June July 2023

The mission of Temple Solel is to be a vibrant, inclusive and engaged Reform community, grounded in relationships and deeds, and elevated by Shabbat and Torah. JUNE & JULY 2023 / SIVAN TAMMUZ AV 5783 Going to School on our Youth Tobee Waxenberg, Director of Temple Solel’s Raker Religious School, has instituted the most beautiful way to end the school year: create a talent show, and give our youth the opportunity to shine. My goodness, the afterglow left by our youth on May 7th will illuminate every corner of Temple Solel until school resumes again in August. There is no question that Solel’s cup runneth over with the talent of our youth. Yet, what makes our talent show stand out for me, are the values our kids teach us. There are two in particular I’d like to lift up: respect-kavod, and freedomchofesh. Tobee began by grounding the talent show with the Jewish value of respectkavod. The ground rule was simple – everyone was to listen and watch each act in a supportive, loving way; laughing at the expense of any performer was out-of-bounds. How did the kids model freedomchofesh as the second value? Each “act” was performed by our students unselfconsciously. Whether a musical instrument, Tae Kwon Do, singing, dancing, baton-twirling – all reflected the loving homes and parents of our students, and Temple Solel’s nurturing culture. These kids, granted a little nervous before their performance, felt safe to get in front of people, and let their spirits soar. This was embodied, in particular, by our rising 5 th grader, Norah Weissman. For the second year in a row, Norah shared her exuberant, baton-twirling act. Norah’s music selection, Try Everything (from Zootopia), defined the essence of the talent show — be curious, explore, try new things, fail, try again, fall down, get back up. Norah danced and twirled to these lyrics (sung by Shakira, Google it!): I messed up tonight, I lost another fight Lost to myself, but I'll just start again I keep falling down, I keep on hitting the ground I always get up now, see what's next Look how far you've come, you filled your heart with love Baby, you've done enough, take a deep breath Don't beat yourself up, no need to run so fast Sometimes we come last, but we did our best I won't give up, no, I won't give in 'Til I reach the end, and then I'll start again No, I won't leave, I wanna try everything I wanna try even though I could fail I'll keep on making those new mistakes I'll keep on making them every day Those new mistakes Try everything… Each of our students was magnificent! They embodied chofesh – unselfconsciously trying everything! And the assembly of all the Raker Religious School – students, parents and teachers were simply spectacular. They modelled kavod and then some; whether clapping, encouraging, or holding their silence – all teeming with joy. As MC’s, our madrichim, Liv Goodman and Cole Nelson, made each student feel super special when called to the bimah. The closing song, led by our Cantorial Soloist, Todd Herzog, and accompanied by our Solel youth band, The Tribe, carried us out on the perfect note, Kehilah Kedoshah – indeed, this is what a sacred community looks like! -Rabbi John A. Linder [Norah Weissman, twirling to Try Everything]

JUNE & JULY 2023 / SIVAN TAMMUZ AV 5783 3 Summer-Ready Soul Dear Solel Family, We spend a lot of time and energy thinking about ways to get that summer beach body. We go to the gym, we try to eat healthy, we get botox and other things added to our bodies to make us look better on the outside. But what about what’s on the inside? How much time are we devoting to getting our insides right this summer season? And at the end of the day, isn’t that what’s really important? Here are a few ideas on what we can do in the coming weeks to really prepare ourselves for the hot months ahead: 1. Meditation Spending a few minutes each day in mindfulness and meditation can have a wealth of benefits, including reduced stress, improved memory, increased attention, enhanced willpower, and better sleep to mention just a few… this is something we can do inside in the air conditioning, for FREE, that will dramatically improve the quality of our lives. Why not give it a try? If you’re a beginner, there are a variety of apps to get you started, including Headspace, Calm, and Buddhify. These are accessible with your smartphone or tablet and can help support a new healthy habit. 2. Exercise This one has the dual benefit of supporting body and soul. Exercise can help with anxiety and depression, stress, ADHD, and even PTSD. It can also provide you with higher self-esteem, more energy, and stronger resilience to whatever life throws at you. If you can manage to find 30 minutes 5x/week, you will see amazing results. Even starting with 5-10 minute sessions and gradually working your way up will have positive effects on your outlook on life. 3. Prayer Talking with God is available all the time, not just at Shabbat services. Taking a few moments during the day to pour your heart out in prayer is a great way to find peace of mind, to receive wisdom from our Source, to access guidance in making important decisions, and encouragement in times of stress. The beauty of prayer is that you don’t even have to know what you’re doing. You just have to open your heart and be honest with yourself and with God. 4. Creativity By expressing yourself in some creative endeavor, whether it’s writing, painting, singing, or gardening, you allow yourself to hear that inner voice you’ve been avoiding. You process emotions that are inaccessible through rational thought. You fulfill your soul’s purpose, and you start to own all aspects of who you are as a person and a spiritual being. Again, there are no rules to doing this. You just have to honor who you are and where you are and go from there… 5. Lifelong Learning Judaism has a beautiful attitude towards learning, no matter how old we are. Studies have shown that continuous learning and growth contribute to maintaining cognitive abilities as we age, an increased sense of self-worth and confidence, and a greater sense of community and social support. Why not join us for Torah study on Saturday morning? Or take a class at a local community college or online at www.reformjudaism.org? You’ll make some new friends and stimulate your mind and spirit. Hopefully, these suggestions will get you on your way to a ‘summer-ready soul’ that will continue to grow throughout the year… In joy, Todd Herzog Cantorial Soloist

JUNE & JULY 2023 / SIVAN TAMMUZ AV 5783 7 “Transcendental Judaism” at Torah Study Are you interested in Jewish spirituality? Do you ever seek direct experiences of the Divine? These questions are explored in the terrific new book “Transcendental Judaism: Enlivening the Eternal Within to Uplift Ourselves and Our World” (Resource Publications, 2023). It is written by beloved Temple Solel member David L. Lieberman. As a Torah scholar and certified spiritual director, David sees Jewish history as unfolding in three stages: the era of Biblical Judaism (from Abraham to 70 CE); the era of Rabbinic Judaism (70 CE to present); and a new era beginning now, which David calls “Transcendental Judaism.” While the same 613 mitzvot (divine commandments) continuously govern Jewish life, certain mitzvot come to the fore with each passing era. In Biblical Judaism, animal offerings were key. In Rabbinic Judaism, acts of study, prayer and charity shine best. And now in Transcendental Judaism, the mitzvah of “devekut” – personal unification with God – will take center stage, thereby enhancing our ability to perform most other mitzvot. Certainly, Jews have practiced devekut since antiquity. In the Torah, Moses and the prophets commune intimately with God. Likewise in the Middle Ages, kabbalists developed meditation exercises to shift their consciousness from seeing the dualistic makeup of the earthly realm to sensing and experiencing the oneness of eternity. Today, many Jews desire the transcendental experience of going beyond daily earthbound chatter. David describes it as an open, peaceful, calm sensation. With the regular practice of meditation exercises, anyone can achieve a state of stillness, silence, and connection to God’s infinite peace. As David sees it, a new era of deepening spiritual connection has begun. I highly recommend his fascinating book, available now to order on Amazon. Summer Schedule: Beginning June 3, Torah Study returns to a Zoom-Only format every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. See eNUZ for Zoom link. Please join us! Matthew Kozinets Fellow Book Lovers, After a good 2022-23 season of hybrid meetings we now will shift to our summer on Zoom only. In-person potluck dinner meetings resume in October. On June 20 at 6:00 pm MST/PST we will meet on Zoom to discuss The Lost Shtetl by Max Gross. This debut novel won the National Jewish Book Award and the Jewish Fiction Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries. This book addresses: What if there was a town that history missed? For decades, the tiny Jewish shtetl of Kreskol existed in happy isolation, virtually untouched and unchanged. Spared by the Holocaust and the Cold War, its residents enjoyed remarkable peace. It missed out on cars, electricity, the internet, and indoor plumbing. But when a marriage dispute spins out of control, the whole town comes crashing into the present time. On July 18 we will read Fly Already, a short story collection by Etgar Keret. “An Israeli writer is making short stories fun again. Etgar Keret doesn’t avoid a punch line. The fiction writer and This American Life regular tackles Big Important Subjects in his work—death, family, war, etc.—but he does so in a way that’s not, well, a bummer . . . By embracing the comic and the absurd, Keret achieves something rare among modern short-story writers: He’s actually worth reading.” – Men's Journal On August 15 we will read a longer book, reading The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish. Many people have told me that I must read this book, and I hope we can all explore it together. There will be no meeting in September to give us time to prepare for the High Holidays. On October 17 our new season will begin with a title to be determined later. Keep those suggestions coming in Happy reading! Judy Schaffert [email protected] Temple Solel Book Club
