessed many
a seafaring incident over the centuries. The lighthouse is one of the most powerful in Europe and can be seen up
to 55 miles away at sea.
Heading west between the Serra and the sea is the town of Aljezur. Narrow cobbled streets rise to the ruins of
the 10th century fortress from where there are fine views of the valley below and the coast beyond. This rocky
coastline, with the less known sweeping beaches of the western coast, is known as the Costa Vicentina and is a
designated nature reserve. The landscapes are stunning, formed by the sea and the mountains. The beaches are
largely undeveloped and yet popular with surfers and kite surfers due to the prevailing winds.

Tavira & Beyond

Tavira

Tavira

A Charming, charismatic and colourful town...
Once known as the capital of the Algarve, Tavira stands proud amongst Portuguese history books, and you will
not fail to be enthralled by its unspoiled charm, character, and tranquility. Delightful attractions await you
including colourful cobbled streets, the famed Roman bridge over the meandering Rio Gilão, and an intriguing
historical quarter replete with handsome 17th century merchants’ mansions, fine churches and convents of
architectural note all bidding for your attention. Castle ramparts have been faithfully restored housing beautiful
gardens of indigenous and exotic varieties, while pretty squares edged with café terraces offer the perfect pre-
text for lazy afternoons while watching the world pass by. All this can be seen at the 'Camara Obscura' which
delights its visitors with an aerial view of the town. On one side of the river there is a large square which has
entertainment in the summer months, and by crossing the Roman Bridge to the other side, you will find a little
more life in the evenings with a great selection of restaurants tucked away down the cobbled streets and a few
later opening café and bars. There is a range of shops to explore, as well as the old market building faithfully
restored with cafés and artisan stalls, as well as the traditional indoor market selling locally grown produce and
fresh fish. To enjoy and see the full Tavira aspect, take the passenger train which follows a set route around the
town, or you can personalize your experience by taking a ‘Tuk Tuk’ tour in smaller vehicles for two to six people.

Fuseta

An authentic working fishing village blessed with one of the Algarve’s finest beaches…
Fuseta sits between the larger coastal towns of Olhão and Tavira. Colourful, atmospheric and authentic, the
village is uncompromisingly non touristy and all the better for it. With a varied selection of shops and services
and a plentiful supply of tempting restaurants and backstreet eateries, then this is a great spot to enjoy the real
Algarve. Fishing boats leave from one end of the quay, while small pleasure boats and the ferry to the beach
island from the other. Fuseta has a street market on Thursdays and a flea market on the first Sunday of every
month. There is a newly renovated produce market situated on the quayside which is open daily where you can
buy fresh fish, meats, fruits and vegetables. On Saturdays, the market is surrounded outside by many smaller
stalls offering further local produce.

Boardwalk leading to Fuseta Lagoon beach

Moncarapacho

A traditional, sleepy rural town…
This small sleepy country town sits neatly amidst carob and olive laden countryside under the watchful eye of
the Cerro de São Miguel whose hilltop views offer tremendous panoramic vistas across swathes of central and
eastern Algarve. Traditional and very much a working town, Moncarapacho provides for all needs with a
selection of local shops and services. Dotted around the main church square and along the main street, a
handful of restaurants offer enticing menus, often with dish of the day options.

Santa Caterina Fonte do Bispo

A bustling and interesting market town…
The grandly named country town of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo sits in the rolling foothills of the Serra da
Caldeirão, mid-distance between Tavira and São Brás de Alportel and only some 15km from the golden beaches
at Fuseta. Basic amenities including a well-stocked mini-market and a tempting café bakery can be found at the
heart of the village, home also to the famed kilns producing Santa Caterina terracotta tiles, many of which adorn
terraces and swimming pool surrounds across the Algarve.

Aerial view of Cabanas

Cabanas & Conceição de Tavira

A time-honoured fishing village with a modern twist…
Sitting by the coast a few kilometers east of Tavira, Cabanas was once a traditional Algarvian fishing village with
a mix of cobbled back streets and an unfussy waterfront of low-rise buildings looking out across the still lagoon
to Cabanas Island. With the age of tourism, Cabanas and its inland neighbour, Conceição, have grown yet retain
much of their charm. Attracted by fabulous beaches and a varied selection of cafes, bars and restaurants, both
have become popular with Portuguese and foreign visitors alike. The village can be leisurely strolled from end to
end in around 30 minutes and offers an excellent choice of restaurants, bars and cafes catering for all palettes -
most of which are along the waterfront capturing the daytime sunshine. For smaller budgets and a taste of the
real Algarve, there are also several traditional bars and tascas serving typical Portuguese meals in the back
streets at very reasonable prices! The village has two well stocked supermarkets, and there is a daily fresh food
market on the main waterfront, as well as butchers and bakeries. Cabanas is not a destination for those seeking
activity and night life - the atmosphere is generally relaxed and perfect for socialising, relaxing and dining.

Conceição, as a suburb of Tavira and Cabanas has a friendly feel and offers its visitors a warm welcome. Here
you will find here a pleasant selection of cafés and bars where you can sit in the sun and enjoy a refreshment or
two! along with several restaurants offering good quality Portuguese cuisine. The village also has a post office,
cash machine and a mini market.

Cacela Velha

A must visit location during your stay…
Steeped in history, the tiny, whitewashed village of Cacela Velha sits proudly on coastal cliffs offering vistas
across gleaming lagoons to the vast Atlantic Ocean beyond. Settled since Phoenician times and an important
outpost for the Moors, there is much to discover along the cobbled streets including the pocket-sized fort, the
ancient church, a fascinating cemetery and of course the fabulous beach at Fabrica. Despite its size, several cafes
and restaurants can be found dotted about the village.

Manta Rota

A Popular and compact family beach town…
Sitting between Cabanas and Altura, Manta Rota offers a family atmosphere within a low rise, uncommercialised
setting. Tremendous expansive golden sands, backed by impressive dunes, have deservedly been awarded the
Blue Flag accolade, while an ample sprinkling of cafes, bars, restaurants and mini-markets provide for all needs.
With all this on offer, it’s easy to see why Manta Rota is a firm favourite for the Portuguese, who surely know a
thing or two about great beach destinations! In the summer months, there are activities at the beach as well as

market stalls and open-air entertainments in the evening, whilst out of season, Manta Rota is a charming and
laid-back destination. Manta Rota is the ideal place to experience a typical Portuguese holiday, with only the
beach for company during the day.

Manta Rota Beach

Altura

A popular beach town, perfect for family holidays…
This pocket-sized seaside town, popular with Portuguese tourists, offers expansive dune backed Blue Flag
beaches and an array of tempting eateries, serving freshly caught fish and seafood. Unassuming and
conveniently located between charming Tavira and the handsome frontier town of Vila Real do Santo António,
Altura is ideally positioned to enjoy the many attractions of this lesser-known part of the Algarve. With a choice
of supermarkets, cafes, bars, restaurants and other amenities on your doorstep, then use of a car is not essential
while airport transfers can be easily arranged. Dotted around this typical Portuguese town, a varied and enticing
mix of restaurants serve sumptuous dishes, many with very reasonably priced ‘dish of the day’ offerings. At the
beach, two popular beach eateries compete for your attention by the long boardwalk down to the shoreline,
while at nearby exclusive Praia Verde, refined dining can be found enjoying tremendous ocean views.

Historic Castro Marim

Castro Marim

A beautiful town steeped in history…
This compact fortified town on the margins of the expansive Guadiana River boasts a rich history dating back to
Roman times. Overlooking vast salt flats and bordered by the Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim, there is
much to offer the visitor. Whitewashed houses align narrow cobbled streets winding up to the impressive castle
fortifications, whose construction was ordered by King Alfonso III during the XIII Century, with presence on this
strategic site dating back to the bronze age. While away a lazy afternoon visiting the castle grounds and enjoy a
favourite tipple in one of several bars and cafes dotted along pretty tranquil streets. For provisions, several mini-
markets offer the basics, while larger supermarkets and an excellent selection of shopping facilities can be found
in the nearby handsome border town of Vila Real do Santo António, just a short drive away.

Beach Tips

▪ The official bathing season is usually mid-June to mid-September. During this time, trained lifeguards
will be in place to assist in case of distress.

▪ There is a flag system of green, yellow and red to advise beach goers of the condition of the sea – green
meaning safe to enter the water, yellow meaning safe but caution should be taken, chequered meaning
no lifeguard on duty and red meaning do not enter the water (fines in place for non-compliance).

▪ Most beaches will also have sunbeds and parasols for hire (prices depend on the location).

Food & Drink I Comida & Bebida

Traditional Algarve cuisine has much to offer and the ideal place to enjoy fresh fish, seafood, a wide variety of
delicious vegetables, fruits and sweet puddings. Mix in traditional meat dishes, great wine, a sunny climate, café
culture and what’s not to like?
Typical starters include ‘Cenouras à Algarvia’ (marinated Algarve carrots), ‘Conquilha à Algarvia’ (cockle clams),
or ‘Salada da Polvo’ (octopus salad).

For main dishes, there is a myriad of choice, and of course fish and seafood are a big feature of any menu.
Perhaps the most iconic being ‘Cataplana’ – a type of fish or fish and meat stew cooked in a ‘cataplana dish’ -
traditionally copper based. When in season, grilled sardines (Sardinhas) are sumptuous, and a local favourite is
‘Polvo’ (octopus) which can be roasted, grilled or fried. These are just a few of the many local dishes on offer
with other worthy mentions being ‘Arroz de Mairsco’ (seafood rice), Bacalhau (codfish), Espardarte (swordfish)
plus many many others..

Smartavillas.com © 2023
42

Not forgetting meat eaters as there is plenty of choice for you too! A traditional favourite is ‘Frango no
Churrasco’ (grilled chicken), which can also have an added kick to be ‘Frango Piri Piri’ (sorry Nando’s but ours is
much better!). From the hills, ‘Javali Estufado’ (wild boar stew) is a rich dish best served with a good red. Other
flavoursome dishes include ‘Arroz de Pato’ (duck rice usually served with chorizo). Accompaniments vary and
typically include tasty, sweet onion and tomato salads, rice, vegetables and potatoes; both boiled, roasted or as
homemade chips. Of course, fusion cuisine is all the rage these days, so you will also see a mix of Portuguese
cuisine and other influences, in particular ‘Petisco’ or tapas style eateries.
Moving on to dessert and be prepared for a sweet tooth extravaganza! Dessert can be very rich but rest assured,
you can always opt to fruit, or a simple coffee should you not be inclined. Typical sweets include ‘Molotof’ – a
baked meringue in caramel; ‘Pudim flan’ - a crème caramel; ‘Arroz doce’ – rice pudding; Bolo or Mousse de
Chocolate’ – chocolate cake or mousse; or a local favourite, ‘Bolo da Alfarroba’ – carob cake.

Whichever meal you choose, we hope you enjoy the gastronomic experience!

Portuguese Wines

Smartavillas.com © 2023
45

There are three levels of wine quality in Portugal. You can identify them by looking at the wine label. These are:

DOCs / DOPs

At the top of the hierarchy, there are 31 DOCs / DOPs (Controlled Designation of Origin & Protected of Origin).
Each of these regions has its own strictly defined geographical boundaries with strict rules on grape varieties,
yields, testing and tasting.

IG / IGP (Regional Wine)

The country is divided into 14 wine regions (see map). Although recent EU rules have introduced new titles for
these regions (IG – Geographical Indication / IGP – Protected Geographical Indication), most regions still use the
old Vinho Regional (Regional wine), term. These wines are less stringently governed than DOC / DOP areas. The
looser regulations mean that producers can experiment with grape varieties often leading to greater
individuality.

Vinho (Wine / table wine)

Subject to none of the rules for DOC / DOP and IG / IGP. These can range from very simple wine but also to some
excellent table wine produced from growers willing to work outside the official rules.

Selected Wine Regions

Algarve

Over the last 50 years, many vineyards on the Algarve have made way for tourist complexes and golf courses,
however recently new vineyards have been planted and a burgeoning vine sector is flourishing. With year round
sunshine and coastal coolness, whites and roses can be fresh and appealing and reds aromatic and elegant.

Vinho Verde

This is the largest wine region located in the cool, wet and verdant northwest of the country. Suiting all kinds of
occasions, Vinho Verde is a light, fresh, young and aromatic wine. It can also be a rose, sparkling or red vinho
verde which is best served chilled.

Douro

Long famous as the area of Port wine, the Douro is now also renowned for its fine, rich unfortified wines both
red and white.

Dão

Surrounded by mountains on all sides, this region is protected from the chill and rains of the ocean and from the
extremes of continental climate and can be red or white. Wines tend to be fruity and smooth.

Alentejo

A large sun-baked region occupying the southern half of the country north of the Algarve. In recent years this
area has grown in popularity producing ripe, fruity, easy drinking reds as well as softer whites.

Smartavillas.com © 2023
46

Port Wine

This fortified wine, one of Portugal’s most famous products comes from the Alto Douro Valley region in the
North. The region was first made a DOC in 1758 and the wine is divided into three big families - White, Tawny
and Ruby. White Port offers a range of colours that can vary from pale white to amber. Tawny ranges from
auburn through to copper and amber and Ruby ranges from a light red to a very dark red, almost black.

White Port

Comes in various levels of sweetness from Seco (dry) to Doce (sweet). There is now also a Rose version which
should be served chilled or can be used in cocktails.

Tawny

These have a nutty, dried fruit flavour and can be Colheita (specifying a vintage) or Aged (10 to 40 years).

Ruby

These are redder, firmer and slightly sweeter and fruitier than tawny ports. There are numerous sub-categories,
such as Crusted, Late-Bottled Vintage (LBV), Late Bottled, Reserve, Premium Ruby and Ruby.

0rder Coffee Like a Local!

The national beverage is found at all cafés and ‘pastelarias’ which are an eclectic mix of bakery, café and bar’;
where locals will sit for coffee and snacks at breakfast and along the day. There is a myriad of coffee types so
here’s a short guide to finding the right coffee for you!

Um Café

The café is the simplest and most common coffee you’ll find everywhere. Essentially this is Portuguese espresso,
and will be short, sharp and hot. It goes by different names in different parts of country. So, for example, here
we will ask for ‘un café’ but in Lisbon it is more commonly ordered as ‘uma bica’

Um Café Cheio & Uma Bica Cheia

A café cheio or bica cheia is a small espresso topped up with a little water. The cup will be served about half full
and then topped up with hot water.

Um Café Duplo

This is a double café, a double espresso. The espresso cup will be served full, with two shots of espresso.

Uma Carioca

Uma carioca is a typically weak or mild espresso and ideal for drinking late at night, however methods of making
can vary.

Um Abatanado

Um abatanado is a longer black coffee that will be served in a larger cup. It’s the same amount of ground coffee
as a café but poured for longer. Similar to an Americano.

Smartavillas.com © 2023
49

Um Pingado

Um Pingado is simply a café, served with a small splash of milk.

Um Garoto

Um Garoto, is a slightly larger Pingado. A garoto has an equal amount of milk and coffee and served in the
typical espresso cup.

Uma Meia de Leite

Meia de Leite literally means half milk. Typically served in a larger cup (the same size as an abatanado) and is
around 50/50 coffee and milk.

Um Galão

Um Galão is the closest type that you’ll find to a latte. It’s approximately one quarter coffee, and three quarters
steamed milk. It’s typically served in a tall glass, and sometimes will still be separated when it’s served (you’ll be
given a long spoon to stir).

Um Café Descafeinado
