January 2024

Changes at Temple Solel Change has come to the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation. Whether we like it or not, Change Is Inevitable. A difficult piece of making change is the hope that the change will be beneficial for everyone involved, but only time will tell. In Isaiah 43:18-19 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! …” Rather than making wide sweeping change, we have embellished on what has already been built within The Foundation and we believe this change is good for both Temple Solel and The Foundation. The Mission of the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation: “… invest and manage funds through endowments for the sole purpose of financially supporting the activities, programs, practices and growth of Temple Solel located in Paradise Valley, Arizona.” Since its revitalization in 2007, we have lived by this mission. Our board consists of 11 volunteer directors who are all members of Temple Solel. I can characterize each of them as wonderful thoughtful people whose top priority is to do what is right for Temple Solel and The Foundation. In keeping with our mission, In November we passed 3 new policy statements and a revised statement giving better structure to our processes and better direction when Temple Solel is in need of funds. • Spending policy- Requires the Foundation to give a minimum amount of gift back to Temple Solel each year without considering good and bad times, though our goal is to always give back as much as possible. Our average yearly gift to Solel is $44,300. And our most recent gift approved in September was $30,000 to help pay for the unbudgeted security costs to protect our beloved congregation. • Gift Acceptance Policyidentifies the types of gifts The Foundation will accept, and an advisory committee has been put in place to review these gifts. • Grant Policy- A committee has been put into place to review grants given to The Foundation and requests for funding by Temple Solel. • Investment Policy- This revised policy has been put in place guiding The Foundation as to acceptable investment percentages to protect your hardearned donations in both good and bad economic times. When we get stuck in the past, sometimes it is difficult to see how change can be beneficial. The answer is always, “This is the way we have always done it.” But the way we have always done it sometimes needs to change with time and over time. L’chaim to Temple Solel and our Congregation. Please consider a donation to the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation in honor of Temple Solel. Happy New Year, Robert Siamon, President Temple Solel Endowment Foundation [email protected] 602-628-8705 The Mission of Temple Solel is to be a vibrant, inclusive and engaged Reform community, grounded in relationships and deeds, and elevated by Shabbat and Torah.

You might be wondering, isn’t Rosh Hashanah the Jewish New Year? Well, as you know, Jews never do anything the simple way. We’ve got four different new years during the year. In addition to the 1st of Tishrei (Rosh Hashanah) and the 15th of Shevat (Tu B’Shevat), we’ve got the 1st of Nisan (which was the first month of the Hebrew calendar) and also the 1st of Elul, when we begin the process of preparing for the High Holy Days. The holiday of Tu B’Shevat is not mentioned in the Torah, but it is believed to have begun as a minor agricultural holiday celebrating Spring in Israel. Though you might not think of mid-January as ‘spring,’ this is when the sap begins to rise in the trees, and the renewal of buds begins. The holiday began as a festival in Israel, but after 70 CE when the Temple was destroyed and the Jews were exiled from their land, they began the custom of having a seder (festive meal) where they ate biblical foods native to the Holy Land. This ritual gave them a sense of connection to their homeland, and it can do the same for us today. Planting trees on Tu B’Shevat shows an awareness of our environment, and a connection to the Earth that we may have lost over the years. Mystics in Safed would use the seder to consume fruits with and without shells as a way of symbolically opening themselves up to God’s holiness. I love the idea of bringing spirituality into our lives in this way. May we use the holiday this year to connect to one another, to the Earth and to God. Wishing you all a very happy New Year(s), Cantorial Soloist Todd V. Herzog One Month, Two New Years!

4 J a n u a r y 2 0 2 4 / Te v e t - S h’ va t 5 7 8 4 NEW YEAR’S OPPORTUNITIES The New Year gives all of us an opportunity to reflect on our past behavior and to make resolutions to select behaviors we want to change. Making a resolution can be part of a family tradition. As a family, talk about what worked this past year and what didn’t. Limit the number of resolutions so they are more meaningful. Examples of family resolutions might include doing a volunteer activity, playing games once or twice a month or taking a walk after dinner a few evenings a week. Individual resolutions for preschoolers could include brushing teeth and washing hands or cleaning up toys. Children can also be encouraged to work on helping and listening skills. (i.e. - Help more when Mommy and Daddy ask me). Children feel good when their parents acknowledge their accomplishments. Go over the list of resolutions a few times during the year and acknowledge the successes and talk about what resolutions still need more attention. The praise will help them develop self -regulating behaviors and improve their selfesteem. Remember a resolution is a guide, so be flexible and understanding if your child is making an effort. The best part of family resolutions is that the family is doing it together and your child will be learning how to his/her role in the family and also the larger world. The Solel Preschool will be opening enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year mid-January. We offer low rations, warm and caring teachers, exceptional enrichment programming and a community for your whole family. Temple Solel members are allowed to register first and classes fill up quickly, so if you are interested get your registration in early. J a n u a r y 2 0 2 4 / Te v e t - S h’ va t 5 7 8 4 5 • What is your favorite Jewish holiday to celebrate? Why? • Think of 7 Hebrew words that are must for every Jewish persons' vocabulary IMPORTANT : To all of our Bar/Bat Mitzvah students who have completed their B'Nai Mitzvah service in the last 4-5 months.....Where have you gone? Surely you are not done with your Jewish education! There is so much more coming your way and we don't want you missing anything. Will you join the Madrichim program? Will you go on the fantastic 8/9 grade trip? How about completing Confirmation! And of course, our 11/12 grade class will prepare you to go out into the community as a knowledgeable young Jewish adult! Parents, don't let your student miss these opportunities. I hope to see everyone back in January! Todah Rabah for all that you do not only within the Jewish community but the Phoenix community as well. L'shalom, Tobee Waxenberg Raker Religious School Director Dear Raker Families, Here we are in 2024! It is so important in our busy schedules to set aside time to ask and answer questions from the family about the family. Have a conversation within the generations! And since the new year has started, what better way to start up conversations than to set a time each week to learn more about one another. Examples: • What were you doing exactly one week ago tonight? • If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? Why? • What is your most and least favorite food? • What is/was your most and least favorite subject at school? • Where was the last place you went on vacation? • Describe your most treasured possession. • Finish this sentence...This weekend I hope to... • If you could have dinner with one famous person, dead or alive, who would it be? •Tell a story from your early childhood. Derech Horim – A New Opportunity for Parents at Raker Derech Horim (Parent’s Journeys) is a new monthly opportunity for solel parents and guardians to get to know each other better and to study with the clergy and guest teachers. This year, we will be anchoring our discussions in the book Jewish Spiritual Parenting. The book is a gift from us, and it will be given out at the first few Derech Horim gatherings. We hope you will stop by the Bistro, grab your bagel and coffee, and then join us from 9:45-10:30am. Our January meeting will be on January 28. Signs in the lobby will point you to the right space! Newcomers welcome!

6 J a n u a r y 2 0 2 4 / Te v e t - S h’ va t 5 7 8 4 We Need to Know… Please inform the Temple Solel office when a family member or friend is in the hospital. Too often we find out about illnesses, crises and hospitalizations long after they occur. This is a missed opportunity for visits from the rabbi and calls from the Caring Community as well as other assistance offered by the temple. We need your help in order to offer ours. If you’d like to let us know about a member that is ill, has a surgery date coming up, or is experiencing any other healthrelated issue that the rabbis should know about, please call the temple office at 480.991.7414, ext. 126 or email Tara at [email protected]. Greetings, Book Lovers! Welcome to 2024. Yet, as it is said, we are still writing 5783 on all our checks. On January 16, 2024 we will have a 6:00 p.m. potluck and 6:20 discussion of Gospel: A Novel by Wilton Barnhardt. This is a rollicking good read, with parallel stories of excerpts from a much sought-after (and fictional) lost first-century gospel of the Bible by the apostle Matthias and a more modern-day story of the colorful academics, clerics, and scoundrels who are chasing after it. The narrative "races through three continents, nine countries, and dozens of colorful locales, as two characters―shy theological student Lucy Dantan and hard-drinking, disillusioned ex-Jesuit Patrick O'Hanrahan―pursue rumors and clues about the gospel's whereabouts and contents. In the end, what they discover will challenge and forever change the nature of faith." There's even a rabbi who is in on the chase. It's long but worth the read. Please join us! On February 20, we will discuss a memoir, Soles of A Survivor by Nhi Aronheim. Aronheim, originally from Vietnam, endured ordeals as a refugee from war before becoming American --and Jewish. Her book "is at once a personal and universal journal in which we learn how the author ultimately finds a home for her heart with her beloved, and a home for her soul within the Jewish community, a community she makes stronger and kinder. In its pages, the reader cannot help but feel that renewal is ever a possibility.” —Rabbi B. Elka Abrahamson On March 19, we will turn to another non-fiction immigrant story, From Africa to Zion: The Shepherd Boy Who Became Israel’s First Ethiopian-Born Journalist by Danny Abebe. The Jewish Book Council review notes, the "memoir offers a personal reflection on the challenges of [Abebe's] childhood journey from the village of Tilamado, through Sudan, and to the Jewish State. It also shares the complex, painful, and ultimately inspiring struggle the author has fought for integration and acceptance into Israeli society." Upcoming meetings: (in-person through May) April 16, May 21, August 20, September 17 Happy reading and Happy New Year, Judy Schaffert [email protected] Temple Solel Book Club Rosh Chodesh for January Tu B'Shevat Seder and Potluck Dinner January 10, 6:00pm -7:30pm Temple Solel Library Tu B’Shevat, the ancient New Year of the Trees, or Rosh Hashanah L'ilanot, was thought to be sacred to the women of Israel. It celebrated the New Year of God's female aspect, the Shechinah. In our Tu B'Shevat seder, as in the Passover seder, we will drink four cups of wine or juice, ask four questions, and sample special foods related to Israel and the festival. Through blessings, we will thank God for the wonder of renewed life, and reawaken our own spiritual connections. We invite all of the Solel women, girls, and non-binary members to join us on January 10 at 6:00pm for a meaningful Tu B’Shevat Seder and potluck dinner. Sign up registration link will be in eNUZ.

J a n u a r y 2 0 2 4 / Te v e t - S h’ va t 5 7 8 4 7 Volunteer Recognition Volunteers are an essential part of Temple Solel. We’d love to have you! Email [email protected], and we’ll add you to our volunteer email list for upcoming opportunities. Thank You! “She-roes” at Torah Study In Torah Study this month, we encounter a fun question: is Exodus a superhero story? Like all good superhero stories, Exodus begins with a chosen youth (Moses) who must awaken his potential superpower (prophetic ability) to battle an archenemy (Pharaoh). But actually, this is not how Exodus begins. The biblical drama of slavery and redemption in Exodus begins with six women who have no superpowers to speak of. They are regular people who possess the same strengths and weaknesses as everyone else. They include two midwives, Shifrah and Puah; two Hebrew slaves, Yocheved and Miriam; Pharaoh’s daughter, Batyah; and a Midianite shepherdess, Zipporah. Surely, Miriam becomes a prophet later in the Torah. But when Exodus begins, she and the other women overcome tremendous odds just by using their everyday wits and determination. They show us that we can be heroes and she-roes simply by acting within the confines of our daily lives, albeit acting with courage and love. For instance, Shifrah and Puah save Hebrew babies from Pharaoh’s wrath by performing their routine jobs as midwives. Also, Yocheved protects her infant son by weaving a basket, a craft she has done a thousand times before. And Zipporah rescues Moses by giving him food and shelter, a gesture of hospitality commonplace in the desert. These women prove that ordinary tasks carry the potential to make a big difference in the lives of others. Exodus is an epic story. But at its heart, it says that we don’t need to be superheroes to save the world. We just need to be ourselves. A special IN-PERSON Torah Study will be held in the temple library with a bagel reception on Saturday, January 6 at 9:00 a.m. On all other Saturdays in January, we will meet on ZOOM. See eNUZ for Zoom link. Please join us! Matthew Kozinets
