under a vehicle, no matter what the situation is. Because
wind can pass under the vehicle and through the wheel

sure you have the dog check the other side for hides.
Oftentimes what looks like an alert is actually the dog
trying to get to the source of the odor. A lot of competi-
tors are intimidated by vehicles, but they actually make
for some very fun exterior searches. Some organizations,
such as NASCW (National Association of Canine Scent
Work) and UKC (United Kennel Club) have a component
that requires dogs to search vehicles in order to earn
overall titles. As you advance through the levels, more
vehicles are placed in the search area and more hides are
placed on the vehicles.

THERAPY DOG TEAMS

Not only could therapy teams not visit, but hospitals Molly Bee TDIA, Joyce McIntyre’s first therapy dog
allowed no visitors, and nursing homes, assisted living
facilities, hospice groups, and many places pet thera-
py teams would normally visit were closed to visitors.
Therapy dogs that were active visiting their people and
putting smiles on faces all of a sudden could no longer
share their joy with those that needed it most. In addi-
tion, training facilities closed as well as dog groomers.
Many dog owners found themselves having to do their
own grooming adding even more stress to an already
overwhelming situation. How were we going to meet the
challenge of this drastic change in our lives and the lives
of our therapy dogs?

LIBRARY SYSTEMS BEGAN A
VIRTUAL PROGRAM WITH KIDS
READING TO DOGS USING ZOOM

The library explained how the visits would work and
gave the handler a chance to sign up for a once-a-week
visit. Currently our virtual visits are on Thursday. The
pet therapy team is given a morning or afternoon time,
and they meet on Zoom with a librarian, child and the
child’s guardian. The therapy dog is in view and listens
to the child read to them for about thirty minutes. It is
a great way to keep the connection alive between the
child and the therapy dog. My dogs and I volunteer at
two libraries and after a couple of years we have gotten
to know a lot of the children. It is good for everyone to
connect even if it is through electronic communication.
The child can talk to the handler and ask questions about
the dog. They can also talk to the dog. The dogs some-
times will go to sleep!! (That’s all right; they used to fall
asleep at the library too.)

Tommy Smalley, a cocker breeder and very talented
artist, is willing to draw a picture that can be printed and
sent to the library for children in the reading program to
color. He does a wonderful job and only charges $10.00
for a picture of your dog to be sent to you via email. All
Tommy needs is a photo to get started. Tommy is on
Facebook, but if you need more information, contact me
at [email protected]. Some of the handlers have
made cards from his pictures and sent them to the facil-
ities they visit. There are samples of his artwork in this
article. They are pictures of two handsome buff boys,
Sawyer TDIAOV and Elvis, a newly certified therapy dog.
Both have a beautiful flowing show coat. Owners are
Lori Griffen and Sheryl Gadol, respectively.

CAR RIDES AND SHORT
ROAD TRIPS FOR OUTINGS

Therapy dogs accustomed to going on rides to their
visits still like to take car rides. Maybe have the therapy
dog wear a special collar or their therapy scarf and go
on a ride with their family or another member of their
pack. Even though they aren’t visiting their people, it is
a good change of pace for them. Find some places that
are close to you and just go sightseeing. It would be a
good distraction and change of scenery for the family as
well as the dog. Taking walks in a quiet neighborhood
or countryside will help relieve stress for handler and
therapy dog.
