New! Annual Jewish Teen Trips for 8th -12th Grade in Raker Religious School One of the many outcomes that emerged from last year’s Youth Education & Family Engagement Initiative (YE&FEI) is our Temple Solel 8th-12th grade Jewish Teen Social Justice Weekend Trips. In this, our inaugural year, the 8th & 9th graders, led by Rabbi Linder, Andrea and Richard Eisen, teamed up with Tzedek America for their LA Social Justice Trip. Our 10th-12th, led by Rabbi Stiel and Jesse Edwards, teamed up with Etgar 36 for their Civil Rights Trip in Georgia and Alabama. Both trips proved to be transformative for all! Los Angeles Tzedek America Trip for 8th -9 th Grade Below is a photograph of our 8th & 9th graders with Fabian Debora at Homeboy Industries. Fabian shared his story of growing up with gangs, drugs, crime, in and out of prison. Jesuit priest, Father Greg Boyle, founded LA’s Homeboy Industries, creating job opportunities for those ex-cons like Fabian to reclaim his life. Art had always been a passion for Fabian, an escape from the hardships of his life. Through Fr. Greg’s mentorship, Fabian founded Homeboy Art Academy, giving youth in LA the outlet of art and creativity to build self-esteem and steer clear of drugs and crime. Our teens were deeply moved by the power of bearing witness to other peoples’ stories, like Homeboy’s Fabian. This was the thread through all the amazing organizations and people we met at Beit Teshuvah (rehab community for Jews), learning about the erased history Santa Monica’s African-American roots, and seeing the LA’s Skid Row neighborhood through the Chaplain Peter’s ministry. Each and every person we met and listened to reinforced the foundational Jewish value that each human being is created B’tzelem Elohim, in God’s image. Our bearing witness helped return a measure of dignity to all those we were blessed to encounter along the way. Of course, our trip was punctuated by loads of fun as well. One of the clear messages we heard from students and parents through last year’s YEFEI was the power of experiential learning. These first teen trips strongly affirmed this power. Thanks to those Solel members who helped to subsidize the cost of these trips to make them accessible to every student who wanted to go. Each year, 8th-12th, there will be a different trip. We’re off to a great start!! -Rabbi John Linder Alabama and Georgia Etgar 36 Civil Rights Trip for 10th -12th Grade Our teens have raved about this very special trip. It included visiting the new Brian Stevenson Legacy Museum and the Lynching Monument in Montgomery, marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, touring the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, spending Shabbat at a wonderful Reform Jewish Temple in Montgomery, seeing Martin Luther King, Jr’s childhood home and burial place, and attending worship services on MLK, Jr weekend at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where MLK Sr and Jr both had preached. All of these experiences were moving and impactful. However, the most impactful aspect of the trip was the people from whom we were blessed to learn. We heard from Lynda Blackman Lowery, the youngest person who marched from Selma to Montgomery. She told us, for example, that when she was 7, her mother died in childbirth because the local hospital for blacks was not allowed to get blood from the hospital for white people. She went on to become a very young activist, being jailed 9 times before turning 15. We were blessed to sing with and gather wisdom from Bishop Calvin Woods. He told us how it was faith that they were carrying out God’s mission that helped him, Martin Luther King, Jr, and the other leaders and participants of the Civil Rights movement to do their holy work. And we listened to Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock preach that we should not judge another till we sit in the place where another has sat. Our amazing students knew they were listening to truly extraordinary people, and they appreciated every minute! (By the way, if you are interested in going on an adults-only version of this trip next year, please tell Rabbi Stiel) -Rabbi Debbie Stiel

M a rc h 2 0 2 4 / A d a r I – A d a r I I 5 7 8 4 3 Rosh Chodesh March Meeting Make your own Miriam’s Cup, Socialize, and Enjoy a Potluck Dinner Wednesday, March 20th, 6:00pm -7:30pm Temple Solel Library Jewish art teacher Pam Levin will help us make our own Miriam’s cup! We will learn about the prophetess Miriam and the relatively new tradition of using a Miriam’s cup on Passover. The Miriam’s cup will be free, but you MUST register. We invite all of the Solel women, girls, and non-binary members to join us on March 20 at 6:00pm to embrace your inner artist, make some new Judaica, learn, share a blessing for the new month and enjoy a potluck dinner. Sign up registration link will be in eNUZ. “Because these things will change / I can feel it now / These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down / This revolution, the time will come for us to finally win / And we'll sing hallelujah” Taylor Swift (from her song, Change) Taylor Swift has become an inspirational force for independent women everywhere. In the song quote above, she might be describing the resilience of the Jewish people, especially at times when we are tested and forced to overcome external challenges. In today’s world, we are seeing a rise of antisemitism. We are experiencing limits and expectations placed on us that are not placed on other cultures and nations. This is one of the themes of Purim that we’ll be exploring this in this year’s spiel, “Esther’s Story – Taylor’s Version.” Just as Taylor says in her music, ‘we never go out of style.’ This could be applied to the ability of the Jews to bounce back from any hardship. This is a theme as relevant today as when she first sang it on her ‘1989’ album (which came out in 2014). The Jewish people have always overcome every obstacle that has been thrown at us. And having faith and believing in ourselves and one another is a classic theme that is always in fashion. Just like Esther (and Vashti), Taylor has been willing to stand up for herself and to speak her mind, even when the opinions she expressed were unpopular. She has been true to herself in her artistry and her image in a world dominated by male power and influence. We can see in her the same qualities that we find in our Purim heroines, and that we aspire to in our own lives and wish for future generations. This year’s family-friendly spiel will feature not only Taylor’s great music, but delicious food, snazzy costumes, and lots of laughter. Please join us on Saturday, March 23 @ 5:15pm for the Megillah reading in the sanctuary and then 6pm in the social hall for dinner, costume parade, and spiel. Please register for the dinner using the link in your eNUZ In spiel, Cantorial Soloist Todd V. Herzog What do Taylor Swift and Purim Have in Common?

4 M a rc h 2 0 2 4 / A d a r I – A d a r I I 5 7 8 4 Purim at the Preschool! The children can feel that spring is in the air. We are so excited to celebrate Purim this month at The Solel Preschool! This masquerade holiday is truly a favorite for our students. We love to dress up and retell the story of Esther, Mordechai, Achashverosh, Vashti, and Haman (Boo)! We sing our favorite Purim songs, shake our groggers and make hamentaschen with Ms Jackie and Ms Cherie! Giving gifts to friends as well as to the needy is a Purim tradition. Mishloach manot (gift baskets) might include treats, baked goods or any other fun items for a family. Some families cook and deliver a meal for a needy neighbor or collect canned goods to donate to a food pantry. Upcoming Dates to Remember: Kabbalat Shabbat – March 1 at 4:15PM Spring Camp – March 11-15 Wacky Purim Week - March 18-22

M a rc h 2 0 2 4 / A d a r I – A d a r I I 5 7 8 4 5 Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Securing Our Future | March 2024 “I did not find the world desolate when I entered it; those who came before planted for me before I was born; so do I plant for those who will come after me.” Talmud, Ta’amit 23a How do you put a price on things? How do we judge how much it is worth? What if we aren’t able to put a numeric value on something? That’s how I feel about the Temple. I feel genuinely blessed to be a member of Temple Solel. We are a community. We are fellow pathfinders. I donate to the Temple’s Foundation so that children, generations after me, find our community. So that they too, can be pathfinders. I know that the Temple is that unwavering tree of life for Jews in the area. The Foundation is the steady hand extended to the Temple in times of need. I know I can’t put a price on the Temple, but I know I can help. Donations to the Temple Foundation are always needed and in any denomination, stocks or otherwise. I encourage you to stop, just for a moment, and feel how much the Temple is worth to you. Please consider joining me in donating to the Foundation. For the Temple now, and the Temple to come. If you have questions, please contact Robert Siamon, President at [email protected] Avery Crossman, Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Director Solel Speaker Series Presented by the Men of Solel March 27, 2024 at 10:00AM This month’s speaker will be Dr. Brad Posch, a research scientist at the Desert Botanical Garden. He will be discussing the research being carried out at the Garden’s Dryland Plant Ecophysiology Lab and how the Garden is dealing with the problems caused by high temperature and drought. 6 M a rc h 2 0 2 4 / A d a r I – A d a r I I 5 7 8 4 Temple Solel Book Club Fellow Book Lovers, *Please read for some changes in our previously scheduled meetings* This month, on March 21 we will meet for our 6 p.m. dairy/pareve potluck to discuss Beach Music by Pat Conroy. It's a long book, so start reading at the beginning of the month. Jack McCall, living in Rome with his young daughter, struggles to find peace after his wife’s suicide. His sister-in-law arrives and begs him to return home, and two school friends ask him to help track down a third classmate who went deep underground as an antiwar protester. Jack's journey takes in the past and the present in Europe and the American South, and leads him to shocking and ultimately liberating truths. Read the book to discover its Jewish connection. On April 11 we'll discuss One Mile and Two Days Before Sunset by Shimon Adaf, the first book of the Lost Detective Trilogy. It's a murder-mystery that plays with all the old noir tropes, such as "the hard-bitten detective moving through the night time city, the goons that trash his office and then beat him senseless." The book has both the oldtime atmospherics of a noir novel and also erudite Jewish content. On May 16, our book will be Unstoppable, about a Holocaust survivor named Siggi Wilzig who arrived in NY penniless and went on to build a $4 billion oiland-banking empire. The author is Joshua M. Greene, with a foreword by Holocaust scholar Debra Lipstadt. https://www.goodreads.com/book/ show/54396808-unstoppable Upcoming dates: June 20, July 18, and August 15, only on Zoom. There will be no meeting in September due to the High Holidays. Happy Reading! Judy Schaffert March Zoom Events Jewish Meditation Tuesday March 12, 2024 March 26, 2024 10:00-10:30 am Lunch and Learn Wednesday March 6, 2024 March 20, 2024 12:00-1:00 pm See eNUZ for links to all events listed.

M a rc h 2 0 2 4 / A d a r I – A d a r I I 5 7 8 4 7 Volunteer Recognition Volunteers are an essential part of Temple Solel. We would like to thank the following volunteers for their time and efforts: Birthday Calls Erica Bonime Knitting for a Purpose Carol Brillman Jill Loebel Beverly Nathan Margie Rahilly Linda Ribnik Beth Sennett Lisa Trotta Nancy Weinstein Gail Zucker Yahrzeit Notices Cynthia Marcus Blood Drive Check-ins Erica Bonime Would you like to volunteer at some point in the future? We’d love to have you! Email [email protected], and we’ll add you to our volunteer email list for upcoming opportunities. Thank You! “The Gift” at Torah Study What is your “love language”? What words, gestures, or gifts do you use to communicate love? In the Torah, the love language between God and Israel is food. When the Israelites arrive at Mount Sinai and build a Tabernacle to worship the divine, they offer gifts of food to God to express their devotion. Offerings of cattle, sheep, and goats are roasted as a “pleasing aroma to the Lord,” and eaten by the community as sacred meals. The primary offering is called Minchah – literally, “The Gift.” It is considered God’s favorite offering because it is eaten with every meal. Surprisingly, Minchah is not the grandest animal, but the smallest bread. It is the pastoral bread that the ancestors of the Israelites ate before history began. In distant times, nomadic shepherds roamed the steppes of Eurasia. They grazed their sheep on wild grass, and collected wild grains to make bread. They ground the grains by hand, mixed them with water to make dough, and baked the dough on hot coals. The resulting shepherd’s bread was round and flat, and later called “matzah.” Remarkably, this simple bread is used throughout the Bible to commune with the divine realm. Abraham and Sarah, for example, bake it for three visiting angels. Also, God feeds it to the prophet Elijah. And in the Tabernacle, God calls it Minchah, the favorite gift. Amazingly, the food that God wants most is the sustenance of people who slept under stars and herded sheep under wind and sun. To God, their humble lives and humble bread speak the language of eternity. A special IN-PERSON Torah Study will be held in the temple library with a bagel reception on Saturday, March 2 at 9:00 a.m. On all other Saturdays in March, we will meet on ZOOM. See eNUZ for Zoom link. Please join us! Matthew Kozinets A message to the whole Knitting for a Purpose team! “We recognize the significant time, effort, and love invested in creating these quilts, and we want you to know that your kindness has not gone unnoticed! Hello Members of Temple Solel, I had the privilege of testifying at the Arizona State Senate building for a bill that, if passed, would make the act of intentionally calling a fake emergency into a house of worship or school into a class 6 felony. This bill is something that I personally feel strongly about. Many of you might recall the experience our community had this past holiday season regarding fake bomb threats being called during services. When this happened, we had to evacuate the sanctuary during a live-stream and call in the Paradise Valley Police Department to bring in a K9 unit & sweep the building. Many parents were frightened to send their little ones to the preschool the next week, and people were questioning if we would even have religious school that Sunday. Worst of all— it almost ruined an innocent young lady’s Bat Mitzvah! Fortunately, as the Jewish people have done for thousands of years, the community found hope and strength, and proudly came together. Thanks to the great leadership of our Executive Director Peter Pishko, the incredible care of the Paradise Valley Police Department, the quick action of our Clergy, the strong resolve of our staff, and the generous donations toward security from our congregation, Temple Solel overcame this obstacle and gathered ourselves to become stronger and more prepared than ever before. According to Jerod MacDonald-Evoy with AZ Mirror, “Sarah Kader with the Arizona chapter of the Anti-Defamation League told the committee that 12 synagogues were targeted between July and September last year, all eliciting a SWAT response. Kader went to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office looking to address the growing issue, and the result was Gress’ bill.” (The one I spoke in support of!) I feel honored to have the opportunity to do my part in fighting Jew-hate and hate in general. The bill passed in both the AZ House of Representatives as well as the Senate, so let’s hope that it passes again when introduced to the floor! Thank you all for including me in this wonderful and loving community. I hope you have a joyous month of Adar! - Mason Marks

(Alfie!) Onward Hebrew is a grassroots initiative, started in 2017, as to how Hebrew could be taught in a part-time/ temple setting. As of 2023, over 60 educational programs in religious schools base their Hebrew learning on Onward Hebrew, sound to print progression, introducing the "sounds" of Hebrew prior to introducing decoding. In Raker Religious School, for grades MT-3rd grade, we use the Onward Hebrew program to introduce the sounds of Hebrew. Once they get to 4th grade, decoding the Alef-Bet and learning the sounds of the vowels begin. Since we only have 45 minutes for Hebrew learning each Sunday we are in session, the fact that many of our students already hear Hebrew words in their homes, at Shabbat services, during t'filah, at camps and in Jewish day schools, allows our students to be somewhat comfortable when they reach 4th grade and actually learn to read Hebrew. Of course the goal of reading Hebrew is to be knowledgeable when preparing for a B' Mitzvah, visiting other congregations or being able to read from any siddur with confidence, connect to current Jewish life and culture, or recite prayers. The next time you have your family together, try listing all of the Hebrew words you know! I think you will be surprised! Start with Boker Tov! *Our Purim Festival and Shuk is March 24! We have combined the fun of the Purim games, costumes, bouncy houses, dunk tank and good food with a Shuk! A farmer's market! Please contact Jesse at [email protected] to volunteer both time, money and produce! Our Purim Festival will be held during religious school hours, 9:30-Noon. JOIN US! And don't forget your funny hat or costume!! Raker Teacher Spotlight—Alla Shnitman: Our wonderful Kindergarten teacher was raised in the Soviet Union. Her parents valued Judaism and all of its traditions. Alla made aliyah to Israel in 1990 with her family and lived there for 15 years. Her biggest joy is to teach the next generation about the Jewish holidays and traditions. One more thing...Camp scholarships are available both from us and the CJP. Please go to our website and fill out the scholarship form and return asap! Jewish camps are the best. For any questions, please get in touch with me. L'Shalom, Tobee
