April 2023

April 2023

Our continual message from the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation hasn’t changed since our inception a little less than 10 years ago. And every article we write to share with our members the importance of ‘securing our future through the Endowment Foundation” this message doesn’t change. As we think about Passover, this month of April, we are also reminded that we build our present and secure our future because of that past. The Endowment Foundation does just that; we build for our future for Solel and our community. We lost a special member in March, one of our biggest supporters of the Endowment Foundation and a friend too many of us, Nelson Lerner. If anyone inspired us to live every day to the fullest, it was Nelson, but to ensure Solel’s future through the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation. Nelson was a special, dedicated human being whose passion for our Temple and the importance to grow our foundation was only like a few others. Nelson taught us to be steadfast in our goals, do the right things, be honest, trustworthy and have the passion of being part of Solel. He would always come up with new ideas to build our foundation, communicate with the members of how important this fund was for our future. An endowment fund, as Mary Ann Bloom wrote in our March article said, “an endowment fund is permanent, creating a pool of charitable dollars that can address the needs of our temple (now if absolutely necessary) and its future.” By contributing to the foundation, your legacy, Nelson’s legacy (and his contributions) will go beyond your lifetime. Contribute to the foundation – Any amount and Any time. There is no limit to either. Besides using all those Charitable Tax advantages. Trust me I know. Do It Now! Honor your children, Honor your legacy and Honor Nelson Lerner. Contact Robert Simon for any questions at [email protected] Fondly, and appreciatively of your time, efforts, and contributions to Solel Endowment. 3 Dear Solel Family, This month, even as we celebrate the holiday of Passover, our story of liberation and freedom to worship God as we wish, we also commemorate the Holocaust. As the voices of those who experienced this horrific event in human history are becoming fewer and fewer, it is even more important for us to carry on the memory of those lost through culture and song. The words to this piece were written by Avraham Sutskever during his time in the Vilna ghetto. It was later put to music by Abraham Brudno and first featured in the play Di Yogenish in Fas(the hunt in the barrel, a pun on Diogenes in a barrel). What is amazing is the author’s ability to maintain his sense of faith and hope, even in the face of impenetrable darkness. He is staring up at the stars from the basement, speaking to God even though he has no place to pray. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit that we are able to call upon resources beyond our own capacity in order to overcome that which oppresses us. After the Vilna ghetto was liquidated, Sutskever went on to fight with the partisans and managed to survive the war. Brudno was sent off to a German concentration camp in Estonia, where he lost his life in 1944. After my divorce, music helped to ground me again, and I used creativity and singing to instill hope and a sense of direction in my life. When I felt at my lowest, music was the one thing that could express the brokenness I felt within me and bring healing to my soul. Now that I am entering into a new phase of life with my marriage, music expresses the joy and wonder of hope and a new beginning. Each generation that is born expresses possibility for the future. It is also important for us to look back and remember. We will use music to commemorate the darkness of the Holocaust with a Yom HaShoah program at Congregation Beth Israel at 4pm on April 16. I will be singing this song as part of the program. In the meantime, I invite you to listen to a beautiful version of the piece here: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=TFMhWeW36y4&t=99s May we all use music and culture to remind us of the immense power that resides within us that we can access at all times… In song, Todd Herzog Cantorial Soloist Hope in the Darkness Under Your white stars Extend Your white hand to me My words are tears Which want to rest in Your hand See how they’ve lost their gleam from the vantage of my cellar - and I haven’t even a corner in which to pray

4 APRIL 2023 / ADAR —NISSAN 5783 Brains and Bodies Moving with Music! In her article “Beyond Twinkle, Twinkle: Using Music with Infants and Toddlers, Rebecca Parlakian explains how musical activites “simultaneously promote development in multiple domains.” Her article further discusses how music plays a role in promoting physical, cognitive and emotional skills for young children. Of course the use of music in curriculum is well known among early childhood educators and is a strength here at The Solel Preschool. Evidence of this can be seen on a daily basis throughout our school. Music and the movement that accompanies it encourages the development of both gross and fine motor skills, body awareness and coordination. “ Jammin with Judy” a once a week music and movement special taught by Judy Isaac for our toddlers and two’s classes uses instruments, music and dancing to advance the physical development of student while having fun and acting silly. Additionally, our classrooms from infants to Pre-K are filled with movement songs whether its “Wheels on the Bus”, “Animal Action”, “Shaking Your Sillies Out”, “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” (in English and Hebrew) and countless other movement songs. The ultimate goal is the same physical movement enabling the development of these essential gross and fine movement skills. For cognitive development including literacy and language skills, the benefits of Music are endless. Patterns, sound and letter recognition as well as comprehension of vocabulary are all enhanced with the use of music. The repetitive nature of songs is especially helpful for toddlers to learn language and routines. Classroom circle times are used by our teacher’s incorporating songs and movement to set routine and encourage learning of patterns and language. “Days of the Week” and “Look Who Came to School Today” are just a couple of examples of songs that can be heard in our hallways accomplishing this goal. Let’s not forget the tried and true class “Clean Up Song” loved by teachers in Early Childhood Centers everywhere. Songs are also incorporated in The Solel Preschool curriculum to teach concepts and there is no better example of this than our use of songs in our teaching of Jewish Holidays. Most of our preschoolers can tell you about the dreidel made of clay or that Haman’s hat has three corners all through the use of songs that fill our holiday units. As Passover approaches, songs like “Oh Listen King Pharaoh” will teach the story of the Exodus better than any words in a book. And “Pat the Matzah, Flat, Flat, Flat” will familiarize these eager young learners will the symbols of our holiday. The 3 year old and 4 year old classes will share a seder using a Haggadah filled prayers and songs to highlight our holiday. Perhaps the greatest benefit music provides in early childhood might be the least noticed and that is the emotional development it provides. Whether it is Ms. Alla and the Infant Room Staff providing soothing comfort through a lullaby or our older students learning from their teachers’ dance moves that its okay to be silly…music provides a safe place. Our Monday Morning Havdalah led by Ms. Robyn, Tunes with Todd and Shabbats with Rabbi Linder and Rabbi Stiel fill our school with music and create a community where are students, parents and staff feel connected, joyful and comfortable. • Our 3’s & PreK classes are singing the National Anthem at the D-Backs Game April 23, 2023 Tickets available through the Preschool Office. • The Solel Preschool is Cruising into Summer Camp Registration has begun Toddlers through Second Grade Welcome! -Jackie Siamon *Enrollment for the 2023-24 school year has begun at The Solel Preschool. APRIL 2023 / ADAR —NISSAN 5783 5 Hello Temple Solel Families! I just returned from a wonderful and thought provoking conference in Houston, one that brought Jewish educators together from all over the country. It was put on by ARJE, Association of Reform Jewish Educators. The theme of the conference was, Healthy Leaders, Healthy Learners: Supporting the Well-Being of our Whole Community. Besides being back in Houston, where my late husband and I lived for many years, being around other professional educators, Rabbis, Cantors, professors, etc. was quite the highlight. While as educators we all had similar challenges, it was the common thread of "Well Being" that was so obvious. I look forward to adding more to what we at Temple Solel can do for our youth, for their well being. Something perhaps as simple as a place to hang out! I leave you with 5 Simple Rules for Happiness from CHAI MITZVAH: Free your Heart from Hatred, Free your Mind from Worries, Live Simply, Give More , Expect Less L'Shalom, Tobee Waxenberg Rosh Chodesh This Month: The Women of The Wall Wednesday, April 19, 2023 6:30-7:45pm – Food, Socializing, Learning & Blessing the New Month Dear Rosh Chodesh Sisters – Did you know that women cannot take a Torah scroll to the Western Wall and read from it? But there is a group, known as the Women of the Wall, who have been working for decades to change that. Rabbi Stiel will talk about this brave group of women who go to the Kotel (Western Wall) each month to pray on Rosh Chodesh. Their case has come before the Supreme Court of Israel and the Knesset – as they try to get an egalitarian space at the Wall where all of us can read Torah and pray together. Rabbi Stiel will share the history and also the challenging experience of praying with this group in Israel for Rosh Chodesh Adar last month! Please bring a dish to share for our potluck dinner. We will meet in the Temple Solel library. Registration information is in eNUZ. All who register will be sent the article. *We use an inclusive definition of “woman” and “female” and welcome trans women, genderqueer women and non-binary people.

6 APRIL 2023 / ADAR — NISSAN 5783 Temple Solel Book Club April Zoom Events Jewish Meditation Tuesday April 11, 2023 April 25, 2023 10:00-10:30 am Lunch & Learn Wednesday April 5, 2023 (CANCELLED) April 19, 2023 (See page 7) 12:00-1:00 pm Fellow Book Lovers, Thanks to Gayle Pincus and Steve Slogoff for leading the discussion on March 21. This month we will meet on April 11 at 6 p.m. for our dairy/pareve potluck and will add Zoom attendees at 6:30 to discuss One Mile and Two Days Before Sunset by Shimon Adaf, an Israeli author. It's the first book of the Lost Detective Trilogy, a murder-mystery that plays with time-warn noir tropes, such as "the hard-bitten detective moving through the night time city, the goons that trash his office and then beat him senseless." The book has both the atmospherics of a noir novel and erudite Jewish content. As of the date of this writing, the discussion leader also remains a mystery; perhaps it will be you? On May 16, our book will be Unstoppable, about a Holocaust survivor named Siggi Wilzig who arrived in NY penniless and built a $4 billion oil-and-banking empire. The author is Joshua M. Greene, with a foreword by Holocaust scholar and President Biden's Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Debra Lipstadt. https://www.goodreads.com/book/ show/54396808-unstoppable Come June 20, we will be back exclusively on Zoom and will read The Lost Shtetl by Max Gross. This debut novel won the National Jewish Book Award and the Jewish Fiction Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries. According to Amazon.com, it was "written with the fearless imagination of Michael Chabon and the piercing humor of Gary Shteyngart—about a small Jewish village in the Polish forest that is so secluded no one knows it exists . . . until now." Thank you, Myra Baum, for the recommendation. Upcoming dates: July 18 and August 15, only on Zoom. There will be no meeting in September due to the High Holidays. Happy reading, Judy Schaffert - [email protected]

Prior to the JCC’s opening, he taught Modern Hebrew at Krakow’s Jagiellonian University Department of Jewish Studies for 6 years and founded the “Gesher” association for Polish-Israeli dialogue.A native of NewYork City, Jonathan moved to Israel in 1994, living for 7 years on a kibbutz in the Negev desert and served in a combat unit in the I.D.F. before moving to Poland in 2001. He is a founding member of the Krakow Association of Christians and Jews where he serves as vice president. He also serves on the boards of the Krakow branch of the Child Survivors of the Holocaust organization, Hillel Poland, JCC Global, and the Abraham Global Peace Initiative. Please join Rabbi Linder and the Temple Solel community for this incredible opportunity to hear from Jonathan Ornstein at our April 19th Lunch & Learn! “Pesach Moon” at Torah Study This month in Torah Study we celebrate Pesach, one of several “full moon” festivals on the Jewish calendar. Jews are often more familiar with the lunar aspect of Rosh Chodesh or “new moon” festival, when just a tiny sliver of moonlight can be seen. But on Pesach, as well as on Shavuot and Sukkot, the moon shines brightly with maximum radiant glory. Moon festivals are special events in Jewish tradition. They are celebrated with music: “Sing unto God, take up the timbrel, blow the shofar at the new moon and at the full moon of our feast-day” (Psalm 81). In addition, moon festivals are associated with female divinity, and with the regenerative cycle of birth, death, and renewal. Moon festivals also connect us to our pagan roots – the time when our indigenous Hebrew ancestors found God in nature, in the raw earth and vast celestial sky. On Pesach, we call upon these ancestors during our evening seder. For example, we invoke the spirits of the prophets Elijah and Miriam. Tradition tells us to open the door for Elijah and invite him to sit at our seder table. Later, we open the door for Miriam, but we don’t welcome her in. Rather, we step outside and join her in gazing at la luna extraordinaire. With grace, Miriam invites us to sit at her “seder table” – a tableau of blessings from wild nature and wild spirit. We hear angels sing: “Hallelu Yah, praise God, sun and moon, and all you stars of light” (Psalm 148). And miraculously, the Pesach moon – the first full moon of spring – reflects the fullness of heart we feel in receiving God’s countless and magnificent gifts. Torah Study meets in-person in the Temple Solel library and also on Zoom every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. See eNUZ for Zoom link. Please join us! Matthew Kozinets
