Guest of Honour A very warm welcome to all the delegates and invited guests attending the International Midwives Day Conference 2024 in Bintulu, Sarawak. I am very honoured to be the guest of honour for this health event which brings together midwives from local Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia, plus internationally from Brunei. I give my accolades to the organising Chairperson, Ms Sa’adiah Binti Abdul Rahman and her organising committee for their dedication to make this conference a reality. I am very proud that Bintulu is able to host this conference in conjunction with the International Midwives Day 2024 at an international level. To all the Midwives who are present here, happy International Midwives’ Day 2024 and for showing courage in all you do, “We see you. We feel you,we appreciate you and to all other health professionals working around the clock tirelessly in service, we need you” This conference aim to update Midwives' theory and practical knowledge to ensure quality maternity care rendered to mothers and children and identify collaboration and teamwork among Hospital and community midwives nurses and medical practitioners. As we look to the future, it is imperative that we prioritize investment in midwifery education, training, and resources. Empowering midwives with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need will not only improve maternal and newborn outcomes but also contribute to the achievement of universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. The theme of this year's conference, "Midwifery Beyond the Boundaries: An Untold Journey” speaks to the untold stories, the journeys of courage, resilience, and determination that define the daily experiences of midwives around the world. It is a testament to their unwavering commitment to go above and beyond, often in the face of adversity, to ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of those under their care. It is my hope that this conference can further enhance Bintulu as a platform of choice for more international events and meetings for our health care industries/tourism. Bintulu is a part coastal, part riverine town, and the capital of Bintulu District (7,220.4 square kilometers) in the Bintulu Division of Sarawak, Malaysia. It is approximately 624 km away from Kuching and about 215 km from either Sibu or 205 km from Miri. It is home to about 200,000 inhabitants. Bintulu is known as a place of 'making a living'. Bintulu is also known major industrial centre, and soon to be a capital of energy-intensive industries in Malaysia. One of its most prominent features is the Bintulu Port, which is a major gateway for the export of natural resources such as oil, natural gas, and timber. The town is home to several large industrial complexes, including the Bintulu LNG Complex, which processes and exports liquefied natural gas, and the SamalajuIndustrial Park, which hosts various industries including aluminum smelting and palm oil processing. Despite its industrial focus, Bintulu has retained elements of traditional Sarawakian culture and heritage. Visitors can explore local markets, sample traditional cuisine, and experience cultural events and festivals that celebrate the diversity of the region's indigenous communities, including the Iban, Melanau, and Malay peoples. Bintulu may not be as well-known as some other destinations in Malaysia, it offers attractions for tourists interested in nature, adventure, and cultural experiences. Nearby attractions include Similajau National Park, which features pristine beaches, mangrove forests, and hiking trails, as well as Niah National Park, famous for its limestone caves and prehistoric archaeological sites. The State Government of Sarawak is very pleased to part of the synergy in this conference together with the Sarawak Health Department, especially the Nursing Division within Sarawak Health Department, and the Sarawak Midwives Association. The theme of this conference: “Midwifery beyond the Boundaries: An Untold Journey”, Finally, I would like to congratulate the organizing Committee for this successful conference. I sincerely hope that with the new knowledge acquired and gathered here, all delegates will be able to serve their communities especially the mothers and the new born more effectively and efficiently. Have an enjoyable time and a memorable experience in Bintulu, Sarawak. Thank you YBhg. Datuk Dr. Muhammad Radzii bin Abu Hassan Director General of Health Malaysia 2024 International Midwives’ Conference 5

International Midwives Day is celebrated every year on the 5th of May since 1992. There is a shortage of midwives facing challenges, and experience a lack of support, low status, and poor pay. Midwives save millions of lives every year – Since 1990, the globe has seen a steady decrease in newborn and maternal deaths.
