March 2023

“One must drink on Purim until that person cannot distinguish between cursing Haman and blessing Mordechai.” - Megillah 7b Dear Solel Family, This month we celebrate the holiday of Purim. It has become a tradition to mark the holiday with parodies of the Megillah and with drunken festivities. As in the quote above, we are told that it is a mitzvah to imbibe on the holiday. But how much is too much? We often receive conflicting advice about the role of alcohol in this festival. Apparently, early celebrations of Purim made no reference to drunkenness and emphasized reading the scroll of Esther with great care and reverence. It was only in medieval Europe that the tradition of wearing masks and taking part in drunken revelry came into fashion. German Jews in particular developed the tradition of the Purim Spiel, which was a rowdy play based on the Megillah. Our sages have weighed in over the years about the right amount of alcohol to consume. Rava claimed that one must become ‘fragrant with wine’ until distinguishing between Mordechai and Haman was impossible. The opposite approach is attributed to the late 11th-century North African halachist Rabbenu Ephraim ibn Avi Alragan. He claims that based on the story of how, after getting drunk, Rabbah gets up and slaughters R. Zeira, we reject the statement of Rava, and it is wrong to act in such a way. Maimonides, on the other hand, said that enough alcohol to fall asleep was sufficient. Maimonides finds support in the interpretation of the Maharsha, another Talmudic sage, who interprets the story as merely figurative language. By encouraging R. Zeira to drink to the point of getting sick and almost dying, it is ‘as if’ he butchered him. However we choose to interpret the words of our sages or what we decide is the right level of celebration, I hope we’ll all choose to drink responsibly… and call an Uber! We’ll be celebrating together at Temple Solel on the evening of Monday, March 6. The Megillah reading will take place in the sanctuary at 5:15pm. A kid-friendly dairy dinner will take place in the social hall at 6:00pm, followed by a costume parade and Purim spiel (We Don’t Talk About Haman) based on Disney’s ‘Encanto.’ Extra points will be given for kids dressed up as Mirabelle or Bruno. The spiel will be topped off by a make-yourown sundae dessert. Looking forward to seeing you there… Wishing all of us a joyous and safe Purim, Todd Herzog Cantorial Soloist The Mission of Temple Solel is to be a vibrant, inclusive and engaged Reform community, grounded in relationships and deeds, and elevated by Shabbat and Torah. We see the divine spark in each individual by together: Warmly welcoming all who enter Nurturing lifelong learning Creating joy through prayer and music Celebrating holidays and sharing life cycles Fostering a love of Israel, and Working for Tikkun Olam – repairing the world How Drunk is Drunk?

This masquerade holiday is truly a favorite for our students. We love to dress up (another chance to wear those Halloween costumes) and retell the story of Esther, Mordechai, Achashverosh, Vashti, and Haman (Boo)! We sing our favorite Purim songs, shake our groggers and make hamentaschen with Ms Cherie! Giving gifts to friends, as well as, to the needy is a Purim tradition. Mishloach manot (gift baskets) might include treats, baked goods or any other fun items for a family. Some families cook and deliver a meal for a needy neighbor or collect canned goods to donate to a food pantry. Our 3’s classrooms will be performing at our evening Sports themed Tot Shabbat on March 3rd. Following the service we will gather for a pizza dinner. Spring Camp theme this year will be “Circus Solel – Big Top Fun”! We have lots of fun activities planned for our camp week! To avoid any confusion, we ask that you be sure to include the intended rabbi’s full name in the memo portion of your check and/or on any correspondence that accompanies your contribution. Thank you! Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Securing Our Future | March 2023 “I did not find the world desolate when I entered it; those who came before planted for me before I was born; so do I plant for those who will come after me.” Talmud, Ta’amit 23a We are indebted to our ancestors. Just as we enjoy the fruits of our ancestors labors. We must strive as they did to insure the future of the next generations. And at the same time, all of us are seeds of the future…of those who succeed us. We dream dreams. We see visions. We hold convictions. We make decisions and the end result is one we know only others who follow us will see and benefit from. An endowment fund is permanent, creating a pool of charitable dollars that can address the needs of our temple and its future. Have you ever dreamed you could give a gift that would keep on giving? I have always wanted to be remembered positively forever. As I prepare my taxes for 2022, I am thinking about what my charitable donations for 2023 will be. The Solel Endowment fund is at the top of my list. The endowment fund is a unique way to go beyond your lifetime to further the mission of Temple Solel for generations beyond our own. I hope you consider a gift to the endowment fund at the right time and the right amount that works for you … informed, of course, by appropriate legal and financial counsel. 6 M a rc h 2 0 2 3 / A d a r - N i s a n 5 7 8 3 Temple Solel Book Club Fellow Book Lovers, This month, on March 21 we will meet for our 6 p.m. dairy/pareve potluck to discuss Beach Music by Pat Conroy. It's a long book, so start reading at the beginning of the month. Jack McCall, living in Rome with his young daughter, struggles to find peace after his wife’s suicide. His sister-in-law arrives and begs him to return home, and two school friends ask him to help track down a third classmate who went deep underground as an anti-war protester. Jack's journey takes in the past and the present in Europe and the American South, and leads him to shocking and ultimately liberating truths. Read the book to discover its Jewish connection. On April 11 we'll discuss One Mile and Two Days Before Sunset by Shimon Adaf, the first book of the Lost Detective Trilogy. It's a murdermystery that plays with all the old noir tropes, such as "the hard-bitten detective moving through the night time city, the goons that trash his office and then beat him senseless." The book has both the old-time atmospherics of a noir novel and also erudite Jewish content. On May 16, our book will be Unstoppable, about a Holocaust survivor named Siggi Wilzig who arrived in NY penniless and went on to build a $4 billion oil-and -banking empire. The author is Joshua M. Greene, with a foreword by Holocaust scholar Debra Lipstadt. https://www.goodreads.com/ book/show/54396808-unstoppable Upcoming dates: June 20, July 18, and August 15, only on Zoom. There will be no meeting in September due to the High Holidays. Happy Reading! M a rc h 2 0 2 3 / A d a r - N i s a n 5 7 8 3 7 We Need to Know… Please inform the Temple Solel office when a family member or friend is in the hospital. Too often we find out about illnesses, crises and hospitalizations long after they occur. This is a missed opportunity for visits from the rabbi and calls from the Caring Community as well as other assistance offered by the temple. We need your help in order to offer ours. If you’d like to let us know about a member that is ill, has a surgery date coming up, or is experiencing any other health-related issue that the rabbis should know about, please call the temple office at 480.991.7414, ext. 126 or email Tara at [email protected]. Volunteer Recognition Volunteers are an essential part of Temple Solel. We would like to thank the following volunteers for their time and efforts: Birthday Calls Erica Bonime Knitting for a Purpose Carol Brillman Jill Loebel Beverly Nathan Margie Rahilly Linda Ribnik Beth Sennett Lisa Trotta Nancy Weinstein Gail Zucker Yahrzeit Notices Cynthia Marcus Family Promise Susan Wine Bob Ransom Natalie Neer Hart Dottie Braun Cohen Dean Scheinert Mary Ann Bloom Helene Weitzenkorn Lauren Brown Jacqui Rick Lisa Banen Would you like to volunteer at some point in the future? We’d love to have you! Email [email protected], and we’ll add you to our volunteer email list for upcoming opportunities. Thank You! “Reunion” at Torah Study This month in Torah Study we read about the Mishkan – the holy tent that the Israelites built out of wood, fabric and precious stones. It was called the “Tent of Meeting” because it was the place where Moses talked to God and received divine messages. The Israelites carried the Mishkan through the Sinai desert, setting it up at each campsite on their way to the Promised Land. What did Moses experience when he entered the Mishkan? The air was likely filled with fragrant smoke as priests burned incense to represent “the presence of the Eternal filling the tent” (Exodus 40:34). But how did Moses hear God’s actual words? Was it similar to hearing a human speak, or more like sensing an intuitive voice deep within one’s own soul? And what happened to the Mishkan after the Israelites reached the Promised Land and established permanent settlements there? Rabbinic sages say that the tent transformed into the “study hall” – the place where people gather to study the Torah. Any location where people read and discuss the Torah evokes the “Tent of Meeting” where Moses talked to God. At Temple Solel, any room in our building can become a modern-day Mishkan, a portal for talking to God through sacred study and joyful fellowship. Happily, our Torah Study class is gathering once again in the temple library after a three-year pandemic hiatus. Hybrid classes are now occurring in-person and also on Zoom every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. It’s a wonderful chance to reunite with old friends and meet remarkable newcomers. Please come and help us build our Torah Study “Mishkan” at Temple Solel. Torah Study meets in-person in the temple library and also on Zoom every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. See eNUZ for Zoom link. Please join us! Matthew Kozinets
