August 2023 FINAL

August 2023 FINAL

THE MISSION OF TEMPLE SOLEL IS TO BE A VIBRANT, INCLUSIVE AND ENGAGED REFORM COMMUNITY, GROUNDED IN RELATIONSHIPS AND DEEDS, AND ELEVATED BY SHABBAT AND TORAH. As many of our students are returning to their classrooms in early August, I want to share this article with you about the importance of the uniqueness of our children. I read this article, “WELCOME TO HOLLAND” by Emily Perl Kingsley, several years ago. It was recently shared with me again by a fellow educator and it was still quite impactful. It is a well written piece explaining what we as parents expect and want for our children; however, our children often chart their own course! And it is that course, while sometimes rocky and challenging to support, make our children very special humans! WELCOME TO HOLLAND I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability-to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this… When you are going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation-to Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks and your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas of Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting. After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.” “Holland?!?” you say. What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.” But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place. So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would have never met. It’s just a different place. It’s a slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around….and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills….and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy….and they’re all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say, “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.” And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away… because the loss of that dream is a very, very significant loss. But..if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things…about Holland. Here in AZ, the kids go back to school in August! I will admit, I don’t fully understand it. It’s not like it will be cooler in August for the kids to head back to school, as opposed to starting in September… but here we are. On one hand, it’s sad that summer is ending… on the other hand, it’s a time when we return to our communities, our friends, and our routines. Our first day of religious school will be on August 13, and The Tribe will be back in full swing. If you haven’t heard of The Tribe, it’s the group of 5th-12th graders who make up a musical group that plays at t’fillah and at family Shabbat services during the year. Anyone in that age group who is part of religious school is welcome to join us – singers, pianists, clarinet, violin, guitar… they’re all welcome. If you have a child who’s musical, please let me know and I’d be happy to personally reach out to them. Part of the goal of our youth and family engagement effort is to help people connect to Judaism and their community through their own personal talents and gifts. The Tribe is one such opportunity. On another musical front, the choir is getting back together after a long break. We’re gearing up for the High Holy Days. Rehearsals will begin on August 9th and will continue on Wednesday nights through the holidays. We’re always looking for new singers to join us. No prior experience is necessary – just the ability to find joy in the music. If you’re new to the Solel community (or even if you’ve belonged for years), this is a great chance to make some friends, enhance your personal spirituality, and provide inspiration to the whole community. Please drop me an email at [email protected] to find out more. Both of these musical paths allow us to feel connected to one another and to God through something we really enjoy. Whether it is one of these opportunities or something completely different, I encourage you to participate in an activity. As with everything else in life, the more you put into the community, the more you will get out of it. 4 A u g u s t 2 0 2 3 / Av - E l u l 5 7 8 3 The Solel Preschool Begins Another Great Year Camp Solel has officially ended and we are getting ready for another year of playing, growing and learning at The Solel Preschool beginning August 9th. Here a few tips to help get ready for the new school year. Make sure to meet the teacher and visit the classroom before school starts, if possible. Even if a child has been at the school before, they will have a new teacher and a new classroom. Knowing the classroom and teacher ahead of time will help ease the beginning of the year anxieties. Children do well with routine, so establishing a school routine early is important. Start working on establishing routines for getting up and going to bed at specific times to help make the start of school easier. Get appropriate gear for your preschooler. Make sure your child’s backpack can hold a lunchbox and any other items you feel they need for school. Talk and read about school. Make books about school with your child. Share how much fun you had in school and answer any questions they might have. Encourage independence. Real tasks allow children to learn to take care of themselves and have a sense of accomplishment. Choosing clothes for the day, getting dressed, and cleaning up after meals are all tasks that can help work towards being independent. Keep having fun and continue doing family activities that keep you connected to your child. We have many engaging programs available for our students and families. Anyone may attend our monthly Kabbalat Shabbats (4:15PM), our weekly Friday morning Tot Shabbat service (9:30AM), and our FREE children’s services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Go to our website for a calendar of all our events. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email or call. Linda Irish, The Solel Preschool Director Some Lessons for Highly Effective Jewish Grandparents: Tips on How to Enhance/Sustain Your Grandchildren’s Jewishness Adapted and summarized from “10 Attitudes of Highly Effective Jewish Grandparents” booklet by Joel Grishaver Joel Grishaver is a prolific Jewish educator. Here are insights he shares for grandparents who want to encourage Jewish living. As the new year 5784 approaches, parents and grandparents might want to consider these suggestions. 1. Ask the Right Question – What kind of Jews do you want your grandchildren to be and how can you help that development? Work on the quality of Jewishness. 2. Grandparents get to introduce their children to cholent and its magic. Introduce your grandchildren to some of the special aspects of being Jewish- and share the awe and wonder. 3. Be a curator – Share Jewish family recipes, stories and memories. 4. Become a story teller. Tell the story of your family. And buy Jewish children’s books and share those with your grandchildren. 5. Be there in times of pain. Grandparents are inherently survivors. Be available when your grandchild has experienced a death or other loss. Just letting them know, “I know that feeling, too” can be helpful. Let your grandchild know that you are available as a refuge for them. 6. Support Jewish schools, Temples, and summer camps so that they will be there for all Jewish families. It is getting harder to fund Jewish programs. Each generation can help the next.

Patty Hruby is a retired elementary school teacher who is now pursuing an art career. Her works are done with watercolor and pen & ink, and they illustrate the beauty of nature and the majesty of our Higher Power. Her pieces are filled with the words of her mantra, Barukh Atah Adonai. She was introduced to "mantra art" as a type of meditation sixteen years ago, and it has become her primary form of art. Patty is the sister-in-law of our Temple members, David and Faith Boninger. She resides in Scottsdale with her husband, Ron Boninger. Patty has also written a book entitled Two Worlds: A Family Memoir of the Holocaust, Intermarriage, and Love. The book tells the stories of the Boninger and Carter family members who survived the Holocaust, as well as Patty's marriage to Ron. After their marriage, Patty became close with Ron and David's Grandmother, Edith Carter, who survived Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. Edith and Patty worked together to write Edith's story in order to preserve it for the family. Patty included the story in her memoir. The book can be found in our Congregation's library and is also for sale in our gift shop along with Patty's art. Temple Solel Book Club Fellow Book Lovers, Thank you to the leaders of the June discussion of The Lost Shtetl by Max Gross and the July discussion of Fly Already by Etgar Keret. We continue our summer meetings on Zoom only. In-person potluck dinner meetings resume in October. Our members' poll showed a split of votes, with most wanting every-other-month meetings and one suggesting 8 meetings a year, skipping the High Holidays month, December, and two summer months. The 8 months compromise seems wise, so we will try it this year and revisit next summer. This month, on Tuesday, August 15 at 6:00 p.m., we will read The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish. It's a longer book than we usually read, but even if you don't finish reading it in time, please do come to the discussion. Marcia Rudin in Reform Judaism describes the book this way: Helen Watt, a British expert in Jewish history, and her research assistant Aaron, have found evidence that Ester Velasquez, a Sephardic refugee in 17th-century London, was the anonymous scribe of a trove of newly-discovered documents in Portuguese, Hebrew, Latin, and Castilian found hidden behind a wall of a London mansion undergoing restoration. National Jewish Book Award winner Kadish alternates the personal narratives of Ester, Helen, and Aaron. She "interweaves her themes and characters’ journeys so skillfully, one can’t help being drawn into their lives and empathizing with their personal struggles." We could use a discussion leader and encourage you to step up. There will be no meeting in September to prepare for the High Holidays. On October 17 we resume in-person meetings with a family story, The Oppermanns by Lion Feuchtwanger. "A long-forgotten masterpiece published in 1933 and recently reissued with a revised translation by the novelist Joshua Cohen . . . The novel is an emotional artifact, a remnant of a world sick with foreboding, incredulity, creeping fear, and—this may feel most familiar to us today—the impossibility of gauging whether a society is really at the breaking point." -- Gal Beckerman, The Atlantic Upcoming meetings: November 21, January 16, 2024, February 20, March 19, April 16, May 21, August 21 Happy reading to all, Judy Schaffert ([email protected]) Mah Jongg at Temple Solel Join us every Thursdays from 1-3 during the month of August. Want to learn how to play? Lessons are available. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan on joining us.

A u g u s t 2 0 2 3 / Av - E l u l 5 7 8 3 7 “Reality Diving” at Torah Study This summer, I enjoyed reading David L. Lieberman’s new book, “Transcendental Judaism: Enlivening the Eternal Within to Uplift Ourselves and Our World” (Resource Publications, 2023). One of the book’s fascinating ideas is that Reality is larger than what we typically see during the course of our daily activities. The human eye is simply too limited to grasp everything that exists at all levels of life. Fortunately, modern technology has given us tools to observe aspects of Reality that earlier humans did not know about. For example, telescopes show us distant galaxies, and microscopes enable us to see tiny organisms. But, as David asks, is there anything else we are missing? Thankfully, in addition to modern technology, Jews possess the ancient technology of Kabbalah, writes David. In particular, Jewish mystics use meditation exercises to penetrate the everyday world. Kabbalistic reality spelunkers attempt to see all beings at the soul level. Diving below the surface of the material world, they find a flow of life-force energy (“ruach”). At best, they reach an eternal realm, a place of silence and stillness, where all life begins (“ein sof”). Through the daily use of meditation, mystics visit this quiet place to be renewed again and again. Certainly, Judaism is famous for being a loud religion. We blow shofars. We debate the Torah. We speak truth to power. Jews today are challenged to reclaim the calm at the heart of our tradition, says David. But, hopefully, with the regular practice of meditation exercises, we can return to the “small voice of silence” (1 Kings 19:12). Transcendental Judaism invites us to relax, get still, and find our way home. I highly recommend David’s wonderful book, available now on Amazon. Torah Study meets via Zoom during the summer, every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. See eNUZ for Zoom link. Please join us! Matthew Kozinets Thank you for Solelebration! First and foremost, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Solelebration committee members: Perry Simons, Sarah Sukta, Eve Danoff, David Greenbaum, and Brent Adleman. Your dedication and hard work are truly appreciated. Mark your calendars! We are delighted to announce that the date for Solelebration 2024 has been set for March 2, 2024. It's going to be a memorable event you won't want to miss! Many of you have been curious about the Solelebration caterer; Robert's Catering is located at 46 E. Galveston in Chandler, AZ. For any inquiries or to make reservations, please contact them at 480 963-4040. Facilities: In our commitment to providing the best facilities for our community, we have recently completed some significant upgrades. The Solel Preschool now boasts brand new countertops, adding a fresh and modern touch to the space. This upgrade not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes a clean and organized environment for our little ones. Furthermore, we have taken steps to enhance the security at The Solel Preschool entrance. The safety and well-being of our children are of utmost importance, and these measures will provide additional peace of mind for parents and staff. Additionally, we have installed extra security cameras throughout our campus, ensuring a secure environment for everyone. We are also thrilled to announce that, thanks to generous grants from The Silverman Foundation, we will be upgrading our phone system. After months of extensive research, we have identified the best service and equipment to meet our needs. Phone equipment testing will commence this month, and we are excited for the improved communication capabilities it will bring. These updates and upgrades are a testament to our dedication to creating an exceptional experience for our community. We look forward to sharing more exciting announcements in the near future. Stay tuned!

10 A u g u s t 2 0 2 3 / Av - E l u l 5 7 8 3 Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Securing Our Future | August 2023 Our family of four arrived in Scottsdale, Arizona during the hot summer of 1975. Our two children, David and Debbie, were enrolled in local schools and Betty and I began searching for a temple in the area. We learned about a congregation that was meeting in a local church and we joined that congregation. Time passed and a church building became available for purchase on E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley. A group of members including Betty and I organized to purchase the property. The congregation moved in and setup an operating synagogue called “Temple Solel”. A search was made for a permanent full time rabbi, and Rabbi Maynard W. Bell was hired in 1977. Under the leadership of Rabbi Bell, I became interested in the temple’s Torah collection in 1983. I learned about Sephardic Torahs and discussed this with the rabbi. We agreed to add a Sephardic Torah. I located a Sephardic Synagogue in Los Angeles and made a visit to see their beautiful collection. After more research I ordered one that year from Israel for our temple. David and Debbie both attended religious school at Temple Solel with Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies. When David married in Santa Barbara, California, Rabbi Bell officiated at the wedding ceremony. He also married Debbie here in Scottsdale, Arizona. When my granddaughter, Emma (Debbie’s daughter), had her Bat Mitzvah at Solel we celebrated this event with a B’nai Mitzvah ceremony. Together Emma and I stood on the Bimah and recited our Torah portions from the Sephardic Torah. That day was one of my most memorable experiences at Temple Solel. For many years Temple Solel has been a major center for Reform Judaism in the Phoenix area. Under the direction of Rabbi John Linder and Cantorial Soloist Todd Herzog for the past 15 years and more recently with Rabbi Debbie Stiel, our temple has been a major religious leader in the valley. We have been interacting with many of the non-Jewish religious organizations helping to bring together all religious groups. At many of our Shabbat services I can recall seeing many non-Jewish leaders seated on the Bimah, being introduced and speaking. I believe this is a unique attribute of our Solel leadership and is what makes me so proud to be a member of Temple Solel. Our Temple leaders and entire staff have always been supportive to the membership in times of loss of loved ones. When my parents and Betty’s parents passed away, there was a wonderful outpouring of sympathy from the Temple. This helps so very much to ease these very sad and stressful moments. The Temple Solel Endowment Foundation provides a major source of financial support to the Temple. The Foundation is a reservoir of money to assist with urgent needs and special programs. I find it rewarding to contribute to this Foundation that supports our religious community in so many positive ways. Our Temple Solel membership since 1975 represents 48 years of our lives. We are pleased to look back over this time period and share with the temple staff and membership our Temple Solel story. Respectfully, Betty and Bert Feingold Save the Date! Our first Rosh Chodesh Event of the Year A Festive Sukkot Potluck Evening October 3, 2023 at 6pm at the home of Helene Weitzenkorn We hope new and old friends will join us. This event is open to all female and non-binary Temple members. Look for more information in our September Pathfinder and eNUZ.

A u g u s t 2 0 2 3 / Av - E l u l 5 7 8 3 11 Caring Community News Four of the many values of Judaism include building community (Kehillah) through acts of loving kindness (G’milut Chasadim), giving generously to those in need (Tzedakah), visiting (Bikkur Cholim) those who are ill and those who we haven’t seen for a while, and making the world a better place (Tikkum Olam). The Caring Community serves to focus on these values. The Caring Community now consists of five teams: the Correspondence team, Meal Prep team, Delivery team, Bereavement team and the Visitation Team. Our membership has grown to include 40 wonderful volunteers. We are always available at a moment’s notice to help our Solel Community. We continue to provide meals to families experiencing health issues. The past month 12 meals and several soups were provided to five families. Cards have been sent to those experiencing health issues and to those who are bereaved. Since COVID many of us have kept away from services and other activities for fear of contracting the virus. We have established a new team of volunteers who will be reaching out to congregants and offering to visit with them in their homes. Our hope is that congregants will continue to feel connected to their Temple Solel Community through this new program. We hope when we call that you will allow us to bring Temple life to you.
