3. 3.1.Modular design :
description
of MS's STP : To save erection time and to facilitate the
reuse of a plant, MS has taken particular
care in the modular design of the different
sections, not only the desanding section,
but aslo the filter-press section, as well
as pumping units and piping racks.

3.2.Description of the sections :

These STPs comprise 3 sections : L Example of pre-equipped modular
> scalping/desanding/desilting pumping units
> recycled mud management
> excess mud management,

Our originality lies in having developed equipment and techniques specific to each
of these 3 sections :

L Groene Hart
2500 m3/h
M3.2.1.Scalping & Desanding section : (during erection)

in the scalping section, we used either : Pannerdensch Kanaal
trommels in sticky soils (clay, loess…) 1600 m3/h

to avoid clogging, while maintaining a lower
dilution of these fines,
or :
M high energy vibrating screens, in sandy
soils, in order to keep a compact and
modular design.

L Hallandsås 1800 m3/h (during erection) L in the desanding-desilting section, MS proposes complete
L plants with one, two or three stages of high-performance
Toulouse subway cyclones, depending on the geological type of bored soils.
1200 m3/h MS STPs are always designed for a specific job :
from a conventional design we have now moved to monobloc
modular unit design.

Sands are dewatered in order to
obtain a minimal residual water
content.

in underground L
As far as the Recycled Mud Management Section is
works concerned, MS has developed and patented a monitoring
system, designed to assure 4 essential functions :
M Main bentonite > maintaining the balance of the sludge volume, i.e.
preparator « Bentomix » compensate any losses in the ground or elsewhere,
> maintaining the balance of the solids, i.e. compensating
the addition of excavated materials by adding water or
fresh mud, in order to keep the desired density of the
conveying slurry,
> maintaining and adjusting the rheologic characteristics of
the conveying slurry, according to the choice made by the
operator thanks to the information given by the rheometer
(viscosities, densities & Yield value),
> direct addition to P1 of a fresh specific mud for any
particular need, for example to prepare a hyperbaric
maintenance operation.

Supervision view : L MS Rheometer
Mud management

(MS patent)

The MS rheometer is fed by 4 samples of sludge :
> desanded sludge from B2

> regenerated sludge from B1
> sludge returning to TBM, taken from B1-b
> sludge coming from TBM, taken from B3.
Each sample is taken alternatively in a pumping tank fitted
with one centrifugal pump feeding one protection cyclone
and one automatic measuring system, analyzing :

1°) the density,
2°) the plastic & apparent viscosity,

3°) the “Yield Value”

These data are stored by the PLC and displayed as graphs
on the supervision screen. Depending on the evolution of
these values, the operator choose the addition of fresh
bentonite, of polymer or water in order to maintain the
desired rheologic properties of the slurry. In automatic
mode, this system allows to maintain the set value.

3.2.3.Excess Sludge Treatment section :
in the excess sludge treatment section, MS has deve-
loped its own range of filter-presses specially adapted
to this kind of application.
