November 2022

Who is rich? He who rejoices in his lot, as it is said: “You shall enjoy the fruit of
your labors, you shall be happy and you shall prosper.” (Psalms 128:2)

~Pirke Avot 4:1

Dear Temple Solel Family,

During the month of November, in the Jewish calendar, there’s not much going on. It seems like every rabbi I
know heaves a sigh of relief when the month of Tishrei gives way to Cheshvan. We have this gap in the calendar
after the High Holy Days until we celebrate Chanukah in the month of Kislev. We come down from the heights of
spiritual revelation and exaltation and then just simmer for a little while. These refractory periods are necessary
for us to recover our strength and to prepare for whatever comes next.

It seems like there are seasons in our lives like this as well. These may be short term cycles that last a few days or
a few weeks, or they may be longer cycles that can last years. I find in my own creative cycle that there are times
when no new ideas come to me. And then all of a sudden, when I least expect it, a flurry of melodies and thoughts
enter into my imagination. The challenge is finding acceptance with where we are and who we are at any given
moment.

Can we be grateful for nothing? When there are no holidays, no special events, no weddings, no birthdays… when
it’s simply a day of our existence… can we find the joy in that? If we can appreciate life in all its simplicity, how
much greater will our joys be when we experience them? And how much stronger will our resilience be during the
difficult times if we have cultivated a sense of acceptance and appreciation for all that comes our way, including
the challenges and obstacles?

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.”

– Eckhart Tolle

Interestingly, during this time of relative calm in the Jewish calendar, we have the secular holiday of
Thanksgiving. Here is an opportunity for us as American Jews to embrace this national holiday of gratitude. It
makes sense that the Jewish people appreciate gratitude. When Leah gives birth to her final son, she names him
Yehudah. Yehudah is derived from the word, odeh, which means: I will thank. All over the psalms, it talks about
the value of being grateful. Psalm 92 tells us, “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises
unto Thy name, O Most High.” Even the word for turkey in modern Hebrew is ‘hoda,’ from the same root as
hoda’ah, or gratitude.

During this time of relative calm, I encourage us to take a few moments each day to practice being grateful, just
for our own lives and our being. Whether we are rich or poor, sick or well, we can still cultivate a sense of joy in
our lives. We can be happy with our lots, and we will find that there is a lot to be thankful for…

In joy,

Todd V. Herzog

Temple Solel Endowment Foundation

Securing Our Future | November 2022
The Temple Solel Endowment Foundation was created to provide for the long-term financial security of Temple
Solel. That said, sometimes circumstances are such where current financial assistance is required. An example
would be the pandemic or an unexpected non-budgeted capital expenditure when the Foundation increased its
income distribution to $72,000. This increase was well above the Board’s acclamation to limit distributions to
50% of the Foundation’s earnings to grow this organization for future generations, L’dor vador. The vote of the
Board was unanimous.

Over the past five years the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation has been able to assist Temple Solel with
$197,000 in contributions thanks to you, our congregants!!

In 2020 the Foundation made it a little easier to keep operations flowing with the closing of the preschool
through a significant contribution to offset payroll and operating expenses, and no one was laid off because the
school was closed.

Donating to the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation can ensure both the long-term and short term financial
health of Temple Solel.

Here’s the good news! There are various alternatives for you to choose from to continue this valuable support.
Legacy: You can designate a portion of a life insurance policy or a specific donation in your will or trust paya-
ble at the death of the surviving spouse.
Fund a charitable trust to avoid capital gains on the sale of fully depreciated real estate.
Cash is the simplest form of charitable giving, offering you a current year tax deduction.
Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA Custodian payable to the
Foundation. QCD’s can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum
distributions (RMD’s) for the year. which makes it a non-taxable distribution. The maximum annual amount that
can qualify for QCD is $100,000.

As always, please consult with your tax advisor or trust attorney to discuss any of these alternatives to deter-
mine the best solution for your personal situation.
