ZNow we turn to the handler extraordinaire, Mr. Per
Ingar Rismyhr, that managed to pull off the trick of
having two dogs of different breeds, win the two best
in show honors at the ASC Flushing Show, something
that no handler before him has managed to do, to my
knowledge.

Per, congratulations on your Best In Show awards at

One of the tricks on the Novice list that tends to be a
really natural one for our Cocker Spaniels is the ‘Fetch
It’ trick. The dog has to chase something (ball, toy, etc)
from at least ten feet away and bring it within two feet
of the handler. Most of the Cockers I know are only too
happy to chase a ball or a toy. Sometimes it can be a
struggle to get the dog to actually come back with the
toy. One of the ways that I teach my dogs to bring stuff
back to me is using the Two Toy Game. I know it sounds
complicated, but it isn’t. You use two toys in this game
(surprise!)—throw one for the dog and let them chase it.
If they decide not to bring that toy back, bring out that
second toy, wave it around a bit and make it super inter-
esting. That should bring your dog back (hopefully still
holding the first toy) and you can do a trade. This lets

LEGISLATIVE ALERTS

Dog Breeders and Fanciers

By LINDA WRIGHT (JUSWRIGHT COCKERS), ASC LEGISLATIVE LIAISON

ADDRESSING WHAT YOU CAN DO WHEN ANTI-BREEDER BILLS ARE INTRODUCED.

Greetings, everyone, from snowy Indiana! I hope you are all staying warm and healthy. The question I receive the
most often as ASC Legislative Liaison, is: “What can I do when anti-breeder bills are introduced?” I have included
an excellent piece written by Sheila Goffe, who is the Director of Government Relations at the AKC.

Another exciting new announcement from the AKC Government Relations Department is that anyone wishing to get
legislative alerts via text messages can now do so by texting AKCGR to 50457.

Additionally, if you are on Facebook, consider joining the “American Spaniel Club Legislative Alerts Group” where
I share alerts and helpful information.
